Dylan's Oyster Cellar reminds me of a neighborhood bar serving excellent seafood and craft cocktails. Not sure why the name includes the word "cellar". It's not underground! You come here for oysters and that's what we did! I don't get this Baltimore treat called the Coddie. This deep fried fish ball tasted like a McDonald's Filet-O-Fish Sandwich. Came here from out-of-town with an old schoolmate who works in the industry and knows the neighborhood well. Sat at the bar right as they opened and place was packed within 30 minutes. Snobby solo diner to our right and couple of old regulars to our left. A metaphor for the area methinks. Started off with a pickle back (my first) which for the uninitiated is a shot of pickle juice with a whiskey chaser. A+ in the category of disgusting sounding but surprisingly awesome whistle wetters. Oysters were on point with a nice selection of mostly Atlantic offerings. Nice back-and-forth with the gal on shucker duty. There was a trout dish on the main menu that appeared to be a speciality and the couple next to us claim they have the best burger around. I had never been to this Hampden gem until recently. We came right when they opened on a Friday night and things were already quite lively! They were able to seat us thanks in part to a cancellation. First let me tell you about the staff. The hostess was great and got us into a table right away. Our server was very attentive and helpful in steering us towards drinks and dishes that we ended up loving. But they also had bussers and bartenders that really made this place stand out to me as far as excellent service goes! Dishes were cleared right away, our waters were constantly being filled. When our drinks were running low, the bartender would come out and offer to take our order. I felt so well taken care of. And the food! The roasted oysters were the best thing that I have eaten recently! We ended up ordering a second plate of them because they were so good. It's super cozy in there, so whether you are on a date or a girls night out, or enjoying a great meal solo, Dylan's is fantastic and I can't wait to go back. read more

Dylan's is one of those places one hesitates to recommend as they're plenty busy already! It's a noisy neighborhood bar with the very best oysters around, and I know oysters. There are well made cocktails , small dishes, sandwiches and just a couple of entrees. Reservations are not required but don't count on getting in without one. You may run into Dylan himself roving about making sure everyone is happy. read more

I have celiac disease... I came here to meet a coworker to talk over drinks and didn't see a lot online about their gluten free options so decided I wouldn't order any food, and was totally fine just having a drink! My coworker was trying to be nice and asked the server what GF options they had anyways. Unfortunately the person serving us was super rude. I get that it can be annoying to accommodate dietary restrictions, and I know there is an uninformed stereotype about people who avoid gluten... but it's also annoying to have a disease! LOL! She visibly rolled her eyes and said "maybe try a salad?"... pretty sure she might have even been the manager. Celiac is an autoimmune condition and it means my immune system attacks itself when introduced to gluten, which is a structural protein that can be found in most breads or even things like malt flavoring or soy sauce. Which means it does irreversible damage to my body and makes me very sick if I eat even a small amount. I was already prepared not to eat but it's important to be aware of how serious some dietary restrictions are when in the food business- and to be informed and sensitive to it. I said it's totally okay and I'll just have a cider, and i asked if she could just check that the brand they carry is gf. She scoffed and said "Honestly I don't know" and just handed me a bottle to look at and walked away. Her reaction and lack of understanding made me feel embarrassed. Okay let me just get back here and update so there is no confusion...I freaking love Dylan's and it's probably the restaurant I "treat myself" the most at. Everything from the Oysters (duh), to the non-seafood entrees and ever-changing cocktail menu are just fire fire fire. The oysters are always changing, as Dylan likes to get what makes the most sense for that season and what is the most fresh/delicious. I don't know that I've ever had one here I didn't love though so you should be safe but don't be afraid to ask suggestions. I tried a few of the new cocktails and really loved the new "Flower" Gose beer they have on the menu. It comes out a beautiful pinkish/coral color and tastes just as good as it looks. Awesome place! We went after the Preakness to get some oysters / a quick bite to eat. Oysters came almost right away, and tasted great. Our dinner did take quite some time to come (only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars), but we think our waitress might have accidentally forgot to put the order in for a while.. didn't seem like the norm there. Manager came by and apologized, and they gave us two free appetizers because we had to wait so long. They were delicious! Never would have normally ordered the anchovy bite, but would highly recommend - nice mix of sweet and salty. The roasted oysters and asparagus were also awesome. Walked in on a busy Saturday night without a reservation and lucked up and received a window seat within minutes of arrival. There was an extensive drink menu, but we weren't there to drink. In fact we were disappointed there were no sugar-free (diet) soft drinks other than non-sweetened ice tea. It appears the focus here is oysters and libations. We ordered raw, broil and fried oysters. The oysters were great. Initially, our raw oysters were delivered to the table besides our so we had to wait some time before replacements arrived. I choose 6 of one local variety and 6 of another from more Northern waters. IMO the local oysters were the better of the two. The broiled oysters were cheesy and yummy. I'd definitely go back - just to eat them. The fried oysters were creamy and served with a yummy dipping sauce. We complimented our meal with a side of crab macaroni salad and potato skins. The macaroni salad was salty and the potato skins were over-cooked. I did alert our server to the issue with each of the sides. The potato skins were removed from our bill. The location is cozy, intimate, and the kind of place you want to go to enjoy time with your significant other. Unfortunately, although the set-up is romantic, it was extremely loud inside. I found myself yelling at times so my husband could hear me. Also, the entry door repeatedly slammed as people entered and exited the restaurant. It was rather chilly this evening and as the door opened so did a very strong breeze. I'm sure this is a non-issue on a mild weather night or if you are situated away from the door in the rear or near the bar. They ran out of the mussels which was disappointing but we got the whole fried fish which was good. Octopus salad and mushrooms were delicious. The beans and chorizo came out a little cold. Inspite of the reviews, I finally decided to go with out of town friends telling them this is greatly reviewed. However, my experience was pretty bad. Maybe it was bad timing but the menu was cut in half meaning none of what I saw in the pictures here was available. The oysters were tiny. The service? It happened to be cold that night, but I thought I'd ask for chowder and the waitress said, "it's too hot now" we have no chowder. However they do make a nice Moscow mule! Food was very mediocre. Obviously, Dylan has an abundance of very excellent oysters, from small to large, sweet and mild to salty. Ask the service staff for suggestions if you're not familiar with the selections. We always get the superb boneless rainbow trout. The only comparably delicious trout dish is at Le Bistro du Village, where more browned butter is used. I enjoyed the deep friend sea bream with an interesting peanut Romesco sauce; however, I thought this succulent deep water fish, served for important occasions in Japan, was a bit over-done. I have had a lot of burgers in my lifetime, and i have had most of the popular ones in and around the city but one of the better ones i have had was at Dylans, an Oyster place, no way.. However, its real that burger was damn delicious. I almost asked the bartender to give me a fork to scoop the green chili. I also had some Oysters on HH, which were $1.50, i recently started eating oysters and i felt these were ok.. It was a mix between Virginia Oysters and MD skinny dippers. I preferred the latter. Drinks on HH at least the ones i ordered were $7 even tho the menu states $6 for a glass of wine. I didnt like the negroni sangria. All in all great, great burger, service was nice.. cons inconsistency in pricing, as well as oysters too. I was charged $2 for some more MD dippers tho it was still HH. I will be there again next week Wednesday for $10 burger night. read more

We've been here several times but we had at our last visit what I consider my favorite meal of the year: fried calamari that even my son will eat, the whole fish, and both salads - one had properly prepared kale, peanuts and apple, and the other was the caesar.
