Had the chilaquiles, a quesadilla, and a pork taco. Reasonably priced family restaurant. Fast and friendly service but only breakfast until 1 pm. Limited menu but well prepared. Best for breakfast, maybe lunch. Casual, local ambience.
Walked on a Wednesday morning to get some breakfast before a tour. Memo from Vallarta 101 recommended this place. We ordered chilaquiles and taco de machaca. Everything was delicious, tasted like home cooking. Service was fast and attentive. There were others eating around. Their menu changes depending on the time of day.
El Campanario is an amazing restaurant and local spot. We visited multiple times while in PV. My wife really loved their bean and cheese breakfast taco. I enjoyed my multiple meals here and really enjoyed my below pictured breakfast quesadilla with egg, beef, onion, and peppers. I believe it's called Machaca. Great service, great food, great people! El Campanario is located right next door to Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. The beautiful crown church. The Agua Fresca is also amazing. Americans bring pesos. 5 stars El Campanario.

Loved this little restaurant in front of the church, very friendly, quick service, delicious home style food. They only take cash, so be prepared. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The price is very reasonable and affordable. We loved getting their lunch menu. Comes with soup of the day, choice and entree, and delicious agua fresca of the day.
Good but not great. Nothing really stood out. I stopped by for breakfast and ordered the Omelet with Chorizo. The egg was fluffy and the chorizo was full flavor. It came with a small amount of refried beans and it was flavorful but the tortilla chips was stale. The spicy salsa has a kick to it Mostly locals and a few tourists. It's next to the cathedral so lots of foot traffic and good for people watching. The service is a bit off and slow.
This cute place is right across from a beautiful church. Great atmosphere and authentic food! Everything I've had has been mazing. I always have a big bowl of pozole. Tonight I switched to a small bowl and a crispy taco. And we ordered a tostada de pierna. Nothing failed, everything was a great as ever. Service is amazing. Even if they don't speak English, they try and you get everything you need. Excellent!! Oh, over 40 years making pozole here!
The BEST food we had on our trip to Puerto Vallarta! It was so good we went back for more two nights later. The place is small and cute! The food comes out quickly and as it is prepared. It's very authentic and delicious. The atole came out piping hot and was some of the best I have ever had. The agua fresca was fresh and amazing (agua cebada and jamaica). The staff are prompt, give great recs, and are fun to chat with! This is a must when visiting the area!
I was perusing reddit and other places to find a good pozole places... The pozole was fine but not super good! It just lacked the spice and was a bit bland. Maybe pozoles taste like that in Mexico.. I make green pozole at home and I like a kick in mine.. The fixings made it a little better but still was not wowed. We did buy 8 tostadas (just the tostadas) cuz it was good to snack on!!!
This is a simple little spot across the street from the church. We had the Mexican egg scramble & chilequiles. Both were tasty, however could have used a little more heat. temp wise) Not very spicy. Had a couple cold cervezas which made our meal complete Can get crowded. Sometimes a line.
Delicious, authentic Mexican food. We went twice in a week. Everything was absolutely delicious-pozole, tacos, enchiladas, and sopes. The staff was kind and the location is perfect in front of the church.

Spicy . 4 stars Shrimp fajitas- grilled to perfection , very moist inside and crispy outside. Not tough as d flavorful! 4 stars Steak plate- 4 stars , for the price it was a great value. Tasty! Chicken fajita - 4 stars came with veggies , rice and beans

What can I say that others have not. The food is delicious! Hubby had 2 orders of the tacos! And no he is not chubby, they are that good! I had the sopes, which were very filling and also delicious! I highly recommend this place near La Cathedral. Vengan con hambre. You will not be disappointed. read more
We were craving a small dinner but especially tamales. El Campanario was the perfect choice and conveniently located a short 10 minute walk for us. We had a pork tamale, chicken enchilada, shredded beef sopa and a sweet strawberry & raisin tamale to finish it off. The perfect mix and amount of food. You can order everything in singles or in multiples for a few pesos less. The staff was friendly, service prompt, and the food fresh and flavorful. read more
I went to El Campanario on my first night in Puerto Vallarta upon the recommendation of my hotel concierge as an authentic, local restaurant. I loved it so much, I returned again a few nights later. As soon as I got to the restaurant, I noticed everyone sitting in the restaurant was a local. It didn't look like there were many tourists there. I ordered the Plato Mexicano, which featured a little bit of everything - a taco, a soup, an enchilada, and a pezole, as well as an atole drink. Everything was really tasty! The service at the restaurant was also great - I chatted with my server (I believe he said his name was pronounced "guy-ole" but I've probably got it wrong) and he was extremely friendly. He gave me a bunch of local recommendations on things to do in the area that are more off the beaten path. read more

El Campanario feels like a hole in the wall restaurant but it is packed with locals and tourists alike. We were there for dinner and managed to get a seat, but the food was not anything to write home about. The menu consists of typical Mexican fare, but the ingredient quality just doesn't compare to the other restaurants - pictured was my dinner with consisted of stale hardened fried tortilla, mildly seasoned fried beans, a very minimal portion of stew meat, and all the fixings on top. It amounts to almost a fast food like level of food. The seating was alright but it took a bit of time to take our order, also there's no AC but the windows were open. read more

This restaurant is located directly across from the church, popular among locals, super busy and has the sweetest lady working inside. She was not fluent in English but enough to order and get by. She was the sweetest lady ever! My family and I ordered a few different things. The jamon omelette and chorizo omelette, pancakes, Mexican chilaquiles, and orange juice. The juice was the freshest I've ever had. My bf kept saying it was the best he ever had. 100% pure and naturally sweet. Everything tasted great with the perfect portion amount. We also ordered tacos to go and the lady wrapped everything so neatly and individually packed each toppings and sauce. 5 meals, 4 coffee, 2 juice cost less than $30. Incredible!! read more
Probably, one of the best of the best, local eats in Puerto Vallarta. Mostly supported by locals and some expats, this place comes with a full meal. A soup of the day (changes daily), a fruit drink, the main meal and a dessert, all for only 85 Mexican pesos. That's under $5 USD. Place is packed during peak hours for lunch and dinner. They also have Togo as well. Lots of space to dine in with a nice breeze. Service was excellent and food was very tasty. Our favorite here in PV and will return again and again. I highly recommend. My favorite meal in PVR. Good ambience, not just tourists paying 300 pesos for enchilada plates. I had the tacos dorados with piccadillo (beef) as my main. They were delightfully crispy and greasy, requiring no further sauces. The mug of atole was also a fascinating hit. It's a cornmeal and milk drink that reminded me a lot of hot horchata. The one bleh dish for me was the tamale, but I also just think I'm not a tamale person. It started pretty bready and bland, a bit like an unsauced Indian idli. By the end, I reached some fatty rib meat that was tasty. Still a 5-star for me: service, ambience, value, taste. read more
I was walking around PV and passed this place right across from the pretty Parroquia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. They serve a lunch menu from 1-5pm that is a huge amount of food for the money. Its a great deal. I got the special of the day, birria; and it came with soup, rice, a salad, beans, tortillas, and their fruit water of the day. The place is nicely decorated. Please be aware they only take cash. The waitstaff was really friendly too read more

What a delicious, quaint little spot. Loved the ambiance of the church bell ringing across the street. We ordered one of everything and nothing disappointed. Tamales were so good we bought some to go. My picky 5yo enjoyed the posole I was so surprised. So glad we found this gem of a place! I recommend getting the Plato Mexicano so you can try everything. The atole, which normally I am not a fan of, changed my mind completely. I almost orders some to go. read more

This is one of our 2 favorite local sit down taquerias. It's directly across from the main church Our Lady Guadalupe. The service is quick and pleasant, and the food is perfect. We have gone for lunch and they offer a lunch special which is a full Mexican plate and an agua fresca. For dinner, they offer crunchy tacos, rolled tacos, enchiladas, tamales, sopes, and pozole among other things. There is always a rotating selection of agua frescas. The price is unbeatable for the location, amount of food and quality of food. read more

Great small spot on the corner of the block. Hot or not? Torta de pierna(pork): a simple yet delicious choice. Hot item. Sope (pierna/pork): a tasty little sope topped w tomato sauce, sour cream, cheese lettuce. Hot item $15mx The green sauce I believe Serrano/avocado omg drooling it has a kick so beware, very Hot item delicious. Definitely try. Chocomilk to drink I get it frappe style Bc I like it icy. Oj has pulp yum. Parking can be tough in the area, great price point. Authentic food. read more

A must stop every visit we make to Puerto Vallarta! We were surprised that we didn't have to wait for a table but during our visit and covid times restaurants must closed by 830. They take sanitation seriously taking your temp and hand sanitizer use before you step in. Even witnessed sanitizing tables and chairs after patrons leave. We opted for the Sopes (2 chicken 2 pork) pork was my favorite but both tasty. If you've never tried them this is the place! Corn cake layered with beans meat cabbage and cheese. Yummy for my tummy. We also had a chicken enchilada and a chicken flautas which were both very good. And we just had to have tamales too 1 pork and 1 poblano pepper. They too were da bomb! Beer was cold, service warm, friendly and funny! We were full to the top of our heads with great food and quaint atmosphere. It isn't touristy and cash only my friend. Must stop for anyone traveling here. read more

We spent a week here and this was the BEST fricking food in Puerto Vallarta !!! We tried a little of everything and it was so good we returned back throughout our trip. Their atole is sooo creamy and sweet tamales were incredible. Highly recommend for bomb food and friendly service. The ambiance was lovely as well as the artwork hanging on the walls. They even have vegetarian options:) I will come back to Puerto Vallarta just to visit this place again. ENJOY !!! read more

Food options are limited but excellent. This place is always packed, for good reason. Staff is very helpful and fast. Food is absolutely delicious and inexpensive. We had the sopes with chicken, pozole verde, tacos dorados os chicken and potatoes, and a tostada de pierna. read more

Stopped here for lunch on a food tour several years ago. Made it back for breakfast today. Simple, original, and very good. Good service too. Nice to be in a real local restaurant. read more
Absolutely the best meal we had in PV! It was pouring rain the night we came here. It was all by chance as the place we had planned to go to was outside, so our Uber driver recommended this place. I recommend the sample of Mexico dish because you get a little bit of everything. The beef tacos were my favorite ! My husband had enchiladas and they were great too. If you're looking for an eatery with great Mexican food at an affordable price, El Campanario is a great place to go. It's called El Campanario (the bell tower) because of the church that is right across the street. Their menu has vegetarian options (i.e. beans with cheese). I had the chilaquiles without egg or chicken. It was amazing. The waiter explained to us that the two sauces on the table were a red sauce (more watery/tomato-ey) and a yellow/green sauce (oil-based and very spicy). The yellow/green sauce gave the dish such a nice kick--if you enjoy a little spice, go for the yellow/green sauce. Chilaquiles were great. I'd recommend adding an egg if you want the sauce to be less watery. Chicken would be good for anyone wanting a little extra meat as well. Prices were so reasonable. For the plate of chilaquiles, a taco, a quesadilla, and a liter of jamaica (hibiscus juice) it came out to less than $10 USD. read more

We usually stick to restaurants near Zona Romántica and Emilio Zapata but I told my spouse that we need to explore further north in the Proyecto Escola area as star ratings there are just as high, less touristy, and prices are low. Bingo! ATMOSPHERE: The little corner eatery is located right across the street from the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe church (the one with the big crown atop). It's small inside, open-air, clean, with beautiful floor tiles that climb up the walls. We were the only visitors amongst locals which I loved. BRUNCH MENU: Chilaquiles, eggs, quesadillas, sopes, tortas & sandwiches. Juices, milkshakes, even beer. BEVERAGE: Strawberry Banana Milkshake - $2.00 USD Though it was served on the verge of lukewarm temperature, it was good as it wasn't overly sweet. I could tell that only fresh fruits were used and with no added sugar or fattening milk as I wasn't full afterwards. Delish! FOOD: Sopes - $0.90 USD My spouse's dish. Sopes are constructed similar to a benedict but are worlds different. At the bottom are deep-fried corn cakes which are then topped with beans, cabbage, tomato sauce and cheese. More toppings are available like pork (that my spouse added) and eggs. He liked it but I didn't care for the corn cakes as I don't like the taste of corn tortillas in general. Great deal at 90 cents!? You didn't read that wrong! Eggs - $2.50 USD I opted for scrambled and added chorizo for a whopping 50-cents more. The eggs came chopped up as you're supposed to wrap them in corn tortillas. Not being a fan of the corn variety, I ate just the eggs which were full of salty, meaty goodness from the sausage. Yum. Birria Pork Quesadilla - $1.90 USD Oh man, this was deee-lish! Imagine tender, shredded pork simmered in a savory red broth, melted cheese, served in a warm corn tortilla. Hell yeah. The immense flavors inside totally masked the nastiness of the corn tortilla and made me moan with each bite. Adding this to my collection "The Best Thing I Ever Ate"! SERVICE: A posted sign stated to sign up on the clipboard inside. Because there were open seats, we were seated immediately. The ladies were very friendly and helpful to us gringos. Food delivery took about 15 minutes. TIPS: Cash only. Breakfast served from 8a-12p, lunch from 9a-2p. OVERALL: Delicious & unbelievably cheap. If you want an authentic Mexican brunch, this is your spot! read more
