It turns out that the two-block walk is up a steep hill, so we needed to wait about 15 minutes for a taxi because walking uphill with all our luggage was impossible. We ended up at the hotel at about 11pm and had an 8am flight the next morning, so all we wanted to do was get some sleep. We arrived at the hotel with a security guard standing by their luggage carts, watching us schlep our four rolling bags. He or nobody else offered to help. The check-in staff was efficient and friendly enough, recommending we take the far elevator because the closer one would involve steps. We walked the length of the hotel, about as long as the cruise ship, pushing a heavy luggage cart. The cart came within millimeters of hitting the smoke detectors on the low ceiling, an uncomfortable feeling like driving a minivan through a low parking garage. When we arrived at our room, we opened the door and there was somebody sleeping in it! More correctly, they were in the adjacent room and the connecting door between the two rooms was open. We closed the connecting door and found ourselves in a studio with a double sized murphy bed with a couch in front of it. We moved the couch, lowered the bed, found pillows on a shelf and tried to sleep. We ending up sleeping only about three hours. The air conditioning was very loud and we used towels from the bathroom as pillows because the pillows were far too thick to be comfortable. Now awake, we checked our reservation and saw that we had reserved a room with a king bed, not a double pullout bed. We called the front desk staff, who again was friendly enough, but there was no manager on duty so they said someone would call us back. We expect in the end we'll get back the points we used for this room as Hyatt Rewards members, but that's not going to make up for the very poor ending to an otherwise wonderful vacation.

The downtown spot puts many of Anchorage's best restaurants in walking distance. Loved that! Their on-site restaurant is also great. They have a super cute pricy gift shop as well with fun and unique items. Otherwise? Meh. The room we stayed in was aesthetically pleasing but not entirely functional or ready. The two beds left very little space between them or to their sides so often felt cramped. The bathroom door, a slider, had a useless lock that couldn't function due to the gap between the track and the frame. The water pressure left much to be desired and the bathroom itself was tiny. The room's condition was suspect upon check-in. The carpet between the beds was very damp and the smell of cleaner made me wonder if the carpet had been hastily cleaned. Which may have explained the splattered material on the bottom of the bathroom door which I could not determine what the splatter was. The room was not quiet. Frequent train whistles punctuated the night. The interaction with the front desk staff was unusual. They were quite evasive with every question. We inquired why the downstair entrance doors were always locked and were told there were characters nearby. We asked if there were safety concerns upon seeing the very attentive, actively patrolling visible security staff. We were told they were there primarily for the parking lot but I always saw them inside the building. The item that got me the most was their insistence we take an alternate route to our room instead of going up the elevator to our floor. No explanation, just insistence. Turns out there's four stairs leading down from our floor's elevator lobby to the hall. That isn't difficult to explain, and not difficult for us to manage. The hallway is very long when staying at the opposite end. The Wildbirch's interior, especially the lobby areas, are very fun and beautiful. For the price point, tho, I'm not sure I'd return with everything else.

A few small positives, but overall, it's clear this place is run by someone more interested in cutting costs than taking care of guests. The Good: Staff were incredible No roaches or bed bugs (Only reason I didn't give it 1 star). Built-in bottle opener in the kitchen. Simple, but appreciated. Onsite laundry is available. The Bad: Strict check-in policy - They wouldn't let me check in 30 minutes early. Not a huge ask, but they stuck to the rulebook like robots. No flexibility, no interest in making things easy for guests. Toilet constantly leaks and refills - You'll hear it dripping and refilling all day and night. Refrigerator is loud and always running - Sounds like it's trying to launch. Room won't hold heat - Heater runs constantly, but the temp swings back and forth. It also makes a moaning/whining sound every time it shuts off. Kitchen with no dishes - Full kitchen, but nothing to cook with. No pans, plates, utensils, nothing. Had to go back out and buy my own after already bringing groceries in. No warning ahead of time. Uncomfortable pillows and a terrible desk setup - Bad for sleeping or working. Blackout curtains don't seal to the window - Light pours in around the edges. Cold tap runs hot first - Takes 15-20 seconds of hot water before any cold comes out. Keycard access is unreliable - Doesn't always work, sometimes takes multiple tries. One day, it failed completely while I was stuck outside with groceries. Even the main entrance needs a key card - So people checking in are often stuck outside waiting for someone to notice. Laundry machines require quarters, but the front desk doesn't have any - Was told to go to a store and ask for change. That's the system. Housekeeping is a joke - They claim it's every 4 days, but in 21 days I only had service twice--once because I asked for it. There's a spot on the key card envelope where they're supposed to note your cleaning schedule, but no one filled it out. Internet is nearly useless - Got 800kbps when it actually connected. Used my phone's hotspot instead. Bottom Line: On paper, this place checks a lot of boxes. In practice, almost everything is half-done or broken. It's a classic case of cutting every corner possible to boost profits, with no thought given to the guest experience. Won't be back.

There's a sign on the swinging door meant to notify guests that its the door to the Alaska Suite (I don't know if that actually deters anyone from using the bathroom that's right past the swinging doors). The kids bedroom and the master bedroom are on either side, both with combo locks. Not sure how "secure" this setup is, especially for ones that truly have little ones staying in that room. The beds were so soft and squeaky, none of us got a good nights rest. They did a good job with the decor in all the common areas, bedrooms and bathroom. The two dilapidated RVs in the back of the property were quite the eyesore though. 100% contactless check in and out. I received a code via email 15 minutes before check in at 3pm and instructions later on how to check out. My parents were stoked to find the help yourself well stocked fridge and pantry items for breakfast. They cooked themselves some soft boiled eggs in the early AM and were happy campers.

We walked those routes many times during our stay. It was also very conveniently located within walking distance of the Alaska Rail station. It is not located near any grocery stores, however, so we did a big Costco shop shortly after our arrival in Anchorage. Our room was on the top floor and we had a great view through the living room window. The bedroom has plenty of closet space as well as a comfortable queen sized bed and ceiling fan. The bathroom is small with no bathtub, but has an awesome rain shower. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Because we stayed as long as we did, we did not receive the bagged breakfast offered to other guests. We were asked what we would like and were given fruit, bread, eggs, yogurt, butter, bacon, bananas, apples, oranges and granola. Basically, everything we asked for, we received. It was great being able to make our own breakfasts! Compared to the price of hotels, many of which are located only a block or two away from the Arctic Fox, this place is a good deal. As well, as the privacy of your room, you have access to a large outdoor deck with tables and chairs as well as a grassy area with a table and chairs and there is a common room and a laundry room. A cab to/from the airport cost us just $25. Now, as for the negatives. Anchorage has a homeless problem. Many homeless are attracted to a soup kitchen located within a block of the Arctic Fox. They did not harass us or approach us at any time, but they are there in numbers and it wasn't all that pleasant having to walk by them as often as we did. Most nights we didn't hear them either, but there were a couple of nights where they kept us awake with their shouting. This b&b is also located near the train tracks and during the day, especially if you have your windows open, the trains can be noisy. We were not bothered at night, however, because the bedroom is on the side opposite to where the tracks are located.

There are no elevators so if you have bags they will help you carry them up. The common area is on the 2nd floor and so was our room. Some rooms share bathrooms. We didn't want to share so we requested a room with your own bathroom. When we checked in, Carol took good care of us, she was our host during our stay. She was a sweetheart, every morning she made breakfast and it was good. Yes, your stay comes with free breakfast. If you can't stay for breakfast just let your host know the day before and they will prepare you a bag and have it ready for you in the morning. House keeping was great! Our room was spotless! The whole place was spotless! The only complaint I have is that the walls are thin. It's an old house, I understand. We are from the east coast so we were in bed by 8pm. When other people came back from dinner we could hear them loud and clear, the walking and closing doors, etc. This was our first time at a Bed & Breakfast so we didn't know what to expect. While we enjoyed our stay we have discovered that we actually preferred hotels over B&B's. If you like B&B's and don't mind walking to the center of town or driving, then I would say give this place a try.

The staff has been super friendly and helpful in every interaction, and the security glass in the lobby I saw mentioned in some other reviews was actually removed during our stay. My only real beef is that we seem to have been in one of two rooms in the whole place where the only thing we can see out the window is other windows. That's not great but not at all a dealbreaker.

After driving from Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, we realized we needed a place to stay for the night as we were flying out of Anchorage at 9am the next morning. So, once we got cellular service back, I looked up some hostels in the downtown Anchorage area and called Bent Prop Inn. The phone call went something like this, Me: "Do you have availability for tonight for two people?" Bent Prop Inn (BPI): "Yes, would you like a four bed dorm room or an eight bed dorm room?" Me: "Are they the same price?" BPI: "Yes, both rooms are $30 per night, per person." Me: "Great! How about the four bed dorm room." BPI: "Ok, I will put you down, come by anytime." Awesome! Another night we didn't have to sleep in the car!!! So when we were finished eating at Snow City Cafe, we ventured over to the hostel to check in. What a mistake. Arriving at 3:42pm, we were told that check in didn't start until 4pm and we were more than welcome to sit and hang out on the couch directly in front of their registration desk. Uh, awkward, no thanks. We returned to our rental car and drove around a bit. When we asked where we could park upon returning to the hostel, the young lady at the front desk told us she wasn't sure because she didn't have a car. Um, whether you have a car or not, you should be able to recommend a place for guests to park. Upon reviewing their website for this review, it says parking is available for $4 a day. I wonder where that was! I know I could have (and should have) explored the hostel myself but it would have been really nice if we were informed about the free WiFi, kitchen area, and other amenities when we checked in. The rooms and bathroom were both clean. It was kind of weird that the janitorial staff were cleaning at like 7 or 8pm and that there was a person sleeping on the couch behind the check in desk. I loved the ability to walk to downtown Anchorage if I went left but didn't quite feel comfortable walking to the right. Like I said before, it was a place to stay and it was very A-OK.

We stopped back into Bent Prop and even though they were nearly full, they put us in separate bunk rooms (women's and men's). The bunk room was tight for sure, with 6 girls, a lot of luggage, and people coming in and out frequently - but, pretty typical hostel. What impressed me about Bent Prop was the staff. On both our evenings, the staff were SO friendly and went above and beyond to help us. If you are on a budget, this a great place to stay.

Housekeeping still came. The second day, after I left the room at 9am, I put up the sign for service and housekeeping never come. It may be due to the fact that the hanger for please make up the room is the same color as please do not disturb. Having different colors on each side may be easier for housekeeping to differentiate. Water - We received a note under our door that they were turning water off for 2 hours but didn't specify the date or approximate time. We thought it was that night so we filled up the tub so we can flush the toilet. It wasn't turned off during the night so we assumed it would be during the day so decided to stay out most of the next day returning after lunch to check. When we returned after dinner at 9pm in hopes of using their tub, we found another note under the door that they were shutting it off from 11pm-1am, preventing us from soaking in that tub but only able to take a quick shower. It would be great if they gave us a time frame with our original note the night before. But everything wasn't a miss at this hotel. The breakfast was good and staff friendly and attentive to ensure the food was filled and tables cleaned. It was great that the shuttle ran into Downtown and not just the airport, so we didn't have to take the bus to and from downtown until we got a car. But overall, it was underwhelming considering we paid the most here out of our three accommodations in Alaska.

I stayed at the Dimond Hotel one night. The entryway is nice, not fabulous. I went upstairs to my…read moreroom and it had a overlook on the balcony in the lobby, which was a little bit weird. When I went in the room, I was pretty surprised how big it was, but the bathtub was huge! It was clearly meant to be a nice hotel! On the downside, in the rear of the hotel, there's a courtyard that has some really cool metal artwork like a giant mammoth, but there's also a shed that's filled up with some junk and some equipment. There's a smoking area and the ashtray was full. It just needed some care! Another downside is that they used Fabuloso to clean and that smell just makes me sick. The breakfast in the morning was okay. They had a waffle machine, some overdone eggs, some sausage , and some cereal. Add watered down juice and mediocre coffee. People were keeping it clean, but it was just average. Woild I stay there again? Probably but this time I'm gonna bring my grandchildren so they can play in the big giant bathtub.
