1. They're extremely slow. The two oil changes I've done here took well over an hour. At least there is a bathroom and couch in the sitting area? 2. And this was the killer for me - They refused to honor my groupon after it expired. ON the groupon it says that the amount is still valid as if it were cash at the vendor's establishment. My daughter was stranded by the side of the road one evening after she unavoidably ran over a large retread on I-40. We called Speights who came out quickly and towed her in. The next day the mechanics found a bit of damage and fixed it. They also saw that my daughter's brakes were in bad shape (which they definitely were) and suggested she take care of that while it was in the shop. They replaced the brakes and realigned the tires for a reasonable price. They charged nothing for fixing the damage from running over the retread. The next day my daughter called to say she was still hearing something odd under the car so we called and took it back in. The owner hopped in the car with my daughter and me and we took it out for about 20 minutes to try to replicate the sound. He was very thorough, patient and explained everything he was hearing. We left the car there and they found another small problem from running over the retread and repaired it -- again, no charge. We'll definitely be back. read more

Background: I do 90% of the maintenance on my cars myself. I saw a groupon for oil changes at Speights, and it was a bit cheaper than if I were to do it myself. Also, I thought it might be a good opportunity to get to know a local shop for the other 10% of work I don't do. Review: Dropped off my car in the morning and came back that afternoon to pick it up. I saw it in the lot as I walked up to the office door, but noticed something leaking from under the engine. I got a closer look and I could see a small but steady stream of oil leaking from the drain plug. Not good. Walked and mentioned the leak to the person at the desk and she went to get the "mechanic" who worked on my car. He came out and I showed him the leak. He then acknowledged he knew about it when he parked the car. Thought it might stop. Yeah, when all of the oil is drained out, it sure would stop then. The manager, perhaps Mr. Speight, came out and had the mechanic bring the car back in to fix it. The manager indicated this wasn't the first time an issue had arisen with said "mechanic" and in fact, he had been relegated to doing oil changes only. About 30mins later they pull the car out and no leaks. I go home, park in the garage until the next morning when I see a pancake size puddle of oil under the car. I drive to the shop (about a mile away) and let them know it's still leaking. Here's where things go from bad to worse. I was accused that because it wasn't an OEM oil drain plug, that was the reason it stripped the threads of the oil pan. The teflon tape they used to patch the leak wasn't going to be permanent, they said. I'm sorry, I've used the same plug for the 6yrs I've owned the stupid car and never, ever had a problem with leaks. Yet, the first time I take a car here, to a professional auto service shop, I get Niagra Falls' cousin from my oil pan? I don't think so. Again the manager said he would call around for a new oil pan and would let me know. I'm not the type of person to go around demanding this or that; usually I wait and see what is offered. I stopped by again that afternoon after work and spoke to the manager. He indicated that it would cost $150+ to replace the oil pan and gasket with a used one from a junkyard. That's right, cost me. For their error. I won't go into more detail about the subsequent conversation, but it ended up that he charged me $45 to replace everything (his labor costs). I really should have had him get me the parts and let me replace them on my own, but I was too angry to think that logically. Or really just argued until they paid for it. The guy had the nerve to act like he was doing me a favor. So, a third day left at the shop for what should have been a 30min oil change at the most. I came to pick it up and pay (i.e. get reamed) the next day and the manager essentially indicated that this interchange concluded our business and didn't want to see my car again. Seriously!?! Now here I am getting angry again. Please, do yourself a favor and stay away. Maybe they took a loss on the groupon deal (don't see how they could have made money when it was more expensive to do it myself) and were having a bad few months. I was going to give them 2 stars because they ultimately fixed it (and I paid for it...) but I still have a pesky minor leak around the oil pan, whenI freaking PAID them to damage and then fix my car. Conclusion: I'm really pissed all over again. 1 star. Half a star. 0 star. Seriously, stay away. Get reamed somewhere else, you'll probably pay less. read more

I took my car for inspection and they new it would not passed because of my window be to dark and still did the inspection I do understand that I have to fix it but they should let me know before they start do the work I am mad because I feel like they don't care about a customer they do it just for the money they do the work without letting you know just to charge you and I spoke to the owner which he agreed that he took the money and said he doesn't suppose to tell about the window is to dark before they put hands on my car wow when is visible I feel that they stole me the money read more

PAY ATTENTION TO THE WARNINGS! We had heard from a work colleague that this was a reliable place to have work done so we disregarded the negative Google and Yelp reviews. However, when we took our car in for a brake and transmission fluid change, our experience was disgraceful. We were charged $430 for the work plus $30 tax and $30 fluid disposal fee. All fair enough. My husband got in the car and drove out, only to have the car vibrating and shimmying all over the road and the Check Engine light still on! He returned to the garage and was told we needed a new valve of some sort (to the tune of $180); they made a quick adjustment to the steering (after saying initially that that wasn't their fault, they hadn't touched the steering) that actually had been their fault. When my husband said he wasn't happy with the engine light being on and them letting the car go with a steering problem, the owner's son threatened him with physical violence, saying "Quiet down or I'll knock you out!" Avoid this place like the plague---there are too many similar experiences to make this anything less than a scam that they're running. EDIT---To his credit, the owner called the next day and apologized for his son's behavior and offered to fix the engine light at no cost. We had the repair done and have been satisfied with the car since then. read more

I am actually very impressed with Speight's Automotive. I also do a fair bit of my own work, but for stuff that either I can't do, or simply don't want to do (lack of time, not having certain tools, space, etc.) I go to them. They have ALWAYS treated me fair. Sure, the place looks old - that's because I suspect the facility is old. If you read some of the stuff that's hanging on the walls of the lobby area, you'll learn that the family has been in the automobile repair business for many years. Bottom line for me - they are honest. None of this up-sale stuff that you get from other shops. Their price is fair and I have recommended to many friends over the years. (Something I would never do if I didn't believe they were a good group of people with which to work.) read more

On 1/12/2012 Speight's auto was to fix the headlights on the car. The car has been seen several times to be fixed and the lights still do not work. The car is a Cadillac DTS. I went to Speight's auto and informed them that the lights on the car was flashing on and off and not working at times. They inspected the car and gave me an estimate of 500.00 to fix the R ballast. I asked the technician if this was the only thing wrong with the lights and he stated yes. On 1/12/2012 Speights auto was to fix my right light (right ballast. I was charged $521.56. I had someone to drive me there to pick up the car after hours. I drove off the lot lot and realized that the light was still not working. I called and left a message stating that the light was not fixed. The next time i took the car back to have the technician look at the car, he stated that it was the bulb and that the price of the bulb was $286.95 and that they would not charge me for the labor since i was informed that the car should me fixed previously. I paid the required amount reluctantly, thinking that they should have known that it was the bulb in the beginning. After paying this amount, I returned home and noticed that the lights were still not working. I called once again frustrated that i had just been cheated out of almost $900.00 and that no service was really performed. I was instructed to bring the car in once again. At this point the techniciam states that it is a wiring problem and that i can bring it in the following week in order to get it fixed. I asked if there would be a charge since the car was supposed to be fixed the last 2 times and 900.00 dollars later it is still not fixed. The technician said yes. That he is not sure how much it is going to run, but that it would be told to me when i come in. I left the auto center in tears. I do not have any money to keep getting something replaced that should have been covered the first time. The car has been returned returned several times to be fixed and the light still does not work. I went to Thompson Cadillac of raleigh to have an oil changed. And they stated that there are several things that need to be repaired on the car. One of which is the light bulb which would cost 1,534.95 to replace.
