Our Mercedes SUV malfunctioned and died after 5:30 pm on Dec 29th, right before a long holiday weekend. Amazingly, we were able to coast into the Autoworks parking lot, where Dennis and his team immediately brought the car in to run computer diagnostic tests, and stayed after hours, right before a holiday weekend, to make sure we could operate the vehicle safely. They also offered to open up early after the holiday to check out our car before we got back on the highway for a 14 hour drive. Durango Autoworks has been my garage for over 40 years. Jimmy is the only one who's been there all this time and the only one who's ever touched any of my cars and trucks. Others have come and gone. I have an '02 Tacoma I bought when it was a year old. Now pushing 219,000 miles...and with regular maintenance and check ups still runs like a new truck. I only had one problem waaay back...the day the new "Sun Machine" was installed. My old '66 Ford needed a tune up and the machine was used on it...yikes. I took the truck back the next day and Jim fixed it right....hey when you get a new toy that's supposed to do the job, you use it. I had no problems after that...except it was an old Chicago transplant that had more rust than body. Whaddaya want for $600.00. read more

I have had all my automotive repairs and maintenance at Durango Auto Works for 11 years, since I moved to Durango. And I have four vehicles. They have always been honest, reliable,and friendly. When I have to leave a car there for a bit, they take me home about two miles away. They have done small things for me at no charge, as I am rather elderly. Their rates are not cheap, but neither are those of any repair facility, and much below dealer's prices. If one has a problem, they go after the smallest, least expensive solution first, and to my experience that is usually the fix. If you are a "regular" there, even infrequently, they know you by name. Nobody is perfect, but this place is close! read more

Had a knocking noise from the front end of the vehicle. We're told by several repair shops in the area that they couldn't get us in for at least two weeks. Autoworks got the car in on Monday morning, and it was fixed by Monday night. Great service great staff! read more

Not even sure where to start. My son stopped in on his way home to have his window fixed, to have his tires balanced, and a front end alignment. They noticed that he needed an upper ball Joint. The other one was bad, but they said he should be ok to drive it the rest of the way home, as he didn't have enough money to get it replaced. If he had called, I would have had the work done. After the work was done, he texted me a copy of the bill. The bill was fair. The problem I had was that my son was told the front end was "tweaked" so they couldn't align it to spec. On the way home, 2400 miles away, his left front tire blew out. He had it towed to a 24 hr roadside garage and had the tire replaced. After another 1000 miles or so, the tire blew out again. When he finally got home, I put his car on my lift and looked it over. The right side ball joint was so bad it was falling out. The left side, that they had replaced, was not bolted in. I have included a picture for those who would like to see. Also the rear brakes were gone!! It was so bad, that the calipers were locked up. When I called and spoke to the owner, he was very confrontational. All he kept saying was that my son didn't have enough money to have it fixed. He also said I could bring it back to him. I don't yet know the laws in Colorado, but in the state of New Hampshire, it is against the law to knowingly let a vehicle leave a shop that is unsafe. I will be taking this one step further and informing Colorado's DOT on this incident. If the control arm on my sons car had fallen off, the tire could have folded outward, causing the car to be uncontrollable. Possibly even flipping over, at high way speeds. I have sent an email with a picture of the control arm that was not bolted in. I have received no response. I have been an automotive tech for many years. I have run across many customers that didn't have enough money for a repair, but I always work to make the car safe before they drive off. Sometimes you just need to do the right thing and worry about the cost later. read more

pretty disappointed & won't be coming hack. I've been coming here for quite some time and everyone had always been really kind and helpful. Most days I schedule and do a drop off in the morning and they call and say when it's ready. Today, the man at the front desk was completely rude upon drop off. He acted as if I didn't have an appointment, though I had made it weeks in advance. Also at drop off I mentioned a couple hours was fine but I did need it before dark. He told me one hour. After four hours I called, he was again dismissive on the phone. Telling me another hour/hour and a half. I took my time and got here on the tail end of the time quoted. When I came in, he barely looked up. Was dismissive, rude in me appearing & asking questions on the vehicle. When I sat down, he immediately left and closed the doors. I'm giving it three stars because prior, they had been kind and helpful and maybe it's a bad apple and I believe in fairness. But after this experience, guess I gotta find a new mechanic read more

I wish I could leave two reviews because on two separate occasions I have taken my car into Durango Autoworks and drove away happy. The first time I took in my car my brakes were making a horrible noise. They looked it over and let me know that a small clip had broken, my brakes were fine. The second time I took in my car I thought that I would have to replace the clutch, it wouldn't shift at all and the pedal was mushy. I was actually stranded in the middle of the highway for a while before I figured out I could turn off my car and shift then turn it back on a drive to the next stop light before I had to do it all again. I limped to Durango Auto Works. They looked at my car right away and refilled my hydraulic fluid. Both times they could have done unnecessary work, over charged me, or taken advantage of general car ignorance. Both times they were kind, helped me right away, and explained things to me in a non condescending but simple way . If you live in Durango and you don't know a reliable mechanic I would recommend them any day. read more

We drove into Durango the Friday of Labor Day weekend. About 5 miles out our truck started running rough. I called Durango Autoworks and was told to drive in and they would check it out for us. The mechanic immediately came out with his auto check device and discovered we had a bad spark plug. He ordered the part, and I didn't mention his lunch had just been catered in so he was able to eat while waiting for the part. The part arrived within 10 minutes and he replaced it for us. Less than $40 and we were on our way. He even test drove the truck first to be sure. Can't say enough about this place! read more

This is the WORST place EVER!!! I would NEVER send anyone I like here!!! They TOTALLY screwed me!! ( my college daughter)! She is in Durango at school, and was told her transmission blew. We had a choice to replace or build a new one. Since I'm in AZ. I felt I was at their mercy. Since having it rebuilt, it had been leaking and back in the shop more than she had the car. They kept saying easy fix, ???? Then how was it NOT EVER fixed?? This started last August. When we brought her car home this summer, we had to pick it up from the shop, again. I got under the car to check, sure as shit, a puddle, which the owner told me, could have come from any car, in that same, exact spot?? Boy, I must be a dumb ass huh??? Yes, I'm the mom. The owner is an ass....finally told me I could take it to another place if it was still leaking when we got it home, per warranty. This is after I tried to reverse all charges also. Got it back home, the next morning, guess?? YES!! Huge puddle!!!!! Took it to another place,said it was a Seal , they fixed. A few weeks later, won't go into gear, another $700.00 to fix it..really??? Finally took it in for a trade, didn't even get my money from the transmission back. There was almost a whole year of horrible treatment from this place, which I'm not going to write about, just a wee it of the horrible experience we received! I once had these guys replace a broken window switch for my Subaru Outback. The communication with these guys is horrible (especially Ian), they never contacted me or updated me about the work that needed to be done when replacing my window switch, and ended up overcharged my card without my consent and replacing multiple things without ever contacting me... the worst part is the my window switch was replaced with what looks to be like a already used part, even though I was charged out the *** for what should of been a brand new part. I also contacted these guys several times to order some parts and get some work done for other things (grill and skid plate)... Ian failed to call me back or follow through all three times on the parts I requested, so I just went to the Subaru dealership finally. Dennis the owner is an AWESOME guy and he will take care of you... but the other guy IAN is terrible... poor communication and a rip off. read more
