Let me start by saying that EatWith may be a rather unconventional experience for me - and perhaps for some of the people that were in the room - but I was so impressed that I just had to give some Yelp props. So here we go... Two weeks ago was my first shot with host Emillio Mesa (#TheArtofHospitality). The five star review should speak for itself, and before I start about the dinner, you may be asking, "What is EatWith?" A little socializing, a lot of food. Reminiscent of "sub-culture" dining, but way more intimate, friendly and authentic. If you're up to try a new dining experience, then you should check this out. You go onto the EatWith site and find a dining experience that looks appealing. Each chef has his or her own page with a menu, pricing and dining dates on full display. If you're like me and are wary of strangers, there's nothing to worry; each chef has already been vetted by the folks at EatWith. That means that they've passed a very rigorous test. The dinner brings together a fresh new group of folks that you may or may not know, all of whom are into food (or why would they be there, right?). If you're kinda shy (like me), it's also a cool way to socialize with new people without the awkward pressure you find when you're out. OK - back to Emillio's experience. Sublime. Fabulous. Borderline professional. We started out with a dreamy signature cocktail as guests flowed into the living room. By the time the cocktail / social hour was over, we ended up with 8 (as I recall). Then he served empanadas and guess what - he even made a vegetarian special for lil' ol' me - WHAT?!! By the time they disappeared, dinner was served. And whaddya know - presentation was on FLEEK! Place cards and all. A special salad appetizer started things off followed by an entree of sticky rice and eggplant (And yes, another vegetarian spinoff for me. I couldn't be grateful enough). To top it all off, Emillio served a most fabulous sweet something that was the perfect way to cap off the evening. Oh, and did I mention there was plenty of wine to go around? Now that's the way to break the ice. All in all, I will say that I started on the timid side, but by the time I walked away, all I could think was "I'll totally do this again!" Eatwith is a truly wonderful concept for foodies without plans to come get together at a large table and meet and mingle with new people from all over. I had the privilege of getting to dine with them back last year as a representative contacted me through Yelp to see if i would like to give then a try. You can read that full review on the EatWith site, but the entire experience was amazing. We had a seafood dinner prepared in the home of one of the chefs, Don, where everything on the menu was local and sustainable. This guy had mad knowledge about everything having to do with fish and seafood in general. We enjoyed 4-5 courses, including several courses and beverages with his lovely gf Ellie acting as our server. I brought my husband along who truly enjoyed it and although, we did not know anyone there, there was no awkwardness as the host as well as guests were very friendly and eager to learn about the other person. As someone who grew up in SF, a lot has definitely changed regarding how we communicate and meet people, however, EatWith, seems like a good alternative to force you out of your comfort zone and regular crew to wine and dine with people you wouldn't normally, be comfortable approaching or engaging in conversation with otherwise. I wouldn't mind doing this again and feel that everyone should give this new "private" dinner party concept a go at least once or whenever you find yourself having to dine alone! ;) read more

EatWith is a great way for people to enjoy a delicious, unpretentious meal in a communal setting. It's perfect for social butterflies and even introverts like me. I feel communal dining encourages people to strike up conversations with people they may have otherwise never spoken with. I had the pleasure of attending a dinner in the EatWith test kitchen. What a view! I loved being able to see AT&T Park right from the dinner table. The dinner was prepared by 4 different chefs. I loved hearing their stories about how they got into cooking and what made them fall in love with food. Their love was evident in the presentation and taste of each dish. I left the dinner full and satisfied, and will always have memories of such a great dining experience. Now I'm eager to plan a dinner for a special occasion. I think it's great that you can book the entire table...I'm definitely going to take advantage of that. The problem now is deciding which of their tantalizing menus to choose. = p read more

We had the worst experience with EatWith. The host did not disclose their "secret" address. Instead the host guide us to a corner street where 5 guys ambushed to pocket picking our phones. After lost one of our phones, we contact the host with three different local landline phones, and NO RESPONSE. I then left message to the host on the Eatwith app to ask the address, again, NO RESPONSE, after 2 months later, still NO RESPONSE. As far as we concern, the host does not exist, and this is a scam. The EatWith team responded by email and offered $40 credit, ignoring the fact that we have never heard back from the host nor were informed the actual address, which is THE reason we missed the dinner. We did not take the credit. It is insulting and irresponsible. Never again will use Eatwith. Do not recommend!!!! read more

It seems all reviewers so far are merely promoting themselves. I have a very different experience, and started at the very beginning, with their website! I went through the registering process and when it came to adding the required three sets of pictures--you hosting, the venue, the dishes--the third set wouldn't go through, no matter how many times I tried. They also have something called "Throw an Open Table," no explanations. When I asked what it was, they answered "well exactly, I don't know what that stands for. Where did you get this expression? On our web page? I will ask the community manager for the British market, and I'll come back to you with an answer!" And she works in their "office"! Check out the website for a calendar of upcoming events/meals, register and pay for it online, and wait for a confirmation email. Simple as that. You can read reviews of others' experiences and read bios on hosts to help make your choice. I joined in on the Sake Supper hosted by Rebecca, Michel, and Yoshi. A delectable, restaurant-quality (if not better) 6-course dinner with sake pairing. This team of hosts work like a well-oiled machine, all experts in their own right, yet incredibly humble and eager to share their passion. I find that EatWith meals might best cater to the singles crowd, looking to meet new people (not necessarily in a romantic way), new transplants looking to network and learn about local culture, or anyone simply interested in connecting with others via food, an experience that restaurants don't provide (if you happen to be alone). Perhaps even schedule an intimate private dinner party. I'm looking forward to my next EatWith meal, you will too. read more

I've just had my very first EatWith experience and it certainly won't be my last! Let me start off with what is EatWith-- it's basically a dinner party hosted at the chef's home. You could go on their website to preview all the chefs and their menus. Each chef sets their own maximum number of diners and unless you have a big group signed up, you'll likely dine at the same table with a group of strangers. I'm going to be honest, when Mr. Dubs arrived at the house, we were a little unsure about what we're walking into. However, by the end of the night, we were both extremely satisfied.It's something completely different for us, but familiar at the same time. It just felt like a dinner party at a friend's home. Being a seafood lover, I chose to dine with Don for his San Francisco Treats dinner. I couldn't be any happier with the decision! We had oysters, crab, pasta, clam chowder and more oysters! Just thinking about it is making me hungry. We also had the opportunity to chat with Don for a bit after our meal and I was impressed with his knowledge and passion. This was my first time hosting a pop-up dinner event with EatWith and was lucky enough to work with Lauren for my husband's surprise birthday. All I had to do was reserve a date/time, number of guests, indicate what type of food to prepare and was given a few chefs to choose from. When we arrived at Laila's house, it felt like we were invited to a good friend's house. The ambience was warm and convivial. I love the fact that Laila assigned seats for everyone. It creates a way to break the ice and talk to new people. Her food is absolutely delectable and unique. The portions are generous and so tasty. Laila ended the night with the traditional Moroccan tea and cookies which we very much appreciate it. I found EatWith through my search for Casa Flores when yelping for food options in Pac Heights...I quickly realized that it wasn't a restaurant, but an invitation only pop-up dinner experience and I was very intrigued. My husband and I added it to our SF Foodie Bucket List. Two months later I was scouring the internet trying to plan the perfect 30th birthday surprise for my husband and I found the private parties offering on EatWith. I connected with Vanessa, who hosts private parties through them and I reached out to see if we could book. Vanessa responded within 24 hours and we began the planning process. Our experience ended up being beyond what we could have ever imagined. The space is absolutely incredible. I was able to come early that day to drop off wine and decorate for the dinner. The staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. Vanessa tailored the meal to some of my hubby's favorite foods and created a night that all 18 of us will not soon forget! From the delicious 4 course meal, the incredible EatWith space overlooking AT&T Ballpark, and the welcoming, professional, and extremely talented Vanessa and Julian, my husband had the best birthday that he could have ever asked for. My one experience with EatWith was a complete disappointment. I signed up for a dinner in Tel Aviv a few weeks before it for a few friends and myself. I immediately received an email stating that it had to be confirmed with the host. I received an email a day later confirming it, with the address and a phone number. The day before the event I received an email as well as a text message reminding me about the dinner. My friends and I showed up to the dinner and pressed the buzzer many times. We called the host's phone number and sent numerous messages before they finally picked up. When they did, they were surprised to hear that we were at their apartment, as they had no dinner planned for that evening. I don't know if this is the fault of the host or EatWith (I have to believe the host would have received the same amount of reminder emails and texts that I did) but when EatWith refunded my money, I lost on the exchange because credit cards buy and sell foreign currencies at different rates. Not a huge amount of money, but annoying that I am being penalized monetarily for something that is not my fault. Total disappointment on all fronts. read more

We reserved and paid for a "Taco Crawl with a Food Critic" in Mexico City. Our guide was scheduled to be Benjamin. One hour and 20 minutes before our scheduled meeting, he texts me to say rain is expected, so wants to reschedule the Taco Crawl until the next day. Since we were flying home the next day, rescheduling was not possible. So he cancels our scheduled Taco Crawl! And not a drop of rain fell that evening! Seemed suspicious to us. Her dishes were on par and the ingredients seasonal, so you know that you are eating something tasty and super fresh. I pretty much cleaned up my plate for each course she provided. Laila and her partner Mark are the perfect hosts -hospitable and effervescent -and they really know how to make strangers dining together feel connected. By the time we descended to their apartment for the main meal, I was as excited to continue the dialogue with my new connections as I was to taste the food. The the food was superb. Tasty, ample size portions and prepared with skill and the most important ingrdient - love. Her love for wanting to share her culture, love for creating community, love for cooking. I had a terrible experience with EatWith - Tried booking a private event with Chef Jonnatan and was really disappointed by his and the booking manager complete lack of accountability and responsiveness to a booking that was confirmed by me on email and I was waiting on them to send over the contract - invites and 25 guests all confirmed for the event when 4 days before the event they tell me the space was double booked and I will have to look elsewhere - I'd never work with this company again. read more

"Eatwith helped create a most unique and memorable event for my hubby's 50th birthday celebration. Right from the day I contacted Eatwith Leela worked diligently and tirelessly answering every query of mine with a smile. We were incredibly lucky to be paired with Chef Jonnatan - he created a Spanish inspired menu of tapas and paella with a decadent chocolate dessert. He helped with suggestions for pairings of wines. His team of Sia and Jordano were great with the decor setup - very classy and tastefully done and attentive to a large loud group. The speaker system was well set up in advance and Chef had Spanish tunes streaming creating a very cozy ambiance. The welcome white Sangria was refreshing and perfect to kick off the evening. Chef is a very personable and responsive to his guests. The food was superb, well presented for family style eating with generous portions. We had several courses of cheese platters, croquettas, patatas bravas, lamb meatballs, valencia paella and chocolate cake! The location for SF is gorgeous with stunning views of the ATT park.
