We took a chance on a weekday night and walked in for dinner. Felt like getting ramen and I have known of Toki for a while now..or well at least the DC location but never been. Mostly because the ramens came with pork or vegan broth and no poultry or fish broth options. Stalking their insta I saw a chicken broth tantanmen that looked delish. So here we were. We were promptly sat, service was quick and fast. My chicken tantanmen was delicious. The numbing sichuan chili oil with the crispy karaage, paired with a nutty miso broth was just perfect for an overcast day. My bf also thoroughly enjoyed his vegan mushroom ramen and appreciated the cook on the mushrooms as it wasn't just bland and spongy. Would absolutely come back if they keep offering non pork broth options. Or at least the ability to sub broths out. Interior was also decorated very cool. read more

The award winning Toki Underground from DC opened a small (like 30 seats) place in Baltimore City. I had delivery from there and the ramen broth was amazing. I was even more blown away. That is nori on the brussels A piece of pork belly was fired for my drink. The drink menu was small but a got a chance to try them all and there is a flavor profile for you. The ramen was filling and comforting as ramen should be and be sure to ask about the secret menu. I went for Baltimore Restaurant Week and was able to try so many things. But you can go for happy hour and try all the appetizers and drinks for a discount. While we are suffering a long cold spell right now and perfect for ramen, remember ramen is perfect year round. The service was wonderful and the place filled up quickly while we were there on a Wednesday night. I will be back. I came with my partner for noodles on a cold Saturday for lunch while visiting Baltimore. We were not disappointed! Although the area looks a bit sketchy, the inside of the restaurant is trendy with a slight retro feel. We were seated immediately and told that since it was happy hour the prices were a bit cheaper. While taking our order the server asked for dietary restrictions and allergies, a good sign at any restaurant that they care about your food. I got the mushroom shio vegan ramen and my partner got the truffle chicken shoyu ramen. Despite the description saying the mushroom shio had tofu, there didn't appear to be any. Despite that, the dish was filling enough with its shiitake mushrooms, various types of seaweed, and surprisingly hearty broth. I was a little apprehensive at kale as a topping but it took up the broth well and was delicious. 10/10. If I had to give a criticism it would be that the broth didn't come out piping hot; usually I enjoy the first few sips of searing hot liquid and I couldn't get that here. My partner said he enjoyed his chicken shoyu ramen but would've liked it a bit saltier. With tip we ended up paying around $24/person, a little more than I'd like to pay for lunch, but these days restaurant prices tend to be high. One of my favorite DC ramen shops finally made its way to Baltimore and it doesn't disappoint. This location has easier street parking and has a bit more space inside for seating than the og spot on H street. You can make reservations which is nice, the service here was as expected solid, fast and friendly. The quality of the ramen is still consistent which was what I was hoping for. I got a classic ramen which was warm and delicious like i remembered trying in DC. The appetizers were excellent, karaage was juicy and crispy and the dumplings were meaty and good. My friends got the curry ramen and the kimchi special which were all a hit. Flavorful and warming which made the perfect meal during this cold winter. Toki Underground has been banging out bold, crowd-pleasing ramen remixes since 2011 on H Street in DC, and it's great to see the original operators still running the show in Baltimore. I was a little confused at first about when H Street lost some of its luster--but it feels like that energy found a new home in Baltimore. There are plenty of nods to the original DC décor and vibe here, which longtime fans will immediately recognize and appreciate. We started with the karaage and chicken dumplings--both were solid, with a clean, crisp finish on the fry and no heaviness or grease. A strong start. I ordered the chicken shoyu truffle ramen and really enjoyed it, especially the whole chicken leg quarter. That said, I noticed some diners might not love the presentation. A simple improvement could be having the waitstaff ask bone-in or boneless, or offering the chicken shredded on the side--while still keeping the bone-in option for those who enjoy that experience. My friend went with the Toki Classic Ramen--only his third "fancy ramen" experience--making it a solid benchmark bowl. This food is so good! My fiancé and I shared a bowl of the Toki Curry ramen. It's just so comforting. Goes straight to our soul. I especially loved the fried chicken in the ramen. Pure perfection! Im a big fan of the DC location, so imagine my surprise when I discovered they had one in Baltimore! Every time I go i order the same dish: the Tokyo Curry. This one did not disappoint. I tried it with the chicken broth this time, but the server recommended the pork broth, so I'll have to check that one out on the next visit. I will say, this location uses smaller noodles by default, and I prefer the larger ones. They do have the larger noodles though if you'd like to substitute. For my drink I ordered a seasonal cocktail: Not Another Panupkin. It's like a pumpkin spice-y sake drink. Not bad, but not life-changing. All in all I had a great experience! On a whim, I decided to go to Toki one evening about 30 minutes before their closing, so I was able to enjoy a quiet quick meal at the bar. Friendly staff and GREAT music definitely made for an enjoyable visit. For starters, I had the pickle plate which was clearly a great choice, flavorful and crunchy. I got the Shitake Dan Dan Noodle dish as an entree. The dish was flavorful with nice textures, but unusually salty. Came on a Friday night - I would've loved to make reservations but the website only showed we reservations in DC and didn't allow me to change the location. I asked about this at the host stand and they had no explanation, I guess maybe try to call because it was packed. Luckily my husband and I were able to get bar seats. We got the Brussels sprouts to split which were SO good! Loved the mayo and fish flakes, they were sweet and crunchy. Definitely would recommend these. For entrees I got the Tokyo Curry Chicken Ramen and my husband got the Garlic Tonkotsu with Pork. Mine was excellent - the chicken was somehow still crispy even sitting in the broth. The broth itself was the star - super flavorful, sweet and spicy. Also loved the noodles and the soft boiled egg! My husbands was just ok - the pork was sort of mushy and tasteless. Service was friendly, quick, and they explained their dishes. We were in and out in about an hour. Next time I would get a reservation, I just don't totally know. Additionally, the location is definitely sketchy, not somewhere you want to walk too far so be mindful when parking and leaving any valuables in your car. Overall, I'd love to return to try some of the buns and other dishes. It is a small restaurant with mostly bar stool/high top seating which is uncomfortable for long periods, so pretty much somewhere just to eat and leave, not hang out. This is a quick bar only review. Came for a private event but supported the happy hour beforehand. Our bartender was very kind. I got the sangria and sampled a piece of my friend's chicken dumpling. It was happy hour so most of the food was about two dollars cheaper, I ordered the cloud shrimp, brussels sprouts, and the Tokyo curry chicken. Good food: the ramen is super flavorful. Soup (I had original/classic one) was thick and creamy. You can tell they must have boiled it for hours for the soup to look like that and very umami. The egg is noodle is perfectly processed-- melted egg yolk, so tender. Service is wonderful. They check on us frequently, asking if we need anything or add more order. Very nice and kind. When we order they didn't bring a booklet but simply remembered our order. Apparently they know their business very well. Ambience is good too. There are not many tables, but each with enough space in between to keep conversation private. Cocktail (gin with yuzu, and peppercorn) was awesome. I like how slightly bitter it was. I made a Reservation on Yelp, but it was not crowded during the 5 0'clock hour and plenty of seating throughout the restaurant was available. If i wasn't intentionally looking for the building I may have missed it. There was plenty of street parking available. The menu is creative and the food and drink were good. The fried chicken steam bun was a great start to our meal. The chicken had a nice heat. However, I found the steam bun not as soft/cloudlike as I would have liked. My husband and I came for the first time tonight for dinner, and we will definitely be back! We didn't make a reservation, but we were able to get a seat at the bar immediately (this was around 7pm on a Friday). I would probably recommend making a reservation, especially for more than 2 people. The service was great! Everyone was really nice and attentive. One of the servers even gave us these spicy pickled peppers to have with our ramen. We ordered the cloud shrimp bao. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and was similar to a tempura shrimp. The baos did not appear to be made in house, but they were still good. The dish was served deconstructed. I would maybe order this again as just the shrimp. The cocktails were really good! I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but the cocktails definitely impressed us. The mala garlic tonkotsu ramen was flavorful and creamy. I will plan to try the Toki Classic next time. The pork belly was also really unique, as it was actually seasoned and had a smoky flavor to it. The Taipei curry chicken ramen was amazinggggg. I loved that it was still a broth (not too thick like a curry) but had the flavor of a Japanese curry, and the chicken was done perfectly. We parked right outside the restaurant, but we were a little hesitant about the street parking as we were not so familiar with the area. We may opt to Uber for next time. The vibes inside were totally different from outside. Casual but very well put together. There isn't a ton of seating, so better to have a reservation. Overall, this is a solid option for ramen in the Baltimore area. I've been a few times and have not had any major complaints with the food- their broth is rich and portions sizes are good. My group was pleasantly surprised by how tasty their house pickles are. Service is not the fastest, but not something that would prevent me from coming back. I was not much of a fan of the DC location as it is too hip for me and the food not worth the long waits. I finally tried it when they did a collaboration with a favorite chef, Colin Liang of Watersong. The collaboration was simply incredible. We got in with no wait just as they were closing. We never felt rushed and the food rocked. Since then we have been back 2 times and both times the food was really really good and the service superb. The portions are not huge so we k ow to order a starter and main for each of us, plus an extra dish. Their beverage service is very good indeed. We would be here more often if it were closer in. It is a hike for us to get there but we do it regularly. And now we are going to some theaters nearby so we can visit more often! read more

I am glad they made an investment into opening a spot in Greenmount Ave. However, it was a little hard to find the entrance with no sign, but I went with the vibe for the arts. The waiter later explained a sign will be installed. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the ingredients in dishes like non-vegan elements in bun or dumpling. The main dishes were delicious! The steam bun appetizer was nice, but the buns were a bit stiff, I think the buns could have been steamed longer or worked to a fluffier consistency. I appreciated the warm plate, that was a nice touch. The bathroom was quite an experience, cozy blue light, church choir boys music washing into the room. The other bathroom was dark red, which was quite a contrast to the other bathroom. The interior is grudge, clean, punk, and inviting of creativity. We sat in the back of the restaurant which allowed more space for conversation. I would like to come again to sit at the bar and have a cozy meal. read more

Met up with friends on a Friday night. I heard it can get crowded so I made reservation in advance. They don't have their own lot so you will have to use street parking. I found a spot on a side street about half a block away. The surrounding area is a little on the shady side so make sure to be aware of your surroundings. My party was seated right away on the enclosed patio area. Looks like it used to be a garage of some type. They have a garage door in the rear that looks like it can be opened up in the summer time. The waiter was friendly and took our orders right after we were seated. He made few recommendations on drinks as well as appetizers. I had a last samurai cocktail. It was their take on an old fashioned. Taste is similar but much lighter. He also recommended the Toki wings. They were sweet and a little spicy. For my main I had the Toki traditional ramen. One of the worst service experiences my partner and I have had. We had no reservations, and were asked to wait 15-20 minutes for a table. After standing for 30 minutes, we were sat at the edge of the bar with a random computer covering half the table, little to no light, and the hostess gave us glass bottle water with no cups. Service was prompt, attentive and gracious in providing menu recommendations. We decided to take a family style approach in making our way through a menu that left us spoiled for choices. But first, sake. I tried two different options, both fantastic and unique. The 4oz carafe option is a nice option for a single person pour. We started with the pan-fried vegan dumplings, which, mind blown. Exceptional flavor, melt in your mouth initially crispy then tender dumpling dough, with a killer sauce and beautifully shaved scallions to boot. Next up, the sake-battered cauliflower bao buns. Also a show stopper. The cauliflower had a wonderful umami-forward batter giving a crunch to a tender interior. Paired with fluffy bao buns and pickled veg, this was a great dish to share. Last, we had to try Toki's take on dan dan noodles. Absolutely my favorite dish of the night. The trick to this dish lies in the sauce, and Toki nails it with a complex Chinese five spice centric one that envelopes fresh, perfectly cooked noodles. The shiitakes bring an earthiness to the dish, while the cashews add a welcome richer crunch. Miso-chilli paste, pickled ginger and fresh cilantro and shaved scallions complete the bite. I've heard good things about the Toki Underground in DC and was happy to hear that one opened up in Baltimore. They have fans everywhere to keep you cool, although if you have long hair (with baby hair at the top) it makes it a little harder to eat without eating your hair. But the food is worth maybe accidentally getting your hair in your mouth. My friends are vegan, and they had some good vegan choices. They got the fried vegan dumplings for an appetizer, which they raved about. My husband got the silk tofu appetizer (which I believe is also vegan), and we were blown away. The miso ginger sauce it came with paired perfectly with the super soft tofu. The baos also looked fantastic (as we creeped on what the other tables ordered). I might get the shrimp next time. My friend got the vegan ramen with their special endorphins sauce on the side. Our other friend got the Dan Dan noodles that were also vegan and commented how creamy it was. My husband and I both got the toki classic. Wow, that broth is ridiculously good. I'm not the biggest ramen fan, but I can appreciate how flavorful that broth was. My mouth still waters thinking about that first bite. My husband loved it and also got a side of the endorphins sauce on the side. He didn't really find it spicy at all. One of the waitresses was an absolute hoot and so much fun. Service all around was awesome. They do include an 18% gratitude on your check already, but it was well deserved!
