Move along, at least for me there is nothing to rave about here. We decided to order some appetizer/small eats out of curiosity. We normally eat at the GREAT Chinese stir fry joint next door. Chive pancakes mushy and too oily, radish cakes had no flavor, pork and cabbage buns were okay but rather bland. Maybe it was an off night, maybe they've had better days, but what I had did not compell me to want to come back... I called ahead, waited the amount of time given to me on the phone, arrived to see one old dude slowly serving the three customers in house and have now been waiting an additional 45 minutes. This poorly run, understaffed junk hole cannot possibly make food good enough to overcome the service issues. I'll probably never know, I'll be walking out the door and making a PB&J for dinner in 15 minutes. .... UPDATE 75 minutes after the time that they said my food would be ready, I walked out. If they were planning on serving me the takeout container that I saw on the table with no temperature regulation for an hour, I wouldn't have eaten it anyway. Went to cartlandia, fed my family at what should have been bed time for the kids, and had a MUCH better experience than I had at this place. I've only lived in Portland for about 3 years. In that time I have visited very many restaurants with a high focus on Asian cuisine. I've been to Han Oak, Kennys Noodles, tried pok pok and several dozen other places. Don't get me wrong, most of the places had excellent food. But EC Kitchen stood out the most. The dining room is a no fuss no frill environment. But the food is outstanding. We ordered 3 appetizers and a main dish for two people to share and we were stuffed. Everything down to the sauces they used was delicious. We ordered the tofu appetizer, beef roll and shrimp cakes. We also had the chicken and black mushroom dish. The food was plentiful and the wait (yes it was a long wait for the food) was worth it. I would recommend this to anyone interested in something different but familiar (in a good way) read more

We had the Taiwanese braised pork clay pot, the sweet and sour pork chop clay pot and the beef roll. The meal came out within 10 minutes. The food looked nice but the flavor was disappointing. The braised pork was tender but tasted of salt and that was it. The pork chop was tender but had no flavor other than the sauce which was kind of flavorless too. The beef roll was okay. Though this place is real close to my house, I hadn't been here, in large part coz my go to restaurant, Chinese Delicacy (hand made noodles & dumplings) is right next door. The place used to be a house and still looks it. EC's signature is Chinese sausages, which they make there. They are also known for Taiwan style dishes. Went with the sausage on rice. seemed to take a long time, though only one other customer in the place. I wished more Portlanders would frequent this establishment. This is probably the most authentic tasting Taiwanese/Chinese in Portland. They make Chinese and Taiwanese sausages in house and when looking at their ingredients without a lot of the nitrates and fillers that commercial sausages use. I love that they don't overly season their food and let the quality of the sausage shine. Their fried rice is generous and cheap and is made to order. The fried rice has what the Chinese call Wok Hei... Which is loosely translated as dragons breath from the strong btu output of their kitchen... Something home kitchens can't recreate. They create a lot of their dishes and ingredients in house and how they serve it at such low prices baffles me given how low the volume they regularly get. The quality is even evident in their chili oil that is made in house which is among the better chili oils in town. The space is always immaculately clean and the service is friendly very attentive. The owner speaks several languages and is very fluent in English. The problems with some of the dishes are a reflection of an ambitious menu for this size of restaurant and their low volume. A lot of the menu is house made but the turnover may not be strong enough to keep certain things fresh enough. If you are well versed in Chinese comfort food from elsewhere in the west coast you're in good hands here.... However if your definition of Chinese food revolves around panda express or fried proteins with name your own sweet sauces then this may not be the place for you. Get their Chinese sausage fried rice and try a few nibbles off their appetizer menu. Soy milk is also made in house and quite tasty. read more

I really like this place--and this is coming from someone who is from Houston, the mecca of cheap and delicious Chinese food. Food: As another reviewer mentioned, get the specialty here: house made sausages and braised meat. The sausage is very meaty tasting, without the hard and fatty chunks that most store bought sausages do. Combination plate ($7.99) includes two meats of your choice, jasmine rice, bok choy, and a small dish of pickled veggies. The beef noodle soup is also good--the beef shank is ridiculously tender and the broth is rich with a natural sweetness from napa cabbage inside. Not a fan of the braised pork rice (卤肉饭) because the cut of meat was leaner than normal, making the dish rather dry and less flavorful than it usually is. I love how everything here tasted home made and less oily than most typical Chinese restaurants. My only complaint is that some of the meats were quite salty. Service: Very friendly and helpful!! It was strange that they advertise as a Taiwanese place but the main staff that day was Cantonese...oh well. Environment: Cute yellow house from the outside, bright and clean on the inside. I used to live in Taipei so I was really excited to check out EC Kitchen and it didn't disappoint. I recommend going with a couple of friends and order all the small plates - they're awesome. The turnip cakes, wings, shrimp cakes, tofu are a few standouts but really you can't go wrong - it's all superb. Desserts are interesting and tasty too! Finally went to this new restaurant tonight after reading the review in Willamette Week. I drive by them everyday but it's hard to try new places on 82nd... I just don't expect much. Well, I'm glad we tried them!! First, the service was amazing. I walked in and ordered the special noodles with chinese sausage for take out. While I was waiting the nice lady behind the counter told me about each and every one of their meats that they make themselves and sell in a cold case. She even INSISTED that I try a sample of the Taiwanese sausage before I left. It was delicious. And my food when I got home? Amazing. We shared the one dish between 2 of us and it was plenty. First of all, I would say to not even bother coming here unless you're a pork fan. The star of the show here is the chinese sausage (especially the Chinese sausage pot rice). I'm delighted that there's a place that specializes in sausages. Most of the dishes are steamed and have a great, light flavor. If you're looking for heavy American-Chinese dishes that are drowned in sauce, then this isn't for you. To me, this is like comfort food - the kind of lovingly prepared dishes that my Taiwanese grandparents would make. I tried the tea egg (great and for quite a bargain too, especially compared to most tea houses), Taiwanese hot tea (amazing), fresh hot soy milk (also delightful), Chinese pot rice (very good), the chicken/mushroom/sausage (pretty good but not as good as the pot rice), the vegetable sides, and finished everything off with hot sweet tofu in ginger sauce (which was made fresh that morning). The sausage is what they're known for, so that is a must get dish. The Taiwanese beef noodle soup with tomatoes can feed a family of 4!! With noodles, bok choi, and tender beef chunks, it is my number on choice when I come here! The radish cakes are a great appetizer! You can also buy them Togo and you can fry the, up at home! This is the only place in Portland that I can eat authentic Taiwanese beef noodle. The soup is so delicious that I would finish it all. This place is clean and bright, and the people are so friendly. Bubble tea is different than what we get at other places but I really like it. The tea is Chinese green tea and I think it tastes like oolong tea. Chinese sausage is really like those we used to eat in Hong Kong. They have expanded the menu and added new items since they first opened. Recently I have tried the deep fried pork chop, it's good and I wish they have it as appetizer. Not bad, not bad at all. I visited this little join during my house hunting trip to Portland. As a Taiwanese, I was looking for decent Taiwanese food prior to our move. I was not disappointed. While it's not your Taiwanese street market presentation, the flavor was good and the portion was big. I ordered turnip cake and Taiwanese braised pork rice..... but I think I actually gotten beef shank rice instead. Disregarding the error, I enjoyed the meal. The turnip cake was delicious, and the beef shank was done just how I would've make myself. Hopefully the braised pork rice next time will be as good!! read more

Really really horrible service and food. First we got seated in the bard with the excuse that a family is going to move to the 4 man table. However 5 minutes later a single person came and was seated there. My grandparents had to sit in a bar chair! Then, we had to wait for almost an hour and half for our food to came out, when confronted, they barely explain anything! There was no server at all!! Heck, the only server is the child of the owner. The food also tasted bad, my popcorn chicken is soggy and tasted like its being fried in used oil. Fried rice is barely spiced. Worse, my braised pork rice is never recorded! The food rates a solid 3. Fairly authentic taiwanese sausage, the sweet ones are on the sweet side, and the spicy is only alright. The turnip cake could use more turnip. The chive cake was a bit over-fried and tough on the outside. We came on a Saturday afternoon, and it was clear that they were not ready for the amount of people there--meaning, all 4 tables of customers. One table came later than us and got all their food before us.. Maybe they had called ahead, I don't know. But it really really irritated me, especially given then my wait for my food. In any case, the other 3 people in my party all got their food in a slow, halting pace. And we finished all their food and my entree wasn't even ready yet--in all, over an hour from the time we ordered. And no, I ordered something straight off the menu--the noodles with Chinese sausage. I'm not so sure what took so long. And she didn't even apologize or update us on what was taking so long! No apologies until we were paying our bill, AFTER I had asked for a to go box before my food even came out. So I took my food home to eat. You're good to go once you get that this place has a specialty, you should just stick to the specialty. That specialty is...sausage and braised meats. They make it in house and it has essentially three varieties, a classic Chinese pork sausage which is sweet and tastes of rice wine, a Taiwanese sausage which should be pan grilled and a spicy variant of the Taiwanese sausage. I've been here a lot and tried almost everything on the menu. It's just not that great except for the sausage related food. A close second is the braised beef and the braised pork. (these are very different from each other BTW) the bubble tea in original flavor is nice and has a strong spice on it, if you like chai, you should try it. So Order steamed pork bun or the steam sausage bun 2 sides of Taiwan sausage (try both) bbq pork the braised pork meal the beef noodles (if you have company to share). sticky rice if you still need more i'd hold off on the other entrees like their stir fry meat/veggie, or the chowmein until you've tried the house specialty. read more

I wanted homey, warm and comforting. I got all of that by finding EC Kitchen by accident...and I'm not even Taiwanese. What really brought me here was my gf giving me the option between EC and some other place that I can't be bothered to remember. What sold me on EC was the picture of the turnip cake on the menu. I love turnip cake. Growing up with a dim sum chef dad, has made me a dim sum enthusiast. Turnip cake is one of my favorites, so I knew I had to come in. The exterior and lack of people inside made me question if I would like it but I was so hungry at that point, it didn't even matter. I saw the beef wrap and knew I wanted that too...but I didn't want to look like a fatty in front of my gf. However, she knows me too well because she was stuck between two things and the beef wrap was one of them. You don't need to question what we got as a second appetizer. AND then I saw the pork and rice on the menu, I was sold. My older sister makes a mean Taiwanese pork and rice that she learned from her in laws and man oh man, do I love it. I had to give it a shot. The turnip cake was greasy but delicious. It was more soft than crispy which isn't bad but it's not my preferred way to eat it. The beef wrap was so good, crispy scallion pancake wrapping, hot flavorful beef. My only qualm is that the pancake was kind of greasy too but there's nothing you can do about that. The rice was pretty good. The portion was huge. The bok choy had a few fruit flies in the stem, those suckers are hard to get out unless you scrub, scrub, scrub. I love this family-run place. It's very small, very friendly, and friends who have been to Hong Kong tell me that the food is authentic. It's certainly delicious! I want to tell you that you should load up on the appetizers, but then I remember how much I like the main dishes. Sooooo much great sausage. Skip the chicken - it's pretty much the only bland dish on the menu - and concentrate on other choices. Go with friends who are willing to eat family-style, so you can try a bunch of things. The vegetarian options on the menu here are limited. I've been meaning to check out EC kitchen for awhile now, the first attempt, their establishment got broken into, and they were closed for a little while. I normally don't go South of 82nd, unless I am heading towards Clackamas mall, or somewhere else in the area. As I walked in, I was greeted by the family and they were very sweet. I was offered a table, that had just finished up, and they attempted to clean it, but I was ordering food to go. We ordered the beef roll, steamed pork bun and the sausage/mushroom/chicken plate. They were all delicious. I probably had three meals from the chicken plate. Their Taiwanese sausage is worth coming back for. It's freshly made in house, and worth picking up. The chicken plate is very mellow in flavor. I always ask for the chili oil, to doctor it up a little. I'll have to try their noodle soup, but for now get the sausage. I had to give it a star because it requires you do at least one. I agreed to go eat here at my boyfriends behest. I was leery because I'd heard they had meat hanging in the windows. Well it wasn't in the windows but there was hanging meat. As soon as we opened the door my senses were assaulted with a smell that should not be anywhere around food. It was foul and rotten. I love EC Kitched!! Just went there for the first time and the staff was very nice and accommodating for my gluten allergy. The fact that they could tell me what was and wasn't gluten free right on the spot was amazing in and of itself! I ended up getting the shrimp fried rice (highly reccomend) and it was amazing.
