Mediocre Mexican food at not so mediocre prices. Having spent most of my life eating traditional Mexican food this was highly disappointing. But I understand that most of these restaurants are trying to appeal to popular tastes from Conway, SC and the surrounding areas. So I was expecting not very much. We love to dine in at El Cerro, but when our wedding plans got changed due to COVID we decided to try to use El Cerro catering. Not only was it inexpensive, they prepared everything perfectly for serving, everything was extremely fresh and still hot when we got it home, and we had leftovers for dayssss. We just used them again for a small birthday party and it was just as good if not better for the second time. They helped my husband carry everything to his car in the pouring rain, made it extremely easy to order it all, and it was incredibly delicious. Stopped here for a late lunch on a Monday afternoon with a group of 10. We ordered drinks and then the complimentary chips and salsa came out, we also ordered the queso to begin. The chips and salsa and queso were so good! I ordered the chicken and beef taquitos for my meal (1 beef, 1 chicken) that came with lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and rice (I substituted beans). I really enjoyed my meal, the taquitos were piping hot when they arrived as were the beans. Everyone in my group enjoyed their meals, I wish this place was closer to home! Service was great, our waiter was fast and took great care of us. My wife and I stopped in on our way home from the beach. They were fairly busy and we were seated quickly and they brought our drinks and chips in no time. The service was courteous and the place was very clean and well cooled (middle of July) The food was outstanding and very plentiful. A few years ago I gave El Cerro 5 stars. Now, it's a mere 2. Here's why: 1. The food continues to go downhill. They now use crisp, white plates instead of the Fiestaware they used to use, but that does not make up for the flavorless crap they put on the plates. In the past few months, they've also begun to use different corn tortillas which are horrible. As soon as they cool to room temperature they become extremely grainy. 2. The service is not as great as it used to be. We have called for take out three times in 2015. The first time was great. The second time, the food took 40 minutes when it was supposed to take 15. Yesterday, they made sure to tell us it took only 10 minutes and that we were late. However, they got nearly all of our order wrong--giving us items that cost less than what we paid for, etc. 3. After eating at every Mexican restaurant in several surrounding counties and in different cities, I can assure you that El Cerro is no longer the best place to eat your enchiladas. read more

Stopped here on the way home from MB for lunch. We didn't leave hungry. Lunch specials were well priced and service was friendly but a little slow. The AC unit was also dripping on us. The salsa was probably not fresh but it was real good. The chips were fresh. I got the #5 enchilada lunch and was satisfied. Decor was nice. I recommend it but went 4 stars for the aforementioned flaws. read more

I've had both great and bad here. The carne asada is terrible, don't order it. Fajitas ok, service great and chimichangas were good.

Consistently great. I like the Speedy Gonzalez lunch special (which I had today). My favorite dinner item is the Choripollo. They have a delicious salsa that comes with the complimentary chips. The rice is perfect-- they have done something to make it even better than it was in the past few months. The choriqueso dip (sausage and cheese) is a great dipping sauce for the chips for $7.95. We are new to the area and have eaten here 2 times. The first time was for lunch. The portions were generous and everything tasted good. So we went back again. This time for dinner. There were 3 of us and we all had the same complaint. The food had no flavor. While it looked pretty enough, it was the most bland food I think I have ever had. There was no seasoning at all. I have got to say, I am dumbfounded by all of the rave reviews. It was mediocre at best. Service was very unfriendly and the food was really not worth the money. I had the combo platter and enchiladas poblanos. The poblanos chicken was hard chunks and barely any spinach. The combo platter was ok, but definitely wouldn't recommend it for 14$. I wish I would have went to Abuelo's because I never leave there unsatisfied. Bigger portions, better service and tastier food- and the two places cost about the same. Hands down, the best sit-down restaurant in Conway. The food is delicious, the menu has something for everyone, the prices are reasonable, and the service is excellent. I've been here many, many times over the years with friends and family and have never had a bad experience at El Cerro. When we have visitors from out of town we always bring them here. Much better quality than some of the tourist trap restaurants and overpriced seafood troughs at the beach, in my opinion. read more

I went here and ordered the taco salad and it was really watery in the bottom of the plate and they used liquid cheese on top which made it more watery but the chips and salsa they gave us was really good. so it wasnt a good experience for my first time having mexican in over ten years. read more

My family and I have enjoyed El Cerro for years - probably 20 years. We ate at their location in Myrtle Beach on 2nd Ave and have followed them around the area; the location on 501 in Conway and now their newest location near Wal Mart. The food is always delicious, hot and the service has always been great......til today. I took my 3 grandchildren to El Cerro on Rivertown Blvd, and things went downhill from the time we walked in the door. First, the hostess gave us 2 menus and my almost 11 year grandsons received toddler type menus with crayons. They got the regular menus after we were seated to see what they wanted to order, that is when I realized we were only given 2 menus, so I went to the hostess station (unattended) and got my own menu. Then our waitress, who, knowing that I did not order with the others since I obtained a menu late, did not bother to offer more salsa as we waited............ I finally went towards the kitchen and saw another server who has waited on us many times. He asked if I needed something. I said yes, we are dealing with some poor service today. In a few minutes, the "waitress" came to our table and said, "That will be $3.75". I said I don't understand what you are talking about. She said that she "heard" me tell the other waiter that we wanted more cheese. I said No, we asked for more salsa since we have not gotten our food yet, the kids wanted more to go with their cheese dip. I said maybe you heard him say tea. (Earlier, she filled my granddaughter's tea glass and no one else's) This woman had the nerve to show her attitude when she (for the 2nd time) filled my granddaughter's tea glass and told her, "YOU are very nice". I know an insult when it hits me in the face and this was definitely meant to be an insult. I finally received more tea when I had finished eating! When we left, this woman received a very small tip. And then to show us just how crude she is, she yelled out of the door at us when we in the parking lot. (surely she knew that the small tip was due to her poor service). We love El Cerro's food and next time, we will request Domingo as our server since he is always on the ball. read more
