Ok this Mexican joint is legit, you know it's the real deal when everything's in Spanish and I can't read the pos system when trying to checkout Carne asada burrito 8/10 this was like $12... the value of this fat burrito is insane. They added fresh tomatoes to this which was something I've never really had in my burrito, but nonetheless it was delicious. Adding their salsas and pickled veggies made it taste so much better too. Love the green salsa and the super spicy red one as well! Al pastor tacos 10/10 I judge a Mexican place by their al pastor, and this was one of the better Al pastor tacos I've had! The cook on this was exceptional and you can taste the pineapple marinade & the crispy charred pork wow this was so yummy! For condiments: Go for green sauce, pico de gallo, and spicy red sauce. This a small place with amazing food! There is nothing fancy about this spot so don't come in expecting a waiter. My friend and I decided to order two drinks and two dishes to split. -Alambres: I have never heard of this dish and was intrigued. We didn't know what was in it so we ordered it blindly. This knocked our socks off. We picked beef, so it had chopped beef, bell peppers, onions and bacon in it. It had melted cheese on it, as well and came on street taco sized tortillas, probably eight of them. -Pupusas: we ordered bean and cheese, as well as the chicken (I think). They came with a small warm orange dipping broth and small slaw. These were nice, big size, as well. -aqua frescas : they had watermelon, horchata and melon so we got the first two. The horchata was nice but we didn't finish it off. The watermelon was delicious and refreshing. If we're ever back in the area, will def go back! Also, stop in at the panderia that is next door! Fabulous options! They have a small salsa bar with several options (all had a kick) and radish, cucumber and pickled jalapenos. The chips on the side were the round corn chips- maybe store bought. I was looking for a food truck I had eaten at previously and it was not there. A couple of turns later and I came across a market with a taqueria off to the side. The sign is a temporary banner and I thought, just because you sell Mexican food does not mean you have the recipes and know how to make Mexican food, but in I went. The first thing I saw was not a single sign in the place in English. Hmm, potential good sign. Looked around and i was the only gringo in sight. Another potentially good sign. I was in a hurry, so needed to get a burrito to go rather than a plate. My go to in testing restaurants is Carnitas. It comes different ways. Like stew meat in broth or crisped-up, both can be delicious. The crisped-up way is another time-consuming step and one I typically appreciate as it adds another texture to the burrito. You have the soft rice, beans and other ingredients along with the crispy pork. In this case, absolutely delicious. Came in for the first time and ordered a carne asada burrito, cabeza taco, and al pastor taco. I'd definitely come back for the burrito and the al pastor. The burrito was generously stuffed with nicely seasoned carne asada and toasted on the griddle before serving. The Al pastor was very flavorful. The chef dips the tortillas in the fat of their carnitas before being warmed on the griddle. Next time, I want to try their carnitas bc there's a pot of it you can see stewing right next to the griddle station. I also want to try their soups & stews. I must come back ( to try Burrito for only $ 12 ?) but I was in the mood for Corn tortilla. So I ordered Beef Tacos. One Carne Asada, one Costilla ( Stew meat ?), one Suardero? or it start with " S ", and one Chicken. All the Tacos were very good. I forgot which one was which but in general I cannot find good Taco meat that is juicy with lots of flavour and all the Tacos were good meat. The Costilla might have been a little salty but I am picky. It has good flavour tho ( I think Costilla means Rib meat in spanish, it has a little fat for good flavour) The Chicken was outstanding and you get the most meat in that taco. They have other spanish meats ( like Buche-pork Stomach, Oreja-pig ear) I must try at another time ( I did not see Lengua which is one of my favorite mexican meats). i do think if you order the Burrito, maybe you can get more food? As taco only have meat, Onion, cilantro. They do have an authentic Salsa bar to get free Pico de Gallo ( Tomato, Onion), Green Salsa, Pickled Jalapeno, Pickled Onion, fresh Radish, Cucumber, & Orange or yellow/brown clear sauce ( be careful of this orange clear sauce? it was very very Hot & spicy, so dont put it on your food before you try it first. The Pico ( Tomato/ Onion) is not spicy so you can put that on your food. My Dad ordered the Camarones ( Shrimp) which is the most expensive item on the Menu. He should have ordered Enchiladas which were only $ 14, but he wanted Shrimp. He got big pieces of Shrimp but maybe they did not have time to make it perfect because I did not like the red sauce or tomato sauce they put on it. The Shrimp was big, I just did not like the sauce ( he gave me only one piece). But the Beans & Rice on his plate were very good. I wish I tried the Enchiladas but I really wanted Tacos (enchiladas come with Free Beans/Rice). I was glad I got the Tacos, best taste tacos. I think the Chicken is best deal you get a little more Chicken & tacos are only 3.25 each. The Chicken was juicy and very good. I should have tried maybe Alambre or Alambras but maybe different meat ( Im not sure). I think in the Alambras ( means Tacos with Cheese? bell pepper & onions) you get more Tacos. I heard on another Review you get more than six tacos??? I only ordered 4 tacos for 13 dollars ( 3.25 each) but in another review, you get over 6 tacos or 8? and the Alambras is only 13 dollars also? But sometimes I cannot eat too much cheese. I have sensitive stomach so I got tiny stomach ache. But maybe it was because when I came home I ate a cheese pastry & mango. I am willing to risk it one more time ( I live far away). The food is so good you cannot get really good Beans anywhere else. Okay. Before you ask why I gave it three stars, I can tell you it's not about the food. I've been coming to this location for years. Back then when it was called Marlen, then tacos conrro.etc. I live pretty far now and came on my day off excited for the same service. Today, I had this lady took my order. Very rude, so much negative vibes, I also got charged for a agua fresca when on the screen and right next to the register it said buy 5 tacos get the agua free. When I went back to tell her, she was acting weird, didn't even ask me what agua I wanted nothing. But before I could even ask her about it, she got in the phone and took a whole phone order while I was there waiting, no compassion or kindness. She has a very unwelcoming personality. You can tell she hates being there. It's very unfortunate to get that kind of service. I'm for sure not recommending this place any more. 3.5 stars overall but rounding up for one of the better burritos I've had recently. They weren't busy at 4:15pm on a Sunday, and it was about a 10 minute wait for a take out order. They also serve the classic proteins: asada, al pastor, carnitas, and pollo. I wasn't a fan of the red salsa since it was too acidic and had too many chili seeds. I'll be back for more of their burritos, and plan to try some different proteins for tacos the next time around! Both indoor and outdoor seating options were available, and they had hand sanitizer. Some staff were wearing masks (despite the mandate being lifted), but the majority were not. Surprised this little taqueria isn't reviewed that much (9 at time of writing). I suppose being tucked away on the plaza could do that. It's always busy here(maybe 4-5 groups) during weekday lunches. Mostly working folk, families, and other wanderers like myself. My experience here is very specific, and I don't care about trying the whole menu - nobody has time for that. Probably been here 15-20 times. Each time we have tacos and the al pastor quesdilla. Their al pastor is on a spinning machine, providing good heat, flavor, and crunch. This place has one of the better quesdillas in the area, arguably in Palo Alto. You put this with SF and SJ taquerias, it's tough to beat. But around here, this place stands out. Fresh meat, nice grilling, tasty ingredients, and relatively quick. Tacos come with two tortillas, lots of onion, a burst of cilantro (every place needs to do this!), and a healthy serving size of meats. Carne asada, al pastor, chicken, and lingua all taste good here. Quesdilla is perfect. Huge serving size. Perfect amount of melted cheese, meat, and sauce ratio. Always fills me up. Come here for value, flavor, and variety of fresh drinks. P.S. I read a review about this place being racist. Maybe just my luck - I have never felt that here. it looks like the Joya empire is now complete. First a grocery store, then a bakery and now they've taken over the Super Tacos El Conrro space as well. They've done some minor cosmetic modifications and the menu has been pared down but it's quite similar to STEC's biz before. The chicharron prensado is unique holdover and the unusual meats like ojo, oreja, buche, etc still exist.. I still see the STEC food truck so good that they're still around, they just dont have the cool patio anymore. I was visiting from another state and decided to give this restaurant a try because of the reviews, but don't get FOOLED. I had a very unpleasant experience ordering from them through DoorDash. I placed an order for tacos and added in the notes that I wanted SALSA ROJA Y VERDE with my food. When the first order arrived, there were no sauces at all. The tacos were too dry to eat, so I decided to place another order for just one item and called the restaurant to explain the situation. The person I spoke with assured me they would include the sauces this time. I was very understanding at the time and gave them another chance. After waiting another 40 minutes, the second order arrived and once again they failed to include the SALSAS. At that point it was clear they are unprofessional and do not bother reading their DoorDash ticketing or customer notes or cared at all to make sure they made it up to the client the second time. The first order should have been correct, and or after promising to fix it, they still messed up. As a business, they need to get it together.
