I won't lie, I was only here because my usual spot was closed. There's a pathology in our society when you can buy half-price socks at Freddy's at 5am on Black Friday, but you can't meet your basic human need for food [I know I'm being dramatic, but you see my point]. I've driven past this place a few times and wondered. From the outside it looked charming, unlike the first place I considered, which had the ambiance of a laundromat. Inside, it was generally charming, although slightly phony, as if they had bought a bunch of stuff from the "homey rustic feel" page of the restaurant supply catalog. The place smelled strongly of bacon, which would be a blessing for some patrons, but I prefer a neutral olfactory experience. No big deal though, at least it didn't smell nasty. Service was slightly slow/indifferent, but not a big problem, my coffee cup never went empty (my #1 service criteria at breakfast). As others have noted, prices seem a bit steep. I had a breakfast sandwich on bagel, which came with potatoes, and I think I paid about $16 with coffee. That's not shocking, but more than I would expect for a casual cafe on the, ahem, less-sophisticated end of the highway through HR. Food was pretty good. Potatoes were unique, and the sandwich was perfectly fine, nothing to complain about. Everything was presented well; my breakfast looked appealing. Almost forgot, there was no music. The menu also included lunch items but i didn't really look at that part since i was eager for a late breakfast. The choices were many and varied and deserve more exploration. The huevos rancheros was pretty good. I always hope for a good chili sauce for coverage but it's hard to find in Oregon. New Mexico has the best chili sauce for breakfast. I honestly have no words, absolute ten out of ten experience. The service was extremely quick and friendly, but the highlight was definitely the menu. Not only did everything sound amazing, they had an extraordinary assortment of vegetarian and vegan options incorporated into every part. Okay this place is awesome! We noticed this cute cafe right when we entered town. The inside matches the outside; farm style with tons of fun wall decor and a good country vibe. Big Road Trip through the Pacific Northwest brought me to Egg River, totally by accident. Didn't even use Yelp for this find, just spotted it while we were looking for a place to stop so the lady friend could kick me out of the car. She had a phone interview for a job and needed me out of the car for it. My original plan was to just get a drink and do some journaling, maybe take a look at the menu. I saw the long list of eggs benedict and knew I had to eat. I went with the artichoke brie scrambled eggs benedict. Whoa, they were awesome. Maybe non scrambled would have been better, but not sure how it would have all worked out with the brie. Upon entering there is no indication if you should seat yourself, which we finally did after four employees failed to greet us. Unfortunately, the service did not improve as the meal continued. As an example, I finished my coffee, waited for a refill, before flagging down a waitress. She then told me they were out and would need to brew more. I've been traveling a lot lately, and much of that in odd, unrelated places. I just found myself leaving a scathing review of Iron Skillet Restaurant in Ontario, CA (don't go there), which somehow reminded me of the very good breakfast I had in Hood RIver last week. I was very pleased with the food, service and coffee at Egg River Cafe, which is pretty much the breakfast trifecta. There was only one server working that morning, and although she had several tables, she was prompt, very nice and not shy with the coffee refills. The menu offered a good, if somewhat uninspired selection of breakfast choices. The ingredients tasted fresh and flavorful, and the choice of organic eggs was a nice one to have. The breakfast potatoes were particularly crunchy and fantastic. All told, Egg River Cafe was a completely enjoyable breakfast experience. If you find yourself trying to decide whether to eat there or at Iron Skill in Ontario, CA, I strongly suggest going to Egg River. I appreciated the large coffee cups (hate waiting for refills) and that the coffee was organic but I wasn't happy about the single-serving creamers because of extra preservatives and plastic waste. This place gets busy on the weekends, so be prepared for a possible wait. Portions are very large. Even something like kids pancakes ends up being a massive amount of food. I had the western omelette, which was pretty good. The country gravy started to congeal as it cooled off, so I probably wouldn't get it next time. I had biscuits and gravy as the side, and it too hat the country gravy. I'd try the sausage gravy to see how that was before completely abandoning all the gravy here. It just wasn't my favorite. The omelette itself was really good. It had a lot of flavor. I just had water to drink. I thought that $3.50 was a bit steep for regular drip coffee, so I went without. There isn't much area to park right in front, but there is usually some parking on the street nearby with a short walk. Overall, I enjoyed the meal. I will be back. read more
