Definitely would not recommend this place for anyone needing a SMOG test. This will be a detailed explanation of why, because if you are going to leave a negative review that can potentially impact their business, I feel you at least owe them and the readers a thorough explanation of the complaint. My car was throwing an EVAP check-engine light a little while ago and I replaced some parts to fix the issue, so I reset the codes with my scanner and the light had not come back on. This was all in anticipation of needing to get the SMOG test to renew my CA registration. The operator at this location told me I failed because I had to drive 200 miles+ (half highway) and complete the required cycles for the cars computer to complete its checks and for the systems monitors to show "ready". I had probably only driven 20 miles between when the codes were reset and when I went to this SMOG location. Fair enough, I didn't know this, but I researched after and all that makes sense. The light never came back on and I kept driving for a couple of weeks and checking with my scanner until all the system I/M tests were ready and green. I still had a stored code for a very small EVAP leak, even though the system monitor showed everything was green and good to go and again, no check-engine light after 200+ miles of driving. My research showed that this is not unusual and that the SMOG test is designed to ignore this stored code if the system monitors are all green and you have completed the necessary miles and cycles (which is also necessary for the monitors to reset and complete their tests). So I went back and explained this all to the guy and he said that it would fail with a code. I explained that the system monitors are all green, there is no check engine light and that this is just a stored code and that all my research showed this should be fine. He insisted that cars 2010 and newer with any codes will fail the test. He kept saying over and over that he would test it, but that he knows it will fail. He must have said this line 3 times. I asked him if the cars OBD EVAP system check would turn green if there was still an EVAP issue and he said yes and that if there is still a code, that means there is still an issue. This didn't make sense to me, that the EVAP monitor would show the EVAP system is fine, but there would still be an issue that is causing a code. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm quite sure that's not how that works. The system monitors test over the 200+ miles and warm/cold cycles and if they find an issue, then they cause the check engine light to come on, but I don't think there is really a scenario where the EVAP monitor shows it's good to go, but there is still an issue causing a stored code, and the check-engine light doesn't even come on. That being the case, I was pretty sure he was wrong about all of this but didn't want to give him any more of my money because I have no idea if he can fail the test himself just to try and save face about being flatly incorrect on all this. So, then I went looking for another place to test, one that might have someone there that actually knows what they are talking about and I ran into another issue that others may not be aware of. Since my car was initially tested and failed at this location, most other SMOG testing locations don't want to touch it. Apparently, the state has a system of checks in place and if you fail one place and take it somewhere else and it passes, the second place gets a mark against them as possibly doing some shady stuff, so most places just want to avoid that all together and just send you back to the original place you had test your car, which would have been this worthless place. Finally, I was able to find another center willing to test it after I explained how misinformed the original place was and honestly, I think he felt bad for me. It passed no problem, as expected. So, if you go to this Downey Eagle SMOG location and your car is fine and passes with no issues, then none of this is going to be a problem. If it fails, or if there is anything slightly complicated about the test or your car, the guy running this place has no idea what he's talking about and even worse, you may be stuck with him and the location because no one wants to touch it afterwards. There are other places to start and there just is no reason to give this place your money when the technician can't be bothered to keep himself properly educated and is extremely smug and self-assured in his ignorance. I am not a mechanic, but I work on my own car and know more than most about cars in general, so I was fortunate to be able to spot the red-flags. I should absolutely not know more about how EVAP systems and EVAP tests work than the guy running the SMOG station. Use them at your own risk, I know I will never be back. read more

We had a car that sat in the driveway for almost a year. DMV sent the registration renewal paperwork to us but the vehicle required a smog check. Since the car is around 15 years old and it's been sitting in the driveway, we didn't know if it would pass a smog test. So we started the car up and surprisingly, it seemed ok. We let it run for about 10-15 minutes. Then we drove it over to Eagle Smog Check. I was greeted by a friendly individual who took a look at the car. He told me right off the bat that it probably wouldn't pass a smog test. But just to be sure, he ran a diagnostic test for me. I was told that there was no way that the vehicle would pass this test. He advised me to drive for at least 40 miles nonstop on the freeway to help the vehicle reset itself. So we drove it around for a bit. However, we only drove it around 15 miles but were still feeling good about it. We brought it back to Eagle Smog Check and were praying for a miracle! He said that he would try to see if it would pass this time. Then, the bad news came our way. There was only one thing that had to reset in the engine to make it pass. It was ALMOST there. I just knew that it was going to pass at some point. I was advised to drive it another 20-30 miles and we should be alright. We were never charged for the diagnostic test. He was very friendly and professional. Unfortunately, the vehicle did not make it far before releasing a lot of smoke and leaking some oil on the street. We towed it back home and decided to non-op the vehicle then donate it to charity. We are grateful for the amount of patience that they had with us. I'm also happy for the way that everything turned out. I feel that it was meant to be. Also, I'm also appreciative of the fact that he didn't ask us to pay for a service that we didn't need in the end. I would highly recommend Eagle Smog Check for anyone in the area that needs to quick smog check for DMV renewal. read more

If you need a smog check, this is your place. I stopped by yesterday to get a smog check for my mini van and the experience was prompt and professional. Smog check results will vary depending on the vehicle I'm sure, however their service was quick and efficient. In my case, my vehicle passed and I was in and out of there within 20 mins. The total cost for my smog check was $55. Pretty good price. The last time I had a smog check done at a different buisness, I waited for over an hour and they said I required a new $40 fuel cap, on top of the 65 fee, in order for my car to pass! Absurd. So I came to this place to get a smog check. Got to the desk and waited for 2 minutes before a woman came and I told her I needed a smog. She then tells me that they're all eating breakfast in the back that I would have to wait till he finished eating. I said that was ridiculous. She then tells me well he is the owner and it's his business. Needless to say I will never go back to this place again. That's not how to run your business. So I've had a smog or two at this place in the past. Not much customer service but its a smog joint. The last time a stopped for a smog the guy tells me that their machine was down. So I simply went elsewhere. The next time I stopped by I just wanted to swap a front tire to the rear. The guy walked up and asked what I needed. After I told him he says that he couldn't because they were closed, why even bother to ask what I needed? Mind you there were a few guys there just hanging out and drinking beer. Again NO customer service but I understood that they don't care to go above and beyond and I guess that's ok. I stopped today to fix a leaking tire on my car and the guy literally said "I'm not going to be able to fix it because my back hurts and your tire looks heavy". Are you ef-en kidding me? I just got back in my car and left.
