I went back and forth on four or five stars on this visually and acoustically vibrant, fun, lively cantina alto vibe setting--its new location. I at first suffered sticker shock--no way was I paying supper club prices just for a Mexi-riche sheen! I ate at this place at its previous location just up the street minus the designer packaging, and though ok, that experience did not justify the prices I was seeing on this new menu. I may have been a bit hasty though. They not only stepped up their visual/environment game, but their food game as well--at least on this visit. My aperitivo was a frozen mango and rum to enjoy with crisp chips and three types of salsa. The main dishes were deliciosísimo. Yes, you will pay several more pesos (which is still a bit of a sore spot); however, the portions are more than ample-enough for two. Our server was attentive, polite, efficient, and very pleasant. We got a referral from another business in the area. I'll tell you, it didn't disappoint! The chips and salsa were very good to start. Then we had to order some table side guacamole which was so rich and delicious. Then we ordered our entrees. The California Steak Burrito. This burrito had a sauce on it that had a hint of lime that was so delicious and the portion size was large. The presentation looked desirable as well. The two tacos with rice and beans were a hit as well. The first bite of the Pastor taco had a bite of pineapple that made it so tasty and delicious, but that was the only bite. Not saying the remaining taco wasn't bad. The Carne Asada tacos though, this one was on point with every bite. I'm not sure what was crunchy, but I just couldn't get enough so we ordered four more to-go. Man those were so delicious! Don't skip on those! Hands down those flavors in that Carne Asada tacos made it the best tacos I've even eaten. The service was great and he was very attentive. The restaurant was decorated nicely. Oh man, where to start! The chips were hot and crunchy and went well with all of the salsa served. Then we had to order the tableside guacamole and it did not disappoint. Next up was our meals. We ordered the California Steak Burrito and a Pastor and Carne Asada taco with rice and beans. Because the Carna Asada taco was so good we ordered more to go. I love the new Mago space! It's so bright, open and airy. They still have some of the luchador masks on the walls which I later found out that people are able to purchase! I went in for a lunch meeting and the staff were super patient with us since we were talking, catching up and didn't get to look at the menu until later. We got the table side guacamole which they pull out the cart and they'll prepare the guacamole in front of you based on your spice preference. They had so many food options and specials but I opted for the arroz con pollo and it's nice that it came out like a pot pie! I also had their horchata mocktail which was delicious and refreshing. We came here for an unexpected dinner to get out of a snow storm. We were so relieved that Mago was open when most establishments decided to close that day. Our server was adorable, kind and attentive. We enjoyed the complimentary salsas. We passed up on the table side gauc on this visit, but will surely try it next time. Empanadas were my favorite, next the tacos - generously portioned but not overstuffed. Others in our party ordered the burritos which looked phenomenal and they had half to take home for a second meal. Honorable mention to the delicious Paloma, as well. We stopped in for lunch on our way home on a Tuesday afternoon, there were only one or two or diners there. We started with some margaritas and guac from their table side cart. I had a La Placita which was mango and ancho liqueur....very very good. The guac was fine, a bit overpriced for what you got but it was good. They have 3 table salsa's a mild tomato based, a very good salsa verde and a hotter chipotle/habanero maybe. Again, all good we enjoyed them all. The waitress was very pushy about everything, specials, drinks, appetizers, suggesting the most expensive items, it was a bit off putting. I got carne asada enchiladas with salsa verde, I love salsa verde. My wife got tacos, Shrimp, Al pastor and baja fish taco. She likes them all, their sides are pretty large, I got some really excellent green rice and she got black beans. First time eating at Mago since they moved to their new location. It's beautiful. What a difference! The old location was dark and dingy, crowded, and noisy. Now it's well-lit, open and spacious, and the noise level is perfect. Chips and three different salsas arrived moments after we arrived. Alexia, our server, was amazing--super sweet and attentive. Mago is our Number One restaurant! Everything on the menu is delicious but don't miss the mole. Every day they make FIVE different kinds of mole, which no one else does because it takes so much time. Our favorite is mole de coco on salmon but you can put any mole on any type of meat. This visit I challenged my husband to order something new. We celebrated our 24-year anniversary at Mago Grill & Cantina and overall had a great experience. The new space feels more open and noticeably less loud, which made for a relaxed dinner. They start you with chips and a variety of salsas... all delicious, with the green being the standout. We ordered the empanadas and mixed flavors: ground beef picadillo with chimichurri and chicken tinga with roasted tomato salsa. Both were very good. The only confusing part was the $2 upcharge for mixing flavors, which we didn't initially notice on the menu. They were served on one plate with sauces placed in front of each empanada, but the empanadas didn't correspond to the sauces, and they were accidentally swapped without us realizing until we were almost done eating them. For entrées, the Enchiladas De Hongo were excellent, and the Mole de Cacahuate with sautéed chicken breasts was rich and flavorful. The only real disappointment was that the reservation noted it was an anniversary celebration, but it wasn't acknowledged. Nothing special was expected but a simple mention would have been appreciated. Will we be back? Absolutely. The food remains consistently great. read more

We stopped by for a last minute date and it was crowded on a Saturday night. Luckily, we were able to find seats together at the bar. The bartender took great care of us! We ordered a margarita flight to share, el jefe, la bruja. And la Reina. All were delicious, not too strong, not too sweet, just right! First time coming here, me and my wife wanted to check out a sit-down restaurant. She was mainly interested in the vegan options that were available to her. Upon entering I didn't even realize how hot it was inside, I'm not sure if the air conditioning was broken. It was really cool having tableside guacamole being made in front of us I've never had that before. We got our drinks though we didn't even order anything alcoholic we ordered a mocktail but for some reason we were charged an alcohol consumption fee of some sort on the bill which was strange because there's obviously no alcohol in our drinks. I enjoyed the theme of this place as well, they feature a bunch of Rey Mysterio masks that I noticed on my way to the restroom which is pretty cool. Restrooms were clean and fairly taken care of. I can also tell they throw tables anywhere to get the most customers inside so we were super close to the people next to us - to the point you couldn't move past without brushing against the other table- and had a wall on the other side of us. I ordered a side of guac just to order the fajitas and them to come with guac but wasn't advised of that by the waitress. Came in on August 18th 2026 to this location to celebrate my father's birthday. I do not plan on ever going back. We received horrible service from a waitress named Rea. The waitress looked more interested in talking to her male coworker than attending us at our table.They automatically charge you tip so it makes more sense why the waitress didn't care to assist us.Also when we were done paying and heading out, the waitress then came out with a dessert and a birthday candle... As soon as we're at the exit. My family and I felt so embarrassed. It doesn't feel too great being the center of attention when you're walking out the door.They also stopped one of my family members at the door asking them if it was his birthday. Came with a fairly large group for dinner with colleagues, and the service was excellent--our server was super attentive. Mago has always had great food and top notch drinks, making it one of our staples. But since moving next door to the bigger location the experience has gone downhill in quality and consistency. This weekend we visited as walk-ins for a late dinner around 9. In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, there was a live "band" playing music and singing. I'm all for live music, but this was so poorly done that I almost couldn't believe it. The volume was so high that musical notes were distorted, my Apple Watch constantly flashed dangerous decibel warnings, and conversation was totally impossible. Vocals were inaudible and the keyboardist seemed to be learning on the fly. Again - live music is a great addition to the dining experience, but this was complete amateur hour. Mago really needs to contract with a sound person before ever doing this again. I'm not being dramatic - this was amazingly bad. Our party left before ordering, but not before our would-be waiter approached and greeted us with "do you like pork chops?" He then took the next five minutes shouting at me about I must try the pork chop tonight because it's amazing... and it sold out last night! For a place where the bill often ends up at several hundred dollars, this car salesman schtick is tacky and disappointing. Worst experience yet. We want to love you, Mago, but you're making it really hard. read more

I've been here a few times and always enjoyed the food. The most recent time I went on a Saturday night with a party of 7. They indicated they wouldn't do separate checks, and honestly good for them to have that policy, as I know how annoying it was as a server to do 10 separate checks. The tacos are ale carte, so I mixed and matched. I got one steak, one pastor, and one shrimp. All were very good, but I liked steak and shrimp the most. The server asked if we wanted shots, and we got huge rock glasses as "shots." That was a little much after a couple of margaritas. I thought they mixed the guacamole right at your table, but maybe that's only when it's not a busy/ crowded night. I recommend making a reservation: it gets pretty busy. One negative is that there's not much space to stand and wait when you walk in. read more

Both sauces were fantastic. We had 1 collab beer and a Mezcal Old Fashioned. Both hit the spot. Their space is packed in fairly tight but not too bad. We were immediately seated at a table inside the restaurant. We don't believe there was any wait for a table just before 1pm. We ordered table side guacamole, an order of chicken fajitas which comes with rice and beans and your choice of flour or corn fajitas. We also ordered 1 chorizo taco and added rice and beans. Chips and 3 types of salsa are also provided with your meal. The green salsa is our go too. The table side guac can be prepared mild, medium, or hot. We went with medium and it was fantastic. Our meals arrived at our tables fast! The chicken fajitas is a big portion. The chicken was moist, flavorful, and so good! We love the spices, peppers, onions, and pico that accompany the chicken. My wife loved the chorizo taco but found the chorizo had a weird texture but good flavor. The rice and black beans are good. The rice has green beans, corn, and carrots added into it. We ordered extra flour tortillas for 2 dollars. We took some of the fajitas home with us in a container. We travel 2 hours from central Illinois to visit this mago location. We absolutely love the food and service here. As our waitress said this is a "bougie" Tex-Mex style restaurant. It is not cheap! Our lunch was pricey but it is worth it with exception to the surcharge. We want to see mago around forever and we hope the food and service stay consistently good. What a great dining experience! My dragon fruit margarita was very tasty. I was soooo excited about the vegetarian options and they didn't disappoint. I had one roasted poblano and one portobello taco. Both were good, but the roasted poblano was exceptionally good. They give you 3 sauces with chips. That green sauce is to die for! This flavor of salsa is thee best I've ever had!!! The inside comes alive with all the colors. My waiter was very nice and entertained all my questions of the most popular menu options.
