First off, please know parking is hard to find especially if it's busy; I found parking after 5 minutes of looking and going around the block. When I entered there was a big line. After 10 minutes, I ordered some pan dulce and I was surprised it tasted stale. I went on a Saturday morning at around 10am so expected it to be nice and fresh. It was my first time going so I was confused but You order your food first then they charge you. They have a lot of bakery options and food as well. We decided to make it count and order things from the bakery and food. The pupusas were delicious and the corn elote as well. The horchata & The bakery items were a hit! The women taking the orders could've been a bit nicer but I can see how they can get overwhelmed because of the line. Either way it wasn't an issue for me and the food spoke volumes. Some coworkers and I made our way here for lunch after I recommended the pastries from my last visit to their other location. One of our coworkers is Salvadoran so she really wanted to try it and I hoped she liked it! We arrived around 11:20am and there was already a small crowd but a larger lunch crowd came in around 11:45. Ordering is fast and easy and there are quite a few employees taking orders and making plates, and you pay after you eat. I ordered a cheese pupusa (pupusa de queso), cheese and pork (pupusa de queso y chicharron) and those came with a side of the cabbage and salsa, a side of plantains/platanos that came with crema, a large horchata. I honestly did not expect everything to be so much as it turned out to be a LOT of food. The side of plantains alone could be a meal in itself! I also didn't realize how much heavier and richer the Salvadoran horchata is over Mexican horchata so I couldn't even finish that. Anywho, here is what I thought of each: The pupusas were delicious! Not greasy or soggy at all; they had a nice crispiness to the outside while the interior dough was thick and fluffy. Lots of gooey cheese and the pork was tender but I wish there was more. I almost forgot there was any pork in that one. The cabbage is a bit salty but still delicious. It's crunchy and vinegary too. The salsa has a kick but balances well once it is poured over the cabbage. The plantains are delicious. They are mixed in texture as some are crispier on the outside while other softer but all have a nice, soft texture inside with a caramelized sweetness on the outside. The crema is thick and rich too. As I said for the horchata, this is more rich and dense, almost like a champurado. It's not too sweet and good, but I just couldn't finish it like I would for a Mexican style horchata. I am honestly not sure how much everything is indivudally because the total came to just under $17. The pupusas were about $3 each, horchata was $4, and I am not sure how much the side of plantains were or if the other "sides" (crema, cabbage, salsa) were extra. Either way, it was a ton of food and I probably should have saved a pupusa for later but it was so good! I did save some cabbage and plantains for later though. I already recommended the pastries and now I can recommend the main dishes! read more

I blame the holidays for my current obsession with Pupusas. Everyone, lately, has been posting pictures of various pupusas on their social medias. So here I am writing a review because those posts got me to try a new bakery a few miles away from home. Carrusel Bakery is located in the middle of a small corner plaza. You won't even know it's there if you weren't looking for it. Now, for first time goers the bakery might seem so much. The start of the line is on your left. It will direct you to the Pupusas where a nice employee will ask for your order. You will then pay or pick items from the bakery. A few items we tried: PUPUSAS- Reveultas (Beans, Pork, and Cheese) - My favorite from the bunch. It's a meal in itself. They look small but they're filling. Queso (Cheese)- Great for kids/picky eaters. Simple and hits the spot. My kids ate about 4 of these. Queso con Loroco (Cheese and Loroco Vegetable) - A Loroco is an edible flower. Don't let it fool you because this was also delicious. Queso con Frijol (Cheese and Beans) Honestly, I should have just ordered the reveultas because it was average for me. I much prefer it with the pork. EMPANADAS DE PLATANO: (It looks like a small corndog) But instead its a fried plantain with custard inside. They also have one with beans but I did not try it. It's a mixture between sweet and savory. CONCHAS: A sweet bread roll. You can identify them because of the different colored tops. White, Brown, Pink, Yellow. Each with different colors. (My favorite one is the white one) PAN DE ELOTE: A sweet corn cake. Yes, much like corn bread, but a little sweeter. Overall, the bakery is a 5 star for me. Helpful and friendly people. Love love their food! Let me tell you being Salvadoran they get my approval! Their pupusas are delicious and huge! Not greasy either! They are $2.90 each and different kinds. Usually other places charge more for a different kind of pupusa not here. Their prices are great considering their portions are huge. Their pan Dulce is also really delicious and you can order a cafecito or aguas frescas to go with it! You can order custom cakes (which are delicious) or pick one up from their fridge. They have various Salvadoran plates to pick from not only pan dulce and pupusas. All of their food is delicious and very reasonably priced! You can get breakfast items as well as panes con pollo all under 13 bucks! They have a couple of Carrusel bakeries out in the Valley but I haven't tried the other ones. Also I usually place my order over the phone no online ordering yet. The parking can really suck as it is located on a shopping center with various business. Definitely my go to for pupusas and typical Salvadoran dishes out here on this side of town! read more

Let me tell you !!! I've been coming to this place since I was like 10 !? But at the reseda location for their baked goods . As an adult now I live down the corner for about 10 years . Very disappointed with the service. I had an issue today while while purchasing food at the Van Nuys establishment. I had ordered a breakfast plate and paid. When I got to my destination and was ready to eat, I saw that I was given the wrong food. I then proceeded to call the store to let them know of the mistake. The person who had taken my order, instead of apologizing, proceeded to tell me it was my fault, and I had taken the wrong bag when it was her that handed me the bag. She was extremely rude, and I will not be purchasing from here anymore. I will dispute this transaction because I did not receive what was ordered. I read many reviews after this happened and a lot of the people complain about the service. I will definitely not be returning there! I tried emailing them but their email doesn't even work and can't speak with the owner/manager. Not that it would make a difference because of the way the speak to the clients. read more

Been here a couple times and their pupusas are pretty good. I just wish they had more filling in them. They are pretty decent size for the price though. I usually get revueltas and the bean and cheese ones. I can personally only eat one or 2 of these because they are big! We had a craving for good popusas and yuca frita con chicharrón. We came in, there was no line. The young lady taking our order was very sweet and very patient with all of our questions. Everything was delicious! All the staff was super friendly and helpful and very welcoming. We wanted to try a variety, so we ordered popusas, yuca frita & Chicharon, taquitos dorados, casamiento (rice& beans mixed) a side of refried beans and rice, Canoas (Open Faced Plantain with Custard), also horchatas and an agua de ensalada de fruta .The popusas were very good, only thing is if you want cheesy popusas, you'll need to order plain cheese ones because the revueltas and chicharrón & cheese didn't seem to have much cheese in them. The taquitos were good! The green salsa they are served with was our favorite! Chicharrón & yuca was fried perfectly crispy and not oily. Rice was very flavorful and fluffy. The canoa is delicious!
