I thought it was just a bagel place. I can take or leave bagels. I can pick up a bag at Safeway. On this particular day I showed up ready to shop at said Safeway, famished. There was a sandwich board outside of Oasis with smoothie specials. They've got something besides bagels? Due to my tendency to go off list and grab unhealthy groceries when I'm hungry (that ends up rotting in the fridge) I ducked into Oasis. What? I just stood there for a second. My mountain neighbors were grazing contentedly at their tables. The menu boards were crammed with options. Things I like. Where do I even begin? My husband had been gatekeeping. I called and told him that I found this cafe and asked if he wanted anything - and he said he'd been there a couple of times before on the way to work. The bagels (though he told me that they were fresh and delicious) were a footnote to all the offerings. I honestly felt overwhelmed. The cashier said I could choose a fresh baked item - I selected a croissant - and they'd stuff it with sandwich ingredients. I chose chicken salad and it was epic. Generous shreds of chicken in a flavorful dressing that was creamy without tasting like greasy mayo. To top it off, you can choose a "free" bag of gourmet chips off a rack. That treat makes your $9 sandwich reasonably priced. I got it all to go, for lunch later, and picked up a green smoothie to get me through the store. When I walked in Safeway this lady asked, "Did you get that next door? It's so good isn't it?" All of my neighbors have been gatekeeping, while I have been relegated to Subway and Starbucks. Another time, I went to Oasis with my husband and got a breakfast burrito and fresh squeezed OJ, which were so good. We were anticipating an overnight guest from the east coast so we picked up a few black-and-white cookies for dessert and crumb cake to complement our home-cooked breakfast. All were very fresh and tender baked goods; our guest told us she felt so special. Next I'm going to try their deli sandwich since my tendency is drive over a half hour down the hill to Jersey Mike's, thinking I had no choice. These gatekeepers get on my nerves.

I asked the girl if it came with cream cheese she said yes. So I ordered the garlic chive. Then I proceed to order the crème brûlée latte which on the sign said seven dollars and some change. I asked for whipped cream and she proceeds to ask me do you want cold foam or whipped cream? Normally coffee joints will give you whipped cream for free and charge a dollar for cold foam, so I said whipped cream is fine. I pull up to the window wait almost 5 minutes for anyone to greet me and then hit with almost $22 for a mini coffee and a basic breakfast sandwich. First thing I'll say is for the prices. People are paying for these coffees. They should be bigger than the size of my palm. The second thing I will say is always inform your guests of charges. Especially when it doesn't state it the menu. Third thing is creature guest as soon as they pull to the window even if there's a waiting time just so they feel acknowledged. This is a one and done type stop. I'll never come here again.

First, I was really impressed with the service! My order was ready when I arrived about 10 minutes after placing it, even though they were SUPER busy. I thought that was great timing. The caramel iced coffee was surprisingly really good! It was sweet without being overly sweet, and the cold foam was a nice addition. I got a large during their $1.99 coffee deal, so it was definitely worth it. For a place that doesn't specialize in coffee, I was impressed! The twice-baked hash brown was just okay, but that may have been partly my fault because it was slightly cold by the time I ate it. I think I would have enjoyed it more fresh and hot. Unfortunately, the pumpkin pull-apart bagel was where things went downhill. The bagel itself had a good flavor, and I was really excited to try it with the pumpkin cream cheese spread. However, the spread tasted STRONGLY like onion and chives. There were even actual pieces of onion in my pumpkin cream cheese! My best guess is that the same scooper was accidentally used between the onion and chive cream cheese and the pumpkin spread. Either way, pumpkin + onion is a combination I never want to experience again. It completely overpowered the first bite, and I couldn't get the onion taste out of my mouth. I ended up using my coffee as a palate cleanser and eating the rest of the bagel plain, which unfortunately made it pretty dry. Overall, the service was fast, the coffee was great, and the bagel itself had potential. I'd definitely come back, but I really hope they're more careful about cross-contact between the different cream cheese flavors because surprise onion in pumpkin cream cheese was ROUGH.

A West Valley Gem Packed with Flavor, Charm, and Plenty to Discover…read more If you've ever driven past that bright pink building on the corner of 101st and Grand Avenue in Sun City and wondered, "What's in there?" let me save you the suspense: it's the New York West Bakery, and it's absolutely worth pulling over for. In fact, I've made the hour-plus drive each way more than a dozen times just to visit. Whenever I find myself anywhere in the West Valley, this place is a mandatory stop. I've taken countless photos of my visits because there is always something new to see, taste, or admire. Under its new ownership, New York West Bakery has evolved into a wonderfully unique fusion-style café. The menu is delightfully unexpected, featuring everything from traditional breakfast favorites and homemade tamales to incredible Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches. If I can dig up some of my photos, I'll add them because these sandwiches deserve their own spotlight. The transformation isn't limited to the menu. The Interior: Spotlessly clean. During one recent visit, I watched an energetic staff member carefully mopping the floors and making sure everything looked perfect. It's obvious they take pride in the place. The Exterior: They've added a charming outdoor patio complete with colorful umbrellas, comfortable seating, and newly planted trees that will provide even more shade as they grow. It's a fantastic addition and makes for a relaxing place to enjoy a pastry and coffee. The Food: Where This Place Really Shines When New York West Bakery gets it right, they absolutely knock it out of the park. Their fruit tarts are hands-down some of the best I've had in years. They're fresh, beautiful, bursting with flavor, and surprisingly affordable for the quality you're getting. Best of all, everything is made from scratch, which shows in every bite. The newer savory menu items are also a huge win. Their Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches deliver serious value. They're enormous. Honestly, one sandwich is big enough to share and still leave you feeling satisfied... or at least leave just enough room for dessert. And speaking of dessert, I have to mention those fruit tarts one more time. They're that good. My wife Lucy absolutely loves them. In fact, "love" might be an understatement. If fruit tarts had a fan club, she'd probably be the president. New York West Bakery continues to grow and evolve, and it's exciting to watch. Between the friendly atmosphere, expanding menu, beautiful patio, and from scratch-made baked goods, it's become one of my favorite hidden gems in the Valley.

Update: June 2026 The new owners have expanded into more of…read morea café than a bakery, and a fusion one at that since you can get Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches, tamales, and traditional breakfasts. I love that they added outdoor seating with cheery umbrellas and have planted trees to provide additional ambiance and shade, although the highway noise will always be problematic. The inside is spotless and while I was there a friendly staffer was keeping it that way by energetically mopping. Sadly, the St. Joseph's pastry I had had a tough not flaky or crisp shell, but the ricotta filling was light and good. I was so looking forward to the poppy seed bread but when I got it home and cut into it, the filling was not spread out throughout the bread and there wasn't much of it. The bread itself was not tear apart tender, but dry. I saved it by slathering butter on it and lightly toasting it, but that shouldn't have been necessary. For the prices, everything should have been top notch or marked down and labeled as day-olds. I'm curious about the breakfast and lunch café options, so I'll probably go back to give them a try, but note that the prices have increased by more than a few cents per item since the 2025 someone else posted, so check for the latest. Maybe they are trying to do too much and should limit the variety and be known for a few super delicious items that are always fresh and superior to what you could get in a supermarket. Having a few signature items and being the go-to place during special holidays would help define them, and please, please FRESHNESS is crucial--maybe the products are just drying out more because we're in AZ, but I'm not the only one mentioning dried out items.
