The food was incredibly fresh and authentic. We've traveled all over the world after living in Portland for nearly a decade. I'm so happy we found this gem in my hometown. My coworker and I ate here for lunch. We were super excited to try the food given reviews. I ordered the birria and my coworker ordered a torta. The wait time for food was over 30 minutes. I always give people benefit of doubt cause often food will make up for wait time. This was not the case here. Don't go anywhere that doesn't make their own tortillas! Best Mexican food I've had in Astoria, Oregon besides Taco Bell ! The cucumber margarita is a must-have. The inside of the establishment is way cuter than it looks on the outside, so give it a try. Tacos a bit on the expensive side at $3.50 each. I recommend going for the full entrees where you do get a good bang for your buck. A nice all around dining experience with attentive service. If I were evaluating my own experience only, I would probably give it 2 stars, but my sister was much happier with her meal, so I'm giving it 3 stars. I'm convinced that the problems with my meal were caused by the water. We both ordered water to drink, but one sip was all either of us could handle; there is definitely something wrong with the water. (It strongly tasted "plastic-y" and chemical-y to me). Maybe that's just the way the municipal water tastes in Warrenton, or maybe there's some problem with the water at Tacos El Catrin. I only know it tasted horrid. My sister didn't seem to detect the flavor of the water in her food, but I did. I ordered the Almond Chicken, and although it tasted pretty good, the presentation was not too appetizing. The Green Rice tasted peculiar (from the water, I believe) and I didn't eat that at all. Also the corn tortillas, which were probably steamed with the same water, tasted really bad; I couldn't eat them. The small serving of salad that came on my dinner plate had no dressing of any kind -- just dry soft-leaf lettuce and nothing else. Didn't eat that either. My sister got chicken enchiladas, that comes with a large chicken thigh, and some potatoes. She thoroughly enjoyed it. She ate as much as she could until she was stuffed, and there was still an entire enchilada left on the plate. I would like to suggest to the owners that they investigate their water, and see if there might be something leaching into it. read more

This was NOT a cheap place, you get what you pay for... worth the price and trip. We had not been here before and friends wanted to try it. Parking is easy to find. It obviously has a following. Before we arrived our friends realized that one of the previous owners no longer there. Service was slow initially. Perhaps there were more early customers than expected. An hour later there was plenty of help but in the meantime it wasn't good. It took some time to get noticed and get drinks ordered. The margarita was good. They have real coke in a bottle. The chips came in a small bowl instead of a basket so there were very few at any time. We had several different menu items. My choice is often called carne asada. It tasted fine but was not as good as it is in two nearby restaurants. My wife was unhappy with cheese enchilada and eggs. We will stay with our usual Mexican restaurant. read more

We read about this place in a Sunset magazine issue a while back so I had it bookmarked ready to go for our holiday weekend. We tried a variety of tacos and all delicious, and most had a different style of tortilla to match (flour, corn, blue). I called in a to-go order while staying at a KOA campground in the vicinity (15 min drive). My meal was a mixed (chicken/beef/seafood) fajita meal, and it was cooked and packaged to perfection, far exceeding my expectations. The strips of chicken and beef were deliciously moist and tender topped with a skewer of super tasty grilled shrimp. There were strips of grilled bell peppers and onions that I love, and of course, beans and rice. Fresh chips and salsa on the side. I topped off my little feast with excellent flan. There was so much food, I reheated and ate two more times, and the meat was not dry even then. The hosts were friendly and efficient, and the restaurant was set up to be Covid-friendly for hygiene standards. I felt safe and overall happy with the entire experience. The chicken in Mole sauce was very thin and dry, however, the mole sauce was good. The chicken enchiladas had very little chicken in them, but they had lots of refried beans, which the menu did not include in the description....I hate beans. The food took about 5 min or less, which suggests it was pre-made and maybe microwaved? The margaritas tasted like a mix and were very sweet. The chips were freshly fried and they were good. Even though there was a large party (looked like a bridal shower), the service was excellent. I really enjoyed the food. For the same price as your normal everyday Mexican restaurant fare, this place presented a fresh flavor and dishes that looked like a high-end gourmet dining experience. The owner himself was taking orders, tending bar, and running the kitchen - and partway through my margarita he brought around a pitcher and topped off my drink and another margarita at the next table. This is a gem on the North Oregon coast. Small but comfortable, great parking and terrific food and menu. Maybe the best and certainly the most creative taco salad of my life.
