The cashiers at this place are the ABSOLUTE WORST when it comes to saying a simple "thank you" to customers after taking their money. During the times that I used to shop there, I never once heard "thank you" from any of their cashiers. They just took the money, or returned the change, and said absolutely nothing. They probably assume that we, as customers, are supposed to fall on our knees in gratitude for the "privilege" of shopping there. So, if you don't mind being taken for granted here, and buying merchandise that is, at best, mediocre, then continue to shop at this place. But if you prefer a store that appreciates its customers, then do what I did: shop someplace else. read more

This place has EVERYTHING. I come here often on my lunch break and I swear the workers see me so often they probably think I'm loony. The prices here are really affordable and some of the stuff is flat-out awesome. A silver mod futon frame for the cost of a regular, black one. Nice. Lots of kitchen stuff, even a cool little gadget known as "the scraper"--a sharp edged piece of plastic that scrapes off what won't come off with a paper towel or rag. I've used this thing so much! This place caters to the nearby collegiate crowd, so there are dorm room staples like alarm clocks, poster frames, blank CDs, and even bicycles! It's a miniature Target without the hassle of finding a ride to take you there. read more

Awful customer service. Staff seem to want to do anything but answer customer questions. Ended up waiting ~10-15 minutes to get any of the associates to help me buy a power tool: and when I was finally able to get someone's attention, the answers I got were so disinterested and borderline hostile that I decided to take my business elsewhere. Though quite expensive (but what isn't in the city), this hardware store is always a great bet. They have a lot of stuff for such a small location, including a large selection of furniture and random stuff you would need moving into your first apartment. They also, joy of all joys, have sternos! None of the camping stores in the area have them, and I called about 4 different places before I thought to call True Value! Everything here is overpriced. The only time you should shop here is during the Midnight Madness sales when everything is marked down big time. You should also get one of the frequent shopper cards, though you can't use them during sales. You'll often find coupons for this place printed on the back of your receipt from Shaw's. The one nice thing is that it's conveniently located, so if you need any sort of household item quickly and don't want to walk far, it's available here. read more

I find the staff here very unhelpful and even arrogant. As a guy who has built and remodeled a few houses, I do know a thing or two about hardware. The two times I have been in here and the few times my wife has been in, we found the staff to be indifferent at best. Save your money and take the T out to Everett to Home Depot - staff won't be much nicer but the selection will be better and the prices much better. I bought quite a few stuffs there over the years, because it is close to where I live. However, I have to say that I don't know where those "helpful" staffs some of the people mentioned in the comments, especially during this couple of weeks, when the store goes mad with students moving in. I just tried to find a storage box that is not plastic, the first clerk told me that they stop carrying non-plastic ones, and send me to the second one, who care even less and pointed me to the general direction of the plastic boxes. The third clerk does know they carry more than just plastic storage boxes, but the shelf only listed about 10 different boxes with different prices, without marking which one is which. So I had to find the 4th clerk to confirm, passing the first clerk on my way who could care less to even stop to ask if I need help... I guess you get the picture. To be fair, there are a lot of people milling about in the store, but the service could be better if they wanted to. I do hope they just hired temps during this period. read more

This store is pretty good in terms of selection and quality of merchandise. The only beef I have with them is their store name. The stuff they sell there are pretty high end, and very expensive. If you just moved to Boston this is the place to go! Everything you need from rugs, to kitchen and bathroom supplies, to cleaning supplies and even the little shelf supports. I'm always amazed that they have pretty much everything I seem to need. They have some good furniture pieces, most of it comes in boxes that you have to put together but it's easy enough to do. The staff seem to be all college kids that are nice and always try their best to help figure out the random problems people have. The prices are standard for what you pay for anything else in the back bay. Over all a good place to get what you need for things around the apartment. read more

This is especially disappointing as everything other than the hardware is badly overpriced. The service is good, and the best part. The best part about this place is its size. One of the larger locations that give you a wide range of choices that other location just wouldn't carry. This place always come through for me! I couldn't find red Christmas lights at any cvs in town, but came here and found them right away. Over the past couple years, I have bought shower curtains and a shower hair trap, a dustpan, poster frames, dog supplies, gardening stuff and gloves, a coat rack, a dirty-boot tray, a big outdoor thermometer, and quite a few kitchen utensils and dishes. There always seems to be 4-6 people working so I have never had trouble getting help. Great place! read more

True Value has everything! It's a great shop for those of us who live in the city and don't have cars to get to Target anytime that we want. Maybe I'm a bit biased since I worked here in college, but I've always had good experiences when I've been in here since. Whenever I need something like *right now* & it can't wait until the next Lowe's trip, I pop in here. Even though I usually know exactly what I need when I go in here, the staff is always friendly & points me to the section I need. I love this store, and go here all the time. I just went there to return a humidifier that I bought three weeks ago because it stopped working. I called before I came to see what there policy is and was told I could exchange it for store credit. When I got there the manager was called over to approve the exchange. She seemed very annoyed, gave me the exchange item then accused me of "ripping the store off". I asked her why she was treating a customer this way and she told me I had to leave. I asked to speak with the manager and she told me she was the manager and she had no boss. I asked for her name and she told me that I didn't need that information and that I need to leave or she will call security. The date was 3/7/2017 at 7:15pm. Normally, an excellent store; I'm a townie who's been dependent on it for decades, though the nuts & bolts of the operation has been reduced to half over the last few yrs. Only one REAL gripe: one month ago I bought that weensie alarm clock, mentioned above, at the cash register on a qwik-trip ... I think mad ave calls it an impulse buy while waiting in line, but I figured I'd save another trip, needing a watch at that time. Sucker bait!! The coin battery is as dead as a doornail, after just 1 month. Watch sized clock was so-o-o pretty in copper color. For 10 bux, it's gonna cost over $40 a year in just batteries. And after a month who would have the pkg & receipt? Naughty, naughty! They used to sell junk $5-$10 watches on the Common marked as "Bolivia" in 3pt type fine print, instead of Bulova. An item was marked $14.99 on shelf. I got to cashier, she rang up $16.99. When I told her the price was incorrect, I was told it doesn't matter what the price listed on the shelf is, the price in the computer is all that matters. Not only is this a very poor, underhanded business practice, it is probably illegal. Bait and Switch? How much money do they rake in by charging more than the listed price to customers who don't check their receipts I wonder, especially with all the students in this area shopping there? read more

I live around the block from this cute hardware store and try and shop there to support a local store. BUT when I went in today looking for a simple item, there were two store employees at the front counter of an otherwise empty store. They were chatting with each other and one was texting on his phone. I politely interrupted their personal conversation to ask where I could find the item, they gave me directions "down the aisle on the left to the left." I went looking for the item but couldn't find it (the instructions weren't clear to me as there are several aisles in the store), so I returned to the front counter, politely asked again where it was again. The employee that was texting (I didn't catch his name but he has brown hair) begrudgingly looked up from his text conversation to again repeat the exact same direction they had already told me (did not offer to walk down to show me where it was). I asked "can you show me where it is?" then he huffed and kindly put down his phone in the middle of his text conversation to do his job and help a customer (literally the only customer in the store) walked down the aisle to show me where it was, made a big hand gesture "Right Here." as if to implicate that I was blind for not seeing it the first time, then turned and quickly walked back to the counter to pick up his phone and continue texting. I am concerned that for a small store that markets itself on the "shop local" promotion, this store will likely rely on their employees being courteous to local customers. If I were the person responsible for hiring and training employees, I would take manners/friendliness into account in my hiring practices, and I would certainly expect employees not to text while at the front counter, and if they do text they should at least feign a willingness to put down their text conversation for a couple minutes when a customer walks in. read more

I recently moved right next door to this store on Mass Ave and at first it seemed very convenient. But it turned out to be totally overpriced with very poor service. The employees clearly have never worked in a hardware store before. As an example they recommended me a vacuum cleaner that turned out to be absolutely terrible. What's more when I came back a few months later to buy a new filter for it...they told me they didn't sell them and I'd have to find it on the internet. Like most guys, I enjoy going into hardware stores. Sometimes to not buy anything but just to look at neat things I won't buy. The bigger the store the happier I am. Last month I had moved some older dis-assembled furniture and realized some of the attachment screws had been bent in the move. I told the movers that I would go to a nearby hardware store to try to get replacements. Value Hardware was the closest store so I rushed there. I went in and did not see a wall display of screws as you would find at Home Depot or Lowe's and began to think where the closest larger full service hardware store was. I remembered there was one further down on Mass Ave but it would take another 30 minutes for the RT and the movers may have been itching to leave by then. So I asked one of the workers at TrueValue. He took the sample screw and walked to an isle and began opening drawers and checking small plastic packets of screws until he found a bag of matching screws. A good store for finding certain needs like a replacement faucet head, some plastic storage containers, or even just a simple light bulb. However, the customer service is quite horrible. Not to be bias or anything but the male workers (mostly) seems better than the (most) female workers there. They seem more enthusiastic to help you or at least this is from my experience of shopping there a few times. The female workers on the other hand (particularly the cashiers) doesn't seem to want to help you with anything at all. (At least from my past experiences.) For example, I simply asked for tape today so that I can hold some containers lids together. They did give but these two female workers started talking trash about me right in front of me as though I were stupid and wasting their time to be asking them tape. And one of those people who was talking trash about me (right in front of me) was just standing there lazing around in front of an electric heater (and even goofing around at one point). And this isn't the only occasion that I've received rude customer services either. There were numerous times in which the customer services (from their female workers mostly) seems less than enthusiastic to help at all or were plain rude. That is the only big turnoff for me. It seems to me that they need more customer service training. (Or at least more enthusiastic workers and managers.) But other than that complain I have with them, it's a good and convenient hardware store. Not to mention that the prices of their products are quite good. That's a turn on for me. read more
