This place is a Salinas institution known for some really great food. My family has eaten a variety of flavorful burritos here throughout the years. It's our go to spot for breakfast burritos. The mister loves to get chile verde whenever we visit. The homemade tortillas are so good, which they also make into great packaged chips. Lines are common, but online ordering makes things much more efficient to just pick up. You can also order there & receive helpful service. Go down the counter line to see options to select from behind the glass & then enter the line to pay. Spice level can be customized with the salsa you choose. The shop is clean & bright. Large screens show the menu. They also have refrigerated beverages, fountain drinks, a variety of chips, & packaged sweets available to round out your meal. Parking is located around the back & side of the building, & can get pretty full. The only place to eat while there is at 2 outdoor picnic tables in a gated area on the side of the building with no overhead cover.

Amazing burritos at an affordable price. If you saw my review from 2014, the burritos used to be about $3. Currently, burritos range from about $7 to $10, still very affordable for all homemade ingredients including the tortilla. You can watch the worker press each tortilla as you order. You can also buy fresh homemade tortillas to go, 4 in each pack! Burritos can be on the smaller side, so order 2 or 8. You can get other sides they sell in the store, like a mini mini-mart. Highly recommend the chili verde burrito and the carne asada burrito, although I've enjoyed every burrito I've tried at El Charrito. They forgot the hot sauce on my carne asada burrito last visit, but the burrito was still tasty. Order ahead if you don't want to wait and it'll be ready for pick-up!

El Charrito is a must-visit spot in Salinas for authentic Mexican food! This place is clearly a local favorite--the line often wraps around the corner of the building, but it moves quickly thanks to their fast and friendly service. We tried the breakfast burrito, al pastor burrito, and taquitos--all were fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. You order at the counter, and they put everything together for you right there. Super efficient. They also offer mobile/online ordering with easy pickup, which is great if you're in a hurry. There's a fairly large parking lot, but it tends to fill up fast, especially during peak hours. Street parking is usually available nearby. There's a small outdoor patio with two long tables, but many people enjoy their food in their cars--it's that kind of casual, no-frills vibe. Highly recommend if you're craving Mexican food done right.

On our way to Southern Cal we had to make a detour off I5 so that I could load up on the best chili verde burritos. Decided to venture outside of the norm and asked for added carnitas to be added to my Chile Verde and topped it off with pico de gallo. It was lick the wrapping paper clean good! The lady making my burrito was clearly not impressed, both the Hubbs and I thought it was delicious! It was my lucky day because the line was short and I scored a fresh hot package of tortillas to go! We could've easily eaten two but instead took one each to go because we were off to another favorite, Winchell's Donuts for dessert! If you're in the area, you have to stop by and get the chili for the burrito. There's also another restaurant location in Monterey.

The wife found this place as we were passing through Salinas. It's an easy stop if you are headed toward Santa Cruz (on 183). Parking was straight forward with spaces in the back. Inside was nice and everything was pretty straight forward. There is a large chip selection and large screen menus with pricing where you wait in line. You order at the glass serving counter, which is nice because you can see everything, but I didnt notice any clear labels next to the options. There are multiple people behind the counter helping who's ever ready. It's an order first and pay at the counter as you go. The meat options are plentiful. I will say based on today's standard these burritos are "small" and not overstuffed. But that's okay, and you know why, because of those $&@-!?#% flour tortillas.... they're absolutely top tier. Carnitas Burrito - 4 STAR - the tortilla is soft, stretchy, and has a perfect texture with a clean subtle flavor. This came with rice and beans which melded into the meet and nothing jumped out flavor wise and I opted for hot salsa. The meat was slightly under seasoned for me, but tender and shredded nicely in each bite. Chile Colorado (beef) - 4 STAR - cubed beef cooked in a mild red sauce. We did the rice, bean, hot sauce, and this time we added cheese. The meat again shredded perfectly for each bite. That perfect tortilla held the liquid in and soaked up the rest so it was a nice pop of flavor over and over. Again slightly under seasoned for me. Chile Verde (pork) - 3 STAR - tender cubed pork inside a tomatillo based liquid. We did the rice, beans, and hot sauce. Once more the tortilla shines and held everything together so well. The liquid had the upfront citrus punch you'd expect. Meat pulled away nicely in each bite, but this one to me needed an additional layer of seasoning. I will note my wife disagreed on the lack of seasoning on the meat. But between us and the kids it was unanimous, the tortillas were 5 STAR!

El Charrito isn't your typical taqueria. But trust me when they say they won't disappoint. We ordered carne asada burritos (next time I gotta get the chile verde) and four taquitos. The taquitos are more like small fried tacos, which they heat up as ordered so they'll be nice and crispy. They topped them with crema and pico de gallo for us, and will top with whatever else you'd like. The burritos are on the smaller side (prices reflect this too at around only $5/ea) but they're the perfect size for someone like me. My husband ate two. What really made the burrito for me was the tortilla. They make their tortillas fresh in house and my gosh, they're so delicious. My grandparents used to come here regularly just to try to buy a dozen tortillas to have on hand. You can also order meats by the pound, and items a-la-carte. The place is busy, but don't let the lines fool you. They have so many people working behind the counter that it goes by fast. Overall, I'd highly recommend stopping in if you're looking for a good burrito. They don't disappoint!

First off, customer service sucks. After we place the order, they asked us what we wanted in the burrito after we had already told him what we wanted and burrito. So we also ordered a fountain drink. They were flat and then you can taste the carbonation. We went straight to the car. Right after we opened our food it was cold. The tortilla tasted disgusting nothing in the burrito have flavor. I wouldn't even buy this food for the homeless. After eating the food regardless because we paid for it, I had a funny aftertaste. Never again. The only reason we tried it was because everybody says it's so good and we what shopping out of town so we stopped there. Horchata and salsa were the only good things there read more

I was so happy with the 16 breakfast burritos I ordered for an end of the year class party this week. I ordered ahead online and they were all ready and prepaid, so I was set to just grab them and go. I don't think I've had handmade tortillas on a burrito before (usually just on tacos). Makes a huge difference. I tried the nopales and chorizo and potato - both sooo yummy. And $3.19 for a breakfast burrito?! Can't wait to go back. read more

5 stars for a mini market food counter. Unprecedented for this Yelper, but this place is that good. You walk in and see a queue snaking around the store for the deli counter. In all fairness, it is more a take out restaurant than a store. The only grocery items they sell are drinks, chips and twinkie type stuff. The line moves very quickly and all the ladies are nice. Our faves were the chile relleno burrito with beans, chile verde and the crispy tacos. It was so good, we leaned up against the trunk of our car and ate in the parking lot. They sold out of packages of flour tortillas by noon. Definitely worth visit if you are in Salinas. read more

Great food, the price is right. They have a smartphone app that allows you to place an order and pay with a credit card. My only concern is that the app is made by a company that I'm not familiar with ... considering all the cyber security breaches nowadays, I prefer not to register my credit card info on the app simply because I don't know how secure my personal info would be. I asked the owner why the app would not give me the option to place my order and pay when I pick up my order. She said that the app only allows you to place an order if you pay ahead with a credit card. However, she said I could call, place my order over the phone, and pay when I pick up my order. That seemed to be a good work around in lieu of using the app to place my order! read more

The website, and restaurant are not in sync. Ordered T-giving take out, and website said it could be picked up at 10am. Got to restaurant at 10 am. but restaurant not ready for customers yet. I'm sure the meal will be great, the timing stinks! read more

Great for a quick road trip stop. Close to the freeway, fast service, fresh, and you can customize your food pretty easily. My only complaint is that they should have a few tables. The place is big enough but instead they have a big empty space. It why had that they'd be perfect but it's also kinda funny to see people "lean eating" to avoid getting carnitas juices on their clothes. read more

Food is ok over priced for the small portions. When you ask for extra salsa they over charge you for it yet you still don't get the extra salsa you asked for. This place is ok for a quick bite but i rather just drive to plaza bakery for a burrito. read more

I drive an hour to stop here every two weeks, to pick up the best tortillas around and treat myself to their delicious fresh Mexican food. The taquitos are the best and the burritos are just like my grandma made when I was a child. I love this place and the good people who work there. This is not a sit down restaurant, so be prepared to find a place to relax and enjoy your food. read more

Every time I go here, I am met with dirty looks from staff for no apparent reason. I got uncomfortable ordering face to face so I decided to order online, which is supposed to be faster than ordering online. I'm am currently sitting outside the restaurant extremely cold from the weather after being told to wait outside when their website said my order was ready. Apparently it wasn't ready, and I have been waiting outside for 20 mins watching people come in and out from both inside and online ordering. I am told to wait once again. Yes! Yes! Yes! This is the Mexican taqueria I've been searching for! I love home made flour tortillas and Mexican cheese. Every other Mexican restaurant I've gone to does not do home made flour tortillas or corn and I always ask for Mexican cheese, but most tell me they don't carry that. This place carries both! I also got a agua Fresca de horchata for FREE for checking in on Yelp. La agua taste perfect. Don't let the security frames on the windows scare you. This place is very clean, very modern, food taste 5 star plus and they have an phone app! I got two burritos 1- chile verde 2-CHICHARRON. I remember when my Mom&Dad would bring me and my brothers here everytime we were in Salinas, since we live in Seaside about 20 min from here it's not very far, they still to this day which is 10+ Years later, have the BEST burrito in the County. Still the same exact taste I remember as a kid. Now I come here every single time I'm in Salinas, I just wish they were open until 9:00-10:00Pm because they close way to early. read more

Every time I have an appointment in Salinas... Yes... I plan for lunch at El Charrito. The Fresh, handmade flour tortillas are the #1 reason, but the meat options and efficient process is also amazing. I always loved this place until one time I got bad service ... the girl who made my burrito was not wearing gloves, this is so unsanitary right after she did mine she made my boyfriends with no gloves as well I was very disappointed because now I will never go back again read more

This is my favorite place to get a quick lunch while in Salinas. There's usually a pretty heavy line during the lunch rush, but it's definitely worth it. Their burritos- their tortillas specifically- are unbeatable. Most employees are kind and happy to have conversation if you initiate it. Prices are fair and the food is always fresh. Food is good, but portions are getting smaller. Prices went up, and the portions went down. Something I really didn't like was when I was waiting for my food they were sweeping. It's not good to have dust while eating. Specially when is food around. I hate when someone does this. This is my point of view though. read more

I love getting my food exactly how I want it. If you are tired of the standard "this is how WE do it" burritos, check this place out. The homemade flour tortillas are bomb!! You can choose all of your ingredients and skip the ones you don't like. I don't like rice (cheap fill) in my burrito, so I can get it without here. I like the Asada and Carnitas the best. Specialties

Like many immigrants who came to this country in hopes of opportunity and a better life, the Moncada's migrated to this country from Mexico in the early 60's with the same mentality and in pursuit of the of the American dream. Similar to many immigrants, our family had to work hard in order save money to be able to open a small business. The Moncada's had experience owning a small grocery store in Mexico, and at the time businesses were not catering to the Mexican community. So naturally, in 1981, they opened a small grocery store with a small deli counter that sold Teresa's (the matriarch of the family) recipes. After opening multiple grocery stores in the 1980's and 1990's, our family decided to shift their focus to what they do best which is selling easy to-go style food while using old Mexican cooking techniques.

Where is the 'Sixth Star' option? You don't have one Yelp? Well have a burrito from this place and then consider adding one. Looks like your every day market where you can buy all the useful products you need and then you realize you're hungry so you decide to have a quick burrito. Why not have one here right? You notice that the line for the food seems to move rather quickly and you have a couple minutes to spare for some home cooked goodness. Besides it's hard to ignore such an enticing aroma. You get to the front of the line still wondering what to order. Close your eyes and simply stick your index finger out at any point on the menu, I guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy whatever item you blindly picked. Everything on the menu uses fresh ingredients, starting with the tortillas which are made in the market and have no preservatives at all. [Side Note]: You can buy a pack of these delicious tortillas for $2.50 and they are still warm in the pack! Carne Asada, Carnitas, Chile Verde are always hot and fresh, but it doesn't even stop there. They have some of the best tamales I've had outside of my grandmother's of course. Superb enchiladas and chile relleno, it's all fabulous. So I reiterate, you WILL enjoy any and every item on their menu. They take credit cards now (didn't used to). I love the food here. Everything I have tried has been delicious, and anything served on one of their fresh flour tortillas is just that much better. The huevos con chile is my favorite breakfast. Chile Colorado is one of my favorite lunch choices. For either meal, though, anything you try should be good. I probably have a Charrito burrito once a week and never get tired of them. Also very inexpensive, which is a bonus! You would pay more for a burrito from a fast food "Mexican" restaurant that would be nowhere near as good. Downside: there's nowhere to sit. But it's absolutely worth it for the food (family recipes!). Take your burrito (or enchiladas, taquitos (yum) or other goodies) to go. Since they also have a small market, you can grab beer or soft drinks to go home with your food. read more

I have lived in Salinas for my entire 24 years, and I only recently tried El Charrito, per recommendation from, well, everyone. Let me tell you, I was missing out. When I walked in, the line was nearly out the door for the masa, but a pleasant woman directed my brother and myself to the burrito line. I placed my order for two chicken fajita burritos, purchased them, and took them to work to eat on my lunch. If only I had known what I would be grubbing on, I would've anticipated my break much more. Hells bells. I tried to stop after the first one, but that just wasn't happening. Yesterday I visited El Charrito for the second time this month and I absolutely love their food! By far, I have tried an asada burrito and a carnitas burrito and they are delicious! There is a variety of salsas and extras to choose from that you can add to your order, and your order is made in front of you. All of the food options that are available look fresh and authentic. They also sell aguas frescas, which are also delicious and refreshing with fruit pieces added for freshness. This place has the worst employees/staff ever!! They are so rude. The worst customer service. From the security outside to the people serving the food. No respect to customers. Its like they hate working there or the current boss? The attitude they carry, just Negative!! No patience towards customers. Super convenient place for a breakfast or lunch burrito. The size is fairly reasonable for the cost of fresh,fast authentic Mexican food. My all time favorites include the Costilla and Chile Relleno. A few months ago with the remodeling brought an app, super easy app that allows you to place then pick up your food without having to wait in long lines. Very convenient!!! on finger I'm impatient when it comes to food. I'll eat a partially still-frozen pizza rather than wait for it to cook all the way. I'm fine with omitting ingredients called for by a recipe. And, sure, I've spotted hairs in takeaway food and--thinking 'screw it, what's the harm?'--just eaten around them. After all, that can't be worse than eating food that's fallen on the floor, which I also, in my infinite grossness, have been known to do. They hardly put any beans, meat, or rice in the food. 3.20$ for a burrito is cheap but you have to eat 3 to get full. Excellent food! Stopped by again and never disappointed. You can really taste the quality in all the ingredients and the they have the best tortillas, maybe ever? I can eat El Charrito for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I see a lot of complaints about the burritos size, they only cost $3.19 each! Two burritos are still less than most "super burritos" which are full of rice and beans and 3 are still less than $10! Great price considering the quality and fresh made tortillas. Their food is really good especially their burritos. Down side is that when they are busy (which is majority of the time) their burritos are done like quesadillas : not rolled like an actual burrito but folded in half. Agua de horchata is really good.
