I have also tried their deli sandwiches. Highly recommend any of them! I reached out to their customer service via the email address they had online. I saw that they had a sandwich that paid an homage to the Vietnamese Banh Mi, but incorrectly spelled "Bhan" Mehuron. The owner reached back out to me via email the very next day. We had a great conversation and he stated that they will look into correcting the misspelling. It warms my heart to have my culture's food be shared within this community and it's wonderful to see an owner really take pride in what they offer. Great customer service and inventory. I highly recommend and will be back anytime I am in the area.

But I have to give credit where it's due. There's a lot of awesomeness going on at Shaw's, too, that we need to acknowledge. Shaw's rotisserie chicken is fabulous for a grocery store -- a delicious, easily customizable dinner option if you're too tired to cook and don't feel like doing the apres ski meal out because of, well, youknowhat. . Also, they also have fresh oysters!!! Large, mature Wellfleets in Dec. this year for a mere 75 cents/oyster. (They were fresh, aggressively briny as east coast oysters are.) There are live lobsters, well priced major label products of all kinds, especially if you shop weekly deals. (Cabot cheese always seems to be on sale... and frankly, that shiznit is good!) There are fairly priced wines from major label vineyards. They are not as esoteric as some you might find at Mehuron's, but you can certainly find excellent, well-priced options for a Christmas crowd. Most importantly for us, though: Staff were so deeply kind despite pandemic / nation-wide economic and racial stressors this year. We have to give a special shout out to the really, really lovely human wearing a Pride pin who encouraged the lobsters to be more active for my fascinated 6-year old. (Frankly, captive lobsters in a tank always make me sad, but he did this from a kind and generous place.) I think he may have been the same employee (wearing a "Joe" name tag) who dressed as Santa in a kilt on Christmas Eve Day and gave my same 6-year old a candy cane. This truly made her day. (She talked about how she met Real Santa at a grocery store to anyone who would listen for hours after.) The transplant from Tennessee who worked the cash register every day we were there was friendly and cheerful to everyone, seemed to be known by everyone. This place could be a showcase of so many valley products, but I guess this is what you get with commoditized convenience stores focusing on selling scratch tickets, cigarettes and gas. Talk about a missed opportunity. What it does have is a very clean bathroom tho.

But this past fall, our visit there took the cake! We arrived at the lodge and discovered that the entire supply of blankets had been sent to the cleaners. This is Vermont, people! Blankets are necessary! There weren't any stores nearby that were open, so we were thinking we'd make due with our jackets and hope for the best. We also thought some beer might help, so we stopped by the Village Grocery for supplies (they have a really good beer and wine selection, btw.) While mentioning our plight to one of the guys who works there, he was kind enough to call the owner. The owner actually went out of his way to drive miles away to his home and come back with blankets for us. I couldn't believe it. His over-the-top hospitality to out-of-towners blew me away. I still so grateful and will always remember this kind gesture. I learned that his father ran the store back in the day, so it is a family legacy, which is so cool in this day of corporate greed . More importantly, I also love this store!!! They have a great selection of groceries, including local Vermont maple syrup, a nice coffee selection, super cute deli (serving breakfast and lunch sandwiches etc. until 3pm, I think) and plenty of other good stuff too. If you're lucky and happen to be there on the right day, you can score some Heady Topper or Lawson's Finest Liquids, and the staff are always so genuine and friendly. Stop by if you're in town!

Their deli has great food either cooked to order or serve-yourself hot dishes like chili and Mac and Cheese. After hours for the deli, you can still get a nice set of selections, including my favorite--their deviled eggs. And pretty soon, the serve-yourself creemee machines will be up and running for the season. Did I mention their specials? Including the annual lobster boil? Oh, and they were the first gas station in the Valley to offer ethanol-free gas. Plus, they give back a percentage of gas sales to a local charity each month. The VG is truly a gem!
