New Orleans Approved!…read more As New Orleanians and self-proclaimed foodies, my wife and I have pretty discerning palates when it comes to seafood. While visiting Little Rock, the technician who was doing my wife's pedicure recommended her brother's restaurant, The Oyster Bar. We already had reservations elsewhere, but after looking at The Oyster Bar's menu, we canceled our original plans--and we're glad we did. Food (10/10) Hush Puppies (10/10): Quite possibly the best hush puppies I've ever had. Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, with jalapeños that added just the right amount of heat without overpowering the flavor. Crab Claws (10/10): Outstanding. They reminded me of a favorite dish from Copeland's back home in New Orleans--hot, buttery, flavorful and served in a generous portion. Seafood Combo (10/10): Fried Oysters (10/10): Perfectly fried with a crisp exterior and a creamy interior. Well seasoned and absolutely delicious. Cheese Grits (9/10): Rich, creamy and cheesy. We paired them with the shrimp scampi and essentially created our own version of shrimp and grits. Shrimp Scampi (8/10): The shrimp were plump, juicy and cooked well, though I would've enjoyed a bit more seasoning. Crab Cake (10/10): The standout of the meal. This crab cake was towering, packed with what seemed like 99% crab meat and full of flavor. The seafood combo is a great value. Chocolate Cheesecake (9/10): Smooth, creamy and chocolatey. Cheesecake isn't usually our first dessert choice, but we're chocolate lovers, and this one definitely delivered. Piña Colada Mocktail (9/10): Sweet, smooth, refreshing and loaded with pineapple flavor. Exactly what I look for in a tropical mocktail. Service (9/10) Our server, Tallon, was friendly, attentive and genuinely hospitable. She was efficient, checked on us regularly and made sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive. It's always refreshing to have a server who doesn't disappear after the food arrives. Ambiance (8/10) The atmosphere is casual, bright and airy with a comfortable noise level that makes conversation easy. If a couple from New Orleans--where great seafood is practically a birthright--can enthusiastically recommend The Oyster Bar, that's saying something. We'd happily return the next time we're in Little Rock.

The fried okra appeared to be whole baby okra. I have never had it prepared that way and found it to be very pleasing to the palate. The mustard greens were equally delicious. The service was slightly disappointing, which led to a four star rather than five star rating from me. The restroom is on one corner of the restaurant. Unfortunately, we were seated in the farthest corner from that restroom. It's a fairly large building with multiple rooms. Going forward, I will ask to be seated closer to the restroom. My mother has dementia and the distance to the restroom made things a little difficult for us. It might be also be difficult with small children.

This time around I asked the girl at the counter what her favorite dish was and she said, "shrimp kabobs." I was sold. SO GLAD I LISTENED!!!! These are THE most flavorful kabobs I've ever had, and they are accompanied by some of the best rice and beans I've ever had. I was fully expecting beans and rice Mexican-style since the place is owned-operated by mi gente, but it was a more Cajun-style brand and rice. These beans and rice are so damn good. I just can't. These kabobs are perfectly seasoned with fresh lemons, tomatoes, onions, and zucchini. It's is CLEAR they make these to order, so when you get it expect a wait...that will be well worth it. Yeah, I take back my last review. You don't come to a place like this in central Arkansas and order oysters. That was dumb. This, however, is the best decision I've made this trip. Hands down.

Funny, but right next door is a place that bills itself as great Cajun/Creole food, but the menu here easily showed itself as a great, if not better, option. We just stopped in for drinks, which they have an abundance of specialty cocktails that appear to change frequently on the blackboard, and really enjoyed them. So we wound up chatting with the friendly barkeep about the menu. He encouraged us to try the crab dip, and oh my, we are so glad he did! It is a very rich appetizer, but absolutely one of the best we've ever had. We are sorry that we had other commitments the evening we swung by, because as we saw other diners meals arriving, we knew we were missing something special. Next time for sure!!!

The shrimp and grits definitely lived up to its hype! I ordered the half order of shrimp and grits, the grits were perfectly made and also came with six of the most juiciest shrimps. The only thing that I would change about this dish is to either make it slightly cheaper, because it was pretty pricey for the small amount of food that you get, or there should be a little bit more grits. Other than that, the meal was great. The waitress that I had was very attentive and professional, she helped me with everything that I needed and was timely when it came to placing the order and serving food. The restaurant is in an easily located place with complimentary parking right across the street.

Unfortunately, my experience was EXTREMELY subpar. There were only THREE menu items available and were extremely overpriced for the ingredients used as well as the quality and portion size. I only had $20 in cash on me, because by the way, they're mostly cash only, so the only thing I could order was the " hood noodles". That honestly should've been my red flag right there, but I wanted to support a local black business. Not only was the owner or the food truck manager, extremely RUDE and DISMISSIVE to concerns I had about my order accuracy (at the time of ordering), but the wait time was 25 minutes for some REHEATED Ramen noodles, jar Alfredo sauce, overcooked shrimp WITH the shell on, and OVERLY salted and seasoned food. I'm someone who loves flavor, but that plate was walking hypertension. Also, eggs were supposed to come with my order, and there was none in sight. The most edible thing on the plate was the sausage and that was after all the excess seasoning was washed off. I'm not one to trash small businesses, but even the presentation of the truck was underwhelming and concerning. Handwritten and torn up menu signs and NOT the cleanliest either. I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND this food truck, or the actual restaurant business in Little Rock to anyone. Even though the owner specializes in "hood meals ", I don't think quality has to suffer. My friend and I who came to try the business out, ended up throwing our entire plate away and wasted $20.
