Unique destination! This was a pharmacy, convenience store and restaurant all connected! We briefly looked at the convenience store but spent most of the time at the restaurant. The staff was amazing!! Very friendly and helpful throughout our whole meal! They deserve a 5/5 but this review is based off the flavor and quality of the food... We ordered Durans combination plate and the carne adovada plate! They were both served with fresh tortillas covered in butter. The tortillas are slightly thicker than what I am used too. The Durans combo plate was a good buy because it gave us a sample of 3 different items that the restaurant serves. The enchilada was probably the best on the plate but the flavor was still average. The taco was half crunchy and half soft because it was soaked in the chili and was bland. The carne adovada plate is definitely a spicy option, but i felt that although the meat was smothered it was a little dry. We werent very satisfied with the meal in general but we were surprised because the waitress overheard us questioning what a sopaipilla was and brought us some to try! On the house! This was the highlight of our meal because it was freshly fried and delicious when you add the honey! The outside is crisp and the inside is slightly soft, similar to fry bread. I gotta warn people about the food here, FOUND THE NASTIEST THICK HAIR WRAPPED AROUND MY TAMALE I usually don't care if I find a hair in my food, but this was the nastiest, thickest, dirty hair I have ever seen. Eat local and you'll have a better travel experience. I visited Albuquerque and I knew the Mexican food is different from Tex-Mex. I loved everything on the menu here. I not only tried my entrée but from what my family ordered and I couldn't stop eating off their plates. I can't recommend what to order but just come in and order. This restaurant is a local favorite!! Always busy and with a small seating area inside and a narrow area on the adjoining patio, seating can require a wait. However, the "pharmacy" area is large and really is an eclectic gift shop. Books, cards, joke gifts, fun socks fill a big wall, there are upscale kitchen accessories, beautiful purses and bags, handmade scarves, shawls, sweaters-always different selections-, artisan jewelry (not Native American usually), candles, Christmas, hair do-dads, kids' section with unique puzzles, games, building sets..... you can easily spend any necessary "wait time" browsing in the shop!! The food is classic New Mexican with scrumptious enchiladas and incredible green chile. The flour tortillas are giant and with butter, especially, they truly melt in your mouth. This place is awesome! Not only does it offer incredible New Mexican food, but their pharmacy has a hefty selection of local and unique gifts. Burn of your huevos rancheros with some shopping! They have a traditional menu of NM specialties including enchiladas, tacos, and combo plates. For those that have smaller appetites they also offer bean and chile by the bowl and a la carte items. One thing you HAVE to order is one of their fresh massive tortillas. I sat at the bar and watched one of the cooks roll out the tortilla and throw it on the stove. So fresh! We were very happy and satisfied with our order. I got the Huevos Rancheros Christmas style and my mom ordered the Turkey Jack which was one of their tortillas layered with turkey, jack cheese, green chile, lettuce and tomato, served with a side of guac. First, I want to say I am leaving this review based off of our interaction with the waitress with the short brown hair and round glasses who seated us on 08/13/23. My husband and I put ourselves on the wait list for 2. We were given a buzzer and told it was a 15-30 minute wait. As usual, he and I enjoyed walking around the beautiful shop and picked out a few items to purchase after our meal. After about 30 minutes, my husband walked up to the counter to check our seating status. He informed her that our buzzer had not gone off. He observed that there were several open clean tables with no one waiting to be seated. She asked for the buzzer and snagged it from his hand. My eyebrows went up. He then looked passed her and said, I see a two top back there, she snapped and said "I am aware that there are open tables." She grabbed 2 menus and whipped around to walk us over. I then said, "You're being a bit short don't you think?" She then whipped around and got face to face with me and said sharply "I said I was aware we have open tables." I then said "wow, wow, wow." She tossed the menus on the table angrily and said, your waiter will be right with you. I said "As long as it's not you." NOW.... The waitress we got was AWESOME! She was kind, and treated us very warmly. After our horrible encounter, our actual waitress' sweet demeanor was what made us stay. The meal was delicious. Also, I will reiterate this is based off of one encounter. My husband, my family and I LOVE Durans. We have had many memorable meal and have made lots of beautiful purchases over many many years. On that note we will go back, I just WILL NOT tolerate the behavior of that person. Perhaps she was having a bad day. However, her attitude should not scully such a special place and did not merit taking it out on my husband and I. The other employees were very professional but the kid who works there felt the need to passive aggressively tell the other employees loudly that "they're not getting a table." I had a vaccine booster appointment and was refused service due to not having an insurance card. Last year I got a first vaccine from, so they're making up arbitrary rules on giving service. This is a state and federal program, people, and they refuse to give service when they feel like it. Had to report them to the NM Dept. of Health and the Governor's office. So we were in the mood for New Mexican food. Translation: I was in the mood for good chips and salsa. I did a search on Yelp an this restaurant came up with 4 stars. It was close by, unique, locally owned and had a ''one $'' price rating, so the price was right! No lie...it is located inside a pharmacy. So much so that we had to ask the cashier where it was since it was hidden a bit in the back of the store. As much as I wanted to LOVE the place, it was just okay, in my opinion. I didn't like the chips because they tasted kind of stale and the the salsa was too hot. Also, you had to pay for them! It started on disappointing note. I ordered the cheese enchiladas. I didn't order meat with it because I was a bit unhappy that they were $9.95 already. It seemed high for a restaurant at the ''one $'' level, so paying an extra $3 wasn't going to happen! I have to say, though, the cheese enchiladas were surprisingly tasty! I can't explain why I liked them so much because they were pretty basic. And my taste buds weren't 100% because of the hot salsa, so I couldn't even taste the Red Chile that well...but they were still good. Another thing I wasn't wild about was that you could only get beans as a side. I don't like beans that much so I usually just go for the rice. But there was no rice. That was unexpected. My dinner companion had the frito pie and said it was okay. I will say that I noticed several people coming in to pick up take-out orders and that doesn't really happen unless the food is good enough to be worth the trouble of driving to pick it up. Makes me want to give the place another try. Also, our waitress was very nice. So let me tell you something I discovered as I was leaving. The drug store is filled with the cutest gifts! I can't wait to go back for birthday and holiday shopping! We even bought some yummy truffles on way out. The one pictured is Black Forest. $3 but worth it! I'm torn between a 3 or 4-star rating. I think the whole experience warrants a 4 if you like to shop, but this is a restaurant review, so I'll have to stick with 3. Awesome New Mexican food spot!! Their red chile is BOMB. It reminded me of my grandmother's, and they manage to keep the flavor without the heat. My sister ordered the bowl of chile with red chile and chicken, there are beans in it as well and a lot of cheese to top it off. It comes with a warm buttered hand rolled flour tortilla that is the best I have had at a restaurant. To be honest, great comfort food! I had the special- breakfast enchiladas with both red and green chile. The egg was cooked perfectly over easy. The food is good but their hostess is extremely rude and will NOT sit you if your complete party is not there when you arrive. She'll push you and your party that's there to the side and punish you for not having your complete party to sit at that moment. There are so many great New Mexican food restaurant in our city that actually treat you well when you arrive at their restaurant despite the fact you may not have your complete party there yet. The other restaurant will sit you offer chips and salsa and wait for you to order when your ready and not tell you " you also,have to order right away" plus be extremely rude about it. read more

I've been in Abq for a year and a half now and this is the number one place that people keep telling me to try. I finally made it in this weekend and it did not disappoint! It's located within an actual pharmacy/gift shop which has tons of cool items in and of itself. The space is limited so keep this in mind when planning ahead. If you're heading in solo or with a friend/partner, then it's pretty easy to get in at the counter area, which makes for an even more fun and unique dining experience. At this space, you get to watch them prepare tortillas which are made to order, grilled up to perfection, and then slathered in some beautiful butter sauce. They run like a well oiled ship and their staff are really the secret to their success, imo. During out entire meal we shared a lot of laughs with Cruscita (sorry for spelling), and many of the other staff. Their food is DELICIOUS and plentiful, so make sure you come with a good appetite. I ordered the breakfast burrito (after my bf promised he would help me eat it because seeing them being prepped I realized it was wayyy too much for one person) and he had the chicken enchiladas with an egg on top. He polished his plate and mine was also delicious. Durans is such a fun and eclectic place to stop. I recommend all who are looking for fun gifts to let this be a place to shop at! My brother and I stopped by for lunch today. He got the huevos rancheros and I, the blue corn chicken tacos. Both dishes were good and tasted like grandma was cooking in the kitchen. The highlight of our lunch was the delicious 24in tortilla with butter! Took us back to our childhood at grandmas taking the tortillas right off the comal, smothering them with butter, and munching on them until our heart was content! Wanted to try something new while I was in the old town area and have heard good things about Duran's, so I said why not. I wish I would have gone to my regular, dependable Mexican joint just a few blocks down. The service was super slow. It took about 40 mins for us to get our food- Granted it took a while before anyone even came to the table to take our order. Yet, we wanted to stick it out. My brother and husband got the red chile chicken enchiladas and thought they were decent. I got the beef tacos and was very disappointed. They were flavorless. I had to order a side of chile just to add something on them for flavor. I will say, their red chile is unique. After hearing so much about the food at Duran's Pharmacy, my sister and I dropped by yesterday. Understanding that we'd have to pickup our order, we requested a menu and were informed we'd have to order online, which we did. I received a brief notification on my phone from "BringMeThat" which flashed my order number, charged a $4.50 service fee and stated a confirmation notice would be sent to me e-mail. As we waited for said notification, we noted a verbal altercation in the parking lot between an elderly gentleman and a pharmacy employee. Basically, the employee berated the gentleman for not wearing a facemask. He finally told her to just bring his prescription out to him. She did so and told him never to visit the pharmacy again, which he retorted that he had no intention of ever doing so. It appeared this altercation could have been avoided if the employee had just offered to deliver his order instead of cussing him out. Since I never received the food notification, we contacted the restaurant directly. A young lady responded so unprofessionally, we thought we had reached a personal residence. She put us on hold while she delivered a curbside meal. We left without ordering and with a decision to never visit this establishment again. read more
