I enjoy many things about this place; it's small and friendly, and most of the instructors are kind and knowledgeable. But you are more interested, probably, in what I don't like: Rocco Ragano. He's a Nia instructor who titters when the class makes mistakes based on "assumptions", which means we assume he was about to do the same thing again and followed that instinct, when he's instead changing it up without any verbal communication. He is a classically trained dancer besides, so his choreography is overly complicated, and he's talented enough that he can't comprehend or assist people who aren't already proficient--not traits you want in a teacher. Imagine trying to learn basic math from a astrophysicist who has an internalized understanding of numbers, and can't imagine why you don't just get it: he's the Nia equivalent of that. And there's a touch of malice too; he seems to delight in the mistakes of his students, even when the mistakes are due to his poor leadership. I was so frustrated and ashamed that I didn't stay for his cool-down. I left in the middle of another overly complicated routine, with just 7 minutes of class left--I couldn't endure any more of him. When I walked out the door, he was smiling smugly in the mirror, like it was an accomplishment to distort the meaning and purpose of Nia to the point that a student *who truly enjoys it* has a miserable experience, gives up and goes home. Other instructors though, are marvelous, helpful, and even inspiring. I would avoid that man, unless you are already a Nia and dance star. Otherwise, prepare to be alienated. read more

I'm doing the seasonal cleanse/detox again! It's a great program of cleansing and resetting your eating, movement, and rest;, clearing old stuff that gets stuck in the body in high stress times (the freeze response, which clogs everything up), etc. It helped me get down past a very stuck point. (those last 5-10 pounds we all talk about) And the recipes she shares, and the group support and multi-sensory experience of the workshop is brilliant. Also, Gloria Gonzalez, the owner, has mentored so many in the ways of true, conscious, self- and inner-directed health. And all the staff is on board with these techniques. 5 stars for Manuel!!! The most INCREDIBLE masseuse ever. I've been coming here for years, but mostly only for massages. I haven't really used the gym equipment and I've never tried one of their classes. The owner is very accommodating and kind though, and will give you a free class pass so you can come check it out if you are interested. The locker room is great: shower, lockers, and toiletries in case you forget something. Although, I will say that if you are changing in front of the lockers and anyone comes in you are giving a peep show to the front counter staff and anyone else who happens to be in the gyms front area. That is a little irksome. It would be nice if there was a bit more privacy offered if anyone comes in. You can change in the bathroom itself, but if someone is in there you are left changing in front of the door and praying no one opens it as you shimmy into your robe. The message of the gym, of whole wellness, is great and inspiring. The atmosphere lends itself to Zen-like calm both before your massage, as you are sitting in the bright and beautiful sun deck, and after, when you emerge renewed. read more

The yoga classes by Gloria and Megan are the bomb. I have been practicing yoga for over 15 years and they are finally teaching me how to do it right. I had a cathartic experience the other day with Gloria in a yoga class. After decades of my pelvis being swayed out instead of tucked in, my body finally got a glimpse of what it should be like when she instructed me to get in a certain position with my legs braced together. I had my first body work session with Gloria the other day and it was extraordinary. Not only that, I was greeted at the door with a smile and was given water and then a tour. I was walked to a beautiful and unassuming spot with an ocean view. A little nook of a sitting space to start my relaxation process. When I went in for my session, my body felt really exhausted and tight. I also had some lower back discomfort. Gloria took her time to understand what my body needed to feel better and to release the discomfort and exhaustion. I walked in feeling pretty icky and left feeling totally rejuvenated and free from discomfort. I went home for a long nap. The whole process was simple, pleasant and amazing. read more

This place is awesome. There are two reasons why I like it so much. First, the NIA classes taught by Alice are AMAZING. Who knew I would break such a crazy sweat while dancing barefoot to some seriously cool music at 8:30 a.m. on a Tuesday morning? It took a time or two to decide this form of fitness was for me, but I think I could become an addict. Alice's class is different every time, and it's INCREDIBLE exercise. It's also strangely relaxing. Alice is a born NIA teacher - an expert dancer, an absolute sweetheart of a person, and a joy to watch. I'm somewhat inhibited around others, but Alice is such a great choreographer and so not self-conscious​ that I can't help but say, "Oh yeah, I think I need to let go and dance my butt off today!" She truly makes the class so fun and I feel so energized and empowered after I leave. Second, the studio that the NIA class is located in happens to be my favorite kind of atmosphere for exercise: cozy, light-filled, and intimate. Oh, and everyone is welcome. And that's very nice. Highly recommend Alice's NIA class at EEW. It's a great workout, it's fun, it's joy, it's relaxation ... and so much more! read more

Undoubtedly, the best place in town, and possibly the country. They don't just offer - but actually integrate - a range of services. From fitness / health / movement, to somatic experiencing, to detox programs for your body. And they bring it all together - so the fitness class helps move stuff that the detox is clearing out. And the SE works with the mind, and makes it all much easier. Also an amazing place to lose weight - the programs help you find what is right for your body, instead of telling you what you should do. I recently had a massage from Megan who also teaches a couple of yoga classes that I have participated in at Eight Elements West. The massage was excellent! I've had a few massages around PB, and no one has really seemed to understand the human body and how it functions which I deem critical for an excellent massage experience. Megan was very professional and respectful of my needs and desires. I literally floated out of there and immediately scheduled several more sessions. My body has been screaming for this kind of attention and healing. Megan's yoga classes are perfect for me as well. I have NEVER had a yoga instructor who offers so much gentle guidance and personal attention to each class participant. There is also lots of positive reinforcement for those of us who are older beginners as well as for the experienced yogis. Mats, blankets, and towels are all available in studio so you don't have to remember to bring those items. Off street parking is available under the building though it's tight. A friendly group of people attend the classes and all the staff acknowledge you - again something that one does not always find in PB, Bird Rock, and LJ. read more

Best yoga place! Great pilates too. I have never learned so much about yoga in my life. All the instructors I tried were very talented, each with a little different flavor but all of superior quality. The instructors are very detail oriented so you get the most out of your workout. This is a great place for any level of yoga and pilates: beginner through advanced. They accomodate all and give personalized attention. I tried this place because I had an unlimited monthly deal through one of those daily deal sites. I would join this studio if I wasn't moving to the Bay Area soon. Highly recommended! read more

Eight Elements is a great mind-body fitness experience with trainers skilled in Tai Chi & yoga. Accommodating staff got me right in when I needed a massage. The surrounding are comfortable, clean, but not fancy. My masseuse was great. I live walking distance, so it's convenient, but if you have to drive, there's ample parking in the attached parking ramp, a rarity for businesses around Windansea. When I'm in town, I'd love to take some classes here. Highly recommend. read more

I go to Eight Elements only for Nia classes and love it. (If you want to know what Nia is, check out the Eight Elements website or www.nianow.com--it's amazing!) The instructors are great and so is the owner, Gloria. I especially like that they are making improvements to the facilities, e.g., replacing the carpet in the dance/yoga studio with a lovely hardwood floor. The locker rooms are a little tight but sufficient, and I like that there's a shower I can use on days when I want to get cleaned up right after class. It's a great place. read more

Gloria has magic hands, I have had other massages here and all the therapists are also top rated but Gloria did a fantastic job. I was overwhelmed by the quality of service from the very first time I called to make a massage appointment to after I left. The woman who answered the phone went out of her way on Friday to make sure they could fit me in the next day. She was professional, friendly and had wonderful follow-through with her communication. Then came the massage. You can feel it when you are in the presence of a true healer, and my massage therapist, Adal, was one such individual. I have been attending 8ew classes and trainings for over 15 years. I LOVE the NIA dance classes and over the years have also attended Barre, Pilates, and Weights classes at 8EW. Gloria Gonzalez, the owner, seems to hire only teachers who have deep knowledge about the human body, mind, and spirit.  And, I have found each teacher there to be highly competent and generous in sharing the information they have.  I love that about this wonderful Institute that seems to be focused on helping people create and recreate health and wellbeing from deep inside and outside!  I am now over 60 years old. I wrote a review three years ago (I've attached it below) and today I reiterate all of it and still enthusiastically encourage everyone (18 to 80 years old) to try a few classes. If you are interested in personal growth and fitness, I think you'll love it! I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in this unique center for so many years!  I'm better for it! (May 2017). (May 2014): I've just returned from my first Yoga class at 8EW.  I've dabbled in Yoga in the past, but this class was different.  Gloria, the owner of 8EW, taught it.  She and all of her staff have deep knowledge.  They are competent and generous with their skills.  8EW is NOT a typical workout gym. I have been a member for years and have attended several of their classes.   I've gotten the full body assessments, prescriptions, and training from Gloria and her staff.  My spirit flies in NIA classes, my muscles strengthen in Weights class, and now my body aligns and opens up using my scapula, my shoulders, my sacrum and pelvis in a Yoga class.  I, like all of you, have a busy life so I don't do it all, but there is a part of me that would like to.  They offer classes in nutrition and Pilates, give massages and focused cranio-sacral work as well as acupuncture and Chinese medicine!  This is La Jolla's best kept secret...a wonderful health mecca for body, mind and soul.  I listen closely to each of the instructors and give it all I've got because it's worth it.  I'm healthier in all ways!  If you haven't gone, go! I received a massages from Kristina yesterday and she is fantastic! She incorporated energy work into her flow and it really helped release my stubborn muscles. She listens to you and can feel where your body needs extra time to release it's tension. Kristina uses Cranial therapy as well which I love and is extremely effective to help relieve and relax the body.
