A West Valley Gem Packed with Flavor, Charm, and Plenty to Discover If you've ever driven past that bright pink building on the corner of 101st and Grand Avenue in Sun City and wondered, "What's in there?" let me save you the suspense: it's the New York West Bakery, and it's absolutely worth pulling over for. In fact, I've made the hour-plus drive each way more than a dozen times just to visit. Whenever I find myself anywhere in the West Valley, this place is a mandatory stop. I've taken countless photos of my visits because there is always something new to see, taste, or admire. Under its new ownership, New York West Bakery has evolved into a wonderfully unique fusion-style café. The menu is delightfully unexpected, featuring everything from traditional breakfast favorites and homemade tamales to incredible Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches. If I can dig up some of my photos, I'll add them because these sandwiches deserve their own spotlight. The transformation isn't limited to the menu. The Interior: Spotlessly clean. During one recent visit, I watched an energetic staff member carefully mopping the floors and making sure everything looked perfect. It's obvious they take pride in the place. The Exterior: They've added a charming outdoor patio complete with colorful umbrellas, comfortable seating, and newly planted trees that will provide even more shade as they grow. It's a fantastic addition and makes for a relaxing place to enjoy a pastry and coffee. The Food: Where This Place Really Shines When New York West Bakery gets it right, they absolutely knock it out of the park. Their fruit tarts are hands-down some of the best I've had in years. They're fresh, beautiful, bursting with flavor, and surprisingly affordable for the quality you're getting. Best of all, everything is made from scratch, which shows in every bite. The newer savory menu items are also a huge win. Their Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches deliver serious value. They're enormous. Honestly, one sandwich is big enough to share and still leave you feeling satisfied... or at least leave just enough room for dessert. And speaking of dessert, I have to mention those fruit tarts one more time. They're that good. My wife Lucy absolutely loves them. In fact, "love" might be an understatement. If fruit tarts had a fan club, she'd probably be the president. New York West Bakery continues to grow and evolve, and it's exciting to watch. Between the friendly atmosphere, expanding menu, beautiful patio, and from scratch-made baked goods, it's become one of my favorite hidden gems in the Valley. read more

Update: June 2026 The new owners have expanded into more of a café than a bakery, and a fusion one at that since you can get Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches, tamales, and traditional breakfasts. I love that they added outdoor seating with cheery umbrellas and have planted trees to provide additional ambiance and shade, although the highway noise will always be problematic. The inside is spotless and while I was there a friendly staffer was keeping it that way by energetically mopping. Sadly, the St. Joseph's pastry I had had a tough not flaky or crisp shell, but the ricotta filling was light and good. I was so looking forward to the poppy seed bread but when I got it home and cut into it, the filling was not spread out throughout the bread and there wasn't much of it. The bread itself was not tear apart tender, but dry. I saved it by slathering butter on it and lightly toasting it, but that shouldn't have been necessary. For the prices, everything should have been top notch or marked down and labeled as day-olds. I'm curious about the breakfast and lunch café options, so I'll probably go back to give them a try, but note that the prices have increased by more than a few cents per item since the 2025 someone else posted, so check for the latest. Maybe they are trying to do too much and should limit the variety and be known for a few super delicious items that are always fresh and superior to what you could get in a supermarket. Having a few signature items and being the go-to place during special holidays would help define them, and please, please FRESHNESS is crucial--maybe the products are just drying out more because we're in AZ, but I'm not the only one mentioning dried out items. read more

Large bakery with a broad variety of pastries and cakes making it a tough decision. They offer a light fare that is breakfast focused giving you some protein options on top of their bakery offerings. Plenty of inside seating, but no outside seating. Not the best part of town, but nice once you enter. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. read more

Stopped in to check this place out after seeing is on one of the local morning shows. Was greeted as soon as we came in and, stopped in for lunch and the sandwiches did not disappoint! The bread was fresh and delicious and you get a huge sandwich for the $$. After packing the leftover half of a sandwich for later, we then picked out some treats for later, which was a difficult task since everything looked so good. Interesting bakery with fresh breads and pastry, in addition to serving homemade sandwiches. They will take Special Orders just call and inquire for those special requests. Customer Service was very kind, courteous and somewhat helpful. I believe this person was relatively new and didn't have answers for all the questions being thrown at her by all the consumers but she did take the time to check with the bakery staff in the kitchen, so she did field all questions, etc. The establishment is very clean and well organized. Dayuuuumn Gina. We're not connoisseurs of banh mi, but we can sure as heck spot a counterfeit. This was, hands down, the worst banh mi of our collective lives. Just take a look at my pics, and then say to yourself, "Some guy on Yelp said the actual experience is worse than it looks". We were tapped to get dessert for tonight's Christmas Day meal. So, I decided to look into getting a Yule Log. I've never had one and have seen them on lots of baking shows (especially the holiday ones). So, I called my favorite bakery...guess which one...and asked if they do them for the holidays. The answer was a resounding "Yes!". So, I ordered it last week, scheduled to pick up Christmas Eve day. Like I said, I've never had one before, but had seen them on TV, so figured it would have a chocolate sponge with cream filling and covered in chocolate ganache. So, Hubby picked it up (he was out that way), said the bakery was packed, but had no issues with the order being ready. BTW, it was lovely...had some cute Christmas decorations on it (trees, holly flowers and Santa in his sleigh with reindeer). I honestly couldn't wait to try it. Took all my willpower not to stick my finger in the ganache for a taste, but I held off. So, I brought it to the family's for our Christmas and everyone thought it looked so good. In fact, no one had ever had one before, so this was getting quite exciting. After eating our food and watching some football, it was finally time to bring out the Yule Log. Call me surprised when we cut into it and the sponge was yellow with raspberry filling. Since I brought it, I got the end piece (lotsa ganache!!). It was deeeee-lish!!! The cake was light and the filling matched perfectly with the ganache (I love raspberry and chocolate together). The chocolate ganache was decadent, but I couldn't stop eating it. I was so happy with how it all turned out and everyone loved it! We can now say we've had a Yule Log and it was a twinkling light on our beautiful Christmas Day! read more

This has been a go-to place for me for pastries for probably around 10 years now, and the baked goods continue to impress! Over the past couple years they have rebranded a bit and I fear this might affect their long term success, but with my recent visit everything I had was so delicious. I had the crumb cake, raspberry cigar, black and white cookie, cannolis, cherry pastry, and cheese danish. I will keep going here as long as they keep up the good work in the baking department! My advice would be to hire more staff as only 1 lady was working up front and you could tell she was flustered. Only 2 workers were in the back cooking. I might also suggest returning to the baked goods roots and scrap trying to make sandwiches and soups and all the extra stuff. Order a birthday cake from here. Easy quick pick up and they had it done on time. Wait frosting and chocolate cake with pretty decorations. I am picky when it comes to cake and I was very impressed with how it tasted! Also very fair pricing. Location is just off the highway, great parking, spacious inside. So many options. We came for the breakfast but took cannolis to go, they were amazing. I had a plain toasted bagel with cream cheese. You can definitely taste that they are homemade and fresh...so good! They were made perfectly. BF had the breakfast sandwich on a garlic bagel with cream cheese instead of American. The ham was freshly sliced, sandwich made to order and flavors were so very good. We got our food to go but ended up eating them on the spot because they smelled so good and we had the whole place to ourselves. Both ladies at the front were friendly and helpful. The Italian baked goods are awesome. Very cute and comfortable atmosphere. Everything has been fantastic.

The last 3 times here have been very disappointing. The filling in a fruit pocket had dried up and was so rubbery, that I had to throw it out. Then the cookies I bought yesterday, for $20, all have the same consistency and bland taste like they were made with shortening. Unless you buy the Napoleon within a few hours of being freshly made, the phyllo dough gets chewy and you need a knife to cut through. 3 strikes and I'm out. read more

Being Italian by descent I am pretty picky about my pastry but this place knocks it out of the park. Fresh, delicious homemade pastry, breads, cakes and much more. You can watch the bakers as they prepare and make all of your favorites. Delicious and at a very reasonable price for the quality you get. This is our go to bakery for all of our delicious pastry desires. We drive about 30 miles to come here and there are closer bakeries but this is the best, by far, bar none. read more

We live in Florida and were planning an 80th birthday party for our mother in Glendale AZ. The owner was lovely to work with long distance and I didn't have any trepidation about how the cake would turn out, even with only describing what I wanted over the phone long distance! Prior to the new ownership, we would buy cookies for ourselves, and ship them out to out to friends who have moved out of New York too. My husband stopped in to buy fresh cookies to serve to company. when we tasted the cookies prior to serving them, you could tell they were already going stale . We always bought the chocolate dipped cookies with raspberry or apricot in them. The cookies were larger, but the texture was dry, and the jelly was hard and stale. The miniature Linzer tarts were hard and a dot of jelly that was stale. The red and green leaf cookies still tasted the same. The other two varieties we bought were good. I'm not sure why you would take over a bakery, change the recipes and present a subpar product when the bakery had such a thriving business . I presume the cookies were there since Saturday or Sunday and my husband bought them on Wednesday. I hope the ownership takes note of the other reviews and considers going back to the original recipes and throwing out the cookies when they're stale . read more

I've been coming here since 2010, Love what they've done with the place, super cute and the customer service is on point but the pastry's are just not what they used to be. The chocolate dipped butter cookies with frosting in the middle used to be my fave but now there's barely any frosting in them, almost undetectable and they are super dry. This is not a one off, I keep going back hoping that it was just an off day but this is the standard now they skimp on all the cookies with frosting and they don't seem as fresh as they used to. The cannolis are my biggest pet peeve don't bother making cannolis if you're going to fill them in advance. It's easy to tell a place that knows cannolis they are empty shells filled at order so the shell stays crisp. I'm sure their cannolis are delicious if you happen to get them super fresh immediately after made. Bummer, I used to be a regular here before they sold and the quality changed. I was even religious about voting them the best bakery every year. I keep going in with hope because, I assume, they are a small local owned business and I genuinely want to see them do well for my own cookie indulgence but it's been years now since they took over and I give up. One of the owners even randomly met my daughter and told her to come in for a free pastry and I appreciate that kindness she gave came home with some sweet blueberry bread thing not sure what it was called Even the free pastry was dry and the taste was bland. We spit out the bite and threw it away, it was that bad but it was when they first opened I had really hoped they would figure it out I've been rooting for them land I wanted to like them SO BAD! . I wouldn't suggest stopping here if you need something quickly though, it took me almost 20 minutes just to get my bagel toasted and my other pastries the ambiance is nice to meet with friends but I wouldn't suggest studying here or working from home here. We chose 3 different pasties but sadly only got to taste 1. 1 had bad strawberries and the other one had mold when we tore off a piece. It was clear as day the mold on the pastry. I've been coming here for the past 10 years or so and it's typically been great whatever I've bought. It's been a while since I've been here, and the lady helping me was asking me questions about how the petit fours tasted. I guess that should have been my first sign something had changed. The Custard tarts I bought were dried out and disgusting, the petit four I tried was pretty weird tasting and went in the trash, and the bite of red velvet cake I bought was disgusting as well. Coming here on yelp I see there was a change in ownership. Apparently it was a really bad change. Don't think I'll be back after this visit. read more
