I call this type of service "taking the client hostage." I asked to have my older set of glasses tinted for use as sun glasses. His response: "Your prescription is expired, I'll have to ask the doctor." My response: "NY state law does not require an annual exam, I guess I'll have to ask Dutchess Optometry in Red Hook to help me." I called and asked the desk clerk for a copy of my 1-year old prescription: Her response: "Your prescription is expired." My response: "It is NY state law that I am entitled to a copy of my prescription, I use it for my own medical records to chart changes in my vision, you are required to give me a copy." Her response: "We will have to write expired on it" My response: "You can write whatever you like on it, as long as the prescription is legible, you know, the prescription THAT I PAID FOR!" Find somewhere else....they will not receive my repeat business.

Last Friday I came for an appointment before work for an eye exam here. I arrived on time, the staff was friendly and professional. I was in the exam w/ Dr Guarente when a friendly staff member entered the room and offered to adjust my glasses. I said sure. Moments later they returned and advised they damaged them and rendered them unwearable. I took it in stride at the time and they put my old prescription lenses in another set of frames that fit (however poorly/clunky)- no big deal. A temporary inconvenience as I was expecting to potentially get new frames if they met my budget. "Things happen.." I told myself. I actually thought they would at least offer a discount for new frames since they just broke my old ones. That never happened. After the exam (and with the less desirable replacement frames they handed me) I sat for a fitting w/ one of their eyeglass stylists. Again- everyone was very friendly. I chose some frames and was told that I would be called w/ a price quote later. I left for work and got a call moments later and the stylist I was just with advised they forgot to do measurements and that I had to come back. I explained I couldn't (I was at work) and that I had to come back after the weekend. Fine I guess. Then what? In the wee hours of last Sunday morning that staff member/stylist had located me on social media and began 'liking' my content then several hours later submitted a 'friend request'. They were up all night long looking at my social media. I have the time stamps. It's creepy and a clear violation of patient privacy. This individual has access to my patient info/home address etc. When I alerted their office about this their solution was to have a talk w/ them about HIPAA (patient privacy laws) and that I had to take it upon myself to go somewhere to have my OLD glasses repaired then come BACK to their office and submit for reimbursement. After having my property damaged and my privacy violated they offered a pretty unacceptable solution- basically saying they would talk to their employee and I have to drive somewhere else and find someone to fix what they broke and then go BACK to their location AGAIN. The experience ultimately left me feeling creeped out and devalued. Dr Guarente and most of the staff seemed really friendly and nice. I just wanted an exam and new glasses. It was only after some exchanges in the wake of this to try to resolve it I've felt increasingly resentful. I guess from their POV they were trying to 'make it better' but they damaged my property and one of their employees was up all night stalking me and then their feeble solution was to send me on a mission to fix their mistake and come back again when that stylist is not on location to get properly fitted for new frames. I cannot in good conscience go about recommending them to friends, neighbors or co-workers at this time. Kind of a bummer. I had high hopes going in. Oh well, I'll seek another optometrist and hope for a better experience.

Despite being busied with phone calls at the front desk, staff were very kind, and the optician herself came out to help myself and others waiting. She was so sweet!! Switched out my nose pad in less than a minute and offered to tune up the frame as well since the arms were loose. I wish I'd shown a bit more gratitude in person as that was an absolute life saver since I'm dealing with finals right now, making working glasses pretty important! Howeverrrr, I'm also very sick and low on energy at the moment so I don't think I showed half the appreciation I'd meant to. Hoping this review makes up for that! They go above and beyond ensuring excellence. Recently, Connie actually consulted with a local jeweler to ensure my glasses were properly fixed. There is a new optometrist who supplements Dr. Descovich's busy workload. He is also excellent and used a process to clean the bases of my eyelashes and I no longer have burning itchy eyes in the evening. I *think* it was called Zest but not 100% positive. Just ask...you'll be very pleased. I will have this done on an annual basis I believe. They can actually check to assess the extent to which this issue is problematic and the procedure only takes about ten minutes. So worth it to have eyes that aren't burning and itchy! I hope you take the time to visit this shop as they have some rather unique frames for sale as well.

Visited this office with great expectations. The time to revise my old prescription had arrived…read more Dr. Varriccio sat me in front of his optical equipment and afterwards he indicated I needed new lenses. Took them about a week to make the new lenses, which will be mounted on the frame I provided. It cost me around $180.00 after which I was handed my new lenses/glasses. Dr. Varricchio indicated I should wear them for few days and come back if there was any complaint. After few days I returned and indicated to him not being able to read fine print as well as not being able to see afar (I could see better without my glasses). Once again he sat me in front of his optical equipment when finally he said "THIS IS AS FAR AS I CAN GO" !!!!! Pretty unprofessional if you ask me. His office did charge Humana my, medical insurance company. I reported the above issue with Humana and as we speak am already dealing with their Grievance Department. Will keep you posted as this story developes.

A Kingston mainstay for over half a century, I deeply regret not having visited before. Dr. Miller's experience and knowledge helped to alleviate any fears that might have evolved in my brain since my nightmare at Lenscrafters (see other review) last spring. Their prescription was spot on, unlike the one I got from the goons at Lenscrafters (see other review), and I actually look forward to next year's appointment!
