Annual family Christmas trip! This year we chose Staunton. My husband and our adult children and their spouses (6 of us) were looking for a place to eat before the Christmas Carol production at the Shakespeare theater. We of course Yelped and found Edelweiss. It was a Saturday night and we were a large crowd. I was worried but we tried anyway. The parking lot was pretty full... worried more. The restaurant is not overly large, but I was pleasantly pleased to get right in. Even more excited to see a live umpaloompa band! The service was excellent! We were greeted immediately, our water pitcher was always full and adult beverages too!! Our server even anticipated the need for us to taste the black beer. We tasted it and were sold! Yummy!! We mostly ordered something different so we could share. Those that had duplicates were able to share more . The sides are served family style and refillable. So never fear of running out. So that was AWESOME. The special could have used a little more salt, but that's a personal preference and I can appreciate that. We had a wonderful experience. Good marketing by this place with all the signs from the highway, and the look of it from the outside, but the food is not authentic. The main course was ok, but the sides tasted like the came out of a can. They were all sweet. German potato salad is supposed to have a sour taste. Prices seemed a little high too. read more

Finally got to eat here after passing it many times. We weren't disappointed. I had the German sampler, which consisted of Sauerbraten and a variety of schnitzels. Wife had a paprika chicken dish. Sides included red and white cabbage and spetzel. They had a good selection of German beers as well, both on tap and bottled. We also tried a couple of their homemade deserts. I highly recommend the black forrest cake. Service was friendly and attentive. My only complaint is that we were seated near an indoor AC unit that was dripping water into a bucket on the floor. We unfortunately missed the live music but we definitely plan to return. read more

Took a short trip to visit German restaurant for lunch. It is a rustic dining room with nondescript furniture. Log cabin feel was fun albeit a bit cramped to navigate between the tables. Menu had good German draft beer list - always appreciate the draft beer in a German restaurant. Anyway - the style is to order a main course and most sides come family style. For about $16-$17 dollars each - my wife got a very small knock wurst and I, a very small bratwurst. The sides were passable but rather nondescript and a bit hit or miss. Mushy green beans was least appetizing. Spaetzle was fine albeit small to be split. Service was fine. We did order a piece of cake to be shared - which was fine. Until we saw the next table each get pieces twice the size. Again. Not cheap and the cake was not bad but not worth the price. Clearly has a history and a steady clientele for area - but not worth the stop. read more

Amazing find today with this one! Was seated upstairs in a little sectioned off room, so was quiet and nice to not be in a crowded area. Loved the food as it is very well portioned (as you see in the photo) & very nice waitress we had. Lovely live music downstairs & nicely priced for all the food you get. What is pictured was their sauerkraut & sausage for just under 19 dollars & it came with all of that food! Definitely will be stopping by again! read more

We discovered Edelweiss while vacationing near the mountains in Staunton, VA! Before this, I had never tried authentic German food and I was pleasantly surprised by the cute atmosphere and live band that was playing inside on Sunday evening! Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and took very good care of us. My boyfriend LOVED every part of our dinner and we will be returning to try the Pork Shank Special! I wish I had room in my stomach for dessert because all the cakes looked amazing and homemade. A coworker has been telling me that this is his favorite restaurant! I was able to eat at Edelweiss on the way home from a trip. The next week my wife was with me and I suggested eating there again so that she could try it. My coworker and his wife happened to be there also! You won't go wrong with the Jagerschnitzel! Sides are served in small bowls that are refilled on request. The classic and red cabbage are my favorites. I like spaetzle but this was just ok. My wife got the Cod which one wouldn't think of getting at a German restaurant but it was very good as well. We will be back! read more

The restaurant is a log cabin that started to rot away years ago. The interior is dark but kitschy, with a collection of beer steins and nutcrackers on display. Our waitress was pleasant but the food could have been better. Got the German sampler today. Place was busy, and we only had a short wait to be seated. Sauerbraten, Wiener Schnitzel and Jägerschnitzel were tasty. Rahmschnitzel was very tender, but not much flavor. The gravy tasted okay, but I wanted more flavoring in the meat. Goulash was our least favorite. We left 1/2in the dish. I liked the Bavarian cabbage, but the red cabbage lacked the sweetness I'm use to from other German restaurants. SPÄTZLE was a little dry, and slightly on the tough side. Green beans were good. Got the Black Forest cake, and it was okay. Liked the fresh bread and butter before the meal. read more

My parents are from Germany so I grew up on a European diet. We love this place. The food, the service, the atmosphere and the entertainment are very good. All of us ordered something different so we sampled each others supper. The sides that are served with the main dish and the main dish were delicious. The desserts were also very good. We were served so much food. We took more than half of our supper home. We have made this restaurant one of our favorite places to eat. read more

I'm not German, don't have German friends, and have never been to Germany so I'll let otters describe how authentic the food is or isn't. What I'll describe is how tasty the food was and how great the service was. Despite it being near closing time, the staff was as friendly as could be when we walked in, treating us as family that they hadn't seen in years. Our waitress took the time to explain everything to us, from ingredients to portion size, again, treating us like family that she hadn't seen in ages. The "family style" sides were delicious, and they weren't shy about refills or making sure we had everything we needed or enough to eat. The best part was the authentic German music being played. When I say played you'd at first think it was recorded music piped overhead, you'd be wrong. Oh this evening there was an older gentleman in Bavarian clothing playing the accordion, this really was awesome. We didn't see him at first, but he was tucked away in a both off to the side, such a treat. If you're passing through, you're missing out by not stopping here. read more

Wow wow wow is this place baaaadddd. We are of German heritage but had never really eaten at a traditional German restaurant so we were excited to give this place a try. Now I think I know why traditional German restaurants are so few and far between. We went on a Sunday night. The wait for a table was about 45 minutes. After sitting down it took quite a while to get drinks but no big deal. The tables were crowded and the decor was dated and a bit run down but still no big deal. But the first red flag was when the waitress just dumped the silverware in the middle of the table. She made zero effort to be welcoming when she took our order. Then after we ordered it seemed like an eternity before the food came...it wasn't worth the wait. My wife got the Wiener Schnitzel which was bone dry. I got the paprika chicken which was also dry and flavorless. The sides were tasteless mush. Our 12 year old got potato pancakes which he said were greasy and without flavor. My nine year old got the frankfurter. He usually devours hot dogs but wouldn't touch this. He said "the skin is too crunchy" - I took a bite and sure enough, the hot dog had a thick leathery skin. It tasted like a 7-11 hot dog that sat under the heat lamp for 24 hours, except worse. The whole meal was like how I imagine prison food to taste like - lukewarm, dry, flavorless, and delivered with bad service. If I have to say something nice I will say that there was an older couple playing German songs on the accordion and fiddle (?) - they were very nice and the music was good. But unfortunately that did not make up for an awful dining experience. Sorry this sounds so harsh but this was an awful experience and other Yelpers should know about it. read more

This place has been in business a long time. The restaurant itself is in a log cabin which gives it a unique atmosphere. Aside from the food, which is quite good and typically German, it's just fun. It's just a fun place to have dinner. On certain days they do have a band a polka band that entertains guests as they dine, adding to the already interesting ambience. If you take a group reserve a table because seating is limited. If you want something different, take a group of people and just for the fun of it. If you want the same old drab menu and of Applebee's or Chili's then go there - but if you want a unique experience this is the place. I will add that the service is excellent. It's very hard to find a place with consistently good service anymore but every time I've ever been there the service was superb, perhaps because it is a business steeped in family history. read more

One of the most unpleasant restaurant experiences we've had in a long time. We arrived at 5:30 on a Sunday evening, and were told we'd have a wait of 30-45 minutes. There's no room inside, so we waited outdoors in the cold under a canopy. After about half an hour, we were freezing, but it had started to rain hard, so we couldn't escape to the warmth of our car. After an hour, we were notified they had a table for us. 20 minutes went by before a server came. Another 10 minutes and some bland rolls arrived at our table - but no silverware. I went hunting some down and found them at the empty hostess station. When the food finally arrived, it was under seasoned and underwhelming. We left chilled to the bone and so disappointed. read more

Oh my goodness!! This place was amazingly delicious They have a gluten free menu. The bratwurst, sauerkraut, red cabbage and German potato salad were all really tasty. This place is a must stop if you are on I 81 passing exit 213. We will definitely be back!! My partner had the sampler and everything was separated in small bowls so I was able to try the goulash and another gluten free dish he had. Absolutely loved this place and their food. read more

Edelweiss is a fantastic restaurant experience- one you don't want to miss!! Ambiance: Log style building with fireplaces, all in German style decoration with great feel and warmth. If you can, go when the band is playing! A three piece with horn, drum and of course accordion. The musicians are awesome and I had a ton of fun just watching them play- they love what they do and sound incredible, of course playing German and Austrian traditional tunes. For dinner, I recommend business casual attire. Food: I had the sample plate and it's a huge portion, easily shared. Surprisingly, the most liked dishes on the sample plate were not my traditional German favorites: The SAUERBRATEN (marinated sweet and sour roast beef in gravy) was awesome. Additionally the RAHMSCHNITZEL (pork medallions) were very flavorful and as other reviewers have noted, the medallions are slow cooked, moist, and fall apart with a fork. While all the food included in the sample plate is good, these two dishes were the tastiest and I highly recommend either. Service: It's a busy place and the service reflects that. Nice, friendly staff but a limited wait staff means it's not high touch. There are two levels to the restaurant - I highly recommend making reservations and request lower level if stairs are an issue. Price: I found the prices to be standard of specialty German restaurants, and not overly priced, especially considering the portion sizes. read more

I don't like leaving bad reviews, but this place would be a great candidate for Restaurant Impossible. Please don't waste your money. Every single plate was bad. High prices, cheap and poorly cooked food with small portions, and a HORRIBLE atmosphere. We opened the curtains near us before we hyperventilated because it was so dark. Disgusting sides of old vaguely vinegary hot cabbage, old sauerkraut, old green beans and seemingly baked chopped noodles. One of the kids said it tasted like a thrift store. We were serenaded by German Gregorian Chants as we choked down pork that tasted like canned tuna and Bratwurst that tasted like a squishy hotdog. I highly recommend getting mustard so you can cover up the taste. Best part was the gross water so we could wash it down. I don't recommend the cakes, unless you love store bought papery bread with whipped cream. To top it off we stopped in the hot bathrooms with poop on the wall. Bad food, bad ambiance, bad portions and bad prices. read more

To start off, I've been to southern Germany many times within the last 8 years. My expectations of finding good German food in the US has been lowered. That being said...My best way to describe the food is German American home cook made for the masses with restaurant convenience. It was bland and tasted like it was made hours ago but just sitting around. We live in Chattanooga, so we've been to Gatlinburg, TN, and Helen, GA and those previous experiences with German food did not leave me looking forward to ever traveling to Germany for the cuisine. Edelweiss changed that outlook utterly. First, when we pulled off the interstate at the restaurant's exit, we thought maybe there was a mapping error. T'ain't nothing near the exit that makes you think you are approaching food nirvana. So we progressed toward the first intersection and all we saw was a gas station, though the map said the restaurant was just past it. So we turned left and spied a building up on the hill through the screen of trees. We turned onto the road for the restaurant and just around the bend, there it was, this wonderful little chalet on the hilltop! They had tables set up out front and a pavilion over them - it took me a bit to remember they might be getting ready for Oktoberfest. Despite the lovely weather, we chose to eat inside so we could enjoy the wonderful decorations. Our server was super helpful and we ordered the German Sampler to share with a few added side items (Bavarian Dumplings, German Potato Salad, and Sauerkraut) because we wanted to get as well-rounded an experience as possible. When the food came out, we were shocked at the number of dishes included! We had not read that the German Sampler also came with Red Cabbage, Bavarian Cabbage, Green Beans, and Spatzle. Talk about stuffed! Anyway, the main portions of the German Sampler were Sauerbraten, Goulash, Wiener Schnitzel, Rahmschnitzel, and Jägerschnitzel. Again, we were STUFFED. Everything was more delicious than I could have hoped and I am now much, much more enthusiastic about traveling to Germany. Forget Gatlinburg and Helen, go here for great German food. read more

Portions were fine. But food quality was not good and flavors often wrong. As a party of 5 we got to try a lot of different items on the menu and nothing really seemed right.
