Echo Lake Meats - Oscar. - Meat Shops Near Me - Soldotna, Alaska

Shrink-wrapped meat: it's what's for dinner. During our recent trip to Alaska, I was dragged to Echo Lake Superior Meats by my husband's Alaskan aunt and uncle because it is the Home of The World Famous Jalapeno Cheese Spread and because we were in the throes of a meat emergency. Apparently, dinner (which was being cooked by the Alaskans) required something called "Reindeer Sticks," and as any Kenai-area native knows, for Reindeer Sticks you go to Echo Lake. Echo Lake is straight-forward and no-frills, which I imagine is exactly what one seeks in a superior meat shop (since I'm not allowed in the kitchen unless someone needs another martini, it would be a stretch to consider myself skilled in meat-seeking-missions). White floors, white walls, clean white cases full of (you guessed it) meats, smoked local fish, and spreads of all flavors and sizes. While we browsed the meat aisles, the friendly staff brought out some fresh cajun smoked salmon and asked if we'd like to try some. Yes! Delicious! That night, in addition to the meat sticks, the family devoured not one but two tubs of Jalapeno Cheese Spread, which is kind of disgusting in retrospect. Man, that stuff is addictive! (It would be perfect for pre-Thanksgiving meal snacking around the fireplace or TV set, depending on how your family rolls). The reindeer sticks were, of course, delectable, with nary a leftover in sight. While at first glance the meats seem a bit pricey compared to the crap they serve us down here on the mainland, this place offers truly top-notch foodstuffs. I am eager to test out their online ordering system for specialty sausages, gourmet deli treats, smoked alaskan fish, gift boxes, and fresh seafood. This is a fairly priced meat and seafood store. They have great service and a wide selection of food. The service was very polite and helpful. The dips are a must try. They are phenomenal! The wide selection of meat is great for all ages. If you do not like seafood that is fine because they have meat. This includes elk, bacon, pork, beef, chicken, etc. They even had prepared kabobs. read more

Good selection of smoked meats, some very nice beef and pork items, butt tenders were $20 per lb. A little high but they looked great. The Landjager and sausages were very tasty and we will return for more and maybe some of their beef shortribs. I would also try some of their famous dips also. After many trips to Alaska and no problems at all getting meat home, we came here. I'm not sure what the issue was, but somewhere between a lack of organization and unsatisfactory customer service, they failed to ship our meat after one week. After going back in to the store to see why it hadn't shipped, we were informed the meat would go out first this this week. Now another week has gone by and the meat still hasn't shipped. With all the great reviews and the service I've received every different place I've been in AK this was truly upsetting. I'm hoping this is an isolated incident, but I wouldn't gamble with my vacation here. read more

Did Echo Lake Lockers change owners/management while I was out of the area during the last two years? I have purchased my meat there since I came to Alaska in the late 70s. I didn't mind paying a little more because of their superior quality and have always been happy. However, I have been quite disappointed since I came back to the area. Once my packaged hamburger had "packed in Australia" stamped on it. That was okay but I thought it was weird coming all the way across the pond because I thought they were a local store. Previously they wrapped their hamburger/meat in plastic wrap and then butcher paper. The last two times I purchased hamburger there, it came wrapped in butcher paper and then wrapped again in butcher paper. Well, the butcher paper is not waxed so the meat sticks to the butcher paper and it gets even worse when I thaw it in the microwave. I lose up to 25% of the burger stuck to the paper! To make matters worse, the burger is absolutely tasteless. I believe I may have purchased my last beef/hamburger there. The place is more like Echo Lake Inferior Meats. read more

What an amazing find in Soldotna! Huge variety of meats - I took home some elk, buffalo, veal, sausages and bacon! And of course a container of their infamous jalapeno cheese dip. One of the best aspects is that 90% of the products are already vacuum packed, which is perfect if you're just visiting. The staff was really helpful and packed up our meats for shipping with cold packs. They also offer online ordering for some of their offerings if you forget anything. read more

All I can say is wow... I have had some BAD customer service before, but I don't think I can EVER say that I have spent $175 and had bad service! I ordered $175 in smoked salmon, a smoked turkey, cheese spread, and salmon spread... I paid for 2 day shipping, of which my order did not arrive until the 3rd day. Ok... When I opened the box, EVERYTHING was at room temperature! They placed 1 tiny 3x3 gel pack into the box for all that food! Here's where I REALLY take an issue... I called and explained this to the lady, whose reply was "well, that 's what happens with 2-day shipping". She also said that they typically don't put gel packs in the box, but "he must have done that because it was 2-day shipping"... For her response to be over and over again that it is typical of 2-day shipping and that I should have chose overnight shipping left me beyond words! There is no disclaimer on their site that says buyer beware, 2-day shipping could result in receiving spoiled meats, otherwise I would have NEVER just wasted so much money! I will NEVER recommend Echo Lake Lockers to ANYONE, especially after have dealt with such AWFUL customer service! Having grown up in Alaska, in the same town as this place, I bragged about it to everyone... Now I will HIGHLY recommend that they NEVER give this company their money or service!!! I hope everyone who reads this review takes heed and thinks twice before dealing with all that ridiculousness!!! read more

Warning! We brought 150# of fresh caught halibut to be vac packed and frozen for shipment to AZ. It was not frozen solid SOFT AND FLEXABLE!!! When I asked someone what could be done to prepare it for shipment a young man ran up behind me, ripped the receipt out of my hand and yelled "You are not getting a full refund!!!" I tried to explain I did not ask for a refund but he kept yelling. We had to pay a different processor to flash freeze the fish and pay double! I wonder how many people do not check before shipping the box. I wonder if people are getting Food poisoning from the thawed fish. I will never do business here again! read more
