Since moving to Tacoma in 2017 I've been to Dystopian state multiple times. Although most if their beers are bit my style they usually have a few ciders on tap that I like. I've attended weddings & events at this brewery and recently hosted my company holiday party here. The experience was amazing and the guy working the bar was super cool. Recently attended a baby shower at Dystopian, which I was so excited about because it's been on my list to visit for so long! I'm kinda surprised that I never made it in before the baby shower, because this spot is pretty close to home. Parking is easy with several lots around the area and also street parking out front of the brewery (if you're lucky enough to snag one). This place is huge! Super open concept and I can definitely see how they manage to host events here on a regular basis. Also love the vibe here and the string lights, it just makes everything feel cozy. They have lots of board games, corn hole, and a steel tip dart board for people to enjoy. They're also kid-friendly which is nice to note for future visits (sorry if you're one of those people who doesn't like kids at breweries, we're still rollin' up). Service was great while we were here as well. Their beer selections are solid and I enjoyed their hazy. They also have a cider or two on tap as well as a seltzer, if I'm remembering correctly. They have a good selection of canned wines as well. Overall this is a solid brewery and with it being close to home, I'm sure we'll be back a few times this summer! read more

A big industrial space with a bunch of tasty beers on tap. Boom. No food from what I could see, but there are board games to play and beer to drink. The bartender advised us against the tasters because they aren't the best bang for your buck, which I really appreciated - even though we ended up just doing tasters of everything. It was all solid and there were some good options of craft brew. They also had a menu filled with ciders and other options if beer isn't your thing. My wife and I stopped into Dystopian while playing in Tacoma. Free street parking can be found. Discover is an accepted form of payment. Dystopian is family friendly. Outdoor food is welcome since Dystopian doesn't offer food. There is a plenitude of games to play while enjoying a few brews. Dystopian can easily accommodate large parties. The building itself is large and drafty so be sure to bring a sweatshirt or light jacket to ward off the chill. Table service is not offered. Orders are placed at the bar. Dystopian paraphernalia as well as canned beer can be purchased. My wife enjoyed a couple Heliophant's and I a couple Thought Police IPA's for $6 each. I also purchased a 4-pk of 16oz canned Thought Police for $13 to take home. Staff members were friendly. Overall, we were both pleased with this brewery and intend on returning again during our next visit to Tacoma. read more

I love the atmosphere with cozy string lighting across the main sitting areas and comfy couches to relax on while sipping your beer. There's an array of board games available if you want to bring a group. The Coconut Black Circle stout was amazing. I also loved the assortment of ciders available as well. We stopped in here the other night and it is a super rad building. The place is huge. Even if it was packed, everyone would have space in between them. It's also really beautiful inside. There were only a few people there, however. The bartender was really friendly, also. They don't serve food, so you need to bring your own, but it is family friendly. The reason for my three stars is because, although they had many ciders, they didn't have any on tap. They had a lot of tap beer, but I'm kind of a cider girl, so this was a bummer. LOVE IT! Needing some help- Bartender was not cool. He was not friendly, not nice, and just not cool. I am not a hipster, or a beer snob, but dude COOL IT! Lighten up bro. Beer- I can honestly say I did not like any of the options we tried (we got the sampler) and neither did my hubs, who LOVES IPA in all forms. He was not impressed... Overall I would not go back unless I was attending some type of event for a friend, or hosting an event in which I was more concerned with a cool space, rather than friendly service and good beer. These guys have built a beautiful space in one of the coolest hillside spots in downtown Tacoma. I went my whole life without even noticing this building was here, but they resurrected it to a gorgeous state. It's accessible, open, bright, airy, and welcoming. They have a big brewhouse, a long switchback of ramps from the top door, a cool old service elevator somewhere that's big enough to lift cars (this was a dealership, decades ago) and tons of open seating with comfy couches and tables and barstools, most facing a delightful Commencement Bay view. They have a good events calendar and partner with local businesses to get people food while they sip, and so on. I tried several of their beers and noticed off flavors and basic recipe problems with all of them. They need to rethink their QA program, and seriously upgrade their work with recipe development. The staff are outgoing and engaging, often in surprising and fun ways. Curiously, when the owner/brewer appears within earshot, they all go on edge and seem to feel surveilled and uncomfortable. There's a weird undercurrent of antagonism looming wordlessly when he's around, and it reflects the combat/warlike branding and aggressively pejorative comments they've made to some customers. It's surprising and disappointing in such a thriving industry, so widely associated with good cheer and good times, to see such unresolved anger and misanthropy. Most brewery owners would be stoked to have this dazzlingly pretty location and this fun staff. It looks like a slam-dunk success for decades to come...at least on the surface. read more

Great new addition to the Tacoma brewery scene. I really liked the space. It has an industrial feel and it is different from the other breweries in town. There is a huge bar and lots of seating with wood tables. You can tell a lot of thought went into the space. It definitely has a comfortable feel. The beers were good. I had the coconut cream which I had initially assumed to be a porter but it was actually a cream ale which was a nice surprise and a different take on a coconut beer. I also had the apricot Weiss beer which had a good flavor and was a lighter beer since there are quite a few beers on tap that are imperials or doubles. I liked that there were options to get either a 16oz or 12oz option for nearly every beer, especially nice for those higher ABV beers. I would definitely recommend this brewery and I will be back to try some different beers. read more

Delighted to have yet another new option for a gathering and drinking spot in the Antique/Theatre district of downtown Tacoma. The space is awesome and a great blend if warehouse funk and a casual brewery scene. It's just a little loud but I'm not in their target demographic so maybe, just maybe it's me. The front door is a little too plain and hopefully will get an upgrade once they settle in. Something a little more in keeping with the overall feel if the space. Parking could be a challenge but after "normal" working hours if the City Hall staff, spaces should be plentiful. The internal ramp, left over from the buildings original use is another missed opportunity but all in all I really loved the place and enjoyed the brew. Parking was nearly impossible. What a shame. We almost didn't come because it was cold and circling every block was getting old, but I was grateful to find a place three blocks away! Large selection of beers and I didn't *love* the taste of all the IPAs we had, but after leaving, suspected that the IPAs might not be what they do really well, so I think we'll come back again and try some of the other styles. Overall, the experience was still five stars because the space is really big and awesome and industrial and I find their their whole dystopian theme very entertaining. Really nice beer poster art and art, in general. Also a MASSIVE selection of games. The whole place is clearly really well thought-out. read more

My husband and I got married here Jan 2024 and I have nothing but great things to say about the space, beer and staff. Be prepared if you decide to get married here, you are responsible for the entire set up and clean up. With that being said, there is SO much flexibility in how you want to decorate the space. In addition, the staff are very kind and excellent in the communication process making everything smooth and easy. We had a very intimate small ceremony, about 15 people, then a larger reception with about 80 people. The brewery size was perfect for the amount of people we had. We had a catering company come in to set up food which was plenty of space as well. Later in the night, we played our own music through the brewery's speakers which we were impressed by the sound system. There is also a mic available so people could share speeches. If we could do anything differently, we would have a company come in and take things down after us because at the end of the night, we were toasted. Highly recommend getting married here if you are looking for a chill, cozy and beer filled wedding! read more

This place was legit. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, the comfy chairs, the neat tables, and the diverse tap list. Pros? Finally made another trip to Dystopian state. This place is awesome. The vive is solid. The beer is great. My god that honey beer is amazing!! I split a flight with the wife and every beer was a banger. I feel confident that I can make this a 5 star review. I would say the only complaint would be that they have a really cool looking metal art piece on the table, which looks cool, but is not great for board gaming. If I were giving ratings for best "Beer Tender" Sage would take gold, Hands down. Need I say more? All ratings are only my opinion and specific to the particular visit.  Ratings are on a scale: 0 - 5 Stars. Room 101 Belgian Table Beer. ABV 4.9 IBU 25 Light fruity aroma. The taste is dry. This has an interesting taste but not a beer taste. It is consistent across the board with a good dry finish. *** Stars El Jefe Gaucho American IPA ABV 7.0 IBU 54 Nice hoppy aroma. A little bit of citrus but, not over-the-top. A good hoppy finish. A fine, easy-going beer. **** Stars Bourbon Red Queen, Barrel Aged Red Rye IPA. ABV 7.0 IBU 65 Funny enough the aroma is like old fashion cola syrup. The aroma is caused by the bourbon. The Rye stands out in the mix with the bourbon barrel aging makes for a really nice drink. ***** + Stars Immolator Alder-wood Wee Heavy. ABV 8.6 IBU 22 (Bronze medal 2017 Washington Beer Awards) I do not pick up an aroma at all. This beer has a Rich taste. It has very little bitterness as you would figure from an IBU of 22. A very tasty, easy drink. Great taste. ***** Stars Gold Sigil Imperial Honey Wheat Ale. ABV 8.0 IBU 25 (Gold medal 2017 Washington Beer Awards) Very light caramel malt Aroma with the coriander honey in the background. Smooth texture and taste comes up with the drink. Great for large groups! They have 20+ beers on tap and have knowledgeable staff to help you decide which beer you'll enjoy. They have board games and comfortable tables to make yourself at home. From my last visit. Time for a revisit, but wanted to get my original review in: The Good 1. Beautiful, big open space with nice metal and woodworks. 2. Great location. 3. Kid friendly. That's always a huge plus when about half the breweries in Seattle/Tacoma are 21 and over. The Bad 1. Tough to find parking. 2. Bartenders were not very attentive, nor interested in taking our order. 3. The Nordic imagery would have been a plus, but the egotistical language on the website (since removed) makes me wonder if there's 1930s fascism in play as the inspiration. The Ugly 1. The Beer. Not all of it was bad, what was bad was really bad! Dabber Dubbel was brewed with one of the cheap manufactured yeast strains that give off a strong bubblegum flavor. The Honey Wheat, Helmet Breaker DIPA, and The Red Queen (Lana's namesake) were tainted with excessive diacetyl. Black Circle Stout tasted like burnt rubber. Annexia displayed phenols that overpowered the rest of the beer. 2. The owners and their social media negativity. I still have yet to hear an apology for comments made by Lana against the mentally-disabled. But, I see they are trying to make amends to the LGBTQ community for their homophobic remarks. read more

This is a great new brewery added to the Tacoma brewing scene! I have been watching and waiting for this brewery to open for a very long time it seems and was so happy to see it open at long last! The tap room is great! It is a large, wooded room with hints of sci fi added to it. There is also a pretty impressive view as well! I came here the day after their grand opening day and it was dead. Probably because it was a very stormy, rainy day and people did not feel like going out. By the time I left however it was starting to get a little bit busier. Maybe the slow turnout was because I got here about an hour after they opened then? They had a very large tap list of their own beer and a couple guest taps for cider. The beer was great! I had three different beers here. The first one I had was my favorite which was a Coconut Cream Ale followed by a Honey Wheat which was excellent! The other beer I had was a small taster of a stout which I liked but not quite as well the other two. Nevertheless it was an appropriate beer to have on a rainy day, even if it was a small taster. Tacoma surprisingly has a lot of really good breweries and I rotate my visits to the ones I enjoy, usually on a Friday. Without a moments hesitation I will be adding Dystopian State to this little rotation of ours. I look forward to seeing their future beer releases! I will definitely be back!! read more

Tacoma's newest brewery, and it is AWESOME!! Huge open space in the taproom (formerly a car dealership showroom), outfitted with a dark, post-apocalyptic industrial decor. Currently 8 beers and 3 ciders on tap: the ones I've tried so far are fantastic! (I'm pretty sure the Entropy Triple Black IPA is my new BFF). There is a limited menu of sandwiches and snacks available inside, a food truck parked outside, and outside food is allowed, including delivery from local restaurants. Looking forward to many more visits here :-) read more

Big fan of this place right off the bat. Didn't have high expectations for a brand new place but was pleasantly surprised by their variety of brew. Huge fan of the triple black IPA, coconut cream ale (not usually a fan of fruity flavored beers but this is awesome) and the Belgian dubel. On top of the beer, the brewery itself and the renovations they did to the building is beautiful. I've been back multiple times since my first visit and will continue to stop in and see what's new! Our bartender(Sage) was great, would go back just to talk to her, awesome person. The brewery is big, one of the largest I have been to in the area with very nice tables and couches. The beer is really good, we drank 3 different beers and all 3 were delicious so we will make this a stop as we explore the Tacoma Downtown beer experience. They do have a small shuffleboard table but if you want anything more then conversation you need to bring it yourself. They do not have food but you can bring food in or order from the local Pizza place (not recommending because I have never eaten there). Noticed there was a party happening so the line is understandable but it appears there is only 1 person working ?!?! stood in line for a goof 10 minutes and the line wasn't moving. Realized the 1 bartender was out bussing tables while there was a line of about 15 people. We left, along with half a dozen others. We have tried to come have a beer 3 times in the past month and they either closing early and already did last call, closed when their web said they were open or not appropriately staffed. Dystopian is my FAVORITE local brewery. It's kid friendly, but they're aren't kids climbing on furniture acting a fool like some other local breweries.
