If you're someone who grew up with mom saying "Tenemos frijoles en la casa!", this is NOT the place for you. I am not from the Midland area but my fiancé and I came here for a wedding from the DFW area. When you walk in, the restaurant looks like your typical mom and pop Mexican restaurant. There's sombreros on the wall, giant plants in the middle of the seating area, and plastic veggies everywhere. They even play authentic music! I ordered the chilaquiles verdes and my fiancé ordered the burrito asado and the potato and egg burrito. When I got the chilaquiles verdes, the very oily tortilla chips were smothered in a green sauce that tasted like fake enchilada sauce with a bunch of cheddar and mozzarella cheese but no egg! Traditionally, chilaquiles come with an egg. It's what makes it breakfast food. I personally like a meat with my chilaquiles as well since my mom would serve us chilaquiles with shredded chicken when I was growing up. So I requested chorizo but was told they were all out of chorizo and I had to settle with ham. It was honestly so disappointing for me. I felt like they made the sauce spicy to hide the fact that it tasted like OTB's enchilada sauce and we all know that's not authentic Mexican food. The potato and egg burrito was delicious despite the fact that it came with jalapeños although we were not told it would have jalapeños (my fiancé hates spicy food). As far as the burrito asado... Well... Let's just say I don't think this restaurant knows what asado means. My fiancé opened the burrito worried that it would have jalapeños just like his potato and egg burrito but instead we found some type of pulled meat smothered in what looked like red enchilada sauce and jalapeño seeds. As a Latina, I was offended at the fact that they would call this an asado burrito. For those that don't know, asado in Spanish means grilled. This was definitely not a meat that was grilled but instead was destroyed by what tasted like the red version of the fake enchilada sauce I had with my chilaquiles. I only give this restaurant 2 stars because they were nice enough to accommodate a replacement burrito for my fiancé so that he wouldn't have to eat whatever his asado burrito really was. read more

The best Mexican food that I have found in W. Texas. Their enchiladas with green chili and fried eggs in top (#10 on their breakfast menu) is the best dish that I have eaten at any restaurant in the Midland/Odessa area. If there is one resource in Midland more abundant than petroleum, it's Tex-Mex food. Seriously, you can't swing a dead cat in this town without hitting a Mom and Pop Mexican food joint. And on the south side of town, it may indeed be possible to leap from the roof of one Tex-Mex eatery to another and manage to traverse the entire breadth of the city. Having said that, El Banquete is my personal favorite and a great place for lunch. As is proper for the paradigm, tostadas and salsa are brought to the table prior to ordering. I suggest waiting until your drink order has arrived before indulging, however, as this salsa has an agenda. Made fresh daily, variances in individual chiles mean that this salsa may run the gamut from "Holy Crap! I can't feel my feet!" to "Raiders of the Lost Ark, melt your face off." On my last visit, after one chip doused in the seeded lava, I went on a brief vision quest wherein the ghost of Jimi Hendrix told me I was not necessarily stoned but beautiful. As far as the food goes, everything I've tried has been incredible. The chile rellenos are an unbattered variety, which I initially found odd, but have since grown fond of. The enchiladas are as good as any I've found anywhere. One combo plate features chile verde and asado, both of which are flavorful,fresh, and remarkably spicy. In fact, spiciness is a common factor to most dishes on the menu, so, much as I love this place and its food, I cannot recommend it to those with delicate palettes or to young children. To those with more adventurous tongues, however, I say "Have at thee!" Bear in mind, this is strictly a breakfast and lunch joint. Don't be dissuaded by the realtor's sign in the parking lot. The family is looking at finding a location with more parking. This place is as good as it gets for fulfilling Tex-Mex. read more

So I tried this place out. The restaurant is small and dark and gloomy. The waitresses are not very personal and we did not get much a welcoming vibe or greeting, they just told us to sit anywhere. You have to seat yourself. The food comes out quick though. The chips were good and yes the salsa was spicy, but didnt have much flavor. Like it was missing some more tomatoes. I ordered a chicken salad, they do not serve it in a taco bowl or shell which sucks. It was okay, I had better. They only give you guacamole on it no sour cream. Food was good I asked for water and was looked at like a bum. I am a diabetic. I finished the small bowl of salsa still had some chips. Asked for more salsa for the remaining chips. I got the salsa finished the meal got the check and noticed that the restaurant/waitress had added an additional charge of $1.50 for the extra 2 ounces of salsa! I have never been to any other Mexican restaurant in my 54 years of life where I was forced to pay for what any other establishment would have not given a second thought. Although I did feel the food was delicious their apparent need to charge for such a mundane item in my opinion really seems extremely greedy for profit. I realize from personal experience in the restaurant industry that sodas are indeed a good source of profit for the restaurant however not everyone should need have them for various reasons ie diabetes in my case. It is a shame that after 3 years in Midland TX I finally think that I found a good Mexican food restaurant only to be charged for a lousy tiny bit of salsa. I will still visit again but sincerely hope that I will not be charged extra for a refill of salsa. If that happens again then I will not return! Principals before personalities.
