The service here is good, the staff is always friendly. The ambiance is like any other typically New Mexican restaurant, with some nice outdoor seating when it's not too hot. The posole never fails, I like the meat to posole ratio. You can never go wrong with the taco salad either (as pictured). However one star was taken off for the taco pizza... not good. It was a plain tostada with chicken and cheese... However, everything else is good. Just don't recommend that.. read more

Clean, open space, nice staff but it's just a little too new age for me. Stark, modern design. Loud because of hard surfaces everywhere. Staff constantly nice and helpful. Food is decent but definitely not my favorite NM food. And I don't like it that they don't include chips and salsa with take out orders. I took back a dinner for a friend who used to live in Abq. Had to pay for separate chips and salsa despite it being in the same section of the menu as my dinner. A little pricey compared to the Mama run family restaurants in town. Not expensive exactly but on the upper end of prices. I'll probably start going to my favorite family run restaurant next time I go thru. I need some food with roots!!! read more

Service was excellent! Staff greeted us immediately and made us feel welcomed. The table we sat at had a slight wobble and they quickly fixed it. We ordered a chimichanga and a green chili burger with onion ring and a chile relleno. I liked the flavor of the refried beans and my adobado chimichanga was tasty. We didn't get to sit here for a full meal but got a sopapilla to eat here + take out spinach-chile tamales, beans, calabacitas, and red and green chiles that we put in our thermoses to eat on the road. The sopapilla was not crispy at all and not very hot even though we ate it right there but had a good flavor. The other food items were better. I often prefer green chile but the red chile here was really good too-- more creamy and less bitter than some red can be. The beans were good. Overall a good meal. I appreciated that they were happy to pack things for us separately in away that was convenient for me to pack our thermoses. I only got a photo of the meal in the thermos. A 2 tamale and 2 side plate + one additional tamale and chile sauces filled up 2 thermoses perfectly and was enough food for me and my husband for lunch (we did have a big New Mexican breakfast with several sopapillas elsewhere before!) read more

We decided to try Monroe's on 2nd St for carryout, since we used to eat at a Monroe's on Academy years ago. We were very disappointed. The sopapillas, refried beans, stuffed sopapilla and sweet potato fries were "OK". The cheese enchiladas had an unpleasant rubbery cheese topping. The side of lettuce & tomato was small and had wilted by the time we got home. The chili rellenos were overdone and cooked in old oil, so we discarded them. The bill was $65. I added a tip because the order-taker was very pleasant and helpful. Total= $82.55 We supplemented with avocado, lettuce and tomato when we got home. Overall, this was a negative experience that took too much fix-up time at home. We will not be repeat customers. read more

Meal number two under the watchful eye of guide, Paul Sanchez. He's the leader of what we affectionately call the Albuquerque Eight. It's not a gang or anything like that. In fact, it's the opposite; a group of legal security professionals for larger businesses. Having accomplished a lot in half a day, the nine of us embarked on Monroe's, the King of New Mexican cuisine. NM cuisine was explained to me, but I didn't catch on too well. More peppers, spicier and more flavourful than regular Mexican fare. What a tough time to be the only gringo in the group. 90+ degrees and they want to eat outside! I'll start with that. They have a Gringo menu full of typical standard American dishes. Everyone in the group told my sorry bum to order from. Not a chance. I started with a delicious bowl of Miguel's famous Green Chili Stew which I split with another attorney but wanted it all. Incredibly tasty. Hot! They make wonderful chips and fresh salsa. Apparently, while there are a couple of spice levels for the salsa, if you're connected (like the eight), you can get hotter salsa. How nice. Everyone shared so I tasted so many things. All of them were terrific. I'd advise you to try the NY Strip with Relleno Platter, the Beef & Bean Chimis or any of the Stuffed Sopaipillas. In here, those aren't for dessert or complimentary side bread. Monroe's people are fast and friendly and the prices seemed acceptable (to the best of my knowledge, since I don't pay for any meals down here). After being away from NM for many years I am back and having one New Mexican meal a day. Today I came here and had my usual stuffed sopapilla with ground beef Christmas style. The chile was mid. As soon as we pull in the parking lot full. That's always a good sign. We go check in to get a table with a party of five and we're told it's about hour wait. I wanted to experience true New Mexican cuisine while in Albuquerque. A local recommended Monroe's. So on a rainy evening i went and tried two local dishes that are popular and very traditional to New Mexico. I started with Posole, a kind of stew/soup made with pork, hominy, and red chilis. WOW! It was chunky, slightly spicy and hearty. A cup was only $5. The chilis give the stew a real earthy flavor. This was very good. My main entree was the Carne Adovada platter. See the picture. It was huge, fresh, aromatic and colorful. Again, it was chunks of tender pork in a red chili sauce. It came with rice and pinto beans, cheese, and lettuce and tomato. It was filling. It was delicious! It reminded me of a cross between Mexican food and Cuban cuisine. That's my impression. I really liked the New Mexican cuisine, much better than Mexican food. Monroe's is in a new modern building. The space is large and very casual. It was an 8/10 on cleanliness. Lots of staff constantly checking in. It has a cafeteria feel in a way. I ordered the stew as a starter but both dishes arrived together in about 5 minutes. I think they could slow things down a bit to keep a nice "non rushed" atmosphere. This is probably my 10th review for Monroe's! Like previous reviews, nothing has changed and I am obsessed with this restaurant. First, I love the architecture! The huge glass windows are beautiful! It makes for a great view of the Sandias and the landscape surrounding the building. It also displayed the Christmas tree wonderfully in December. Secondly, I admire the staff. The management must be superb, because I have seen loyal employees there for years. I love how they work together to accommodate everyone's needs. Lastly, the food is great! A young lady took our drink order, and let us know that others might be delivering drinks and food. Everyone works for us! The drinks came quickly and we ordered food. We came here on our one night in Albuquerque based on a recommendation from the hotel clerk. The decor was surprisingly modern and rather well-spaced. The staff have an interesting set up where they aren't assigned to separate sections - they all cover all of the tables. This led to a little confusion and crossed lines of communication from what we could see - but that's their system and hopefully they can make it work on a super busy night. Our orders were a little off from what we asked for. The food was pretty good and not a bad introduction to NM cuisine. Monroe's was on my list of places to try when I got to New Mexico and this was my second stop here. Can't be here during breakfast and they also serve chips and salsa which is pretty good! Shared a beef chimichanga which was super tasty! It's pretty much a deep-fried burrito. Overall I learned my lesson on sharing food since portion size is large. It was quite big and it also comes with rice and beans drizzled in cheese. You can also pick what sauce you want on top of the burrito. This time I tried a red sauce which is light and perfect for eating it for breakfast. Monroe's service was quick and fast plus we for a ton of refills on our coffee cups which we needed for the long drive ahead. This place is a great stop if you want something fast and they still do have a large menu to order from. read more

My review has more to do with Monroe's Chile Shipping business rather than the restaurant itself, which would get an average rating. the food is nothing to write home about but not bad. I began ordering Jarred red chile from this company 2 years ago. the chile is good and the price was reasonable. I also recommended them to people searching for good New Mexico Chile, which I now regret doing. I only do business with reputable companies that stand by their products. Monroe's does not. After two years of regular business with this company, my last order was a disaster. I called them to fix the issue and they refused. They said it was the fault of the shipping company and not their problem. I disagree as the outer shipping box had no damage, it was the interior box that had broken jars and mold everywhere. I believe an employee shipped a bad box to me and The shipping supervisor at Monroe's blames UPS. I do business with UPS and have found them to be reliable. they will stand by their mistakes Monroe's does not. read more

Believe it or not, I have opinions about New Mexican food. I have my list of spots tried and true, who has the best sopapillas, whose chile is a must grab and whose is a "please stop". Monroe's sits in the middle for me. They have some very decent options like the red Chile cheeseburger is so messy and yum. I also really enjoy their new Downtown location that is very spacious. I somehow always manage to have trouble parking in their parking lot but it's much larger than the old Lomas location. read more

As I've said in previous reviews, there's certain types of food that we've all grown up with that are just not available anywhere else outside of the geographic region you originally had them in! Our server brought us the standard fresh made chips and house salsa, I had her bring some extra spicy salsa...I have a high spice level...LOL. I ordered what I was looking for on the menu: Stuffed Sopapilla Platter Beef or Bean | Beef and Bean  | Chicken | Carne Adovada  | Carne Asada | Fajita (Beef or Chicken) I got the Carne Asada ($12.95) Topped with New Mexico Hatch Green Chile, delicious Beans and Rice on the side and more Sopapillas as another side dish (of course, with honey)! I've been going to the Osuna location for years. Everything about the place is great. I went to the newer location on 4th and do not like it. The food is the same quality great, but it's a cafeteria environment. Steril, noisey, non descript and void of ambiance. Felt like you eat and go. While eating my lunch, the server approached and asked if I had gotten my check. I said no, I'm still eating My friend who was eating as well, though it rude. What if I wanted dessert? First if you are going to wear a mask when serving please wear it properly. Our waitress had her mask under her lower lip. Not sure why she even had it on. 2. The food was just okay.
