We were so impressed with Early Terrible during our last visit to Woodstock that we simply had to go back this time. Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy on this occasion, so enjoying their sprawling outdoor area was out of the question. Instead, we grabbed some drinks from the bar and took them over to one of their worn-in leather couches. My first cocktail was the Jalapeno Margarita with its inclusion of blood orange puree. I liked it well enough, but it had a lot of orange flavor, which I was not super into. I preferred my companion's Smoke Signals, which was like a spicy mezcal margarita with pineapple. Secondly, I had their Hot Apple Cider spiked with mezcal, which I enjoyed more, despite (or, rather, in spite of) it being super boozy. From the log cabin-ish vibe to the friendly staff and excellent cocktails, Early Terrible is a creative lounge worth exploring. read more

The cocktails here are heavenly! Simply ambrosial. We sat outside on a hot & lazy afternoon in the garden, basking in the lovely ambience, sensual wafts of incense, and colorful music, and felt transported to some exotic locale. The interior bar is cool too - intimate, lodgey - with more of a party atmosphere at night. The staff all seem arty, bohemian and hip. On Fri-Sun, you can order wood-fired pizza from the Mud Club next door (same owner). We had a sausage and shiitake pie and it did not disappoint! The bar nibbles are otherwise quite light and limited, so come prepared to drink and dance but not stuff your face, unless you come on pizza days. Would I be a regular if I were local? This WAS a top 5 bar for me. That's not a top 5 in Woodstock, it's top 5 anywhere and that includes regular jaunts in New York as well as Seattle. Décor was amazing as were the plethora of outdoor firepits. Service, drinks and food next door @ Mud Club were all way above par. Treehousey disco witch vibe cocktail bar just east of Tinker street. No food, but the mud club next door has food on weekends (apparently). The inside and outside are different worlds, both great. Outside in the late afternoon felt like a place out of the shire, the inside felt like a forest witchy disco funk club. The bartenders were knowledgeable and fun and made us a mocktail/non-alcoholic cocktail despite not having one on the menu (I'm sober, partner is not). If your idea of climbing up into a treehouse will most likely bring to mind a stretch of nostalgia of your childhood years, then Early Terrible on Mill Hill Rd in Woodstock might be for you. The design gives off 'treehouse' vibes- but don't worry- you seriously aren't climbing one. The large outdoor gravel area looks like you're in a forest. There are pergolas adorned with tree branches, lots of seating tucked away- even for a crisp Sunday night, sitting outside was cozy. Since we just grabbed some bites a door down, coming here to wrap up our weekend was in order. You'll notice the small u-shaped bar, the 2 large sofas, more seating by the wall and their disco ball. Don't be concerned about booking- there's no such thing, just come as you are, grab a seat if you can indoors or find slate, a wooden bench or chair to sit on outside. The menu is strictly on cocktails- but, there's a nice tapas selection. I was jiving to 80s pop- but speak up when you're ordering inside, because the music is louuuud- for the small space. Their Lychee Martini called me and hubs had the Maker's on the rocks. Great lychee taste on mine but for the $18 price tag, I expected strength. Service from the young gals making drinks was nice- just wished they had a better hand. I'd return because the energy is fun- but I'd also speak up on cocktail strength. On a relatively cold Saturday afternoon, we decided to checkout Early Terrible for their specialty cocktails. Their setup is very unique and the place has major wintery vibes! Lots of outdoor seating with fireplace in and around seating - enough to keep you warm enough as you enjoy their spirit forward cocktails. We ordered the Mezcal Penicillin ($17) and Smoke Signals ($19) both mezcal based cocktails which were prepared by, one of the most stunning and attractive bartenders / cocktail mixers. They do tend to get busy, so your cocktails do take a while to get ready, but the pretty looking ladies keep you occupied at the bar! Cocktails though are absolutely amazing and have a serious punch and flavor to it. We spent close to two hours at this location and there was enough for our toddler to be occupied with as well, including three swings at the entrance of this establishment. This was one of the few bookmarks I'd prioritized visiting during our recent vacation to Vermont and Woodstock. Three entirely independent coworkers had suggested Early Terrible when I mentioned I was taking a road trip up north. It's clear that word's gotten out about this den of debauchery. Having recently seen the touring production of Moulin Rouge, I especially appreciated sipping on my perfectly executed mezcal penicillin while gazing at the casual outdoor disco ball through the heat haze of the fire pit we'd parked ourselves next to. Between the Euro-pop music pumping through the sound system, the soothing gingery spice of my cocktail, and the mild eye-watering smoke rising from the blaze, I could have very well been in Bohemian Paris. Our drinks were superb -- easily on par with many of the most vaunted cocktail lounges in the city. We also sampled the salmon crostini, because the croquettes we wanted were sadly unavailable. They don't come cheap, but the portion is very substantial; one order is enough to serve as an entrée for one or a generous snack for two. I was also pleasantly impressed and surprised at the diversity of clientele. We showed up around 630pm on a Thursday evening and I observed representation across many ethnicities, genders, ages, and sexualities (ahem, that would be us). There were families toting both elders and stroller-bound babies, someone had an extremely shaggy dog in tow, a few couples (again, of varying ages), and an entire Asian household arrived as we were leaving. It was certainly the most vibrant cast of characters we'd encountered since leaving Manhattan. As J was closing out our tab, I wandered outside for fresh air. A few steps away from the door, I unexpectedly encountered a warm glow. It turns out that heat lamps were camouflaged among the tree branches adorning the deck seating; I hadn't even noticed them from afar, because they blended in so well to the decor. That's even more enticement to bundle up and return later on in the fall for the steamy Halloween festivities! This is definitely one stop I wouldn't want to miss when passing through the area. I'd be surprised if there's anything quite like Early Terrible within a fifty mile radius. After all, it's not everyday one gets served luscious libations by a vegan pole dancer while enjoying a campfire at sunset. read more

What a vibe! A must-visit when in Woodstock. You can hang out during the day, and at night they serve wood-oven pizza til a certain time along with other items on the menu. Absolutely love the decor of the trees intertwined in the structure of the bar making it feel like you're in the scene of Hobbitland in New Zealand somewhere. There is bar seating as well as little nooks and crannies and two big couches. The outdoor seating is plentiful and is so nice to lounge on a nice day. We only ordered some glasses of wine and enjoyed people-watching while we waited for our dinner reservation to start. We were exposed to Early Terrible via a TikTok recommendation. When we arrived, we weren't sure we were at the right location. Many people were outside in little nooks and casual seating. There was a bar outside serving beer and wine, and a full service bar indoors. Inside the atmosphere was dark, sultry, and inviting. Spoiler Alert: this business does NOT live up to its name. Not a single terrible thing about it. Early? I suppose they open early enough for a bar (day drinking is def a thing in Woodstock). I love how Early Terrible is tucked back there from the main street like a precious secret. In fact we walked by a couple times over the past year and didn't realize a bar was back there until just recently. Picture a "campus of cool," where a beautifully landscaped area separates the bar, Early Terrible from a treehouse that houses The Mud Club, a coffeehouse. We had our first cocktail in a bar here this past Saturday... since March, you know, right before the stuff hit the fan. I absolutely love the ambiance, which totally reminds me of a refined Pandora - the World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom (minus the otherworldly creatures, of course). And that's a huge compliment because that is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen. Indoors is cave-like, but it opens to a wrap-around deck/patio area. There is also a back area with tables and umbrellas. We ordered up two drinks (felt almost foreign to be doing this, gotta say!) a mojito and mezcal mule, expertly mixed by a really nice bartender and sat outside. There is a very limited food menu, but no vegan options, sadly. Prices may give some pause, about $15 bucks a pop. That's OK, though as I look at this place as something out of the ordinary, the perfect place to stop for a drink and to feel like you're in some kind of fantasyland. You might expect to see some kind of nymph peeking out around the corner, not gonna lie. I imagine the nighttime vibe is just as, if not more, magical. read more

A great spot in Woodstock to come for some beverages and chill relaxation. A vibe that will remind you of Brooklyn, like a Williamsburg setup. A disco ball, vintage couches and chairs, wood table, cool rug, lots of plants, good looking bartenders, and smooth drinks. Also a few apps if you choose to dip and dive while you're there. We got a bunch of choices: An Old Fashioned, Negroni, Old Forester and Strawberry Blondy, all were well made and enjoyed for a mid day sip. What a whimsical and magical place! The hubby and I went for some drinks and felt like we walked into a fantastical place. The outside was definitely the place to be where you could sit around a fire pit at night or hang out in unique sitting areas. The bar had a spooky witchy vibe and the most unique bar tap I've ever seen. Their drink menu was imaginative and they also offered some food which we didn't try because we had just come from dinner. Service was ok. The bartenders were fun to watch when making drinks but weren't overly friendly but allowed us to keep to ourselves. I'm a little conflicted about this place, but overall, I settled on a 4 star review because its probably one of the better places to grab a drink in the area. The space itself is an easy 5 stars. In the warmer months there are a number of outdoor seating options for a drink, including some near fire pits. They've decorated the patio with chandeliers hung from tress, and it has a warm atmosphere all around. The service, however, didn't earn this place 5 stars. They were friendly enough, but seemed understaffed and two drinks too far too long to make--not to mention the line to get to order them! Maybe its just the overall slow pace of the area, but service was less than ideal. The drinks themselves were good. I'd say they were standard cocktails that I'd get at a handful of other places. They weren't anything amazing, but they were also more than just a drink with two ingredients. They were each close to $20 though, which again, knocked the review down. Of the local offerings, Early Terrible is worth a visit, especially for a pre-dinner drink. I don't know if I'd suggest spending the night here and running up an expensive tab for the atmosphere alone though. read more

As other reviewers have mentioned, this place is a vibe! The decor is really unique and the place is dimly lit and kind of reminds me of some speakeasy bars I've been to before. The drinks are well-made, but I think too expensive for what they are. There is definitely a bit of a wait to order drinks as well, and even takes a while to make them. When we first arrived it took a while to find a seat, but while we were there we realized most people just grab one round of drinks and then leave, so chairs will open up as people rotate out. We ordered the brie and really liked it! I had never thought about grilling brie before but will definitely do so I the future. For drinks, I'd recommend Part time lover and bee's knees! read more

There was no hostess in sight and no way to figure out where to order. We walk up to the bar. There are five people behind the bar - one "mixologist" and four guys standing around and laughing. No one makes eye contact. No one says "I will be right with you." They are all studiously NOT acknowledging our presence. So we left. Newsflash: It's called the HOSPITALITY BUSINESS. We were only in Woodstock for about a week, and early in the season (late March), so I feel like we were lucky to hit up Early Terrible. I'm not sure if there are similar joints elsewhere in Woodstock, I kinda doubt it, but it def had a unique vibe as far as cocktail bars go. Like, getting a quality drink in a cut-glass tumbler to go sip by a firepit? Maybe in Brooklyn, about ... 15 years ago? Nowhere downstate has space like this, and few places upstate (okay, "upstate") have drinks like these. There was definitely a weird vibe going on, and I'm not talking about Woodstock weird, or hipster weird. Probably just "breaking out of the winter blues" weird. My favorite bar in Woodstock! Super friend staff and great cocktails along with some awesome tapas! DO NOT MISS checking this place out for a snack and drink while in town. We stayed a couple nights before a friends wedding and went to this place 3 times in the two days! The last time I sat with a perfect view of the tiny cook station and was super impressed with the chef pumping out such outstanding for in such a small space!!! I want to love this place. Pretty cool set of spaces with the Mud pizza joint and this, cool outdoor areas. Also inside Early Terrible looks cool. But some odd things that made me think everyone in this town is on an acid trip that never quite ended... 1) menus were confusing. There is a today's specials menu. It's is just drinks. Then there is a cocktails menu (also drinks obviously). Then there is a food menu. Then there is a patio bar menu (which is also just drinks). 2) you order from the bar outside. Or the bar inside (it's very dark in there though). You can pay and get a number, they'll bring the food to you once ready. 2b) unless you want to order a beer. Then you need to go to the inside bar to order. 3) the beers are not on any of the three drink menus! 4) if you ask what beers they have, it's kind of painful. I asked like 4 times and eventually got the name of one that i wanted (the only one that wasn't a pilsner basically). 5) like Mud, overpriced. Got a sausage platter which cost 22 bucks, was a joke. Two baby links and a pinch of salad greens. But at least there was a cute lemon wedge slice on the plate :P This town is not a good foodie destination IMO. read more

After the New Year started, we were a big party of 8, and were having trouble getting seated anywhere. I knew if anyone could seat us, the Croatians could -- being half Croat myself. I found Early Terrible NYC on line, made the resevrvation and all was set. After we arrived, we found the funny name has really nothng to do with the service, food and atmosphere AT ALL. We were treated like royalty by the our servers and staff. Everything was absolutely delicious! The ajvar was fresh, the octopus, sea bass, duck and blitva were all as if we were dining in Dubrovnik or Split or anywhere along the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia. Same with the desserts, especially the palačinke -- Croatian crepes with fresh fruit. Look, take it from me, one who knows, one who has been enjoying Croatian cuisine for 59 years, you will not be disappointed one bit, this is the real deal and is really delicious! Ughh. Very cute spot in Woodstock. However we do hate the way they made their customers line up during Covid 2020. It's one line to order to the bartender, and the bartender making your drink while everyone still waiting in that line. Kind of stupid. And you wait for your food with a number tag at anywhere you want. Which we waited for more than 30 minutes for 5 burgers (with no temperature choices, they only make medium) and a quesadilla. And they forgot the quesadilla, so that was almost a 45 minutes wait. Left annoyed unfortunately. read more

It was almost a really fun bar, but it was hard to get past that in 2022 all the women working there are wearing straight-up lingerie while the single male bartender is normally dressed. It's the values of the sixties for sure. Long live the patriarch in Woodstock. I like my bartenders hot and ferocious not desperate and creepy. At least make the dude wear pasties too!
