My goal for this trip was to discover more local gems, so we stopped by Earl's on the way to the Volcanoes National Park to grab some food for lunch later in the day. These bento rolls/musubis are the perfect on-the-go meal and definitely trumps the over-priced restaurant in the park. We go the teriyaki beef roll, smoked pork roll, teriyaki beef sandwich, and korean chicken musubi. The meat-to-rice ratio is quite impressive and I'm honestly surprised they're able to fit everything in the roll. My mom was a huge fan of the sandwich, which albeit does not look that tasty but after a couple of bites we were all so surprised by how much meat was in there. Between the teriyaki beef and smoked pork roll, I actually liked the smoked pork roll better. The smoky flavor was subtle and I loved the huge chunks of pork. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. It seems like they sell out of items pretty early on so I would definitely try to stop by earlier in the day. This is a great budget meal site. They have bento boxes you can build, and the prices are very reasonable. The parking in their lot can be a bit messy, and the lot is in desperate need of patching up. If you're not driving a big SUV or a truck... be cautious of all the potholes. The plate lunch comes with your choice of an entree. Unfortunately they ran out of their stewed beef, so I went with the fried chicken. The chicken was a touch soggy, which was unfortunate but not super surprising given the food being prepared beforehand. The bento rolls are a cheap meal and covers you from a protein and carbohydrate standpoint. I'd skip on the lunch salad, our veggies were a bit wilty and the flavors were fairly average. Was across the street waiting for my to go order because the line was long outside at that restaurant;so, I took a walk and saw this plain looking, small shop advertising bento boxes. Got the Kailua pork just because I wanted to try the local cuisine. It was really good. The meaty pork flavor was incredible. The Smokey salt flavor was perfect. The meat was tender and juicy with just the right pork fat content. It was so good, I thought about canceling my to go order from across the street! Seriously! It was so good, we drove the houri or so one way to come back another day. (Ok, was going to Hilo and took this longer route just to come here). This time, got the bento. Everyday he is open, the menu changes. They will have 6-7 main meal choices. You pick two, comes with two scoops of rice and a scoop of Mac salad. This time, ordered the sweet and sour pork short ribs and shoyu chicken. Both meat items again were excellent. I mean grandma's cooking excellent. Place closes at 2:30PM or when food runs out. This is a great local style okazyua, perfect for getting a quick to-go/takeout bento or plate lunch special before a busy day at the beach, hiking, snorkeling, or headed up to Haleakala. They have a solid set of offerings, including musubi (spam or Korean), bento rolls (Korean chicken, orange chicken, chicken katsu, teri chicken, teri beef, smoked pork, shrimp tempura, Korean ono), salads, fried rice, some baked goods and sandwiches (spam & egg, Korean, Teri beef) - all made in-house. Most of the itemsms are pretty good if you get there early when it's fresh. When I got my plate lunch later in the day, some of the rice had been sitting for a while and was a bit soft/mushy - stick with the pre-packaged to-go items for the stuff that will travel best and taste good several hours later Their somen & garden salads were great, but the Mac Salad was a bit bland and had too much mayo. If you sell musubi and your rice isn't on point, you need Jesus. Second trip the rice was acceptable but not perfect. They don't put a lot of junk in their rolls, which is nice. A few months ago, I went home to the Big Island for a visit. Generally, it's more beautiful than I remember AND the food is super expensive. I grew up eating bento rolls. Let me tell you, I stocked up here on my visit. For $20, my family of three could have a meal and a snack for later. Each time, I wished I had gotten more food! Just for perspective, it was averaging about $40 for my family to eat. Now, this isn't a "sit down" kind of place but I don't care! I'll sit in the car and eat in the parking lot! They also offer a hot line of food where you can choose your own dishes to custom make a bento. Who am I kidding? I'm here for the rolls - no tricks!!! I really, really wanted to try a bento roll on this trip. But by the time we made it to Earl's Pa'aulio, we were denied. Luckily the lovely ladies at Donna's Cookies had mentioned this new(-ish) location in Kamuela/Waimea. WooHoo! The lady at the Pa'aulio location said it was past the Minit Stop but before Environet. Perfect! We made our way back and were rewarded with the chicken katsu bento roll. Ono! Returned early the next day and got the smoked pork, beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura bento rolls as well as a spam musubi. They have hot food also but that wasn't what we came for though I'm sure their plate lunches are tasty. My fave was the shrimp tempura one. We made one more visit on the last day of our trip for food to nibble on at the airport. There were no shrimp tempura bento rolls but we had the Korean chicken and beef teriyaki ones. Earl's is nothing short of amazing. It's a perfect example of an unassuming hole-in-the-wall restaurant that most people wouldn't notice just driving by because it doesn't look like a restaurant, but Earl's is where local people eat. Sure, you could drive a few minutes down the road and eat in a food court or fast food joint, but Earl's truly has something special that make local people drool. There are a selection of plate lunches, items on a steam table, and salads, but what I really like are the sushi rolls. These sushi rolls are not typical, but instead they're filled with local favorites like Korean chicken, teriyaki beef, or chicken katsu. A roll doesn't look like much, but it can definitely fill me up. Last week my buddy and I went to Earl's, and we ordered a Korean chicken plate, teri beef roll, and a spam musubi. The Korean chicken plate was PACKED with chicken - like the most packed I've ever seen a plate lunch! It was sweet, savory, and salty just like a lot of Big Island people like it, and the skin was crispy. The teri beef roll was awesome too. Do you ever have a hard time describing something because it's so good and just tell people to just try it? Yeah, that's how this is! Just try it! We didn't finish all of our food, and we were so full that we saved the spam musubi and leftovers for later, which means that there was a lot of food because we're two local guys in our 30s, and we can pound!
