I wasn't aware of this place but have stopped in a couple of times whenever I'm nearby. El Caporal had tasty tacos and cerviche. I have never waited in a long line, the prices are fair and the customer service is always pleasant. Not impressed. I tried it just to try it. I normally just go to Tres Hermanos. First, this place offers hardly any parking area. The woman who took my order was not pleasant, as if she wanted to be elsewhere. I got the mojado burrito. Lots of red sauce. Problem is, it was too spicy. I can handle spice, in fact I love the heat and the flavors, but not being spicy hot just for the sake of being hot. This is the latter, useless, uncalled for hot. I just finished 3/4 of my meal. I'd like to be close to milk when I finish the rest. The chips are old. And, the salsas were not marked at all, as to which is mild. Remember, all kinds of people eat at public restaurants, not just Mexicans. If you calibrate it just for Mexicans, then you exclude other potential customers. And, I guarantee you, even for a Mexican, this place was unreasonably spicy hot. I don't recommend at all. Avoid. read more

Every since my grandparents came to the US they have found it hard to find good Mexican food that reminds them of their home town but they have had a hard time finding one. But when we moved to Sylmar, me, my grandma and my mom found El Caporal and we were curious if it was good so we came to try it and it was delicious. My grandma said that it was so good and it reminded her of home. I know for a fact that the food is good because the service we get and my grandma goes out of her way to talk with the cashier every time we go. Another time when I walked from school the cashier went out of her way to make a conversation which was nice. When it's just me and my mom going by ourselves we find the ambiance really nice and calm because no one is every eating their. This place is definitely one of my family's favorite Mexican places. read more

I've been coming here since I was a little girl, it is fireeeeee hands down. Best enchiladas I have ever had. I come here 3 to 4 times a week my boyfriend is addicted he gets the menudo every weekend along with his favorite tacos de cabeza. They cook everything just right. Solid, flavorful Al Pastor but he thing that really sets these guys apart is their salsa. The carrots, onion, jalapeno mix has cauliflower and entire heads of garlic! I love it. I confirmed it was made here and consumed an entirely inappropriate quantity considering my tiny order. Had some more, then a little more then finally pulled myself away after just a little more. I am a regular. Like 3 times a week for the last 2 years regular. I make the drive from Santa Clarita every time. I've also been a regular customer for the last 15 years. They say the kitchen closes at 945. I called at 9:18, was told by the lady that she can't take my phone order but that I can come in and order. I told her that I'm coming from Santa Clarita, she said OK. I get there at 9:40, lights off, she's at the counter counting the money. I told her through the door that I was the one who had just called and she said that they were closed. So why say that the kitchen closes at 945 and that restaurant closes at 10? DAMN...now this is good Mexican food!!! Ive been here 3 times this week and I'm seriously considering going back tonight for the 2nd time today! The Carne Asada burittos and tacos are hella good, authentic and made fresh. They serve home made corn chips with all of their food, and thats my only complain, they always try to skimp you on the chips, I always have to ask for more, usually only getting 4 or 5 chips initially. The fresh salsa bar is also delicious, tasty and spicy, just like mom makes it. The parking is a pain in the ass. It's a tiny lot with about 8 spaces all bunched together. There is only space for one car to maneuver at a time, so if you are coming in or going out, you gotta be careful you don't hit other cars. The staff could be a bit friendlier, not that they are rude, but they don't go the extra mile by smiling or asking you how u r doing. Last but not least, they don't accept credit transactions, only debit using your pin. I really hate using my pin at anywhere except the bank. I'm bringing cash next time, you should too! I've lived in Sylmar, coming on two years, and have driven past this place everyday. I hesitated to try this place. On a Saturday my wife and I went out for the night and my parent's baby sat our son, my father was in the mood for a burrito and took it upon himself to try this place out. He ordered a carne asada burrito and my mom got a chile relleno, along with some other stuff that they devoured. My father left half his burrito and my mom was too full to eat her chile relleno. I tried the burrito and was surprised by its delightfulness. I went the following day to get dinner for my family and was again flabbergasted by the mouth watering flavors. I got the carnitas burrito, my wife got the chicken burrito. I returned yet again the next day and ordered a carne asada burrito, chicken burrito, nachos supreme and a quesadilla for my son. This place is great! Their carne asada, al pastor and carnitas tacos are DELICIOUS and LEGIT MEXICAN. My favorite is the carnitas. Especially a burrito with carnitas, so damn good. I hit this place up at least once every couple of weeks. Staff is super friendly and inviting. I'll take 1 star off because of the crappy parking. It's a TINY parking lot. Lot is a big word to describe it though. More like a handful of spots. They share these spots with a ghetto ass smoke shop and a Subway. Other than that, you should give them a try! read more

Their carnitas is probably the best out of the meats, al pastor is good just a little to greasy and the carne asada is below average. Just seems a little too much grounded up and not flavorful. There's 2 kinds of red salsas they're both super hot and I prefer the green salsa. Cashier is always very attentive and never messes up orders and she'll gladly thrown in a bunch of chips with your order. This place has killer Mexican food. It's tasty, very affordable and the portions are great. I just ordered their super nacho plate with tripe...absolutely delicious. Thier beef soup and menudo is great too. Now, this place has extremely limited parking. The place isn't terribly clean, either...but it's a true "Hole in the wall" restaurant. Don't let the food & affordability deter you; this is decent quality food. No tummy aches or diarrhea here! There's a bathroom, it's pretty basic, kinda dirty, so that's really my only gripe with this place. So if you're looking for a hearty, tasty, affordable and quick Mexican food fix and you're anywhere near this place, you gotta stop by.
