This review is mostly for the extremely poor customer service. We went in and ordered 2 soups. We asked the lady if we could sit outside ( pointed to the table where she can CLEARLY see from inside restaurant) and she said yes. We waited for 20 minutes and still didn't get our food. So we came back in, she looked at us like she really annoyed that we didn't come and pick up our food. First of all, how do we know we suppose to get the food by ourself? This is my favorite sullungtang restaurant hands down. I personally like the deep rich favor that can only happen when it's done the right way which is slow cooking the bone overnight right down to the marrow. I've eaten at many sullungtang places including the now popular Sun Nong Dan, but their food is bland, side dishes very boring, and prices have gone up. I guess that's what happens when fame gets to your head and fewer Koreans stop eating there. To me it all comes down to the side dishes which all sullungtang places must serve but every place is different. The food is really good here at this restaurant, especially the spicy rice cakes. One thing I don't feel comfortable with and I know many other people do, is that their customer service is horrible.. I've never wanted to be "that" customer , but their attitudes are so bad and they are very rude. Every time I come they're always "closed".. I just hope they realize that we're in America and we don't all speak Korean and it would be fair if they treated non-Koreans the same way they treat Koreans. This would have to be the second Korean Restaurant I have been to in my life. The first being In Las Vegas, Nevada down Sahara and Sahara in 1/2? Idk but that place totally, totally SUCKED! Anyway! This time around the experience was more pleasant. I have been to Greenland countless times and always saw these shady looking restaurants there never giving it a second glance, but always leaving with a curiosity to go in. It's like when you always go to the same Grocery store, and buy the same drink over and over after you have overlooked the same drink in a different flavor and then one day you say, "eh, what the hell" and you go for it. This was one of those times. I said, "eh, what the hell..." Plus after I was unsatisfied with what I ate that morning, a Burger and had a bad experience while eating out, I was kinda mad/frustrated. What helped me lighten up my mood was the music inside Greenland, then I got happiez yayz! So yeah I went into the restaurant and I swear to god it was one of those days where I just look at the effin menu for 10 minutes switching back and forth to what I wanted to order. Thinking of every scenario, between being super stuffed, order being to big, too spicy, too much of a weird flavor etc... all the weird ass scenarios when picking out a car went through my head. I finally settled for a number 7 which was a spicy beef soup, but then after I payed I switched my mind lol. The lady looked like she got mad/frustrated with me because A) I took forever to order haha. But seriously I think it was because the limited English and my limited Korea language, I know a little Korean; thanks Kdramas! Instead I had the Korean Mixed Vegetable Bowl. I wonder what the difference is between the bowl and the hot bowl for a dollar more. The inside of the restaurant is decent for the space. I found those rock lamps to be a little too much feng shui for me, but whatever to get the stress away and heal your customers. Yeah I went to take a leak and came back and saw my pretty little dishes all waving hi to me and asking if I washed my hands, I answered back and then they laughed at me. I tried the little saide dishes called, "Banchan". The first one I gave a shot at was Korean radish kim chi, Kag Tu Gi. That was crunchy with a fresh cold flavor, it tasted like it was kept in the freezer, yet not long, or cold enough to be able not to eat, or feel the flavor. Next one was, my favorite, "baechu kimchi" that was the same crunchiness as the first, but one percent up on flavor than the Kag Tu Gi. Third was, "Oi Sobaegi" tasted before it was the same taste as any other. Fourth was those potato dipped in idk what sweet oil it was in. But the taste was not quiet potatoes. It had a feel for potatoes, but I think it was more like a combo of sweet potato and regular potato. I think it was a potato, but that oil and it sweat and eliminated the regular potato taste. So that was pretty, weird I stayed there wondering if my taste buds were wrong. Next I moved on to the main dish the... "Dolsot Bibimbob" I think the difference between this and some other similar one I saw was that this one has those black things on top (seaweed). Anyway that was good, but not as good as the side dishes. Don't get me wrong they were all decent flavors, but the side dishes had a leg up over it's rival in that big white bowl stadium. I first tried the shredded beef that was real good and fine sliced, real dry i loved it. Then I tried the other shredded beef all tangled up that tasted like regular beef. The spinach, or "sigeumchi-namul" tasted like it does. The eggplant, or mushroom was good, better than from a pizza joint that's for sure. shredded carrots were fine. Sprouts and seaweed were same. The egg tasted... odd. It was cooked don't get me wrong, but the whole thing tasted like not your regular hen... Kinda like if they were raising live chickens in the back, or had a different type of hen. AH! Yes... It wasn't the typical white hen you purchase at the super market. It might be the regular eggs they have on sale at the store, I've never had them so I don't know if my assumption was dead on. My very last dish was the tofu, I left it at the end because I knew I was going to enjoy it, I did wasn't what I expected, but it was decent none the less. I actually left it at the end because it looked like a pastry haha. All in all for a fast food joint it was good. If you want a quick bite to eat, let me put this another way... If you are out in the dessert and you been starving for hours and don't care what you eat as long as it's food go here. It has to be that I don't care attitude to get you to eat here. But for the first time at this place, it was good. I dig the various sides that come along with it. Plus, I've never experienced long wait time but I'm there during the week during lunch time. I'm done with this place After a 12 hour transatlantic flight, I was starving so I went here and ordered 2 entrees. I have ordered these entrees individually countless times. The woman stated that I was ordering too much food. I didn't care, whatever I didn't finish would be fine for lunch the next day. When the food arrived, the portions were much, much smaller than usual. She felt I was ordering too much food, so she gave me much less food yet still charged me full price for both entrees. I really like the food at this humble little joint. There is a large selection of traditional Korean dishes, and all the items are reasonably priced. Everything from soup to seafood to bbq is tasty. The banchan is solid, and last time I was here, the lady refilled each side dish midway through my meal. Me and my family have been going to this restaurant forever their service is always good they always treated us nicely today their service was terrible but completely terrible. We ordered our food and of course we are use to waiting about 15 to 20 minutes for it but today we waited for our food for about 45 minutes which I mean it's understandable but they wouldn't even bring the side dishes to us. Other customers came in after us they quickly served them their side dishes and they messed up our order instead of the food coming all at once they came at different times and they gave one of our orders to another customer who came way after us. Over the years I think I had all of the menu items displayed over the counter that have a picture. Not knowing Korean, have always relied on these visual cues. Need to say, I was never disappointed. Always happy with the wonderful variety of side dishes and taste of the main bowl or plate. Cleaniness is over the top and never had bad service. Sometimes the English gets in the way, but the food is never effected. I would warmly recommend this restaurant for someone with a passion for new and interesting taste, presentation and joy.
