Formerly Dynasty (now Hong Kong Supermarket or Mon Chong), this place underwent a considerable facelift. At first, I thought they'd closed down part of the store last year and made it much much smaller. That appeared to be just a temporary change, as they reopened most of the store behind it with new areas for the fish market, a downstairs filled with dry goods and candy, and new aisles for cold and frozen goods. Overall, I'm not sure of the current layout if it's better or not, but I do like having a full-fledged supermarket back on the block. Still okay on the prices, but you can often find seafood at a dedicated seafood store cheaper, and vegetables I'd still go down by the Manhattan Bridge. But still, not too bad. read more

If I'm in Chinatown, this is definitely one of the grocery stores I visit. It's got tons of stuff, though as others have mentioned, nothing like 99Ranch on the West Coast. So the reason I am writing, so apparently, Dynasty really is going to be renovating. They were giving 10% off a couple of months ago because of 'renovation' purposes, but then never saw the renovations. Now they are seriously renovating, I think, it's 20% off, and they have no live fish, half the frozen section was gone, and the fridge section and produce were not to be found. I did pick up a ton of canned goods, which I then later regretted when I was walking home carrying all my goodies, but definitely worth it. And for 20% off, can't complain. Just don't go expecting a full service grocery store while they are renovating. I tried asking how long, or when they would be renovating. Sad but true, I think Dynasty is on its way out of here. A while ago I was under the impression that they were closing for renovations but that was practically a year ago. I have asked many folks on staff about the future of the place and many of them don't seem to know whats going on. It appears to me that it won't be around much longer, so take advantage of the discounts while they're still active. This place was one of the better supermarkets in Chinatown. Before their recent troubles it was easy to come here for the things most others couldn't get any other place. There were spices from all around the world, a ramen variety far more diverse than other nearby markets, cheap prices, good selection of Asian groceries, and far enough from Canal Street so its not overwhelmed by tourists. Now the shelves are becoming empty, the staff is depleted, and the future is unknown. Hopefully whatever replaces this spot ends up being an equally good supermarket. With food costs and demand going to an all-time high, it seems very unlikely it will be what it used to be. read more

I can remember it like it was just yesterday... PACKED AISLES filled with all that an Asian girl can ever dream of. ..it was a chef's wonderland...a paradise of all Asian ingredient neccessities.... As a little girl, I remembered holding onto my mother's hand, gazing at the fish tank in great awe...smiling at the butcher and the sushi chef...while my mom used her skilled Chinatown tactic: bargaining. I cheerily skipped through the store while my mother searched aisle after aisle for numerous ingredients. There it was: the junk food aisle. It was every kid's paradise. Filled with the endless selection of Asian junk food. I gave my mommy the puppy eyes and she gave in. "Pick only the ones you are actually going to eat and also grab some of the ones you know your brother and sisters will enjoy" said mommy. Happily I skipped along the way, holding onto bags and bags of little goodies. I always left Dynasty Supermarket with a huge smile on my face while my mother left with a bargain and $30 less in her pocket. lol However recently, back to reality as I excitedly walked from Elizabeth Center to Dynasty Supermarket, in high hopes of bringing that childhood feeling back. I walked into Dynasty with a sadness, a big time disappointment as I saw how empty the place was. My heart felt empty as I continued to walk through the aisles in disbelief. How could this be? What happened? Why? My mind was filled with questions that were left unanswered. This was one of the places that my inner child always came alive....but on this particular day...as I witnessed how empty the place was, it dawned on me, that I may never have back that one feeling as a child ever again. read more

Ah dynasty, my neighborhood supermarket. It's not huge, or pretty or particularly pleasant, but it's got most of what you want (and lots you don't) and it's cheap as can be. The down side: The veggies tend to go bad after a day or two at home, the isles are tiny (read:often jammed) and it doesn't have that antisecptic food-hospital feel of Whole Foods or Trader Joes. The up side: The selection is awsome and you can find lots of cool imported asian foods, the prices are fantastically low and if you're not chinese, you'll feel like you've infiltrated a secret chinatown stronghold, which rules. It's not great for regular visits, but a trip now and then is a lot of fun. read more

Gung hei faat choi, chinkos, gweilos, and undecided! In honor of Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rat, and guy loudly vomiting next door, I've decided to review Dynasty Supermarket, northern Chinatown's top grocery store. Jesus that guy is vomiting like a bulimic with multiple personalities also with bulimia and no short term memory! ("I just yakked, I just yakked, I just yakked, Did I just yak? Lemme yak again just in case, Did I just yak? Lemme yak again just in case there is food left in my engorged fatty fatty fat fat belly, Did I just yak? Lemme toss my cookies so I can taste them again.") Back to Dynasty: this place has fierce selection. My favorite isle is the sauce/condiments isle: soy sauce, fish sauce, chili sauces, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, xiaoshing wine, it's got it all from China, Japan, The Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, etc. etc.! It's more one-stop shopping than anything else and particularly good if you're a whitey or a non-Chinese speaking person of color who wants decent produce or fresh seafood without having to be intimated by the loud, barking, vegetable vendors along the streets (I loves my people!). Frankly, the aisles are standard NYC width. It's not fucking Costco or a suburb mega-market that can easily accommodate three 5,000 lb men in their forklifts side by side. They the same width as Christ-Mart (See my review of Fine Fare in Harlem), and D'Agastino's in Chelsea, Balducci's in Chelsea, Gerstedes in the West Village, etc., so get over it. Plus WE'RE CHINESE, we can practically live ON TOP of each other. if need be. Claustrophobia and "personal space" is for candy-ass Westerners with too many secrets (I actually read that in a fortune cookie! Fabulous!). So go to Dynasty and get all the East/Southeast Asian food stuff to your heart's content. If it had an even more extensive produce section, then maybe it could be five star grocery. In the mean time, load up on White Rabbit candy and haw flakes until you can begin your own session of psychotic vomiting. read more

My first visit to Dynasty was well, a culture-shock. I was with my Dad and was overwhelmed by Chinatown and the vastness of NYC in my 1st week here. I had taken our Asian supermarkets in Vancouver for granted and was now greeted by a smaller, smellier, less varied version of TNT. Damn, I'm spoiled. Regardless, they had the basics of any asian supermarket (actually, i wouldn't even call it a supermarket - its more of a grocery store in my opinion - u guys ain't see no supermarket till you've been to TNT in Vancouver!!!) My second visit there, was today since I was in Chinatown, I swung it to take a look to see what else they had without my Dad rushing me. Meat is cheap here and so are veggies - although how reliable they are, we'll find out soon enough cos I bought a bunch of bok choy. I finally found 2 of my staples: packet milk tea from Liptons and MILO!!!! a Singapore favourite! YES! I can have my milo in the morning now! Woohooo!! JACKPOT. Looks like everytime I send Jordan off back to Boston, its grocery shopping time :D read more

It's been so long since I've last been here that I had to walk past this place about 3 or 4 times before I finally figured out that it changed its name from Dynasty to Hong Kong Supermarket and is now owned by new managers. I was sooo confused and thought I was lost! They added an underground section that has lots of snacks and different types of teas. I couldn't find my xi mi lu anymore :( *tear*. This place is still pretty cheap. I bought two or three bags worth of groceries and paid less than $10. I was so shocked that I accidentally said out loud, "That's it?" before my roommate looked at me, smiled, and rolled her eyes. read more

Not as great as the Hong Kong Supermarket around the corner, but they have the same stuff. The selection is just not as vast, and I think for some of the items, the price is a little higher. Nonetheless, they had what I needed with HKS was out (dumpling wrappers the day before Chinese New Year), so I will always remember this spot as being a great resource. read more

When I need my Asian groceries fix, I come here. They have a good choices of items from Hong Kong and China, but also a good deal of items from Malaysia. Prices are reasonable, and I never have issue looking for things I want here. My mom always asked if i want anything from Malaysia (that's where I grow up) and I said "nope, we have everything here" ... and I meant Dynasty Supermarket! read more

In the past this supermarket was good, but now with the new renovation it is great. They just moved one shop next door. With the addition of a basement floor, you can now shop for many more groceries and the extra space for the meat, vegetable, cellphone, sushi bar, etc areas just make this market even better. There is an technological upgrade as well with atm, credit/debit machines and tv screens at the cash registers. Overall this place is great to shop groceries for dinner or to buy your favorite asian snacks/drinks or soaps/shampoos. There isn't much American items on the self though. Also take advantage of the sushi here, much cheaper than other places with the same quality!! read more

Badly organized and tight lanes, east coast markets pale in comparison to West Coast Ranch 99 and such. There are many products, but I don't know why the bother with American products such as cereal, M&M's, and such - it's all expired and no one ever looks at them. They also have herbs, fish, meat, and cell phone service. Definitely a place to check out but not to love. read more

HK market is pretty organized and clean (as you can get in chinatown, that is). It's my go-to place to stock up on teas, foods, and of course asian snacks, which are generally less-sweet and taste best! :) read more

This supermarket used to be awesome, the best supermarket, especially the junk food aisle. However, for the past year or so, they've been having a 10% discount on all items, claiming renovations. Now they're done to 20% discount. The weird thing is, it's been a year and they still haven't renovated yet. Instead, they still keep stocking new items on the shelves. Either they have a lot of goods leftover, or the renovation thing is false. The worst thing though, and the reason I do not ever enter the store anymore, is because they seem to be stocking bad quality knockoff foods imported from China. I have brought bad candy, and tofu fa powder that doesn't work. They are also stocking Made in China cookies when they're supposed to be made in Japan. I cannot shop in a store where I have to wonder if the food I'm buying is good or not. I now go to Po Wing Hong supermarket down the street from them. read more

Dynasty is one of those big Chinese supermarkets in NYC, it is usually quite busy. The staff are grouchy and loud. Doesn't look like it is very hygenic. So far I only go there to get Yeo's bottled sugar free soy bean milk. read more

according to the past reviews, people are saying this place is closed, but it's not--- it's open and a GREAT place to shop for groceries. I just moved here and it's great to have a place that's similar to Ranch 99 Supermarket to shop at. here's what I bought: 1) Joy Lemon Ultra $1.39 (dishwashing soap made by the same company as Palmolive so I figured why not and I also bought the tropical orange scented version as well =) .... it's soap.... works well! 2) Amoy seafood sauce (yummy fish sauce that's sweet, not fish pungent) $1.89 3) Amoy oyster sauce $1.39 4) Amoy marinade sauce $1.89 : haven't used it yet but my friend recommended to marinade chicken in it (that'll be a first for me in cooking =) 5) Com straw mushroom $1.29 canned mushroom rec. to me to buy by my chef friend 6) Chicken $2.51 (raw chicken for me to cook!) 7) Scallion green onion pancake $2.29 : come in a package of 4: they don't taste as good as the fried version in the restaurants, but they're a substitute, probably wouldn't buy again 8) Vitasoy tofu silk: $1.09 (yum, tofu!) 9) Tenren jasmine teabags $2.99 : decent, but I could definitely go for some Cha insteadd I'd return here, but I kinda want to go discover the other supermarkets that people have reviewed so much! read more

Update: This Asian Supermarket has closed for good...another victim of high rent and the lousy economy. Sadly, many other large corner supermarkets have had to shut their doors as well slowly limiting places where you can buy bottled sauces and frozen specialties. Thank goodness the fresh produce store fronts still abound! read more

Not the friendliness place but has what you need for Chinese cooking. Certain fruits you can get elsewhere but some are better here even though a bit more expensive. Just a place to pick up what you need with out running to different places. read more

My place for some serious asian shopping. The prices here are about the same or even cheaper than other asian specialty stores. They have sauces from practically every asian countries- Viet, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, etc. Wide selection of kitchen applicances (rice cookers), crackers, candies, teas and NOODLES...you have a pretty hard choice to make a selection. It is one of these places where you can buy everything in one stop. read more

listen to yo momma and buy all your produce at asian stores cuz it's cheaper. might be cheaper from the food vendors, but hey, i can get everything i want and need from here, ranging from korean, chinese, japanese, thai, american, vietnamese, filipino (omg they have banana sauce here) and everything in between. i can buy a ton of groceries for less money than i would pay at the associated near my house. i even saw an australian girl buying some beef here so you know the secret about cheap groceries at asian spots is getting out. guava and pineapple aloe juice, 2 for $2.50 what issssssssss!!! read more
