Sketchy. My friends and I went there at around 5. We were staying at the hotel. I heard the lady next to us ask our waiter to see the happy hour menu. He was like, "oh I don't know..." and she replied that the night before, the waitress gave her one. And it WAS happy hour. Till 5:30. It was like he didn't want her to order from the happy hour menu. His reply was, "Okay, let me check." It took awhile for us to get our drinks. They were fine, but when we got our checks, there was an extra $18 charge, $9 each for the beer flights in addition to the $18 they cost. I asked what the extra charges were for. He said it was just marked that way, that if we added them up, the total was right. My friends and I did add all of the drinks up, and there was still the extra charge. He came back, and said, "Oh, yes, there are extra charges. Let me fix that." He may have seen us with our calculator out. In any case, he had them removed. I don't know what he was trying to get away with, but it didn't work. Did he think that because we had drinks, we weren't paying attention? I don't know, but it was all very suspicious, like he was just trying to get us to pay an extra $9 for each beer flight. Yeah, right, $27 for a beer flight?! You're out of your mind. Over-priced drinks, judgmental wait staff, and charging you for items they told you were out of stock equals a not great experience. This is partially my fault because I was with a group and didn't confirm all charges before I paid. But it shouldn't have been charged to us in the first place, so there's that. First, they refuse to split a check - even 2 ways, even asking to pay at the bar, if you sit with a group, you HAVE to be on one check. This isn't the wait staff's fault, but it is quite inconvenient. One person ordered a Blue Moon, she came back and told us they were out and the person ordered another beer. No problem. Until I was looking at the check later and noticed the Blue Moon on the receipt - along with the other beer (and the blue moon was more expensive!). What the actual hell. Overcharge for a drink we never got - a drink that was more expensive - but still got charged for the replacement drink, too. Also, the waiter was very unaccommodating and extremely rude. I made a reservation ahead of time and yes, some of my group was late, but the majority was there, in their seat, within 15 minutes of the reservation time. And they weren't very busy with empty tables all over the area we were. But she made it very clear how unaccommodating WE were, being a party of 8 (and yes, all of my party did eventually show up). This is fine to go to for A drink - one - once. To see the cool interior. But I won't go back. It's not that great, cocktails were minimum $15, food was...fine. But there are many better bars in the city, and way more restaurants with much better staff who don't charge you for items they're out of and be rude to your group throughout. I understand waiting tables is not easy especially when you are probably understaffed, but I didn't do that to you and we were a good group. read more

Stayed at the Hyatt for a night and wanted to catch the football game and we got lucky this bar was inside our hotel. Plenty of tv screens, nice and comfortable chairs. We got truffle fries which were amazingggg with the sauce they serve with it. The pretzel bites and cheese fondue was my favorite...perfect to pair with a nice cold beer, which they have plenty of at the bar. Also every day is happy hour from 3-5:30. Our service was excellent and I will definitely keep this place in mind for future visits. read more

I was staying at this hotel for a conference and at one lunch and one dinner at Eclipse Kitchen and Bar. I sat at the bar both times. I was greeted promptly and felt attended to throughout my meals. I made some friends during dinner while watching some Thursday night football games that were also hotel guests. The quality of the food was fantastic. I had a burger for one meal and fish tacos for another and was satisfied and would recommend both. The food was good portions and came out in a timely manner. I mean, you expect it to take some time, and that's fine, but I also went at smart dining times when the kitchen probably wasn't too busy. They had a good variety of drinks and even let me sample a few specials they were trying for an event. I appreciated the free test beverage and friendly servers. There are a million places to go and eat nearby but I wouldn't could this place out. It's got a great staff, great food selection and cozy atmosphere for being in a hotel lobby. read more

Service was outright terrible. Asked the bar tender if they were doing table service and was told yes. Two tables sat 5 minutes after us and we were the third table addressed by the waiter. When he finally took our order, he stopped and took the order for a table of 6 on the way back. He was 10 feet from the service counter to submit our drinks before taking theirs. We got there before them but because he waited, our drinks were delayed until after their items. BS! He came back 30 minutes after delivering our drinks to ask if we wanted anything and at that point, we wanted the check. Again, third party given our check. Needless to say, he got a $0.25 tip so he knew we left something but nothing else. Horrible. Horrible. Horrible experience. read more

Meh. Pretty cool scene for a hotel bar. I thought this bar used to be in another location of the hotel - but during the remodel, I guess it moved? Good selection of beers on tap. A rotating happy hour food menu. That's good. The only thing I wish was that service might've been a little faster. I understand pacing between courses, but between order, first drink, checking in, things were pretty spaced out. Yes, it was mildly busy... but customer service? Booths are pretty fun. That's probably what drew us there. Not the cheapest in town. $19 something for a beer and Jack & coke. But not highway robbery either. read more

No joke, in conjunction with the Hyatt Regency's "Alcatraz: Life on the Rock" exhibit, Eclipse is serving an updated interpretation of the prison's menu from now until October. http://bit.ly/18N5OUT Did you know that Alcatraz actually prided itself on serving inmates relatively healthy/tasty food from locally sourced ingredients? If that's not farm-to-table, don't know what is! Old menus were examined and re-created on tin trays to commemorate the occasion... We're talking comfort food at its best too: Stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, meatloaf, roasted zucchini squash, spaghetti (for Al Capone, of course!), short ribs and mac 'n' cheese! This lucky lady right here didn't have to break any laws or don an orange jumpsuit to try the food, either! Nope, I was simply invited to attend a special unveiling. Intriguing, yes? Obviously it's a novelty menu, paying homage to a life that likely none of us ever experienced (or will have to). Even if you got sent "up the river" these days, your meals would likely be serviced by Aramark or whatever large food service company was lucky enough to land a government contract. From what we were told, prisoners at Alcatraz helped prepare the food and were allowed to go back for seconds, assuming they finished everything on the tray. When you've wiped that plate clean, go explore the lobby atrium! There's a replica jail cell, complete with bars on the wall. Makes for an excellent profile pic. And no, you cannot sleep in here at a discounted price (apparently there have been some inquiries at the hotel proper). The Eclipse Restaurant at the Hyatt Regency is good to keep in mind for the right occasion. I met a good friend here because she swears by it for lunch. I understand why, as I had a deliciously well-prepared piece of grilled salmon on a bed of mixed greens and lentils. At $19, it's a business meal price, and not just a place to head from the office for a bite. For business meals, this is a pretty and quiet space. The open atrium provides a bit of atmosphere and the tables are well spaced, allowing for easy conversation. The service was timely and pleasant. Lunch pricing: The starters are $8 - $15 Lunch salads are $14 - $18 Sandwiches and fish tacos $15 - $16 Entrees are $14 - $19 If you want some of the same experience, but care to dine elsewhere, the adjacent Eclipse Lounge is decent place to have a drink. Not a destination, but a hotel-convenient spot for a drink. Wines start at $9. The Franciscan chardonnay is a good choice. I like the Estancia pinot noir as well. read more

After wandering on the Embarcadero to soak in the gorgeous views of the bay (and the frigidly cold weather), my friends and I found ourselves in search of alcohol to warm our bodies. Unfortunately, casual bar options are apparently slim by the Ferry Building at 10:00 on a Friday night, so we opted for the Hyatt's hotel bar out of convenience. Maybe next time, we'll search a little harder. After grabbing a table, I ordered a Diamond Gin and Tonic for my first round. Now, if you know what makes it "diamond", please feel free to let me know. Other than running for $12, I'm not too sure what sets it apart from a regular sort of gin and tonic - it was pretty average. After that, we just switched to beer for our second/last round to keep it light (didn't pay for that one, so not sure how much those cost). Feeling a little hungry, we also decided to order a snack to split for the table. I'm not sure if this was the exact name, but we ended up ordering the Olde English Club Sandwich (turkey, bacon, fried egg, lettuce, and tomato) that came with a side of seasoned fries. The sandwich was actually pretty decent compared to most I've had (I credit the fried egg), but I think the fries were the winner. It's hard not to like crispy french fries (especially with a drink in hand), but it's harder to say that it was worth it when it was $15. Service is pretty mediocre - they got the job done, but could certainly be better...and faster. Once we were ready to go, it took quite some time for our check to be brought to us, and just as long for them to bring back the tab for the slip to be signed. Despite about a half dozen staff members just kind of hanging out at the bar together, it seems like no one was able to help our table table except for our specific waitress, who would disappear from time to time. Talk about inefficient. Situated in the lobby of the Hyatt, the relaxed ambiance and attractive decor are the only redeeming qualities. Considering options are a little light in the financial district area at night, it's not terrible if you're a tourist or in the area, but certainly not a place to go out of the way for. I find it extraordinarily insulting and upsetting when restaurants with a captured audience (IE in a hotel) feel that they do not have to try because of that. See my review for Bacchus Wine Bar for a similar experience. We decided to head to the Eclipse restaurant because it was convenient and we were in need of a Bloody Mary, stat. We were seated quickly and our drink orders were taken in about five minutes of seating. Our water glasses were removed and we had to ask for water to be returned. After our drinks came we then sat for another ten minutes watching about 5 waiters wander around clearing tables, offering juice, and generally ignoring us. We had our menus turned upside down to indicate (shouldn't have had to this) that we were ready to order and still were ignored. Our waitress finally appeared from the back and took our order. I was already ticked off from the wait. I think part of the confusion can be associated with the breakfast buffet as many of the people in the restaurant seemed to take advantage of that (looked super tasty but too pricy for my taste since I wanted a cocktail), yet you would think even in that case when servers have less to do they would be more attentive. I got the corned beef hash with a 'spicy Bloody Mary sauce' and poached eggs (I asked for medium on the eggs). My husband got the two eggs (over easy) with bacon and toast. When our food came out my eggs were decidedly not medium and his were almost cooked through. The sauce with my hash was basically hugely chunked tomatoes from a can and no spice at all. I asked for ketchup. My hash was greasy (although it is corned beef...). Husbands bacon was perfectly crisp and thick and his sourdough toast was cold. Overall we had a mediocre experience. They did comp two of our bloody Mary's for our patience which I appreciated, but would have preferred good service in the first place. This effort did bump them from two stars to three (my husband suspects they saw me taking pictures of the food). I am coming down more and more on ALWAYS venturing out of hotels when getting food, because clearly they don't seem to care. read more

Surprisingly good food in this hotel restaurant/bar, and reasonably priced considering the quality. The butter lettuce salad and mushrooms with polenta were both delightful as an afternoon snack. Happy hour goes from 4:30-6:30 and includes $5 wells as well as a rotating $4 beer. If you're staying at the Hyatt and are hungry, try this place out. Late night the staff gets a bit less impressive. Our waitress double billed us for a drink, and misrepresented what was actually in a drink. When the menu says strawberry purée without the word FRESH it means they're using that craptastic daiquiri mix. Don't order it! She did correct the 'error' on the bill, but it took a while. read more

We had recently stayed at Hyatt at Embarcadero to Celebrate our 11th Wedding Anniversary. The 1st stop in our Adventure was the Happy Hour at the Eclipse Bar in the Atrium of the Hyatt. They had plenty of seating and a couple of Booths. I ordered a Mojito and started off with Chips and Salsa, and the Pita Chips Hummus for the Happy Hour price of $4.00. The drink was about $10 which is not on the Menu. Wifey had a Corona which was more reasonable at the price of $3. The Server was Friendly and the drink was okay, but definitely not strong. We also ordered Hot Wings and they were really good. I liked that the sauces Bleu Cheese and Wing Sauce were served on the side. The place was busy for a Friday but the Server was quick and efficient. I will remember to stop by for a quick drink if we are ever in the neighborhood again. read more

I took my friend here for lunch. Yes it's in the foyer area of the Hyatt and you can easily miss it if you weren't looking. Restaurant is quiet so you can actually have a decent conversation here without shouting. Service was attentive. We didn't have to wave anyone down whenever we needed anything. I ordered the angus burger - medium well and garlic fries. The burger was cooked to perfection - not burnt and certainly not bloody red. Garlic fries were yummy. For dessert I had the blueberry parfait. That contained candied pecans, custard, bits of lemon bundt cake. Very yummy. This is a nice place to take someone to lunch to. read more

I was here for holiday drinks with Boyfriend and a couple of our coworkers after our staff holiday party. This lounge/restaurant is located in the Hyatt Regency hotel lobby and, since it was the holidays, the millions of twinkly string lights had the place glowing softly. It was absolutely beautiful (this is one of my favorite places to see during the holiday season because of those lights). I had ordered their alcoholic apple cider (also a holiday staple and I believe only part of their holiday menu). It's a warm drink in a cute, fluted mug with a cinnamon stick floating around inside and liberally splashed with whiskey. It was amazing. The warm drink was just what I needed to keep me toasty from the winter chill outside. My coworkers (Boyfriend, too!) thought that the drink was sweet, but not overly so because the whiskey cut the cider just right. And with the floating cinnamon stick adding just that right touch of holiday spice kick, I was enjoying myself immensely. My only complaint would be the price -- it was pretty much $10 to get this cocktail (though compared to most San Francisco touristy prices, I guess it really isn't THAT bad). We seated ourselves at one of those weird booth-table things with the raised bar chair/stools for seating. Sadly, every single one of our chairs were too high for the table height (since we were at the part that dipped shorter in the middle), but we just sat back a bit and enjoyed ourselves. Staff never insisted that we take a menu or seemed to want to hurry us along after we had finished our round of drinks and were just relaxing and chatting. They simply left us be after we turned down food and we were able to sit down, relax and just chitchat at our leisure without any disapproving servers staring at us in order to silently hurry us along. I would come back for more drinks (alas, if only they had the holiday drink menu available all year long...)! read more

One of my staples when visiting San Fran and staying at the Hyatt is the Eclipse Restaurant. I'm always partial to the Chicken Tortilla soup and the sweet potato fries but I also like to mix it up a bit. I've had most of the menu items, and I can say that I enjoyed them all. From salads, to burgers, chicken and steak. The service is always very friendly and I recently spoke to one of the managers who is a big fan of craft beer which I was happy to hear. I hope to have an even bigger variety of beers to choose from during my next visit! read more

The service is great, the food is great, and the atmosphere is great. I like what they've done with the place, having frequented the Hyatt for its food and drink for the past ten years. I am hesitant to praise any further because of how much they've hiked the prices since revamping the bar and lounge areas. One might argue, reasonably I might add, that it serves the sleeker environment to charge more for what they've got. However, I have never once paid $6 for a cup of black coffee -- not anywhere, not ever. Not New York, LA, country clubs, outer space -- you get my point. $17+ cocktails are pricey but not unforeseen in San Francisco. $19 breakfast items are not unheard of at exceptional hotels. But a $6 cup of coffee? Come on. That's absurd, and we're knowingly suckers paying for it. My patronage here has obviously receded over the years, and nowadays it's close to nothing. Over time I had gotten well acquainted with the staff, and they're why I would continue coming back. The people make the place. But these prices have been hiked to a point that dining here is too exclusive. Whomever conceived $6 coffees should surely think so. In summary, I am saddened. I will return, someday, of course. Just need to swing by the bank first to take out a loan. read more

A solid 3.5 stars for happy hour at Eclipse Kitchen & Bar. Located inside the Hyatt Regency at Embarcadero, Eclipse certainly has the potential to be a popular spot for happy hours for local Fidi workers as well as hotel guests and tourists. The lobby level has been renovated with modern, posh decor and an inviting ambiance. Eclipse is located on this level and you cannot miss it. The bar stands out as the main visual attraction, surrounded by different unique seating arrangements for any sized party. They have community tables in the back, intimate booth seating on the sides with private overhangs, open lounge seating as well as tables for two with comfy sofa seats fit for a queen. If any of those do not suit you, there is ample space at the bar. Friend and I met up for happy hour shortly after 5pm on a weekday. We choose to sit at one of the intimate booths with plenty of table space for us to order several dishes. Our servers were friendly and quickly came to greet us and take drink orders. The menu has a good selection of appetizers, salads, burger/sandwiches, entrees, bar snacks and desserts - enough variety but not overwhelming. Their cocktail menu is unique and there is also a good wine list. Although the happy hour menu isn't extensive, their appetizers which are not listed on special pricing are still reasonably priced, especially comparing to other downtown SF happy hour menus. They also have charcuterie and cheese plates, which are always a hit for happy hour especially with wine pairings. We ordered several dishes, among those were definitely more hits than misses. Every dish had nice presentation and portions were sufficient for sharing. - Shoestring Truffle Fries ($8): I love shoestring fries and these did not disappoint. The portion was a huge heaping serving. They were perfectly fried without being greasy or soggy. There was enough truffle flavor but we could have used a little more. - Potstickers ($12): 5 chicken and veggie potstickers came abed a sweet/savory soy sauce. They were cooked just right with a crispy exterior. Flavor and texture were on point. - Classic Ensenda Fish Tacos ($18): The portion came with two decently sized tacos and sides of sour cream and chili. The battered fish pieces were ample and had a mild spicy kick. I thought the slaw wasn't as fresh as it could have been as the cabbage was a bit wilted, making it a little stringy and difficult to eat. Nice touch with the slice of avo on top. - Giant Baked Meatball ($14): I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it was made with lamb meat, so had to try. The meatball was indeed giant, accompanied with two grilled pieces of garlicy sourdough. A spicy tomato sauce accompanied the meatball for added flavor. Conceptually a wonderful dish, but the meatball itself was just way to salty for our palettes. - Cocktails ($15 each): I tried the Castro (virgin) and friend had the Mission. Cute concept of having cocktails named after different neighborhoods in SF. I thought the drink was well balanced even though I had a nonalcoholic one. However, lacking was the presentation. They were served in regular glasses (the same we had for our waters) without any type of garnishes. I'd expect a little more pizazz for a $15 drink. I also noticed that the happy hour times at Eclipse were 3:00-5:30pm. I'd suggest having a later window for happy hour to draw in more foot traffic. With so many bars/restaurants in FiDi, there has to be something enticing to get the patrons to come by. It would be nice to have more happy hour drink specials as well. Overall, a pleasant experience at Eclipse. I wouldn't mind going back to try a few other dishes and dessert. The ambiance is welcoming and comfortable. Compared to a bar, you don't have to yell over other conversations and loud music. By the time we left around 7pm, there was a good amount of people who came for an after work drink and bite to eat. Most of the seating was occupied as was the bar area. Not the rowdy, young crowd but more catering to a sophisticated and mature clientele. The location is right above the Embarcadero Bart/Muni station so it is very convenient for those taking public transportation. read more

After flying in from the East Coast and wandering around SF getting the tourist out of my system for a couple hours, I was pretty tired and ready for dinner. I'd had a big lunch so I just wanted something simple and small. I ended up going to the Eclipse Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency in the Embarcadero area of SF. I decided on eating here because they had soups, salads, and "small plates." The restaurant's menu had lots of good options, and I appreciated how the restaurant used local, organic, and sustainable ingredients. I got the "small plate" of crab cakes, which were some of the best crab cakes I've ever had. They had a nice, crispy crust and great texture between the outside and inside. The 2 sauces, a creamy one and balsamic one, served with the dish were very tasty - I ate both of them right up with the crab cakes since the flavors went well together. I also really liked the side dish of sweet corn and jicama - it was very refreshing and I found the whole meal to be simply delicious. For dessert, I had the Ferry Building Farmer's Market Seasonal Fruit Cobbler with Streusal Topping. The seasonal fruit filling was made of apples and cherries and the dish was topped with ice cream. The plate was HUGE AND was quite tasty. I only ate about 1/2 of it because it was so big. The restaurant was pretty quite as I went in pretty late around 9pm. There were a few random business people scattered about but the place was pretty quiet and I liked the relaxing low-lit space. The atrium is pretty neat looking with lots of plants along the interior balconies and funky-looking elevators. The waitress was very nice and took good care of me. She was very friendly and could see that I wanted to have a slow, relaxing meal and gave me plenty of space. She also got all my food to me promptly so I was comfortable but not waiting on her. A man in a suit, presumably the manager, even stopped by to check in on how I was doing. My meal was slow, steady, and relaxing and made the perfect end to a long, busy day. Patio dining under the stars. Sort of. Except the patio was the 3rd-floor lobby of the Hyatt Regency, and the stars were track lights hung high overhead in the 18-story atrium. About 8 stories up, the hallways and rooms hung directly overhead. The spaciousness was accented by a skylight way up over the 18th floor. Flowers and trees in the cafe helped create the outdoor illusion. The flowers were real, the trees were fake. For a moment I was transported to the Blue Bayou in Disneyland. A HOT Russian girl had invited me to meet her here. Quiet groups of businesspeople gathered around the tables. Suits and ties were all that we saw in this half-filled, little-known haven. It was clearly an expense-account rendezvous. She had tea and a Caesar salad with crab cakes. I discovered the new menu section of "signature trios," and ordered the Caesar, two crab cake sliders, and french fries, with a diet Coke. The HOT Russian girl paid the bill, $51 plus tip. Two paid-for lunches in two weeks! I'm on a roll here! read more

We had a Bad experience at the Eclipse The food is okay , the customer service is horrible . The servers have an attitude like they don't want to be their . One server dropped a plate of food and it almost got on one of us and then we had to listen to her arguing with someone on who should have to clean it up. Then when we got up and left our server (young short Hispanic girl with 2 pony tails) chased us down and asked us why we gave her a small tip ( which we didn't) and then she rolled her eyes and gave a bitch looking stare, even if you get a small tip how do you have the heart or the nerves to call someone out on that , maybe they can't afford to give a big tip and they gave all they can afford. The manager is a good guy, he was working harder than his workers where, it's a shame he is stuck with these low lifes read more

A nice lunch time treat for a friend and I. The angus burger and garlic fries for her, kobe sliders, clam chowder and a small salad for me. Mine was part of a lunch special - select an entree and two sides. Everything was delicious. Could stop myself from eating my friends garlic fries. Friendly service. Even the manager checked in on us a couple of times. My favorite time to come to this restaurant is during Christmas when the hotel really takes advantage of the open space - filling it with lights and beautiful decorations. read more

The best hotel breakfast I've had. ($23.95) Really good quality. Scrambled eggs are perfectly cooked, delicious corned beef hush, bacon is good, nice and light ricotta pancakes with real maple syrup, fruits are fresh and sweet. Varieties of cold cuts and cheeses. Outstanding service. read more

A group of us decided to come for a happy hour after work, and were sorely disappointed by the lack of service. Despite our group being the only customers when we sat down, our drinks took at least 20 minutes to arrive, and the wait time on the appetizers wasn't any better. Nobody came in to check on us after we got our food and drinks, and we had to flag down a waiter to ask for water, which took yet another 10-15 minutes to arrive. Drinks and food were decent for a hotel restaurant/bar, but the quality of the service left a bad taste. read more

This place is a definite eye candy that allures you in with its beauty...only to largely disappoint with very mediocre food and service. I ordered the "Kobe Sliders" which comes with a side of fries for $15. The plate came with 2 sliders. The bun was nice, buttery and soft, but what should have been the highlight (the meat!) was no where near as tender as "kobe" SHOULD be. The fries were decent; nicely crispped and salted and they give you a whole lot served up in a decorative "newspaper" coned cup. But, the dipping sauce greatly confused me: sweet chili-esque sauce es no bueno! Did more damage than anything. The service was average; efficient, but lacking personality and attentiveness unless called upon. The only memorable part of this place besides the streaming twinkling lights above is the freshly cut nicely crusted bread: they cut it out on the main dining floor (so you can tell its fresh) served with a sun dried tomato tapenade spread drizzled with olive oil. This is complimentary...upon request. All in all, if you're a guest at the Hyatt here, you will DEFINITELY find better venturing outside of the hotel. read more

I was with family for new years eve in this hotel. We decided to have donner since most of the restaurants outside are closed. Ambiance is cool. But what I dont understnd is, the service was way too slow. We were ushered in our tables but took 30mins for another waiter to ask for our orders. It wasnt jampacked that night, customers were minimal but servers were about 9 or 10 to a small size bar. When order was taken, it took another 30mins to serve the foods and another 30minutes to serve glass of water. We spent 3 hours in the restaurant waiting for our order and finished our meal for 30 minutes. Way too expensive and foods are overrated. read more

Most hotel lobbies are only good for checking in. The lobby of the Hyatt Regency San Francisco is worth checking out. We came in to see the magnificent lobby, but stayed to enjoy a beverage in the Eclipse lounge and ride in the retro glass elevators. Our jaws dropped as we stepped into the 7 million cubic foot atrium lobby, considered by the Guinness Book as the world's largest. On the lobby floor, Charles Perry's 40-foot tall anodized aluminum sculpture entitled "Eclipse" hovers over a square-sided fountain, where thin sheets of water flow over its vanishing edges. Overhead, a cascade of over 300,000 white lights rain down from above. Fortunately, our visit coincided with the 4:30 to 6:30 daily happy hour in the Eclipse lounge, where my domestic lager only set me back $4. After a long day of sight-seeing, we appreciated the posh couches and soft sleek chairs, spaced far enough apart so that our conversations could remain low-volume and private. For a little high anxiety after happy hour, we rode the iconic glass elevators to the top of the atrium. We rose smoothly at 500 feet per minute in the illuminated capsules trimmed in polished brass. Although the ride was free, it is not recommended for the acrophobic. The Hyatt Regency deserves three stars for its record-setting and awe-inspiring atrium lobby, comfortable lounge and daily happy hour specials, and exciting elevator rides. The festive Christmas decorations during the holidays warrant a fourth star, and are another reason this hotel lobby is worth checking out. read more

Be prepared for some of the worst service in San Francisco - unfriendly, slow, inattentive and dictatorial. The servers go to great lengths to say that they are too busy to make out individual checks. What they don't tell you is that an 18% service charge is added to every party of 8 or more. I organized a happy hour event there. I asked the manager if we could have individual checks because people arrive and leave at different times. He said he would ask the server if they could provide four checks as a compromise. They put everything on one bill anyway. One person forgot to pay for both of their drinks, so the rest of us had to make up the difference. The server initially questioned why we were taking a long table because she claimed there were only four people the last time. I pointed out that there had been eight and she said that she meant only four people had ordered. One of them had asked if they could just get a drink at the bar to pay separately and was told "If you order at the bar, then you sit at the bar." No wonder more people didn't want to order something. Once our "busy" server had eight people on the check and a guaranteed 18% service charge she stopped taking orders for newcomers to our table and never asked anyone if they wanted another drink. She had time to bring a plate of appetizers over, and then come back to say "that's not for you" and carry if off to another room in the nearly empty dining area. One of the latecomers started wondering if they should just go to another bar to get a drink since the servers were spending most of the their time at the waitress station and not taking any orders. The overpriced food is mediocre and the beer selection is just adequate. The only positive thing about the place is that it's relatively quiet. I'd give it three stars if the wait staff didn't extract their tips from customers using the combined bill scam. If you're staying at the Hyatt, it's convenient, but there are better places in the vicinity. read more

Drinks - great! service - something to be desired..... It was a super crowded happy hours and they appeared to be way understaffed. Our server was kind enough, but she was so slow. The kind of slow where you want to order your second drink as soon as you get your first one because it will take that long to get a drink. Hot tip: It's next to their front desk which is -not- on ground level. Hot tip: The front desk was super nice and broke a twenty for me. read more
