My daughter participated in a Girl Scout program that Eastern Ways hosted and facilitated. To say that the staff was amazing, professional, and kind is a dramatic understatement. The atmosphere was amazing with positivity and empowerment radiating from the staff. The girls all had an life changing experience gaining awareness of safe choices to make and how to respond in unsafe circumstances. Eastern Ways is a kung fu school that has been around for a long time. While there are plenty of options for those interested in karate or TKD, there are very limited kung fu offerings on this side of Sacramento. Despite lack of competition, Eastern Ways is a stellar option. It is also helpful that they have a close affiliation with Plum Blossom association. Let's start with the good part. First, the instructors are great. Not only they know their stuff, they also know how to teach it, which can be a rarity in martial arts. Second, there is a very well defined curriculum. Each student's progress is tracked individually and there is a very well defined course of study. Third, there are plenty of options - Choy Li Fut kung fu is a very diverse style in itself, but the school also teaches Tai Chi Quan, Push Hands, Grappling, and there are dedicated classes for sparring and cardio. The kids program seems to be doing well also. And for the more artistically inclined there is also Lion Dancing. Fourth, the study program and students' progress are built on private lessons. You regularly work with instructors one on one and they provide excellent feed back. Fifth, there are several pricing options, depending on the number of classes that you attend each week. This place is not the cheapest one out there, but there is a lot of value that you get for what you pay here. Make sure you understand the different levels of programs and decide on the right pricing plan for what you are trying to accomplish. The nice part is that they do not charge testing fees. Sixth, this style of kung fu has a very large variety of weapons that you can study as you progress through learning. Seventh, what I found VERY useful is that they have several locations and you can attend group classes in different locations. With our busy schedule this is a great feature to have. Now, this is Chinese kung fu, which is heavily based on learning various forms, which is different from a lot of other types of martial arts, where forms are less numerous and not as elaborate. So, if you are taking on the study of kung fu, resign yourself to learning forms until you are blue in your face. If hardcore sparring is what you are looking for, this is not the art for you. Make sure you understand what your goals are in studying martial arts and pick the right art. Now, on to the not so good things. Several reviewers voiced the troubles that they have had with contracts. This is a very common problem with martial arts schools (just like it is with gyms). There is plenty of information on the web about dojo contracts. Research before you sign anything for the long term and understand what your options are. As with any contract, if it is not in writing, it does not exist. Once you sign a contract, it can be very difficult to get out. I am not sure why Eastern Ways does contracts - it seems to have created a lot of bad rap for everyone who uses the contract system. Finally, a somewhat concerning issue for a newcomer is that there does not seem to be a lot of higher level students in the regular classes. There are advanced classes, but it would still be helpful to have more variety in the student body. So, in my opinion this is a very good school that has a very good approach to teaching kung fu. It is reasonably and competitively priced. And so far the contracts seem to be the only part where they are missing the mark. read more

In all honesty, we choose this place based on a little research and a lot of what was convenience. Proximity to work and home. We could not be happier with the level of professionalism and enthusiasm we found at Eastern Ways. A friend from the other side of town had recommended Kung-fu as a martial arts style that he thought my girls would enjoy. He is into Akiedo. Sifu Lindech(?) was very welcoming and we had a great trial period. We have two daughters and the eldest took to it right away. Our youngest (5 @ the time) was a little restless and didn't have the joy right away. While he was willing to enroll her, he recommended that we wait and see if she developed a desire to request it herself. 10 months later, after seeing what a great time her sister was having, she was ready. The weekly one on one instruction is great and the kids develop a strong bond with the their instructor. The group lessons seem to be a lot of fun and all the students are very nice and welcoming. I don't know enough about the martial arts to critique the quality of this form versus another, but both my 11 year old and 7 year old can kick with real power. They spare twice a week and do a grappling class on Saturday. We do a lot to promote our kids self confidence, and it seems to have really blossomed while they have been here. Could not recommend more highly. If you are looking for a place for your youngsters to learn martial arts, this is an excellent choice. read more

After several years of study at Eastern Ways, my wife and I are both very comfortable with martial arts. My wife recently received her Black Sash in Kung Fu and has become a fomidable opponent in any situation. The disciple required at this school is not easy, but if practiced, pays off ten fold. When I see reviews about no contact at this school, someone is very confused. You will get all the contact you ask for. As I have learned, go in peace, but be prepared. I have been part of the Eastern Ways family since October 2014, and I am proud of it. Of the four branches they have in the Greater Sacramento area, I have attended both the Elk Grove school and the Fair Oaks school. Each instructor is professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and the teachings are consistent from instructor to instructor. They tailor your private lesson to you to focus on the areas where you are struggling, and teach the respect and discipline so that you get an undiminished view of the Choy Li Fut system as a whole. There is no pressure here to rush you from one belt to another just to take money from you like some schools do; they encourage you to work at your own pace and have been receptive to my needs and goals as a student. The instructors are genuinely passionate about the traditions they teach, and you can see it in the way they conduct their lessons. The variety of classes range from Choy Li Fut Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Lion Dancing, Dragon Dancing, and Yoga to grappling, sparring, cardio, and conditioning. I signed my 5-year-old daughter up to start classes next week, as she loves the lion dance performances. This is a great family school, as they have something to offer people of most age ranges and all levels of skill. read more

I did the intro membership for $99- classes were decent and Sifu made learning the basics of kung fu enjoyable. However, this place charges HUGE fees for classes afterwards. I nearly passed out then when they told me it was over $200+ a month for one private lesson and 3 group classes per week. Other schools charge way less and no long term expensive contracts. Sorry but this place is too expensive for most people. I love martial arts but cannot spend that much for a couple weekly classes. I know a few other local kung fu schools that offer the same level of training and traditional instruction for way less money. read more

I have a cousin who attended the Elk Grove location a few years ago. I can honestly say that Eastern Ways Martial Art is a great place to learn self defense, Kung Fu and the true meaning of kicking ass! The instructors are the best!! I enjoyed watching their group classes because the students are learning so much, having fun and I see passion from all the instructors. Other places are out to make money and students are only dollar signs to them, but not Eastern Ways!! They take time and truly make the effort to teach each and every one. I have been training in Martial Arts over a few years now and have learned a few different styles. I can say from my experience that this is a very good school, and the teachers are great. I have been attending this particular studio for over a year now and love it. The forms you learn start simple for the foundation and increase in difficulty, and complexity as the learner progresses through the ranks. Its a great work out for body and great focus for mind and memory. For those that want a real application there are sparring and grappling options available.
