I usually cut my own hair but on this day I just didn't feel like it. Googled cheap haircuts near me and this place came up. Reviews were good so I decided to walk there. Super hot outside but whatever for $10 I was willing to do it plus I was able to get my daily walk in. I went on a Wed about 11am it was one in the chair and one guy waiting. It's a super small place so I waited outside. After about 20 mins of waiting the guy that was in the chair came out to leave and proceeded to tell me Cecilla said she can't do my hair because she doesn't cut my type of hair. I was shocked. I went inside and asked her. Sure enough she said she can't do it because she's never cut my type before. I'm assuming she means BLACK HAIR! Trying not to get pissed. I told her my hair is cut just like you're cutting everyone else's hair. Same clippers, razors whatever she uses. She just shook her head and kept saying she can't do it. I literally rock a BUZZ CUT, no parts, no designs or anything so I'm trying to understand what the problem was. Anyhoo I left pissed off because not only did I walk up in the heat but I waited outside for 20 mins before finding out she wasn't going to cut my hair. She could have told me when I first walked up and peeped inside, or at anytime while I stood outside waiting. Had I not gone in to confirm what the guy told me she was going to start on the other customers(the one waiting when I arrived) hair and not say anything. I guess leaving me outside another 20 mins. I've been going to Cecilia about once a week for the past year now. I like to keep my sides clean so I go weekly. She does a great job, and she's super nice. She had been charging $10 for years, which is insanely cheap for LA. She recently started charging $15, and it's STILL AN INSANELY CHEAP PRICE. These days LA barbers act like they got their degree at Harvard and you gotta make an appointment with 2 months advance notice, personal references, and then they have the audacity to charge $50 because they throw in some cheap wine and beer. Please. But with Cecilia you can just show up, maybe wait 10-15 minutes if she has a customer waiting, and get a great haircut for $15. Highly recommend! read more

HIDDEN GEM!!! Price can't be beat - only $10! Walk-ins only, so you may have to wait in line - although I went on a Thursday afternoon & walked right in. There is literally only 1 chair, so it feels like a private experience. Cecilia is lovely, highly skilled, and very Covid conscious (she wore a mask the whole time and let me know she is vaccinated). I don't do anything fancy with my hair, but I let her know the kind of cut I wanted and showed her a photo and she did an excellent job. I was in and out in 15 minutes! What is ironic is the lengths hipsters will go to to recreate what they imagine a real barber shop might have been like in the 1930s, only to charge $35 for a men's haircut that is sloppy and devoid of any real craftsmanship--and people pay for it! Echo barber has one chair (as most old school barbers did) and a second generation barber who was trained by her father. Her father was trained as old school barbers used to be trained: the apprentice method. A barber in Chihuahua promised to take him on if he would first work as a shoeshine boy. I learned all this while the barber gave me skillful 8 dollar haircut. You read that right: 8 bucks. A remarkable feat in the age of the 4 dollar coffee, to be sure. Not to mention a complimentary straight razor shave on your neck and Mexican Coke to quench your thirst. It should be noted too that in 1935 the price of a haircut was 36¢. With inflation that would be $6 today. read more

The place is poorly decorated. It's very cramped and cluttered. The radio plays some station in spanish that's between stations and makes static when the clippers are running. All this is funny and has nothing to do with the haircut. All Juan's tools are regularly sterilized, cleaned and organized. The razor's always super sharp. The hair cut will take a while as he carefully eliminates every stray. I'm not a fan of long hair cuts but he is not slow, he's just detailed. The time is well worth it. He speaks English and Spanish and is quiet and nice. You'll get exactly what you want. I have to mention I walked by another barbershop on the way there and the way home. The guys that were in the chairs when I first passed were still in the chairs the second time. I was going to go to American Barbershop for 25-plus dollars, they seem real nice. But I didn't wanna get fussed over, and spend a lot of time and energy. Instead went around the corner to this little unassuming joint with one barber chair and some "waiting" chairs aligning the walls. The space is tiny, the lady worked super deft and quick, chargingTEN bux. I was in such a hurry, I have to tell you I was delighted to be in, wait five, and back out in ten minutes. About as no nonsense, straight forward, old world barber experience you can get. The place is small, one chair so one customer at a time. He's an elderly spanish man, very pleasant, quiet and knows his stuff. He doesn't say too much unless you can speak spanish. Took his time and all I was getting was a standard hair cut. Very meticulous, isn't rushed at all so unless you have the time, don't expect this guy to hurry. The place is sort of a mess but in a nice way. My normal go to spot for a haircut. She runs a one man shop so often there is a wait. Also, if she is sick or away then obviously the shop will be closed. I have come a few times on Saturdays where the shop was closed for the day. Shes quick and skilled and the room is surrounded in mirrors so you can see what shes doing at all times pretty much. She has given me great advice on shampoo choices and also instructions on how to better care for my hair in the shower. Her prices are great and pretty much can't be beaten. read more
