    Korean chicken musubi
    Jessica Y.

My goal for this trip was to discover more local gems, so we stopped by Earl's on the way to the Volcanoes National Park to grab some food for lunch later in the day. These bento rolls/musubis are the perfect on-the-go meal and definitely trumps the over-priced restaurant in the park. We go the teriyaki beef roll, smoked pork roll, teriyaki beef sandwich, and korean chicken musubi. The meat-to-rice ratio is quite impressive and I'm honestly surprised they're able to fit everything in the roll. My mom was a huge fan of the sandwich, which albeit does not look that tasty but after a couple of bites we were all so surprised by how much meat was in there. Between the teriyaki beef and smoked pork roll, I actually liked the smoked pork roll better. The smoky flavor was subtle and I loved the huge chunks of pork. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. It seems like they sell out of items pretty early on so I would definitely try to stop by earlier in the day. This is a grab-and-go type of place with a portable bathroom in the parking lot. This is the perfect place to grab a quick lunch/snack!

I give this place 5 stars. First I love this style it reminds me of my childhood and grandparents. Simple local style food Musubi, chicken bento, maki sushi rolls. The flavor is how it should be for everything. The uncle that was working in there so nice and welcoming great service. I'll be coming back I like early morning it's warm and fresh.

*Spam Masubi Review* Cheap, but there was no sauce in the masubi, which tasted very dry.

We came here around noon to pick up lunch. They open super early in the morning, so there wasn't a ton of food out around lunch time. I ended up getting the somen salad. All of the toppings were really good, and the somen sauce was very flavorful. A very good light lunch!

We called in our order ahead of time for some korean chicken bento rolls. They were perfect for an early morning snack as they are pretty sizeable. They are also made to order so it tastes extra fresh. Come check it out!

The exterior, and interior, of the building is nothing special. As a matter of fact, that's part of what I loved about it; it helps you realize it's an all around fantastic food joint, not just somewhere that charges overpriced amounts for average food because of the "vibe." It's extremely busy inside this place, and staff was extremely friendly and pretty quick with turning out orders. I ordered a two entree plate, which consisted of their teriyaki chicken and pina colada shrimp, per the recommendation of the woman taking my order. The shrimp was incredible and the pins colada sauce that it comes with it's something I now dream about! The chicken was also great. It's dark meat, which is something to keep in mind in case you're a pickier eater, but the char and flavor of it was wonderful. For the sides I ordered rice and their mac salad. I'm not usually a mac salad kind of guy, but this changed my mind and I can now say I'm a true fan. This is perhaps one of the best places I've eaten between the two islands I visited on this trip, and I can't say enough good things about it!

We rolled in with a family of 10, which is usually enough to make any restaurant quietly panic. To make things even more interesting, our group was split in two, with the second half arriving about 20 minutes later. The staff didn't miss a beat. They made sure everyone was accommodated and able to enjoy lunch together without making us feel like we'd just thrown a wrench into their afternoon. That's the kind of service you don't forget. Speaking of service, the wait staff was warm, friendly, and incredibly efficient. They struck that perfect balance of making you feel welcome without hovering over the table asking if you're "still working on that." Now for the food... wow. The BBQ sampler was loaded with smoky, tender goodness, the poke nachos disappeared faster than I could claim a second helping, and the tacos were absolutely delicious. Every bite reminded us why people rave about this place. And then... dessert arrived. The banana cream pie and the chocolate cake didn't just end the meal they stole the show. If you leave without trying one (or both), you may want to reconsider your life choices. The rustic décor and relaxed atmosphere make this BBQ joint feel like you're eating at a friend's house and if your friend happened to be an incredible pitmaster. Fantastic food, outstanding service, and a staff that genuinely cares about their guests. Fish and the Hog isn't just worth the drive it's worth planning your day around. Five stars without hesitation. We'll definitely be back... preferably wearing stretchy pants.

The flavor wasn't kicking nor was it really that spicy at all. BBQ Sampler Plate w/ fries & grilled pineapple $37.95 - Good price point for a sampler. We've eaten a ton of BBQ around the US and the brisket was one of my favorites. The ribs had a sweetness I really enjoyed. Reuben Spring Rolls $16 - Not pictured but loved them! Chocolate Cake $12 - Since it was my actual birthday, my partner wanted to get me a slice of cake but boy are they huge. It was absolutely delicious but we had to take it to go. I would recommend they have smaller slices as eating a ton of BBQ and devouring a huge slice of cake is due for a heart attack. Ambiance 5/5 Got a nice table by the window minus the horsefly. Service 3/5 The lady who sat us and took our drink orders is extremely sweet and friendly. Our service was just okay, she didn't really add to our experience as if there was something on her mind.

The garlic knots were fantastic. Soft, warm, and loaded with garlic flavor, they were easily some of the best we've had. The salad was fresh, crisp, and a great complement to the meal. What really stood out was James himself. You can immediately tell that he loves what he does and takes pride in his restaurant. He was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely interested in making sure guests had a great experience. It is refreshing to visit a place where the owner is so invested in both the food and the people walking through the door. The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed, and the entire experience felt personal rather than rushed. Places like this are becoming harder to find. One thing visitors should know is that the restaurant is cash only. That wasn't a problem for us, and there is an ATM available at a nearby gas station if needed. Just come prepared so you can focus on enjoying the food. This was one of our favorite meals during our time on the Big Island. Great food, great service, and a restaurant that clearly reflects the passion of its owner. We will definitely be back on a future visit.
