I've been a customer at this establishment for three decades plus while the new ownership has created food that is quality all the way around, I feel that the pizza especially has lost all of its character. It once was very distinctive with their "Howdy special" pizza being the flagship. I was disappointed that it tasted nothing like it has for all the years I've been coming here. If you are expecting the flavor and recipes that made this restaurant special, You too will be disappointed. This is the bottom of my pizza! Our pizza was burned and tasted that way too. We were looking forward to a nice meal on New Years Eve. We were so disappointed in the service and the food! The restaurant had 3 tables total at 130pm so not to busy. The server felt it more important to watch football as I had to get up and ask for another drink. My husband and I went after the re-opening and we loved it! That's why the review such a drastic change from then to now. Edgewater do better, you just lost a loyal neighborhood customer. Pizza's pretty good! Really enjoyed their pasta sauce + peppers/sausage and garlic bread appetizer. Super bold, flavorful sauce. Drinks were great, too. This is a little dive place off the beaten path slightly in Edgewater. We were looking for some late-night food, so it fit the bill. They had a limited menu, which was understandable given the hour. Like many others that have posted, I have been going to the Edgewater Inn for 35 years. This was my favorite pizza in town. I heard that there were new owners and they had changed a few things. I was interested to see the changes were, and like some many others, I was greatly disappointed. The first thing was a change with the crust. Ownership said for shorter cook times. However, to me, the crust is the foundation for the pizza. This crust did not stand the test. Next was the change to the toppings or the lack of them. The old staple, Howdy Special, has been altered. Pickled jalapeños and sautéed mushroom. If you look at older pictures of this pizza compared to the current, you can see how limited the toppings are. The pizza of my childhood is no more. Even pepperoni is different from before. It is sad to say that Edgewater is no longer my #1 and I may not return. read more

I was born and raised in Boulder and believe that all pizza is ultimately "good." I didn't think different areas of the country had better pies or slices because you can essentially get every style in most mid-major metropolises. However, after visiting NYC for the first time (not sure why I waited so long), I realized how wrong I was. Everything I ever had barely compared at all. I mention all this to say, Edgewater Inn is one of 1-3 places in all of CO that could stack up to good New York pizza - not to say that this is New York style, it's just the mf spot. It's a lineage of family that works there and own/runs it. Little slice of paradise if you ever wanna take someone from out of town there or treat yourself. I spent 7 hours at the bar when I meant to pick up a pizza to go Most of the people at the bar had been going there for over 30 years. It was an absolutely fascinating experience to talk with the caretakers of this piece of Denver history, and I would recommend to anyone who asked. This was my 1st time here since the ownership change. I was a little apprehensive about the new crust but I really did like it! And when they told me why they changed the recipe (no preservatives, simple ingredients, fresh) it made sense. It is a floppy crust, kind of NY style. The Sweetness is still on the menu and now has meatballs instead of ground beef which I think is an upgrade. And they finally put a good IPA on tap. What was the purpose of purchasing a classic restaurant if you're going to change all the recipes and let people think it is the same that it has always been. I have eaten at the Edgewater Inn for over 50+ years. What they did to the Howdy Special would make Benny and Josephine roll over in their grave. I went shortly after management changed and was not happy. Different crust, sauce, and different toppings. A different pizza. A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Some friends talked me into going there with them recently, they too realize it's not the same. Sorry to say I will not be going back. My message to the new management...... " IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT." What was the purpose of purchasing a classic Colorado Pizza Institution famously known for their Pizza . I recently came here with my Dad, before the restrictions happened again, and the pizza was so good. I was happy to have left overs for the next day and I usually don't like leftover pizza. Let me tell you about my first Edgewater Inn experience.... As a native (yes, some of us are actually from here), I'd heard about Edgewater pizza many times but never experienced it. Now that I live in the neighborhood, it was time to test the legend. Expectations were high. We entered the flavor stadium and I was immediately hopeful about the food based on the atmosphere. Not dingy, but dark. Booths that were obviously as old as me. Regulars at the bar. Neon Coors Light signs. All of these acting to me as great signs of a place with some character. Things have happened here. There have been laughs and cries. There was probably a couple fights. Life has been lived in this place. Which is a refreshing change of pace compared to the clean-walled, sterile, millennial restaurants we're all used to now (I'm a millennial - I'm allowed to make fun of us). Let get to the important stuff. The food. Josh and I ordered a couple brewskis cuz Josh and I always order a couple brewskis. We decided on some wings as an app, and split a large "Easy" pizza. The wings came. A bar-basket of some classy looking chicken appendages. Juicy, large, and with a side of, what appeared to be, homemade ranch. The sauce was semi-buffalo, semi-BBQ, fully sensational. My pallet was properly pampered for some pizza. Then they brought it out. It was steaming like a bowl of soup. That sucker probably hadn't been out of the oven for a minute. The appearance was inspiring. Toppings littering the common grounds of the crust like perfect chaos. We gave it a couple minutes to cool down and dug in. Question for you, Mr./Mrs. reader of this review. Do you, honestly, think you can order a topping-full pizza, go in blindfolded, and tell me every topping it has? I would beg to argue that you could not. But at Edgewater you could. Never have I eaten a pizza so rooted by, no... so defined by... NO, so established through its toppings. Each topping danced around my taste receptors like a stone age jester - pleasing and entertaining its king. First mushroom, then sausage, then pepper, then onion. I could go on. They were all there. It was like each topping was a different musician in a famous band, and they were all sitting at my table. Peter, John, Paul, George, and even Ringo. Let's talk crust real quick. Bear with me as I am an engineer.... When I grabbed a slice of this delectable deity, I could hold it by the crust, and it still had the foundation to hold its own weight and stay upright. A perfect cantilever. Most pizzas don't have that type of foundation. Let alone when you add the musical toppings described above. Most pizzas would droop like a wet noodle. This pizza had stout. More on the crust - flaky, crispy, not burnt. The amount of science and man hours that went into the development of the dough and timing/temperature of the oven are something I will never understand but can only tip my hat to. The cheese and sauce - usually the most defining part of a pizza, simply won best supporting actress in this case. They didn't need center stage, they were just happy to hold together the symphony that already existed. This review was vetted - Josh agreed that this was also the best pizza he thinks he's ever had. Being CSU grad, we both gave a nod to Krazy Karl's, which had for so many years held that title from us. But this was different. This pizza had serious gusto. As Josh explained it, the owner of Edgewater would probably scoff at the owner of Krazy Karl's, and tell him to come back and talk to him after 25 more years of business. It really disappoints me to see some one and two star reviews hanging around the top of this Yelp list, when I most certainly had the best pizza experience of my entire life in one night. Terrible food. I just had the worst "calzone" I've ever had... No ricotta cheese at all, mostly bread and over-sweet marinara from a can with HUGE chunks of low-quality Italian sausage. If it actually had ground beef in it - I couldn't find any. It also came with 3 slices of American cheese half melted on top - rather than cheddar as stated on the menu. There's a big difference between cheddar and slice of plastic wrapped American, guys. The cheese was the consistency of melted plastic. I managed to eat about a third of it. I'm guessing they don't change the deep fryer oil nearly often enough because the macaroni bites and mushroom bites both smelled and tasted kinda the same - and they really shouldn't. The Paisano salad was also weak. Mostly iceberg lettuce and black olives. Also, they have a policy of both "no separate checks" and "one credit card per table"... so, if you are there with friends, be prepared to pay cash or to use the $3 ATM they conveniently have on site; businesses get kickbacks from those in case you were unaware. This is not a customer service driven culture. If you don't care about providing a frictionless dining experience and you don't care about the quality of the food you put out why be in the restaurant business? The restaurant itself was clean enough, but it clearly hasn't had a refresh of the interior in far too long and despite the surfaces being clean, there is an odor of grease that has seeped into the walls. I love their pizza, but feel overcharged. We ordered 2 larges (15") pizzas and got medium size at best. When I called to see if the order had accidentally been placed as mediums and maybe I was just over charged, the gentleman told me no, the order had been placed as 2 larges. When I followed up by asking how a supposed 15" diameter (large) pizza can fit in a 14" x 14" box he told me he did not know how the math worked... but that I could call back the next day when the manager would be there. THE "Howdy Special" (L) for $24 is a steal, this pie was the S%@T. I grew up on their sausage and mushroom, after water skiing on Sloans in the 60's. But, coming back after 30 plus years, this is the pie I always turn my special friends on to. Such a disappointing experience the last two times I ordered from them. Something has changed in the kitchen. Same pizza names and ingredients but not prepared the same way anymore. I returned a Great White pizza because it didn't look like a Great White. When I got the replacement I realized they were no longer prepared the same. So sad. The pizzas are now burned evey time.
