Love El Azteca! Never would have thought we could find Menudo and Barbacoa on the weekends! Very good and authentic and make this a regular stop for breakfast on the weekends. Additionally, when bite squad had gotten our order mixed up with someone else's the El Azteca owner took it upon herself to make sure our order was redelivered correctly. So my husbands co workers all rave about this place and we decided for the past two months to come and try this place out at least once. We drove out on Saturday and it was closed at 5pm (he's only off weekends) and so we went next door to Qdoba. That was our fault since we didn't check the hours they were open. Fast forward two weeks and we went out to try this place, it was a Sunday and they were closed. Of course we were being stupid again so today I made sure to double check the times before we head out. The man up front was super helpful to my husband who was asking a ton of questions. You know it's gotta be a good place when the guy up front knows his shit. My husband also asked if it was spicy and the guy said no. I can't eat anything remotely spicy, most of my meals are pretty much herbs over spices. Anyways my burrito, half way done and my tummy was telling me "No more." My lips wanted to just burn off and the back of my throat was on fire. Same goes for my husband, who could eat somewhat spicy stuff. We took the rest home and it's been 5 hours already. And we just finished the rest, I should've listened to my tummy because at this point it was pissed off and wanted to kill me. I know this may be tmi, but thank god we have 2 bathrooms in this house. (Sorry if you're reading this and eating or think about eating soon) Overall, this place was delicious but my husband and I won't be returning. You get a good amount for what you pay for and everything was delicious but us weaklings can't handle it. The cranea asada fries I got were utter crap for $12. No cheese, have to pay extra for sour cream, guacamole and pico de gio, small amount plus crappy fries. These are worth $3 if that that's how crappy it is. Highly don't recommend. The meat is practically pulled pork and not even cooked all the way. I hope I don't get sick. read more

Mexican food in Minot just got interesting! If you were to ask me right here, right now, what my favorite food is, I would say hands-down, without hesitation -- Mexican food. From tacos to tamales and all the mole and empanadas in-between! (insert mental image of Homer Simpson drooling over doughnuts here.) Maybe it's because it's the one food I miss the most. The fact that I have now lived nearly a 3-day drive from anything remotely resembling Mexican food for roughly 4 years has often been the greatest cause for homesickness. (Caveat...second only to missing my good friends.) So maybe this review lacks my usual quasi-objectiveness, but can you blame me? Holy Mole Bat-hombres! Minot has it's first "hint" of a taqueria! Sure, El Azteca isn't fancy. Not by any stretch of the imagination and yes, as another reviewer pointed out, they aren't exactly environmentally friendly with their abundant use of plastic-ware and Styrofoam containers, and not to discount the other reviewer entirely -- but c'mon, Q'Doba?! That's not even Mexican food! I'm not going to defend El Azteca's lack of ambiance, or the somewhat slow service (hopefully a fact that will evolve as they get better traction with time.) I initially came in with the expectation of a sit down restaurant, but quickly realized my expectation was way off target. For folks who have never experienced a taquieria, perhaps I should explain that a taqueria is kinda of like "take-out/to-go food" with the option of pigging out onsite, and El Azteca is likely the closest thing to it that you will find this far north of the border. Unlike the" Land of Plentiful Taquerias," and perhaps because outside dining in this remote outpost of the "Great Frozen Tundra of the Northern Midwest" is just as rare as Mexican food, the venue of El Azteca is essentially an indoor taqueria and getting your food packaged to go should be expected. The upside to this is that here in Minot, we can look forward to some Mexican food basics without getting frostbite during the 7-8 months of Winter we all know and love. So ambiance, plastic-ware, Styrofoam and service aside, let's look at what you can hope to expect. A limited menu that focuses on tacos, burritos, tamales, some mid-west favorites such as flautas and chimichangas, and OMG! homemade salsa! (not from a can!!) and real homestyle refried beans, real grilled steak, chicken and pork. Okay, I am not very impressed with the Mexican rice, but in all honesty - pfft! If you insist your burrito can't exist without it, I will also likely assume that you are ordering it with ground beef wrapped in My Family brand flour tortillas and I will simply chalk your faux-pas up to your limited experience with Mexican food, (and as much as Taco John's insists to suggest otherwise, Ole's are tater tots and NO, you will not ever find them on the menu of any Mexican restaurant.) Some tips... - if you have no clue what to order, ask for a menu, step aside and let more decisive customers proceed ahead of you -- this will greatly improve the speed of service and cut down on the length of the line during peak times - If you want to know what is best to order, just ask for the daily special and you will never be disappointed (a fact I learned from many family owned and operated Mexican restaurants) - Skip the chips (sad to admit, you can get better at the grocery store) BUT don't skip the salsa! Red or Green, you can't fail -- unless your idea of the perfect salsa is El Paso - With cheese? YES, por favor, gracias! (please and thank you in Spanish) - plate vs. ala carte? (side of beans and rice or not) - Burrito plate? Unless you think of your burrito as some sort of gigantic Americanized enchilada, skip the sauce and order ala carte -- in all honesty, a burrito was never intended to be eaten with a fork and knife (besides, as the other reviewer was keen to point out - plastic forks and knives are not very forgiving to even the slightest bit of force) - Got a hankerin' for taquitos but they aren't on the menu? Just order the flauta plate with everything -- it's as close as you will get to the real deal. I'm not implying that El Azteca is the best Mexican food I've ever had, and the prices are a little steep considering the offerings, but after 4 years of deprivation which have only been partially satiated by Chile Verde, El Azteca is a welcome addition. Just skip the plastic-ware and take it to go. Unlike the other reviewer, I am sincerely rooting for El Azteca success and will happily indulging whenever I find homesickness rearing its ugly head. Viva El Azteca! Even a hint of a taqueria is better than the absence of one -- and Oh! How absence has made the heart grown fonder. read more

This place is fabulous. The food is absolutely delicious. Think Albuquerque meets LA. I have nothing but good things to say about the ENTIRE menu, yes I have had it all. El Azteca is a great taqueria. If you are looking for some authentic Mexican food here in Minot this is the place. It does not compare to the modern mainstream type of American Mexican restaurants but think of those hole in the walls in Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio. Those are usually the best and for North Dakota, this is one of be better ones. The restaurant is based around the "to go" order as mentioned in the other reviews. The plastic forks and styrofoam containers highlight this place is a ma and ps restaurant where a family is building their dreams. La comida es excellente (for its category). The salsa verde was great! Make sure you order the homemade salsa. The rice and beans were great! Well cooked and tasted so good! The customer service was good and extremely friendly. They even worked with me while I ordered in Spanish. Only bad side for the first visit: the prices were a little high but can be expected for Minot. Overall very good! read more

Absolutely love this place - the staff is extremely friendly and the service is wonderful. When they are busy (and they get really busy at lunchtime) it may take a few extra minutes to get your order but it is 100% worth it. The lunch plates are great huevos rancheros are EXCELLENT; the burritos are great and HUGE - if you have a smaller appetite I would suggest going with the smaller size because even the smaller size is HUGE. Really good fresh ingredients, pico and guac are made homemade as is pretty much everything else. Best Mexican I have had in a very long time. Bravo! Stopped there during the lunch hour. Sign on door said we had to wear a mask, got inside and the three workers were NOT wearing masks! The worker to take my order was eating and didn't stop, so the other worker had to take my order. Reviews said they were so friendly?, but no one was smiling or didn't seem to care if they had a customer or not. Food was not impressive, just looked like out of a can. Really really great food. We've had Mexican in California, Arizona and Chicago and this can stack up to some of our favorites. The shredded chicken is amazing. Chicken burrito or tacos are fantastic. The burritos here amazing, I love both the chicken and steak - the breakfast steak one is also very good! Make sure to add potatoes to your breakfast one. The shredded cheese they use is so delicious and they don't short change you here, you get a lot of food. :) I live on the South side of town and drive up here quite often just for a burrito. All the staff are always very friendly and hard working. The inside is a little outdated but please don't let that discourage you! This place is right next door to Qdoba and Qdoba doesn't even hold a candle to how good this place is. Always shop local!!!! read more

I haven't been impressed with their food or especially their customer service. I had a burrito that had "fresh" chilies that just truly and honestly tasted canned. I would be far more willing to give their food another try (it has had good reviews both here and elsewhere) if it weren't for the equally poor costumer service. They made a mistake on my order and made me pay to fix it. When I finally got the food I wanted the serving size was small. In addition, our waiter charged the person I was out to lunch with $0.30 for a glass for water. It's not the price that's a problem but the fact that they are charging me for something I could get free anywhere else, including at sit down restaurants. Overall the staff just seemed uninterested in the fact they had customers. If you want something for a lunch break at work I would recommend somewhere with nicer wait staff and where you get more food for your money. read more

Not overly impressed. Ordered green chile burrito plate. When the gal was putting it together she told me there was no more green chile. I asked why i was sold green chile and she just shrugged.....then proceeded to ask my husband if he wanted green or red chile sauce on his chimi?!?!?!? Paper plates, plastic utensils. Very slow service. Food was good but not good enough for me to return and deal with disposable cutlery. Been there twice. Won't go back. First time was within the first week of opening and the wait about 45 min for bland food. I wasn't quick to judge because it was the opening week. The second time was the wait time was better but still lack luster. I got the chili relleno burrito. The chili rellano was soggy and tasteless. The rice in the burrito was mush and way to much beans. The proportions was way off too much rice and beans and whomever rolled it did it sloppy so it was a mess I couldn't eat it without a fork. To top it off there was a toothpick in the burrito. Have had the breakfast burritos here a couple of times. The food is made fresh to order which is always great. The burritos are huge so you definitely leave feeling that you're getting your money's worth. With that said, the prices are in-line with that. For my family to get 4 burritos cost about $27. The first time I came here about 4 months ago I had those little carne asada tacos you know like the ones you can get in Southern California they were excellent and had a real carne asada my second time visiting was about a month ago and I got tacos again however they didn't have carne asada on them so I went back a couple of weeks ago and asked for carnitas and they gave me some slop ass red wet pork stuff that I didn't even eat and when I confronted him this last time just a couple of days ago I asked him if it was carne asada meat, again, and he lied to my face. I am from Southern California and admit I can be very snobby about Mexican food. Of all the places Minot has to offer, El Azteca is by far one of the best. The food is amazing and the staff is friendly. I am a huge fan of the Chili Relleno Burrito, but even the BRC (Bean, Rice and Cheese) is amazing. The Flautas, aka taquito's are also mouth-watering. My biggest hope is that Qdoba opening next door doesn't hurt this business because while I too am a general fan of Qdoba the authenticity of El Azteca is second to none in Minot. read more

I just want to say one thing. This reminds me of home. The food is really authentic to what a Mexican restaurant is like.
