A new place for me. Al pastor was amazing, but sadly it went downhill from there. Lengua was bland and a bit disappointing. Huevos con chorizo had a bit of a weird taste. The costilla tacos was very messy (swimming in green chile) and also not the best to have to eat through the bones. Weird in a taco. I was really looking forward to the zucchini flower quesadilla, and it was good. But not great. Guacamole was the star of the order. Won't order from here again, too many other Mexican places that taste much better than that. read more

Lent always brings on the challenge of finding good seafood at a reasonable price but El Balcon hit it out of the park! I had the shrimp in tequila which was at least ten good sized shelled shrimp with a large portion of rice and Texas toast. All that for $16.95. And we shared 4 shrimp empanadas which were $11-delicious! My friends both ordered the regular shrimp cocktail which was $13, I think. It was a good size too. Highly recommend! read more

Place was good! Little bit of a hike but good! They are in a little strip mall and at the time it was not busy so parking was a breeze. Got seated and serviced right away! Just loved the ceviche, was a mix of fish and shrimp, real tasty! I had grilled fish which was good. My buddy had the mixed seafood and he said it was a little over cooked and not that spicy but otherwise they had cocktails and beer, and prices were not bad. The food was delicious. The steak tacos were fresh tasting and flavorful. The chicken quesadilla was bursting with chicken and cheese. The texture of the quesadilla tortillas was different but appeared to be homemade. The salsa and chips were the perfect combination of crispy, a little salty, full of flavor and a little spiciness. The plain kids meal cheese quesadillas could use some improvement. My son ate two of the quesadillas and the next day I pan fried the one left with a little bit of butter. It tasted much better that way. The rice and beans were okay. The beans had more flavor than the rice but they are meant to be eaten on the side. Overall good experience and food! With so many places to get a great taco for #nationaltacoday, I thought I'd try somewhere new. El Balcon has been on my radar for a bit. Being my first time here, I grabbed a menu to give it a look and didn't realize they had table service, until a large group came in behind me moments later. That group was approached immediately with chips and salsa. Eventually someone did walk over with some chips and salsa and asked if I was eating in. I indicated it was my first time and wanted to look over the menu. I went for a trifecta of asada, chicken and al pastor tacos. I added beans and rice for $1.50. The chips were terrible and appears they toss some new chips in with what ever the last table left behind. Salsa wasn't anything special and neither bottled sauce has heat. I ended up bringing the al pastor and most of the beans and rice home. I find it really awkward to have to go to the register with out a bill in hand. I don't see a return visit, servers weren't attentive and I was never really sure who my server was? Receipt doesn't have a way to leave a tip either, very strange set up. read more

Authentic Mexican food in an informal setting. Friendly, quick service. Love the complimentary nachos and 3 different salsas. Lime margarita was delicious as was the garlic, pan-sautéed salmon. Unfortunately the grilled asparagus were thin, tough and hard to eat. The mushrooms, rice and corn tortillas saved the day though. Overall, very tasty and reasonably priced. read more

After looking for a different Mexican restaurant than the ones we frequent, we decided to try out El Balcon this past weekend. First impression was good - attentive servers, fairly full tables and a good-sized menu. We tried the El Cantarito cocktail, which was nice, but a bit pricey. We ordered tacos and the Milanesa de Pollo (a breaded chicken breast). The portions were large, dinner-sized and the presentation fairly pleasant. However, the quality of the food left something to be desired. As long as the taco tortillas were warm, they were palatable. Similarly, the breaded chicken was almost pleasantly crunchy and mostly tender. But as we continued to eat, and the food became cooler, the tortillas turned harder and rubbery, as did the chicken. To be fair, and to give credit where it's due, the service was stellar. Our server was friendly and helpful, and multiple servers made sure to stop by throughout the meal to ask if we needed anything. We ended up taking the leftover chicken dish home. The following day, the tortillas emerged from their wrapped packaging feeling like rubber sheets. They were very similar to the packaged, stamped, processed rubber discs that are sold cheap in grocery stores. A quick warmup on the pan somewhat restored them, but that didn't last - they just became stiff and dry after a minute. Similarly, the chicken behaved the same way. I made them into tacos, with the included lettuce and refried beans, and tried to salvage the meal with a liberal drizzle of Sriracha sauce. I was able to finish half the meal before I finally gave up. So, in retrospect, the experience wasn't satisfying, and certainly not worth the price we paid. As much as I like to suport local small businesses, I doubt I'll be going back to this restaurant. read more

Worst Experience!! We ordered 3 huaraches for pick up, however when we arrived home one of the huaraches was plain and the other two with only tomatoes and a single piece of lettuce (we ordered them with everything on them). When we called the restaurant, the waitress told us we could go back and pick up the lettuce and tomatoes if we'd like since it was "free." We were disappointed in the fact that our order was already messed up so we agreed on returning the food for a refund. However our experience only got worse when we arrived back at the restaurant. When we got there FOUR waitresses came out and began inspecting the food and asked "you brought it ALL back right?" First they mess up our order and now they were treating us as if we were scamming them or trying to steal the food. We did receive our refund however we did not receive a single apology over the phone or at the restaurant. read more

It is truly regrettable that I never visited this place while in its old location. I spent many years missing out on the best, most affordable, and authentic Mexican food Bolingbrook has to offer. Set in the strip mall directly across from Menards, the place is still pretty much brand new, with shiny floors, tables, and semi-uncomfortable fiberboard booth seating. They do a fair dine-in business, but totally kill it with take out! We were here on a Sunday, and I am not exaggerating when I say I saw at least 20 gallons of menudo walk out the door in an hour. Although I am personally not a fan of menudo, I have a deep afinity for their Al Pastor quesadillas (tender, juicy, flavorful pork, with lettuce, sour cream, and cheese) and guacamole (huge portion with a perfect mix of ingredients) with warm, homemade chips. The girls working here are also a highlight of any visit. Always friendly, and very quick. read more

I thought this was a new Bolingbrook dining destination, but it turns out it's been on the second floor of a nearby aging strip mall for eight years. The new location is nice, if a bit Spartan-little in terms of décor and/or character-but it's new, it's clean, and it has a family feel. And the place was packed with families the night we visited. We were the only family that spoke English as our first language, so you know the food is authentic! The carne asada torta was wonderful, the el pastor tacos were very close to the ones at ZacaTaco (which imho were the best around), and my daughter's cheese quesadilla was reportedly mighty fine. There is no alcohol served here :(, so bring your flask, or teetotal that night. read more

I really enjoyed my experience, food, staff, and restaurant and recommend any locals to get a meal asap! I don't usually get 2 different items when eating Mexican but wanted to try more than one and got both an ASADA BURRITO and CHICKEN TACO! The burrito was tasty and the veggies fresh but I loved the Chicken taco best! Oh ya, I loved the rice water here more than most! In a word: bland. So many good reviews on Yelp. We were in the area and check Yelp for local joints for lunch. So many good reviews. Why? Tried three tacos: steak, al pastor, and carnitas. Of the three, the carnitas at least had some flavor. The beef seemed tough, and the al pastor was non-descript. The service wss also lacking. They were more interested in watching the soap opera on tv than serving customers. For our drinks we ordered cola products and given the choice of bottle or can. Ok....we chose bottles. They were delivered along with straws. The straws were shorter than the bottle. Um.....kinda tricky. They were Mexican Coca Cola products, meaning they were made with sugar rather than corn syrup. Sadly that may have been the highlight of the meal. Don't bother. We won't be back. read more

Everything on the menu was so damn cheap, as if they weren't adjusted for inflation. Got a Cubana torta and carne asada huarache to go. It was amazing how much was piled onto my torta, as it contained milanesa (breaded steak), scrambled eggs, ham, length-sliced hotdogs, onions, tomatoes, avocado, refried beans, and cheese; all that for $6. Wish I could sing similar praises for the huarache as it was just steak on a tortilla with melted cheese and nothing else, wished it would have had lettuce, tomato, onions, cactus, something else added to it as it hardly had any flavor to it. Finally a decent Mexican food eatery in the area. The place is clean, food is authentic and prepared hot and fresh. As basic as that sounds some restaurants fail to deliver that. The salsa was the ish and sauces were great compliments to the tacos. There are a few qwirks about the place, but otherwise El Balco is going in the weekly lunch rotation. I would recommend sitting at a table because the booths are weird in the fact that they are angled at an oblique angle which makes you sit and eat at an acute angle to compensate. The chips are very good! Homemade and not oversalted. Only gripe was the first basket we decimated was all broken pieces. This was remedied with the second helping. Honestly I cannot come up with any deal killers with this place. Great food and good service at a reasonable price. You cant ask for anything more when it comes to casual dining. read more

The new location seems much nicer than the old one, but the food isn't much to write home about. The salsa has virtually no flavor and the chorizo quesadilla was about the same. The service was good enough. They were friendly but the didn't have enough people to run the front of house and carry out business at the same time so things got cold waiting in the window.
