A solid mom & pop from way back. All manner of custom, from junkies to politicians to lawyers to tourists to old regular folks who've been coming forever. It's funky - different seating areas with different climate zones, loud, goofy ads on the tabletops, parking across the way these days (it seems unsafe, but I've never had issues and I've been visiting since the Eighties). Service is always great, in my recollection. Food is . . . good but not great - but I want to stress that's an extremely subjective opinion. You know, it's the type of food that is going to have severe partisanship - the eats at Barelas Coffee House have always done me just fine, but I don't recall ever thinking, "Man, why don't we come here more often?!" Great place to meet friends and solidly a part of the community - if you want to see a real side of Albuquerque, this is certainly one of them. Funky old restaurant that is extremely busy! We arrived about 9am on Saturday and luckily found a table. We started with their famous cinnamon roll and then shared the deluxe huevos rancheros with chopped green chilie and a side of shredded beef. Everything came out fast and was very delicious. Went with the combination plate and chicharrones. Let's start with the combination plate, the red chili on the enchilada was delicious, the bean and beef burrito very bland as well as the taco. This was another spot recommended by my cousin to go visit. Much like frontier, it appears that the spot bought the place is right next to them and continued to grow. They have a gift shop, a bakery, and a restaurant all combined. Across the street they have a parking lot and an ice cream shop. They have appeared to be the place for the community, and their food felt like home. It was almost lunchtime and very busy in the dining room. I chose to have the beef enchiladas, which of course came with their New Mexico green chile. The rice and beans are good and their yellow corn tortillas kept everything together. My girlfriend had their Carne Adovada plate and really enjoyed the red sauce that came with it. She said it reminded her of her mother's. The thick flour tortillas that were homemade were so good with butter, and for me, reminded me of my grandmother's tortillas growing up. We decided to try their Menudo, and it seemed like the tripe was added to the broth and Hominy. After combining everything, we came to the conclusion that the Menudo was good, tripe was very tender, but as a whole lacked the seasoning kick that we used to here in LA. Overall, it was a very nice experience and their decor for Coca-Cola was pretty cool. The service was great! I loved how they had a little candies for purchase when you showed up with the check to pay. I recommend this spot for anyone visiting Albuquerque. read more

The service was excellent, 10/10 The restaurant has a diner and family feel with beautiful outdoor seating. You can just tell the locals love it here. The food came out so quick, which usually makes me nervous. The meat was tasty and tender. The hash browns were good. However my eggs tasted like it was not made to order, like it was just seating there for awhile. I love eggs and a restaurant who can't get eggs right is worrisome. Honestly - we didn't have a great experience here. We had a long wait to order, a long wait to get our food, and a long wait to receive our check in order to wait in line and pay at the counter. By the time we got our food, the tortillas were cold, the Chile was cold, and everything was...bland. Oh...and the coffee...The coffee did not taste good. The table water also did not taste good. Now, maybe this is because I'm not from here, but the tap water tasted like it was pulled straight from a well...and whatever tap water they served us they used to make the coffee and the coffee had that same exact metallic taste. It was bad: Metallica, pungent, and bitter. I get there is a difference between Mexican, New Mexican, and Tex Mex. I order the Huevos Rancheros and I'm assuming this is New Mexico's version of Huevos Rancheros....they were okay. Maybe it would have been better if everything wasn't cold. Overall, Barelas did not live up to the hype. I've chatted with people born and raised in ABQ and my opinion has caused some controversy. One hand, people love this place and say what I have said is sacrilegious. Then on the other hand - there have been ABQ Natives who agree with me. What I notice is: If you like El Modelo you might not like Barelas and vice versa. That is the only correlation I have found out myself. Personally, I LOVE El Modelo. read more

Even though we've lived here for almost 40 years, today is the first time we've eaten at Barelas Coffee House. It's a local institution renowned for feeding everyone from neighborhood residents to presidents. It was super busy with regulars and some tourists, but we found a table pretty quickly. Our server was super friendly and took good care of us. My chile tolerance fluctuates, so I tried the two-egg breakfast with sausage and red and green on the side. It came with hash browns and some fantastic thick tortillas. The red was deeply colored and flavored with the right amount of heat - really good. The green was hotter, so I didn't eat much, but the couple of bites I had were tasty. My only quibble is that my food was a little cold when it arrived, but I was hungry so it wasn't worth taking the time to send it back. My husband enjoyed his huevos rancheros with red, plus one of the tortillas to mop everything up. I can see why Barelas Coffee House is so popular - friendly service and good food. read more

During our wait time at our table, Three different wait staff passed and not one asked if we've been helped. Wow, this was my first time ordering huevos rancheros (deluxe), and I'm very impressed! I was shocked because it's also very affordable here. The dish was overall great, and every part of the dish complimented each other well; it came with beans, two eggs, cheese, hash browns, and green chile. I'm not even a big fan of beans, but I liked it here on this dish! I would 100% come back here, and it was the highlight of food spots in ABQ when I visited. We went on a Saturday morning, and it was packed here where the line went to their gift shop. Instead of making reservations or putting your name down, you wait in line to get seated. Affordable and generally tasty food in a casual come-as-you-are-setting. All sorts of folks having grub. The place was slammed the Saturday morning we came. There were several groups ahead of us but the line moved very fast as the restaurant is large with many tables. We waited in line no more than 10 minutes before we were seated. However we were not attended to for a long time as there was outright confusion over who was serving our table. A waitress finally took initiative after another table's order was incorrectly delivered to us. They probably should hire another server or two on the weekends. Once our orders went in the kitchen was very fast - which they have to be given the high volume of patrons. As mentioned earlier, no qualms with the food. We had burrito plate, posole, tamale, and our teenager had a hamburger. The burrito plate was the best. Tamale was a wee bit dry. At the end of the meal you pay at the counter in the front. There are several lots around the building and across the street. As others have suggested, it may be better to avoid peak hours and the weekend rush.
