Disclaimer that we did not end up booking with Edith Meyer. When discussing with our event coordinators, they all agreed that Edith Meyer cakes were the absolute best! We reached out by e-mail and attempted to set up a tasting but had some difficulty due to scheduling conflicts for all parties involved, no one's fault. Eventually, Edith offered a sample box for us to take away. The sample box would need to be picked up at her residence and was very affordable. Payment for this was also an easy process. Within the sample box, we were provided with the most popular flavors and custom flavors could be sampled for an additional fee. When we went to pick up the box, it was set out per the instructions she had provided to us. Right away, we can tell that it was very carefully put together and gave us another early impression on the amount of detail that she puts into her craft. For the cakes themselves, we had four flavors to try which were delicious and we had fun playing around with 8 buttercream flavors that we were offered in the box. I would recommend pacing yourself because there is a lot of cake and buttercream to have in one sitting. We even created a spreadsheet and tier list on what our preferred combinations were to help narrow our top 3 options. A couple weeks before the wedding, (I know seemingly last minute but it was a misunderstanding on my part) I sent her various paper samples that I used to create my wedding invitation. I got married a few months ago in Aptos and she made 5 different, unbelievable cakes for us, EVERYBODY complimented us on the artistry and the TASTE of the cakes. Normally you get one or the other, the look or the taste, but with Edith Meyer cakes you actually get both. She nails it. We did our cakes as centerpieces for all of the tables. INITIAL REVIEW (unedited): I did an initial consultation with Edith and then signed a contract with her and gave her a deposit. She would not respond to email after that. I had to loop in the venue coordinator who recommended her onto my email threads in order to get Edith to respond to anything from me. She finally sent me a sketch of my cake that was a plain white three-tiered cake with one plain ribbon around each tier, and a flower on each tier. She noted she would not provide the flowers (they would need to come from my florist). So it was just a plain three-tier cake with one lonely ribbon on each tier, and literally no other detail. The cake incorporated none of my design elements (indeed, it incorporated no design elements, period), so I asked to come down for a follow-up consultation (noting I would pay the additional fee to do so). I offered Edith the option to instead return my deposit and we'd go our separate ways. She opted to return my deposit. EDIT: Edith has responded and said that the plain white cake she sketched for me was exactly as described in the contract. This is misleading and betrays an incomprehension of the actual issue on Edith's part. The big issue, at least for me, was that she wouldn't respond to email. That's where it began, at least. Instead of make time to talk to me about my design, she sent me a sketch that matched the contract description she wrote up after our initial meeting. I thought the sketch was plain and did not incorporate any design elements. It was not creative. I was disappointed. I realize now that the reason that my cake design incorporated none of my design elements was because Edith had apparently forgotten everything we talked about in our initial consultation and was referring only to the contract description, and apparently not to any notes from what I had told her at our consultation, to prepare the design. I told her I needed to do another consultation because the sketch was not what I had in mind. She smugly told me it was "PRECISELY" (which she used in her comment below as well) what the contract stated. Clearly, the problem is that the client is an unreasonable and implacable because she even hates the same design that was "PRECISELY" in the contract! No. Edith conveniently forgets that she had been ignoring my emails trying to have input on the cake for over a month. She also glosses over the fact that I asked to come down for another consultation to give her more direction and offered to pay extra for her time. She chose to return my deposit rather than make time to learn what I wanted out of my wedding cake. Does she view the description in her contract as a starting point for discussion or as the end-description of the product? I think she, herself, is unclear on this, or if she is not unclear she exploits the ambiguity to her benefit. I've just uploaded the sketch she sent me to the photos here. You can take a look at what she "designed" and judge for yourself. I think it looks like a plain cake with nothing done to it. Keep in mind she was clear that the flowers are not part of her design and are meant to simulate what she wanted my florist to provide. I think there is one particular objective fact that shows that the "communication issue" is really that Edith dropped the ball on my order and not that we had some sort of personal issue that could not be resolved: She told me at our consultation she would incorporate the design on the lace from my dress into the cake. I was thrilled at this and, in response to her request, sent her pictures of my dress. She did not incorporate them into my sketch and, later, when I asked about this, she told me it was a new design element and she would need to draw me up a new contract and collect an additional fee. But... it was her idea that she came up with at my consultation (before she drew up the contract) and I had sent her photos of the dress at her request...? Was I irrational in concluding that she would incorporate the lace design from my dress into my cake when it was she who brought it up and asked for the pictures? When should I have asked her about the additional charge that this would incur? Should I have known that I needed to get multiple different contracts from her throughout the process? Working with Edith was a confusing experience. She was at first non-communicative, then defensive, and then escalated our conflict for no reason. For me, though, the bottom line is this: The wedding cake is the focal point of the wedding. Do you want your cake designed by a rattled momtrepreneur struggling to juggle her current clients? That's what the mishmash of mixed reviews for Edith indicates to me is going on. I really appreciate how she gives you a plate of cake and frosting individually so you get a chance to mix and match. She holds her cake tastings at her home/studio which has such a great vibe. You can see all the plants and flowers she has in her garden (some of which she uses in her cakes). The flavors of her cake are subtle but delicious. My husband and I got married on May 18, 2013, and Edith did our wedding cake. Both John and I are gluten-free and we were worried we wouldn't be able to find a good gluten-free wedding cake option. Boy, was that worry unfounded. Edith gave us several samples and we tried the chocolate first and both had to confirm that we were eating a gluten-free cake because it was so firm, moist and delicious. It was better than most regular cakes I have had. We are so happy we found her and our cake was beautiful and delicious and Edith was so sweet and easy to work with. Our guests loved it so much that several went back for seconds and thirds. Luckily our coordinator put a few slices aside for us so we could have more than just the bites we had at the cutting! I've read reviews for other cake bakers wherein the tasting was amazing, but the actual wedding cake turned out dry or not as delicious. Not so with Edith. Despite a little payment snafu (on our end), Edith was very gracious about it, and brought our cake all the way up to Sausalito, where it was ready and waiting for us when we arrived at our reception. Perhaps it's a little much to say it was the star of the party, but it really was. We got tons of compliments on it, and several people were clamoring to have us cut into the dang thing so they could have at it! We are very glad that we allowed Edith to guide the design, as what she suggested looked, I am sure, better than our original idea would have. The design was a top tier of white chocolate wrap painted with redwood trees, and then two bottom tiers with dark chocolate wrap painted with roots. Although the design didn't go all the way around the cake like I was initially expecting, hey, who am I kidding? That level of detail would have taken her all week, so I was more than appreciative, especially since I didn't specify I wanted the design everywhere. I am slightly embarrassed to admit I have no clue what the flavors were on one of our tiers, since I couldn't remember and hadn't tried it yet. The slice I had was completely delicious, though. It was a moist dark chocolate with dark chocolate ganache and Meyer lemon curd buttercream fillings, frosted with a lighter chocolate ganache (some said it tasted like coffee) and then wrapped with the dark chocolate wrap. The dark chocolate wrap was almost the texture of a Tootsie Roll, but with the flavor of a chocolate bar - awesome! Both the wedding cake and cupcakes was perfect and everything we asked for. It all started with the cake testing in her cute perfect home which made us feel very welcomed. I have never been a huge fan of cakes but everything about the tasting and fresh flavors she had to offer convinced us immediately. After we discussed the plan for our wedding, Edith gave us a sketch and with some communication later we agreed on a plan. Me being easy going myself, didn't feel that I needed to talk to her till the wedding day came close. All I did was confirm, and the day of she came and went, putting everything perfectly in place. We are forever grateful to Edith for creating the cake of our dreams! We went into our tasting not sure of what we wanted and are so happy we worked with someone so creative, artistic and thoughtful as Edith. Edith used our wedding invitation design as the basis for her creation and sketched the most gorgeous fern up a full 5 layers of cake during the consultation. It was hard to choose which of her cakes/frostings to choose since they all were delicious. Edith is one of the few bakers who sources all organic products in her cakes and it makes a huge difference. When we saw our cake for the first time - we were blown away by how she was able to perfectly execute her vision to reality. it was stunning and went perfectly with the aesthetic of our wedding. I cannot say enough good things about Edith and her cakes. My wife and I got married two years ago and I'm still talking about that cake. We got married at a resort so had no say in choosing caterers, and since I'm a professional chef, I threw all my culinary hopes and dreams into the cake. She did not disappoint. 1.5 years after the event, we defrosted the top and went at it. Still just as good as that first day. We think a good wedding vendor does 2 things well: service and quality. In the case of Edith, her desserts and cake were 4 out of 5 on the quality scale. However, her service was between a 2 or 3 out of 5. Service: My wife and I were looking for a cake vendor who could also do custom mini-desserts for the dessert station we envisioned. In first speaking with Edith, she made us feel confident that she would be great for the job as she loved the idea of us doing mini versions of Chinese pastries to make it personal to us. After deciding to go with Edith for both our cake and desserts, we did a tasting of the desserts (had already tasted the cake) in January 2016, with our wedding in August 2016. Her versions of the desserts were good and we made sure to tell her so during the tasting. We did also have some requests for changes that we compiled after our tasting and sent through via email. We had been in a similar mode of collaboration with other vendors previously and so didn't think much of the email. A few days later, Edith responded and in light of our email, went back on our original agreement and declined to do the custom Chinese pastries. We quickly replied back saying that we did not mean to offend her and still wanted to move forward with the Chinese pastries as we had tried in the tasting (after all, we did think they were good!). One month passed, no response. We followed up with her via email and phone a few times and come April 2016, still no response. If it weren't for our wedding coordinator following up with Edith and eliciting a response from her, we honestly don't know if we would have ever heard back from her, despite already having a contract and deposit with her! We felt bad if we had offended Edith and tried to communicate that back in January 2016 -- but still to not respond for 3 months is extremely unprofessional. In fact, Edith actually never resumed communication with us directly all the way through our wedding; our coordinator had to serve as the go-between person for us, which was bizarre and frustrating. When we did hear back from Edith via our coordinator, she stood firm on not doing the Chinese pastries -- which was confusing to us given our initial impression when we signed our contract with her. This would have been really helpful to know way earlier so we could have adjusted our plans. With only 2-3 months before our wedding before we got a definitive answer from Edith (via our coordinator) on our custom pastries, my wife and I had to re-design our dessert plans with Edith and find a different way to incorporate those Chinese pastries (with a different vendor) -- on top of all the other planning and prep we had at that time. Quality -- the dessert menu and cake that we ultimately went with Edith for were good. She did cookies, a fruit tart, a panna cotta, and macaroons all with some interesting twists. Those were all well-received by our guests. The cake (Meyer lemon cake and fresh strawberry for 2 layers and vanilla cake and hazelnut buttercream for 1 layer) looked great and tasted good. So overall quality met what we expected for these desserts -- they just weren't the desserts we originally envisioned and the process to get there was not smooth. Overall, if you're working off of Edith's set list of desserts and cake flavors, she's a good option for the Carmel-area. You should feel confident that she'll execute from her set list of desserts well. But from our experience, we do want to pass on a word of caution regarding her ability to customize desserts and her professional practices. read more

Edith's cakes are the BEST I've ever had. She designed and baked my wedding cake and guests could not stop asking who did it and where did we find her?! I don't always eat cake at weddings, but when I know it is one of Edith's I make sure to get a piece. Not only are they delicious, but her work is so beautiful and meticulous. Working with Edith was a total breeze, and her cakes are honestly the most delicious I think I've ever had! We went to a tasting at her beautiful home in Santa Cruz, where she let us try a bunch of different types of cake and a bunch of different icings. She listened to what we were looking for and made some really helpful design suggestions along the way. We changed our minds and adjusted guest count, and she was always incredibly flexible and accommodating. I love cakes and desserts, so I know that I had to find a really great cake vendor for my wedding. We went to a couple cake places but I was not blown away by any of them. I came across Edith's website one day and loved her philosophy: organic, fresh ingredients, fair trade chocolate, homegrown lemon, etc. I contacted her about tasting and noted that she charges a fee for tasting, but that it would be absorbed as part of the wedding cake cost if you end up booking with her. The tasting was set at her cute house. The ambiance was really nice! (she set background music playing while we taste). I could totally taste how FRESH her cake was. I have always wanted a red velvet cake for my wedding, and as soon as she told me that she doesn't use food coloring and instead uses beets/radishes for the red color, I was SOLD! Three weeks ago our daughter got married and Edith Meyer provided the wedding cake. The cake was red velvet with a layer of chocolate ganache and a layer of rasberry frosting inside. The outside of the cake was a traditional white buttercream. Since we were having a beach theme for the wedding, the cake was adorned with starfish and an ocean theme. Edith's cakes are a work of art. They are beautiful to look at and she takes a lot of care and pride in making them unique to each individual's requirements. Not only do her cakes look great, they taste absolutely fabulous. In fact, I know that one of the guests ate four pieces of wedding cake because it was so delicious. Edith is a joy to work with and I would highly recommend her without any hesitation. She is one of the best wedding cake designers in the bay area and a real nice person to work with. read more

Edith is Perfect. We met her at the Santa Cruz Bridal Fair and I fell in love. Our wedding is Eco-Friendly, and Rustic Wedding Theme has been complimented by one of Edith's Brilliant ideas. The cake that Edith Meyer baked for our wedding was absolutely amazing! It was the most delicious wedding cake we and our guests had ever tasted - deep rich chocolate, yummy vanilla buttercream frosting, raspberry filling. But what really blew us away was that all this deliciousness was local, organic and socially responsible. Edith uses Fair Trade chocolate - I swear, it tastes better knowing that child labor was not involved in its production - eggs from local farmers, organic lemons from her backyard. To have a delicious, fair trade cake would have been enough for us. But Edith's cakes are works of art, too! She helped us envision a uniquely decorated cake that blew our guests away with its artistry. She reproduced the vintage postcards that we used in our decor, and placed them on the cake. It was spectacular!!! With Edith, you really do get to have your cake and eat it, too: delicious, organic, and beautiful! read more

Edith and her cakes are amazing. She created a cake for a fund-raising event that had everyone talking and going back for seconds. The cake was so rich and delicious, and the design was inspired and really reflected the work our organization does. We didn't want anything that even remotely looked like a wedding cake and Edith came up fabulous design that we would never have thought of on our own. We put on a fund raising event every year and they are a lot of work. After making the arrangements with Edith, I knew that I wouldn't need to worry about the cake. And I didn't! I couldn't imagine a better wedding cake experience then Edith presents couples with. Our wedding isn't for three more months, but I have no doubt that this rating will stay perfect. As both a life long baker and a perfectionist, finding someone to make my wedding cake wasn't easy. We went EVERYWHERE in the Santa Cruz and the surrounding area. I saved Edith Meyers for last because for some reason I envisioned her prices being higher then Just Cake or Icing on the Cake - a silly mistake as this is not the case at all. Not that these other places aren't yummy, but I left thinking "My cakes taste better then that". This was NOT the case at Edith's. The environment couldn't be more calming and relaxing - very important in this hectic wedding planning world. The presentation of the cake tasting allows you to mix and match flavors and ideas. Her designs are amazing - I quickly explained the cake I had started imagining and she pulled the vision from my head beautifully. And best of all I've NEVER had such amazing cake or butter cream, NEVER. I finally left a tasting thinking "How does she do that, I need her secret". I was so worried that I would get an estimate from her that couldn't fit into my tight wedding budget because I NEEDED that cake. I couldn't believe when it came and her price was barely more the the higher end bakeries - and way lower then wedding cake specialty bakers we visited. I suggest you try everywhere, just like when shopping for the perfect dress, that way when you go to Edith's you will know you really are getting the best. read more

Edith made us the most amazing wedding cake. We had a floral cake with a combination of sheet cake and cupcakes and it looked absolutely wonderful! She also handmade an amazing robot cake topper for us. The cake also tasted out of this world - all of the cake was gone within an hour! She was great to work with and very reasonably priced. We are so grateful that we had her for our wedding! read more
