Came here because the place we originally planned to go to had a long wait and we re hungry. We were not disappointed though! We both ordered the Tampaquinta....Tamponada....Tamborine...maaan, i dont even know how to say it but IT WAS DELICIOUS! Ramon (pronounced Rrrrrramon), was our waiter/server and he was excellent. Hospitable and helpful. He recommended the Tampiqueña (yes, I do really know what it is!), among other things and it was cooked well, and was filling. I cleaned the plate. The avocado sauce and the hot sauce was good too. The tamarind juice could use some work, but I guess that's just being nitpicky. It was a substitute because the horchata was not prepared yet, no big deal though. All around it was good food, good chef, good server, and decent atmosphere. The carne en su jugo is the best in Chicago. Service was service and there is ambiance but none of that matters because all you want is the beef soup. While eating this soup you will forget your troubles. It's transcendental. read more

I came because I heard good things about the carne en su jugo....I won't be back though. I don't know if this is the owner or manager, but they both went inside the women's bathroom for a while. Place is bad. Would only go here cause location and work being right down the block. I finally said enough of this place. When you get there takes a while for server to show. Once I finally get an order it takes them so long to get it out, bare in mind there was only like 2 other people at the time. Once finally food arrives it's either cold or over cooked. This is great spot for those at West Lake Hospital looking for a quick bite. I ordered the carne asada tacos and they did not disappoint! We stopped in on a Sunday a bit after lunchtime. It was crowded and the people seemed happy to be there. It took awhile for the waitress to come over, but she was nice. We had to ask for the chips and salsa. Once it arrived, the chips proved to be good, but the salsa needed more flavor. We added some of the hot sauce on the table to give it a kick. The menu had a variety of options and was well thought through. As I usually do at a Mexican place I'm trying out, I ordered the fajitas - beef. We also ordered quesadillas to munch on while we waited. The atmosphere was cool, with nice decorations and music. The fajitas finally arrived, but apparently, did not include rice, beans, sour cream, or guacamole. We even even had to remind the waitress to bring the tortillas. Unfortunately, the quesadillas arrived with the fajitas.. and were disappointing. One tortilla with cheese... even though we ordered sausage. My girlfriend had to go up to the kitchen, as we had trouble flagging down the waitress. This place is not large, by the way. She was told that she would have to order the toppings separately, which she did. We then had to decide if we wanted to wait for the fajita toppings, allowing the food to get cold, or dive in without them. Not ideal. While the salsa did not impress, we thought the fajita flavoring was good, although over cooked. Finally, the bill.... We had to ask for it twice, with far too much time in between. They charged us for the beans and rice as well as for the guacamole. There was also a mysterious "kitchen" charge. Not worth flagging down the waitress again for 50 cents. When it came time to sign, I noticed another line item: "cash discount" which was for $0.99. Except that since we paid with a credit care, they added $0.99 to the bill. The tip suggestions were based on the total price instead of the pre-tax total. The food was generally good, but they have some work to do with the service and organization. For a full place, they only had a woman and her daughter (?) serving tables. read more

Stopped here for lunch on a Saturday and suspected this probably wasn't the best place to eat in the neighborhood when I noticed it wasn't busy. The service was bad and the food was average at best. I ordered chilies rellenos, my wife ordered flutas, my son ordered a dish very similar to chicken cordon blue. It took a long time to receive our food considering there were only two other tables dining and a three guys at the small bar. The waitress was not interested in the tables as much as the guys at the bar flirting with her. But back to the food, nothing really stood out about the food. There was nothing memorable about the food. Honestly if not for the poor service I would give them three stars but the service dragged them down. So, I was skeptical about this place so we called ahead to ask a couple of questions so my wife called, who speaks Spanish, is asking the woman who answered would they be willing to accept more than one of the coupons for restaurant.com she said yes. So we went, the waitress was fine, sweet lady, we ordered drinks and our food, she promptly brought out our drinks and chips an salsa and than our food. my food wasn't great all and my wife said hers was ok, and we felt the same for our drinks, we didn't even finish them. so instead of complaining we thought that we would just leave it and just don't come back. so we go to pay and I am told that we can't use more than of the coupons and we have to pay the remaining balance, I explained to this rude guy that, we called and that's not what the lady said and he grabs my phone and point to where it says on the coupons only one and says its simple! So I said yea as simple as you training your employees correctly because that's not what she told me. He than says well maybe you should've talked to her in Spanish, and my wife and I both say we did, so I say well since I am not satisfied with my meal I would like to complain and he says about what? and I explained it to him, he says oh so since you have to pay now you don't like the food? I said I been didn't like the food, but since I didn't intend on paying anything I wasn't going to say anything, he says where in America do you get anything for free? I told him, I paid for my groupon so I did pay and I expect to be satisfied, and I am not paying for all of that food if I didn't like it... Yeah, it may feel like you are walking into a Tarantino film with the almost makeshift bar to the left and the linoleum flooring, but you only live once and the food is more hit than miss. The waitresses are rarely Hooter's quality and may not speak English, but they work hard for a living when they want to, which is most of the time, and you know that the tips they get are likely used wisely or add up to wire to family back in Mexico. Now for the food: it's pretty good. We continually get the steak taco dinner which has tasty rice and beans. Their enchiladas are also a winner. The must-not-miss is the guacamole that can be made to order (no salt, extra tomato or jalapeños) and is huge compared to the bird-drop size you get at higher-end Mexican restaurants (which should be an oxymoron). So buck-up non Hispanics, set expectations at an average but maybe very good meal, and if you see Tarantino there, offer him a beer and put a dollar in the juke box for some umpa happy ranchera music. read more

The skirt steak tacos are delicious and their guacamole is also outstanding. they make it all fresh and they also offer assorted shrimp and seafood soup. Very tasty as well. The prices are great and they have tv and music also, it is good for families and they are very friendly also, it is a casual attire location and parking is available on side streets. I love their chips, they are homemade there and taste great also. Enjoy! read more
