We stayed at the hotel and ate several times at the restaurant. Breakfast was included in our room rate. We have no issues with the breakfasts. But we did see on several websites that their restaurant had two Michelin stars. Unfortunately, we did not realize that the websites were badly out of date and the chef responsible for the two stars had left four years ago. We were excited to score dinner reservations at the restaurant, but were very disappointed by the dinner experience. The dinner menu is badly overpriced and the portion sizes are very small. A small bowl of plain white rice at the restaurant is $10. In general, the food was ok. The offerings were consistent with what you would find at a plain Indian restaurant in a Bay Area strip mall. Our stay at the hotel was a good value and we may stay there again in the future. But next time, we'll be eating dinner somewhere else. read more

Was staying at the hotel that this gem is located in so decided to come and check it out. The food was amazing. Portions are a bit small but it's expected when eating a fine dining type of restaurant. I opted for the four course meal. Price was $70. I believe it was reasonably priced for everything that was include. Bread, a trio type appetizer, a second appetizer choice (I picked the crab soup), an entree (I picked the mango and coconut prawns), sorbet in between app and main course, and dessert (I picked the chocolate mouse). I stopped in for dinner on a weeknight in January. It was a random selection, I just looked at nearby restaurants as I was walking back to my hotel near Union Square from a long day of walking, museums, etc. The bistro was the perfect escape -- since I arrived around 6pm, it was fairly empty, just a few people at the bar and about 3 or 4 tables of singles/doubles. I ordered a glass of cabernet and it was wonderful, the bartender and waiter were very attentive. The room is very relaxing, this would also be a good place just to stop for a drink. I had the three cheese ravioli with brown butter and tomato compote -- delicious! They bring you a nice basket of sourdough and butter, no charge (I did partake, having done 25K steps worth of walking). Service was great, I would visit again for sure. read more

Nice little place to grab a quick bite while staying at the hotel. The food is somewhat expensive, but expected when eating at a dining establishment in a hotel. As soon as I sat down, the bartender/server came over to my table with a glass of water and a menu. He was very attentive throughout my meal. I ordered the crispy calamari. It came out in about 5 minutes and was really nice and crispy. Probably the crispiest calamari I've ever had. Almost like fresh pork rinds crispy... which is much better than getting surprised by soggy, rubbery calamari. It was served with lemon and lime wedges. Very good tartar sauce. Might be good if they offered cocktail sauce with it as well, but I prefer mine with just tartar. After eating, I ordered the crème brûlée (as I always do if it's on a menu). It was good, but there wasn't enough vanilla and it wasn't as dense as it should be, but good nonetheless. The eating area is somewhat small and the bar has room for around 8 people. The whole place could fit maybe 30 guests, but during my stay I never saw it full. Wish I had more time to try other food options, they had some good looking ones! Wish I had snapped pictures of the menu because the pictures here on Yelp are very outdated and they no longer have the same menu pictured. We are so lucky that the hotel had a chef's special menu for the night we were staying at the TAj. This was no doubt the best chicken korma and malabar parantha i ever had!!! Soooo good. The curry leaves and the tadka at the top was soul satisfying!!!!! The chef Mr. George was so humble and nice to talk to. We also had prawns for appetizer- again AMAZING! Being food lovers, eating here was the highlight of our trip! We obviously took extra malabar paranthas because they were perfectly cooked and complimented the korma so well. The food at Campton Place is an absolute delight. It's like they have a secret wand hidden in the kitchen because they know how to transcend ingredients beyond comparison. Dining here is an absolute experience for your taste pupils. I have dined here both as an omnivore and as a (recent) vegetarian and their vegetarian tasting menu can fully hold its own next to high end ingredients such as lobster and duck breast. Their tasting menus are great but I did feel I overdid it last time when optimistically going for the 6 course meal. I felt they needed to roll me out by the end of the meal. The wine pairing is always spot on. Their sommelier really knows what they're doing. The service is great, not warm and fuzzy, but very professional. They will not leave a crumb on your table (literally). Different champagnes are offered at the beginning of the evening, each with a different price level. It is overall expensive, as you can expect from a Michelin star restaurant, but fully worth it for a special occasion. One area of improvement would be a vegan dessert. Got to the room and it was fine nothing great nothing bad either. I had dinner at the restaurant and while the menu was a little outdated, the preparation was perfect. I had the NY steak that was served with fries and a salad. Great service from the bartender. In the morning I also visited the restaurant and the breakfast menu was really enticing. A nice mix of Indian and American dishes. I had the Desi omelette which was amazing! My boyfriend and I had a reservation here for our anniversary and had an amazing night! We each ordered a four course meal (they ask that your party stick to either the preset or the four course to keep the pacing the same) as well as a glass of rosé. Before I get to what we ordered, I'd like to mention that there are a lot of delicious small bites given throughout the meal (about 6-7 I believe) - with one of them actually being my favorite dish of the night! The standouts from these were the fluffy naan bagel (truly the BEST thing I ate all night - I would order an entire basket of these if possible because it is literally like eating a buttery cloud) and the palate cleanser before dessert! The other notable additions were the potato and caviar starter and the little assortment of desserts at the end. On to what we ordered: Poached Lobster (5/5): Quite a sizable appetizer, the lobster was well cooked and was heavenly with the sauce! Spice pot (4/5): A fun dish with really bold flavors! I really enjoyed this one but found it to be a bit difficult to eat in the pot since it is encouraged that you try to eat everything together and I found myself having to be extra careful not to accidentally spill any out of the pot! I also wish it was a teeeeeeensy bit larger. Cod (4/5): Perfectly cooked cod - absolutely perfect. I do however, wish it was seasoned a bit more! The little veggies on the side though were the real star of the plate, just bursting with flavor! Day boat scallop (5/5): Another fun and creative dish! The scallops were wonderfully sweet and the chutney was so flavorful! Duck breast (5/5): Let me tell you about that SUPER CRISP SKIN! You know you're in for a good time when you hear that beautiful crack as you're cutting in. Everything on this plate was phenomenal and there was a good balance between savory and sweet. Lamb (4/5): This dish comes two ways which I really liked (I'm all about the variety)! It also comes with this amazing rice - a good mixture of flavors and textures! The meat was cooked well and was tasty but it didn't stand out as much as some of the other dishes. The portion for this one is probably the most hearty though! Cheese Cremeux (5/5): Wow, they really shine here with the desserts. While the entire dish was great (not too sweet) the star is the really the sorbet on the side! Concord Grape (5/5): Between the two desserts I think this one edges the other out! It is light and refreshing, not to mention beautiful!! I loved the snow and all the mixtures of flavors and textures (those toffee-like pieces are AMAZING!!) We also received an ube dessert for our anniversary with a little candle on it which was really cute! This was mousse like and was soooooooo decadent and rich. I just wrote a review for the Taj Campton Place, which I stayed at last night. This review is for the food/restaurant. Although the restaurant proper is currently closed, you can order food at the bar and via room service. On Saturday night I debated on what to have but settled on the Chicken Curry. The presentation was awesome and the quality and flavor was outstanding. This morning I ordered the Poha via room service and what a treat it was. I'd never had Poha before and am so glad that I made the choice. I'm a fan of the food here and will look forward to going to the bar (which is awesome) and having some more food there in the future. read more

Lots of familiar spice flavors like turmeric, curry, yogurt-sauces, chutneys, etc. The creativity of the dishes is high, and you'll definitely get to experience the chef's genius. The appetizers and desserts really stood out, and service was excellent throughout. We felt the overall flavors of the dishes at Mourad last night was more to our liking, but still solid 4 stars for Campton. Campton's dishes have bold and strong flavors, due to their liberal use of spices and glazes on just about everything. My favorites from the tasting menu (aka Spice Route) were: Chef's Picnic at Golden Gate Park - wow this was an amuse bouche and not even on the menu! A mini taro-stuffed samosa, herb-coated lychee, fried squash blossom, and peach soda in a peach (similar to mango lassi) - 5 stars! Spice Pot with SF Fog - my sister loved this dish, and even uploaded a video on FB. A savory, salad like dish with crispy pani puri with tamarind and chutney. (5 stars) Cauliflower - Excellent, herby crust (5 stars) Halibut - Perfectly cooked and moist. Interesting green strawberry sauce (4 stars) Rack of Lamb - Cooked medium rare and flavorful from the outer crust. Great basmati rice side with peas and maitake mushrooms (5 stars) Desserts - All the desserts here were pretty solid and beautifully presented. The pluots were excellent for cleansing the palate but had a nice coconut sorbet. Melon dessert had that awesome Creamsicle and was a light, refreshing dessert. I've only been here for breakfast or eaten room service as a guest in their hotel. BUT the first time I was a guest I ordered an omelet from room service and it was -- hands down -- one of the BEST omelets I have ever eaten. I have breakfast once or twice a year. Yes it's expensive, but the service is impeccable, the restaurant is sedate and welcoming, and everything is well made. The English muffins are actually baked goods. House made marmalade and raspberry jam. High quality butter. The home fries are made to share. Nicely seasoned with caramelized onions. What brings me back each time is the masala omelet. It's a flat omelet with tomatoes and mild chilies and masala seasoning. A lovely Anglo-Indian dish. I've had the malted waffles when with a friend to share. And the seasonal fruit is always an interesting combo -- not just melon and an insipid strawberry like so many places. I wish they had later brunch hours. read more

I came here on a Friday night and tried their spice route menu, including: (1). Starters (not officially in the menu) included potato yogurt with caviar, foie on blini with candied kumquat, naan with ricotta and a waffle (2). The Spice Pot - chaas, tamarind chutney and cilantro. (3). Artisan Foie Gras - this is the supplement and is the highlight of this meal. Highly recommended (4). Maine lobster with cauliflower, green mango and coastal curry sauce (5). Chilled Sago with kale, buttermilk and dill (6). Black cod with green strawberry chutney, curry leaf and ghee (7). Lamb Rack with green garlic, pea composition, pickled carrots and yogurt (8). Dessert included a palate cleanser (sorbet), the brokaw kiwi with banana, litchi and macadamia and candies. The brokaw kiwi was outstanding!!! This is the only Michelin starred Indian restaurant in SF and is well deserving of that award. Service was very attentive without being too intrusive. Came here for the bistro lunch, the ambience is pretty casual, people are catching up with their friends or grabbing a bite after their shopping spree around Union Square. lots of commotion, just like the neighborhood it is located in. The bistro feels a bit cramped, the interior is also very old school, not really to my liking. Tried the Dahi Puri, a bit sweet for my taste. Ordered the fish curry, but they first sent me the chicken by mistake. The curry is very light, almost like soup, with pieces of rubbery meat floating around, not the most appetizing curry I've had. Also tried the elderberry cheesecake for dessert. I like the fact that they use housemade ice-cream. But somehow the cheesecake is too moist. Thicker version of naan. Angus beef tenderloin - the meat quality was just OK. Can be more flavorful. This is a substantial dish - order if you come with a big appetite. Skip: Charred Asparagus - the asparagus wasn't tender enough. Need better ingredient. Maitake mushroom - these are fried. Again pretty misleading description on the menu. The best best part of the meal were the endless surprises of small bites and treats that accompany your meal and aren't listed on the set menu! It was these ever present small touches that made the meal fun and constantly surprised me. My favorite of the listed dishes was probably the lobster tail and the quail. Of course the meat is the star of the plate but for me the memorable parts of them are the fantastic sauces that just elevate all of the flavors. Seriously, would likely pay the same steep prices just for the sauces :) My favorite of the non listed dishes were the fluffy naan-like everything bagel and an intriguing pear-hazelnut mini popsicle. This place still holds up after all these years. In fact, I think it keeps getting better. Campton Place is a true San Francisco institution. You can't beat the Union Square location; the East-Meets-West cuisine; the old-school cocktails; the friendly/attentive service; etc. For the past 7 years, my friends and I come here to celebrate our birthdays. And (God willing) I plan on returning here 7 years from now to toast more candles on my bday cake. I usually stick with their tried and true Grilled Spiced Chicken Sandwich served with mint yoghurt and fries. It always hits the spot! And their fries are some of the best in the city. If you're doing some holiday shopping in Union Square this year, I'd recommend visiting Campton Place for some yummy bites & beverages. read more

From the menu itself, the halibut, chaas ( presented in a small flowerpot with Puri) and the asparagus dish stood out. Our main course ( lamb and a cauliflower dish with Kal appam + stew) was good but not great. The desserts though very amazing. They had about 3 different dessert courses including an assortment of chocolates and barfi. I was very excited to be dining here and heard about the executive chef Srijith Gopinathan who has been at the Campton place since 2008, trained in well-known kitchens of Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons and more. Campton place has held 1 Michelin star since 2011 and was bumped up to 2 Michelin for the first time in 2016 and 2017 dropped a star in 2018 and back to 2 stars in 2019. On the day of my reservation, we enter the place and were promptly guided to the restaurant. Both the bar and restaurant were completely occupied, which is a great sign. My partner and I ordered the vegetarian and chefs tasting. Overall: We had a good meal on New Year's Eve for a 6-course tasting menu at $275 per person. However, there was a spark that was missing. Don't get me wrong, nothing was bad but it wasn't stellar for a 2 Michelin. Mind you the cuisine is Indian -Californian and the zing was missing for sure. The Chef made no appearance during this service, wish he had :) -Reservation process: The reservation process was easy, booked through open table, the staff was very accommodating in moving our reservation a couple of times but no one bothered to check on dietary restrictions, no email or call even on the day of the reservation, that seems a little odd. Not a beets fan but it was very well done. *Maine Lobster - Coastal essence, millet and curry leaves - This was a great dish, excellent flavors, and combination, the curry was excellent. *Slow-cooked Tau Snapper - Green Mango and Fresh Turmeric - This was a good dish, fish nicely done but not overcooked and the ingredients were complimentary *Heirloom Cauliflower: Cauliflower leaf khichadi, heats of palm and pickles - Hearts of palm was adding the crunch but didn't go well with the kichadi, it just didn't work for me. *Mushroom Risotto with truffle supplement 5gm/98 - This was okay again, no excitement. Celebrated my one year anniversary dinner here with my sweet husband after catching Cirque Du Soliels latest show. We made reservations via OpenTable and easily found free street parking. We were 15 minutes early so we had a drink at the bar. My husband of course ordered their most expensive cocktail without realizing it. It was an old fashioned made with tequila. I was excited for their house brandied cherries but they didn't put any in until we asked. The bartenders were having some sort of spat and were a little disoriented but I think at $24 a cocktail it should at least be made with the basic ingredients listed. The champagne cart is sooooo smart. I swear no one is even thinking about champagne or dessert wine until the cart rolls around and everyone is all yep! One for me! We got two glasses of champagne to start and then two more drinks after. I got the cucumber gimlet and my husband got a glass of the Malbec. They don't give you a cocktail menu so you have to ask for it. We got the spice route tasting menu at $155/pp which is an incredible deal! It lists about 6 courses but with the never ending amuse bouche party it ended up being about 15 courses! We also added the foie gras which is a MUST. One of the highlights of our meal. We just got one to share (which is plenty) and they gave me a cup of soup so I wouldn't be sitting without food in front of me and the soup was AMAZING! I am drooling as I think of all the yummy courses and the first amuse bouche of crab and caviar was to die for!!! Other highlights were the scallop dosa, naan bread, and our amazing waitress Didi. Loved her!!!! She was soooo sweet and cute. She was so amazing and we both felt like the other staff members paled in comparison to her. Make sure to come hungry. We hadn't eaten since noon and our reservation was 8:00pm and dinner didn't end until 11:30pm! No wonder why their last seating is at 8:30pm. I usually don't take leftovers at restaurants like this but we ended up leaving with three bags of leftovers because of the sheer amount of food they serve! Campton Place is an amazing one Michelin star foodie gem hidden within the Taj Campton Place hotel. The flavors were mouth-watering, the service was impeccable, and the plating was eye-popping! Five mini courses were served before the dinner service even started. The avocado ring filled with caviar on top of a bed of crab plated with yuzu sauce prepped the palate for the adventure to come. The bread service was a naan bun that melted in your mouth with brown butter goodness. Lobster with curry sauce and roasted carrot was a tender and delicious first course. The final entree course was a delightful combo of wagyu beef with black truffles, charred celery root and flowering broccoli . Before the main dessert, the pomegranate palette cleanser provided a perfect transition. The cherimoya shaped dessert had exploding flavors filled with roasted bananas and passion fruit wrapped in white chocolate. This restaurant wowed and I would certainly return again. Behind every biatch is a man who made her that way. Any woman scorned can relate and for years, this was my excuse for my man-hating ways. And then there were couples. UGH. The sight of lovey dovey couples made me want to stick two fingers down my throat. GET A FREAKIN' ROOM. But, inside I was just envious. Several months ago, Mr. NSS unexpectedly came into my life and showed me that not every guy is the same. I'm not big on celebrating birthdays because it reminds me of another year I'm getting older. He, however was adamant about doing something. So what does he do? He made a YouTube video of how we met which turned me into a Kleenex box hugging baby...at work. He doesn't care for fine dining but knowing how much of a Michelin starred restaurant snob I was, he made his first restaurant reservations ever (yes, first ever!) at Campton Place for dinner and even had flowers sent to the restaurant. It doesn't stop there. After hearing me bitching all day about how stressed I was, he surprised me at my office with a bottle of red wine and disposible wine glasses in tote before dinner. Many of you reading may be thinking, "Oh gawd, look at his beezie gloating about her BF...get to the phucking review already!!!" Ok, so here it goes... Since 2011, Campton Place (located inside the boutique Campton Hotel) has held one Michelin Star. Focusing on New American cuisine with Mediterranean influences, I noticed a bit of an Indian flair which came all together when I found out, Chef Srijith Gopinathan became the Executive Chef of Campton Place back in February. As the 20th Michelin starred restaurant on my list, I can say without a doubt that Campton Place's food and service was great but it was not spectacular and definitely not 5 Star worthy in my book. I felt something was missing in each dish to "wow" me and the atmosphere was a bit stuffy with most patrons 30-40 years our senior (not a bad thing but a bit awkward). Before traipsing about the city, my wife and I wanted to grab lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in town. The ambiance is what we love about Campton Place Restaurant. But this afternoon, the dining room was awash with activities. We were glad they seated us at a booth again. It's comfortable and more intimate. It happened to fall on the Dine About Town (DAT) week. We were informed that only DAT special menu was available. It seemed a little odd that we couldn't order dishes from the regular menu but it wasn't a big deal. We came with an open mind to try anything. The palate cleanser served during this lunch was the AAA Foam. My taste buds were happy to pick up the essence of the Apple, Arugula and Avocado. It was absolutely refreshing! It's great they haven't phased out this amuse bouche. The Sunchoke Velouté was creamy. My wife loved the Beech Mushroom aroma. I enjoyed the Winter Salad. It felt very wholesome. The goat cheese was mild but went well with the lemon dressing. My Braised Beef Short Rib was savory. The meat was tender and the flavor was infused perfectly. The black truffle potato puree was smooth indeed. I even ate the kale! Very disappointingly, the Pacific Bass was a major flop. As much as my wife hates to waste food, especially fish which she loves, she simply couldn't bring herself to continue after a few bites. The fish was tough to chew. And they didn't give enough sauce to alleviate the dryness. Overcooked fish is not pleasant in the mouth. You should not have to drown it in sauce just so it could go down easier. A wait staff asked how the entrees had turned out for us, perhaps rhetorically. We mentioned about the "fish glitch." He apologized and that's that. Onward to the dessert, the Panna Cotta was pretty looking. The subtle tanginess was quite nice, not a bad way to end this meal. It didn't seem like the kitchen was able to handle the volume that DAT had brought forth. The ambiance also took a dive as the noise level went up this afternoon. Our main waiter, Billy, was attentive and thoughtful the entire time we were there. Unfortunately, it was obvious that some of the staff needed a little more training. Things like switching our dishes by mistake, and delivering food without explaining the ensemble should not have happened at such an establishment. But Billy was able to cover for them. We didn't encounter any of these minuses in our previous visit. Based on this experience, I would make sure to only return when there aren't any special events. read more
