I will go to great lengths to try new taco places. So it was inevitable I paid a visit to El Califas, which has been featured on Yelp's Top 100 list for the Bay. I got the grilled chicken tacos and got the hot and mild salsas on the side. The quantity of chicken was great. The taste could be better, however, as most of it ended up coming from the salsas I poured on them. The tortillas were high-quality and flavorful. I could just eat them with the salsas they provide. Both the hot and mild salsas packed great flavor. The service was friendly and efficient! The tacos are reasonably priced. I'm sure the other meats are more flavorful and popular. Definitely pay them a visit if you can. read more

Went here for a quick bite to eat and this place did not disappoint! The staff member who took our order and crafted our food was able to answer all our questions and get the food out to us quickly. I got the super burrito. The carne asada meat was full of flavor, but I would like to see slightly more balanced ingredients. I would not hesitate to get again though. My car was running on empty on a Thursday afternoon and so was my stomach, so when I stopped to get gas at Valero in MV on my way to getting food elsewhere, I couldn't resist picking up something from El Califas whose food truck caught my eye at the corner of the gas station. It was an impulse buy!! I've been a fan of their food truck in Sunnyvale for the longest time, but it's been a while, and it was too convenient to pass up on. I ordered the carne asada quesadilla, and it was ready in less than 5 minutes, with great service from staff. It tasted a bit different here, but it might be cuz I got the milder sauce, rather than the spicier green sauce I used to get at the Sunnyvale location (turns out, the spicier sauce is more delicious to me). The quesadilla I got last week was still saucy and cheesy. I tried it right away while it was hot and freshly made, with flavorful steak and melted cheese oozing out of the grilled tortilla. So this place serves some not so typical tacos, not Taco Bell and not chipotle either. Authentic seasoned Al pastor, asada and chicharrón (not too common but authentic) with a tortilla twist. When yall order the staff will ask : with cheese? No it is not a gringa or a quesadilla. Well picture a mini quesadilla with the taco fixings on top of it. For yall Mexico City folk who make another taco with the under tortilla, this won't work order without cheese if that's you. So the Cheese is a third layer on a taco. Now here's an example of how NOT to provide good customer service: I tried tacos from this truck last week, they were good and I decided to come back today. 2:15, after the lunch rush, there was literally no one else there. Like most food trucks there are two windows. Some trucks use only one window and have the other window sealed, some trucks have you go to one window to order, and the other window to pick up your order. On one window, this truck has a sign with the word "Order", and above it two words "Pick Up". (There was no sign at the other window.) This could be interpreted as "pick up your food here", or it could mean you both order and pick up your food in the same place. It's at least a little vague. But no big deal. However the owner made me feel like an idiot going to this window to place my order, talked over me and wouldn't even let me explain my seeming confusion. I told him I tried the food last week and had come back. There was no "thanks", no smile, no friendliness, just a bad attitude. Honestly all it would have taken was a basic "how can I help you?" or even a little bit of courtesy. Instead I got anger and an argument over something so simple and ridiculous on what window to order from, with zero other customers around at the time. There are dozens of taco trucks in Silicon Valley, I'll be happy to go to their competitors from now on. The lesson here: just some basic politeness and a positive attitude goes a long way. Instead we're got a customer relationship that has been destroyed and a one star review on Yelp. So disappointing. Now I see the owner has decided to escalate the situation by accusing me of "discrimination"'. Ridiculous and sad. My wife is Hispanic and would beg to differ with you. I have years of experience working with customers in the restaurant industry and stand by every word in my review of the awful experience I had at this taco truck. read more

This is the best tacos I've tried in the bay area. My husband had so many tacos in the past and at work, and he still mentioned about this place! Not sure how their ratings are so good, promoted on social media, and rated #42 top 100 places to eat in the bay. I can name 10+ Mexican places that are better in the bay. I judge a Mexican place based on their super burrito. Tacos are too basic for me. I ordered an al pastor super burrito $13. It was just ok. Decent size. I asked for no salt, less rice and sour cream. There was still a ton of rice. The meat was the most disappointing. Didn't even taste like normal al pastor. It was almost like ground meat, small bits. Overall flavor was not well balanced. Their selection of meats is limited, no specialty meats like cabeza, lengua, etc. But they did have chicharron and barbacoa. It is located at a corner gas station. No line at 5 pm on a Fri. I was approached by a friendly Hispanic guy who handed me a business card and mentioned he had a food truck just down the street from the Chevron Gas Station on Leung Dr. here in Mountain View. The guy said he'd give us free tacos to try. I'd have to say the tacos are really good. The mild sauce has a delayed kick that looks scary spicy in appearance but pretty mild overall. Every coin has two sides. Heads or tails if you will but here goes: The super burritos are loaded with mostly ingredients such as crema Fresca, cilantros, onions, beans and cheese. I opted for no rice and chicharron for the meat. Chicharron I say but remember those old ladies who walk up to the counter and demand,  "where's the beef?"  Well in this case it was pork chicharron and there was hardly any. 3 stars for the free taco samples. In my photo I squeezed out the contents of the burrito, grossed-out my son in the process but I told him this was all in the name of my food review.  I sifted through the contents and found more cheese, retried beans but no pork other than the first two bites I took from the top. Very disappointing!  The burrito was not cheap also: $12 each. To make matters worse, their 16oz. horchatas are pretty good (not too sweet or overly cinnamonized but they were $3.50 each).   If you still want to go to this place, just opt for their tacos but try before you buy first. I would stay away from the super burrito. Looks good in a cape but not so super beyond that! read more

Definitely hits the spot. Their califa taco (especially the asada) is super delicious with some cheese between the traditional smaller corn tortillas and some crispy delicious asada. I came with high hopes due to their ratings. Not bad, but not worth the hype in my opinion. I ordered over the phone last 40 mins before closing. Food was ready quickly & person who answered was also kind. I asked for a quesadilla with no tomato. Worker responded with "the guacamole actually comes with the tomato chopped in it so it wouldn't be possible to remove" totally OK with me! (It's a dislike not allergy) However, the response, in my opinion, implied the guacamole was included with the plate, not an additional charge. Food wise, our tacos and quesadilla were so greasy... quesadilla is a generous size though! Their spicy salsa did have a nice kick to it too which was nice. Keep in mind though when you order in person, there's no prices on the menu... usually a red flag in my opinion. Just something to note prior to ordering so you don't get surprised at your total. 6 tacos & 1 quesadilla ran me 44$... yes food is expensive pretty much everywhere now but id say its a little too pricey for what we had gotten plus the quality of the food. read more

I'm a displaced Austinite, so I've been searching for good tacos. Amazing tacos for a great price. I'm full after 2, but I get 3 as a treat. Big guys could be full from 4/5. Honestly, the smell of these when you're driving home is insaneee. The green sauce has a good kick, the meat quality is good, the tortillas dont go soggy on the way home.
