Kurt and Paul at Eagle River Taxi are heroes. The heroes I never knew I needed. Heroes, I say! After a flight SNAFU, I was stranded at Rhinelander airport. There were no rental cars available, and I was still miles and miles away from my final destination. There was a hotel room available somewhere in Rhinelander, but I couldn't get to it if I wanted to. I searched the depths of the internet to try to find a solution. I found an article... a feature piece in a local newspaper - about the only Uber driver in Rhinelander. "I'm screwed," I thought to myself. I dialed every Rhinelander taxi company that I could find on the internet. Most of the phone lines were out of service, or they were just closed and couldn't help me. "This is not good," I said out loud, to myself. I called the only person I knew from the area and they suggested hitchhiking. "I'm not doing that. That's a hard pass from me, dog." "People are friendly around here, you'll have no problem!" was the reply. The problem was, I thought that I was out of options. So I did the logical thing. I systematically asked everybody getting off the same plane as me if they were headed to the same area I was, and if they'd help a fella out with a ride. A lot of weird looks. I mean, I've never seen people look at me with so much skepticism. I'm not sure if it was my pink shirt or my overly bright smile at midnight, but I got a whole lot of no's, and they came really fast. As every inch of hope drained from my body, one very sweet old lady offered to have me spend the night in a spare bedroom at her lake house before trying to find my way in the morning. This was a nice offer, but it felt a little weird. I did not take her up on the offer, but she did dive into her wallet and pull out a card for Eagle River Taxi. "Honey, I called these guys 2 years ago and they were very helpful. At least I think it was two years ago. Good luck." So I dialed. And waited. And then the voice of an angel crackled through the other end of the phone. That angel? That angel was Kurt, the dispatcher. Our exchange went something like this: "Kurt, I can't thank you enough." Kurt - laughing - said, "We're a taxi company, this is literally what we do!" The delivery made me laugh really hard, and a special relationship was born. Kurt dispatched the very friendly, well-bearded Paul. Paul and I traded jokes and stories the entire ride up. The service was excellent, and I booked two more sizable rides over the next few days. Thank God for Eagle River taxi! They saved me yesterday when I was really in a tight spot. First I called Rhinelander Cab Company, but they were too busy and told me to call back tomorrow. Then, I called eagle river taxi. They were also incredibly busy, yet Kurt, the dispatcher, got in his own car to come rescue me in the dark on the side of the road. I guess he could tell I really needed a ride. My face was a puffy from crying and I was towing three bags behind me. He charged me next to nothing, chatted with me to get me to kind of smile, and made sure I was in a safe and affordable hotel for the night. Thank you again. You don't often come across businesses where people really are more important than the money they could be making. I would certainly call again, but I sort of hope I don't have to. (Don't worry. I was stranded with a broken bicycle 15 miles from an Eagle River bike shop, a couple of hours before the bike shop was going to close. I called these guys, told them the situation and was assured that they'd have a van out to me in 40 minutes. The van came in 30 minutes. The driver had taken the seats out to accommodate the bike. His dispatcher had called ahead to tell the bike shop that I was on my way. They got me there in time to get my bike fixed. INCREDIBLE SERVICE! Oh. And it was totally reasonably priced for the service that they provided. Also, the driver informed me that they'll drive you just about anywhere.
