I chose this practice because I saw they clean with ozone and don't use fluoride, both of which align with my perspective on health. But there are so many other unexpected benefits. I discovered they have a laser that treats cold sores. And not just treats...kills! Like, cures them. I've suffered from them my whole life and always understood that it would be that way forever. But they have this laser that, if you have an active cold sores, knocks it out and kills the virus for good in that spot, never to return again. I just got a giant one about a week and a half ago and went in to try it for the first time. The next day it was practically gone. I kid you not. If you've ever had these you know they last for weeks and it's a whole process of sadness, ugliness, and pain before they go away. Not this time. Because it was so big they invited me to come back the next day as well to zap it one more time. But by the third day, it was just a scab. Like a cut that was healing. 5 days later it was like it had never happened. Literally no sign of it. But the most amazing part is to think that it will never appear in that same place again. That after a lifetime of suffering through these there is an end in sight. I couldn't be more grateful. The laser was painless and quick. I was in and out both times in a half hour. Miraculous. Then yesterday I had a filling replaced. I'm a baby when it comes to dental pain and have had some trauma in the past and even the sound of the drill tends to trick me into feeling pain. Dr. VanCamp and Jose reassured me it would be quick and easy. And it was. In five minutes he had the filling out and in ten more had finished replacing it. Even the shot of local anesthesia was painless. I still couldn't even tell you if he worked on my top or bottom teeth. It was that painless. And afterwards I didn't have that droopy numb mouth sensation. Just absolute elite level perfect care. So far I've had two cleanings, a filling replaced, and the cold sore zapped. Each experience has convinced me more and more that I will never look for another dentist. And if you're looking for one, look no further. This is the one. 10/10.

Outstanding!!!…read more Having had all of my upper teeth removed after a failed $9000+ implant bridge, and suffering through 6 months of a full upper removable denture - which worked ok (only if I didn't try to eat, LOL!), I was determined to get a full permanent upper (maxillary) implant arch. But being 82 years old and on a fixed income (SSI and Vet Benefits) and not wanting to throw away limited funds, I did a lot of research as to my options and visited different implant specialists. In my research, I learned that often dentists recommend implants with removable "snappers" to reduce the initial cost. But they require removal at night and the plastic that holds them in place may have to be replaces every 6 months, resulting in continuing cost. I decided that a permanent implant arch is what I wanted have done. For the strongest bond, I wanted to get the 6 implants ("All-in-6") for greater bite force distributed more evenly and with a higher implant survival rates. But I was also concerned about my bone density due to my age (which caused the previous implant bridge failure) and implants encroaching on my sinus cavities. That's when I learned about YOMI robotic surgery, a highly specialized medical device that requires an investment of over $150-$200K, used by an elite teir (1%) of U.S. dentists. The robot utilizes the patient's 3D scans to track oral anatomy in real time,to guide the exact angle, depth, and three-dimensional location of the implant.The robotic arm dynamically prevents deviations from the pre-planned surgical path and automatically stops drilling once the optimal, safe depth is reached, protecting critical nerves and sinuses, performing surgery with smaller incisions, less tissue cutting, and significantly faster patient recovery times. There are only a few dentists in Northern California that use the YOMI robot. Dr. Sassan Kafayi is one of them. He is a graduate of University of the Pacific Dental School, and I was impressed that he was appointed there as a part-time faculty teaching practical clinical skills and supervising dental students. I asked by personal dentist and friend for a second opinion on Dr Kafayi and my decision. When I told him that he used the YOMI robot, he said no question that I should go with him. He said he has heard so much about the YOMI but had never had the chance to view it in action, and if I wouldn't mind, would I ask Dr Kafayi if he could come to watch the procedure. Dr Kafayi said he would be honored to host and so we scheduled the procedure. The implant procedure went well and very painless, even without general anesthesia. Dr Kafayi and Serguey, his excellent assistant, worked as a high tech YOMI team, positioning and monitoring the YOMI robot arm. My dentist friend was in the room observing and asking questions, and was extremely impressed by the robot and the team. I am now enjoying my temporary upper arch teeth, waiting for the permanent implants in 3-6 months. I rate and recommend Dr Kafayi and his whole team as superior, an outstanding implant experience was provided by his whole office. He is personable and kind, and explains himself well. 10 stars, would not be too much to award this practice!

I am a seriously anxious patient, forgot to take an Ativan prior to my appointment, and didn't have a single anxiety spike or panic attack. She began by greeting me at the waiting room door, which was just lovely, and apologizing that circumstances brought me to her. In the exam room, my records were already up; she asked questions about my experience thus far; and every step of the way explained what she was doing, clarified why she was proceeding as she was, and ensured that I was okay--all with a confidence, calmness, compassion, and subtle humor that made me feel like I was getting the world's best treatment (which I may, indeed, have gotten). My experience was pain free, amazingly - after four months of prior work, I chalk this up to her precision and expertise. She and patients in the waiting room interacted like old, fast friends. In my experience, a cleaning with X-rays and exam has never cost more than $250 at other dentists in San Francisco. The hygienist mentioned she works at multiple offices, and initially introduced herself on behalf of another dentist. So for this excessive cost you are getting a cleaning by someone who is not a full-time employee. During my visit, the dentist strongly encouraged me to get composite veneers, using sales tactics that felt inappropriate for a medical setting. For example, he commented, "If I were to look at your teeth I would think they are women's teeth." While I understand cosmetic dentistry is an option, I believe such decisions should be presented neutrally and left to the patient. I chose Dr. Arabatyan due to quick availability, but my experience did not meet expectations. Edit: Dr. Arabatyan replied below that most of this is covered by insurance. This deflects from the main issue. Yes, it is covered, but dental insurance has a maximum spend. This eats up a decent chunk for a routine visit. I do not care about this bill or whether insurance covers it not - I am here to call out bad behavior by the doctor in terms of pushing cosmetic procedures, and over-billing for routine cleaning/x-rays. It is a form of theft & dishonesty.

I was a patient of Dr. Shirvani's for a little over two years…read more On quality of the dental care alone, she is capable, competent, and professional; however I have a few issues with how she runs her business, and unfortunately I must consider these as part of my holistic review. At the outset, readers should be advised that, as of May 2025, Dr. Shirvani is OUT OF NETWORK with *all* insurers. This means you will pay the FULL cost for all services up-front, and refunded any difference that out of network insurers provide at a later date. The first issue arose when she decided to drop my previous insurer (Delta Dental) in 2024. Delta has a reputation in the industry for not treating dentists fairly (capping the max allowable rates they can charge, despite geography), and I was sympathetic to this. Her office provided ample notice, about 2 months, and I was informed that they would still submit claims on my behalf (and I would be responsible for any difference in fees). What they did not share was that they would immediately start collecting the *full service cost* up front, despite the claim still going through insurance (out of network). For my first visit post-Delta, they estimated a dollar amount they thought Delta would pay and charged me the difference. They did not share how they calculated this amount, and when I inquired about it, I was met with a series of terse emails simply stating that I was charged an amount minus "what I think [Delta] will pay." Not so much transparency. Strike one. As part of this new process, they would refund any overage at a later date. Fine. No details were provided as to when the difference would be received, and I had to call to confirm that they would, in fact, send a check and that I simply had to wait. Meaning I could be out $100's for an unspecified amount of time. So I waited. And waited. For this visit, it took nearly 1.5 months from the date of service to receive the refund, a delay compounded by the fact that she was "out of the country" and apparently all office operations cease when she herself is not present. I felt this to be excessive, and I informed her as such, along with some possible solutions to help the process move more smoothly in the future. This was met with another terse email pretty much suggesting that I leave the practice. I gave it another few months, eventually got a new job, and along with it new insurance. When my next annual exam date approached, I was informed that she was now out of network with ALL providers (even the ones who pay fairly). No notice about this policy was received in the preceding 6 months. When I asked the office manager if my preventative visit would still be 100% covered, she said "you have good insurance" without providing further details. More terse emails. She seemed annoyed that I wouldn't even ask. Strike two. Eventually, I received a pre-approval for the cleaning from my insurance and lo and behold, I would be responsible for the FULL $270 for a preventive exam. The time had come to find a new provider. After informing the office manager that I would be leaving, no attempt was made to retain my business. Upon asking for x-rays and documentation from the last two years, I was met with even more terse emails. I was sent the wrong x-rays at least two times, and when I inquired about the error, she seemed annoyed. Ultimately she sent the correct files, after pressing, with no apology or acknowledgment of the error. Finally, after confirming that I had in fact received all the appropriate documentation, I was sent a sharply worded letter essentially telling me never to bother them again, despite their screw up in sending the wrong files. Strike three. In addition to the above, during my care, there was more than one occasion where I was pushed towards Invisalign (which I politely declined). My teeth are not perfect, but I take good care of them, and Invisalign is simply overkill for my situation. In general, dentists make considerable profit from Invisalign, so I would have been skeptical even with worse teeth. All in all, it's a shame the business side of things isn't as well run as Dr. Shirvani's care & expertise. She clearly knows what she is doing and has good beside manner. But unfortunately with any dentist, you need to consider the full picture. For these reasons, I cannot recommend her practice as a go-to dentist in SF.

I specifically liked that there was a handicap accessible bathroom in addition to a male and female restroom. I enjoyed meeting another tradesman in my trade of programming while in the lobby. Overall, not only is Dr. I is among the nicest dentists I've ever met--the kindness carries over to his staff who helped hand me the key while assisting a elder patient needing to access the restroom. Another patient offered to return the key for us. It was a wonderful experience that I would wish upon anyone.

I don't know if it was the day, or his demeanor in general, but it was a cleaning appointment and for some reason the dentist himself decided to do the cleaning instead of the hygienist. It was painful and crude, either from lack of recent experience, or ego. Dentists get a bad rap, and that experience didn't do this place justice. Ego has no place in healthcare, and I expected a lot more from this practice.
