Didn't have to wait on a Sunday at 5:30 but once we settled in and started getting our food at 6 the waitlist started. We were hoping to be seated in one of the tables with the curtains but all were taken :( would have been cool though! The wooden aesthetic of this place transports you to Asia and the servers are both canto/mandarin speaking. Definitely recommend the beef and lamb skewers and enoki mushrooms. Beef was tender, lean, and nicely charred with their signature spicy cumin seasoning. Lamb was not gamey and tender as well. Mushroom also had the spicy seasoning but still light enough to cleanse our palate. We also ordered the Taiwan sausage, chicken gizzard, beef tongue and salad. It was the perfect amount for the 2 of us and fairly priced at about $30pp. All the skewers were cooked for us yet still stayed hot since it was placed on the hot plate. Craving protein? This spot has got you covered for seasoned skewers over a warmed plate. I came here on a Saturday evening and there was no wait! I came with a friend and got seated immediately. In terms of service, there wasn't too much interaction with the staff since you order via QR code, but they will come over and put your receipt on the surface of the table and check off your items as they bring them out. Initially, my friend and I thought they grilled the skewers on the plate at the table; however, it comes pre-cooked and grilled, and the plate itself is there to keep your food warm. I looked under, and it's "powered" by a bunch of tea candles. Between both of us, we ordered some skewers of enoki mushrooms (which was my favorite, super tender and flavorful), some beef skewers, a beef skewer with lychee (super unique), beef tongue (a bit tough for my liking), and chicken skin (extremely crispy, somewhat hard to pull off the skewer). I want to call out again the beef with lychee since this was an item I do not see often. It was interesting because the beef was seasoned well and when combined with the lychee, it added a refreshing note; however, the lychee's textural profile was similar to fatty beef, which personally threw me off a bit as someone who tends not to like fatty cuts (if you are a fan though, you'll like this). Overall, this spot is an okay place to check out if you're in the area. Parking in this area of San Mateo is limited, but the restaurant itself has a lot of tables, so it can be good for bigger parties. read more

Taste is average, don't have a lot of options but enough to choose from. The only thing I'm not so comfortable with is how dirty/unclean they handle their food. The metal plates on each table are never washed, you will see the waiter simply use the towel that's used to wipe table to do a 1 second wipe off the metal plate and then it's ready for the next table. Additionally, when you go to the bathroom, which is also super old and dirty, you will pass the kitchen area where you can peek in and see how dirty the kitchen is which makes me wonder how they even passed their sanitary inspection. I would say if you don't care about how sanitary food is handled, this is an okay place. Taste is average, but not bad. read more

Parking is limited and difficult to find. There are some lots but a block or so away. Noise level was average loud. It also does get pretty busy so definitely look to call or get on that waitlist ahead of time. Food was served pretty quickly and thoroughly cooked. So yummy. Everything was flavorful and juicy and tender. Good attention to detail for the skewers. They had designators to differentiate the different items. Tap to pay isn't accepted. Delicious skewers that reminded me of the cumin skewers I once had in Shanghai. Tasted authentic. Enjoyed the tenderness of the beef and lamb skewers in that order. What made the beef stand out was the 20/80 fat to meat ratio. The decor is nice. I like that some rooms have curtains you can close for a private experience if you choose. Not sure why but utensils are in takeout form while dining in. Will be back to try other things but I think their speciality is their meat. I'll admit, I didn't expect to love it as much as I do (my palate is pretty simple at times) but the spices on the skewers won me over. My husband also likes the chicken hearts and tendon. I had a pretty good experience here at Dynasty BBQ. The ordering is all done on your phone, and we ordered a massive plethora of intestine skewers, more traditional lamb and chicken skewers, corn and potato, and some more classic string bean and fish tofu ones. They're all seasoned very well, but they love to put butter on their skewers for some reason? I'm not a big fan since butter isn't really used in Chinese dishes- usually if they want the spice to stick I feel like traditionally they are doused in a neutral oil? It was really noticeable on the mantou and corn skewers, not sure if it was used on the other skewers that had a meatier/more strong flavor naturally. The skewers come out really quickly. The ambiance inside is really authentic and has a traditional feel. We ordered the cold noodles, they cut through the taste of the fat and acid incredibly well. Perfect for a hot day or if your spice tolerance is a bit lower and you want something sweeter in your meal! I'm a fan. When it was time to pay, we had to track down a server. Can't pay with your phone. This place is a one and done for me. There aren't too many good skewer spots in San Francisco so my friends and I made the trek out to Dynasty BBQ in San Mateo after trying out their Newark location. The restaurant itself isn't too large but it's nicely decorated and feels "traditional." They also play traditional instrumental Chinese music so it feels like you're in olden day China lol. Just like their Newark location, every skewer was well seasoned and nicely grilled! I prefer a more savory cumin-forward seasoning which Dynasty BBQ does really well! Sometimes I find that the seasoning at other skewer places lean a bit too sweet. Our favorites were the beef and enoki mushroom skewers. The skewers come out as they are ready so don't expect everything to come out at once. I wish they had a larger vegetable + non-meat selection! I would love to see tofu skin (which I love at Ace King) on their menu. It's not the cheapest skewer spot but the meat skewers are pretty sizable (not super skinny like other places).
