Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted with a good morning. We were told to sit at any clean table. We found a spot and our server (who happened to be one of the owners) was over to take our drink order. I had a coffee, being our first time we asked for recommendations. According to the owner they are known for their gravy and French toast. Guess what I had... the stuffed French toast was a generous portion, cooked perfectly and had a lovely cream in between the thick slices of bread. I added sautéed bananas, which was absolutely delicious! I didn't add any syrup as it was perfect as it was. I opted for bacon which was delightfully crisp! Being known for their gravy, how could I not? The gravy had small pieces of sausage crumbled in it, creamy and milk based took me back to grandmas kitchen. Inside is rather small, so go early. This place is definitely off the beaten path, but it is worth the drive. Only serving breakfast, make sure you check the hours before making the trek. This is the only place I have ever eaten, that has spicy sausage gravy & I order this every time. Portions are definitely adequate & the prices are very reasonable. There is a warm family type feel, as soon as you enter the place and all employees seem very friendly. My only knock is seating/parking. This morning we traveled to St. Louisville (east of columbus) to dine at this local gem. You can tell as soon as you walk in this is a locals favorite breakfast spot. The owner was zipping around and knew most of the customers by name. I had the Workin' Mans Breakfast Sandwich on an everything bagel (servers recommendation) It came with a maple sausage steakette with egg and horseradish cheese. It was delicious I was happy that it was easy to eat since some bagel sandwiches can be challenging. My only complaint are the fried potatoes. They are literally small pieces of French fries (and not very good fries at that) Hubs had the sausage, pepper and onion omelet, which he enjoyed as well. UPDATE - Another amazing breakfast at Early Birds. I decided to get something different this time. Usually when this happens I get disappointed that I didn't stick with my "usual." However, that didn't happen. Since I had already had corned beef hash during the week, I went for the Tot Stack. The creamiest, tastiest sausage gravy I'd had in a while, on crispy tater tots. Two eggs over easy. Toast and a side of their Black Market hot sauce, coffee. Perfect breakfast. This is a place where the regulars are known by their first name and get a hug. The bagel was perfect texture for a sandwich. The sausage fit perfectly from edge to edge on the bagel. Took my two boys there for breakfast this morning. Absolutely delicious. Super fun experience in a real small diner. Everything is made just like my mama would've made it! Their motto should be overpriced food with rude service. Sure, the food isn't bad - for Licking County, but I can think of at least two places that serve a better breakfast. What really doesn't work for me though is the service. I'm not sure what restaurant all of these glowing reviews are referencing in regard to friendly service, but that's not what I've seen or experienced firsthand. The staff yell at one another, sometimes at patrons, and terms such as "welcoming" and "friendly" aren't exactly words I'd use to describe the atmosphere. The owner in particular has a biting attitude, which has often left me to wonder if she was trying to be funny or was she actually being mean? And I truly think it could be the latter. If you have any level issue of social awkwardness or anxiety, this isn't the place for you because you'll come away feeling small and agitated when you just wanted a meal. If you want a decent meal and rude service, where the staff might yell at or make fun of you, this is your place. However, if you're looking for eggs without the added bonus of feeling stupid, try somewhere else. read more

Let me first start off by saying that you will never opt for Bob Evans for breakfast if this is close by, ever again. This little diamond in the ruff will surprise you, I swear!! The staff are about the nicest people, they make you feel welcomed from the time you step in, until it's time to go. The place has a wonderful small town feeling and everyone seems to know everyone. You will too by the time you leave as well! Our meals were absolutely fantastic and I am still thinking about mine. I had the corn griddle cakes with a maple sausage steakette, with scrambled eggs. Those griddle cakes were so so so delicious with the sausage. I could have seriously eaten two servings! My husband got the stuffed French toast. It came with a cream cheese filling of a generous size. Our only suggestion here would be to add some fruit to the stuffing, but it was delicious! The special for the day was cheesy shrimp, and grits. That was killer. I mean, how can you go wrong there? I don't know, and clearly early birds is getting it right. Our friends got the huevos rancheros with two sunny side up eggs. I could not believe my eyes when it got to the table. The plate looked like authentic Mexican fare and smelled heavenly. They also got the tater tot stack. This had tots, cheese, sausage and eggs all mixed together! I simply can not wait to go back. I like to kayak. Every time you drop the kayak in the water you get a small thrill. What amazing thing is going to happen on this trek? That's how I feel walking in to this little side joint. I didn't think it was possible for them to one up the corncakes (see earlier review), but they did and they did it in such a cool, wonky way. Captain Crunchberry French Toast. Yes. Captain Crunch. The whole plate smelled like my childhood. It made me long for Bugs Bunny and Johnny Quest. The light coating of crushed cereal on the thick grilled toast along with the generous fresh berry topping was perfection. No syrup needed.
