We went on a Monday night so there was no wait and lots of empty tables. The booths are very close together leaving you little room and they move every time someone sitting on either aide moves. They are also straight back and uncomfortable. We were brought chips and salsa right away. Our food was also delivered pretty quickly. Appeared to be store bought taco shells that crumbled easily. Food wasn't bad, just not great. Nothing very memorable about this visit. read more

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! Actually, it was disgusting--the food and the service. We were there a few months ago, great waiter, good food. But yesterday, I ordered the $10.99 special for 2 tacos, beans and rice. I also asked if there were drink specials. The waiter had heavy Spanish accent so could not understand as he rattled off half a dozen without naming the cost. As it turned out, he charged the same as the menu, had to get the manager to adjust the price. Regarding the tacos, they should've been ashamed to serve them! Taco Tico or any fast food tacos would have been better. The shells were smaller than usual, there was barely any lettuce or cheese, just a small gob of hamburger at the bottom. Pathetic. I told them it was the worst I'd ever had. The manager said money was tight!? REALLY??? So why not make a decent taco and charge a bit more? Really sad. Regarding service, the waiter never came by. We had to wave him down to get more chips and salsa, and to get a to-go box and to get the check. He was always in a hurry though they were not that busy. We'll never go back. read more

I don't understand the bad reviews as I've been there several times since moving back to Wichita and El Agave is quickly becoming "my place" as far as Mexican restaurants go. I just moved from NC where I had a local Mexican spot that when I walked in the door, the knew my name, my beer of choice (Pacifico), my favorite spot, my favorite meal, and most importantly my favorite server. While I haven't been enough times to have that at El Agave yet, the food and drink are fantastic and service has been great. Now I just need my favorite server and it will feel like home! read more

My husband and I like to try different Mexican restaurants. We were glad to see this one open close to our home. We heard mixed reviews after they opened, so we decided to wait a few weeks for them to work out the kinks. We have been there 2 times in the last month and have been pleased both times. We were excited about this place opening especially since we frequent the one on the east side of town. This is the first time I have left a mexican restaurant wanting to taste some Mexican food! The taco, burrito and enchilada that we ate had virtually no flavor! The ground beef burrito was meat in a flour tortilla, same for the enchilada, ground beef in a corn tortilla! No cheese at all, the sauce on top is devoid of flavor, what gives. The place on the east side is very good. After reading the previous reviews we found the service fair, maybe some improvement over the last few weeks. Lets hope the food improves. Service has been getting worse every time we go in. It's just very conveniently located so we keep giving them a chance. The staff make us feel like we are bothering them by being there. Waited at the bar for over 2 hours without any service once. They do have one good waiter so you might get lucky if you get him. The food isn't bad either but we're not picky. Food is good. Nothing extravagant, but more authentic than most places. My problem is service. Time and time again the service has been incredibly lacking. Even when not busy, you have to wait an extended amount of time for service when seated and for your food. The Last time we were there, we stood waiting to be checked in for almost exactly 10 minutes and it was before 5 on a weekday as we always do. 3 young boys behind the bar and did not acknowledge us, a lady waited on the table directly behind the counter and did not acknowledge us when she was done talking to her table and a gentleman waiter across the room made eye contact with me and continued to walk away as well. Tonight we ordered a kids cheese quesadilla with added chicken. Anyone with kids knows that is exactly that. Chicken and cheese. They used fajita chicken and left large particles of the the onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. We also were charged double for 1 little bowl of hot sauce. Normally pay .99 cents and tonight we were charged for 2. Requested the cheese quesadilla with chicken be redone and it took 15 minutes to get it out. I have tried to continue to support the business although my husband has disagreed due to service and tonight was just finally the icing on the cake. I had to constantly get up from my table and get the server to ask for more chips or a refill. Finally decided to try it after several months and could've waited several more. Service was great, but the food was nowhere near my expectations with as busy as they seem. The appetizer, spinach dip, has way too much spinach dip and had a very thin consistency. The salsa was bland and very watered down, but the chips were great and might have been the best part of the meal. My daughter ordered from the Ala Carte menu, the tacos de carne asada, with chicken and corn tortillas and mentioned the chicken was bland and dry. I ordered the flautas, two pork two chicken, and also agree that the meat was very bland tasting. Next time I want flautas I will do my usual and make them myself. read more

Service was awful! Waited too long to be seated. We stayed being hopeful. After watching multiple people leave we gave up and left. The ladies at the front desk were friendly but seemed to have no clue what they were doing. They couldn't even quote us a timeframe of when we could be seated. Food was wonderful! Service has a lot to be desired. Like Karen M. stated, they just kind of slap your drinks and food in front of you. They were not busy at all....only 3 tables for a total of 8 people being waited on. After we ate, we had to wait & wait & wait for our ticket. My husband went on out to warm the car up and I stayed behind, still waiting for ticket. I finally stood up beside our booth and a waitress walked by me FOUR times and not once even looked at me, as I was standing there!! The bar tender finally ask me if he could help. He went and found our long lost waiter. When the waiter came out with our ticket was the FIRST time he smiled all night.....guessing he figured out it was "tip time"! Their food is good but the service? Not so much. Ordering take out is impossible 95% of the time. For some reason they can't answer the phone. Tonight the phone was picked up and immediately hung up. If you want to eat here, your best bet is to just go there and dine in. Pretty sad as they do have the best Mexican food in the Maize area. read more

We are not going there again. Waited for a table for 15 minutes while we saw several tables and booths that were available. Front girls have no clue. Finally seated and our waitress was not friendly until I asked for something and as she was walking away my son commented on her negative attitude. She came back acting overly nice to obviously make sure we gave her a tip. Ordered a drink from the bar, never got it, water glasses sat empty, took forever for food to be delivered, and cold when it finally did arrive. We still had cheese dip left and she asked if we wanted more chips. The lettuce tasted like dirt. Honestly the food isn't that great, if it was maybe you could overlook some of the other issues, but it isn't. Gave this place 2 chances, disappointed both times. Sunday night (7pm) with my wife and I can't remember the last time service at a restaurant was this bad. We waited about 15 minutes to be seated and then 11 minutes for her to even come say hi. We knew we were going to have limited interactions with her so we ordered our appetizer (cheese dip), drinks and food at the same time. 20 minutes later (and after asking the waitress about it) the cheese dip finally arrived. We had to wave her down for refills and silverware. Another 20 went by and our food was finally here. Had to get up and ask for tortillas to go with the carnitas. Nothing happened proactively here, all reactive. The food was good, but not worth the wait and poor service. I'd give this place six months to a year before they're out of business. They need a Gordon Ramsey intervention. Hire a front end manager to ensure things are moving fine and they'd have a place many people on the Westside wouldn't mind trying. If our waitress wasn't so worried about checking her Instagram and more concerned about topping off drinks and checking on her tables it would have been a completely different experience. read more
